If War Thunder's F-89 Scorpion was historically accurate

- Conceptualized in the 1940s and created / used during the 1950s, the F-89 Scorpion was a US all-weather jet interceptor. The Scorpion, designed by Northrop Grumman, first flew in 1948. Early versions experienced considerable issues. Most notably, they had severe issues with aerodynamics and engine performance. Eventually these issues were ironed out with later variants like the F-89D. The F-89D was armed entirely with air to air rockets, and would eventually be used to test guided air to air missiles. As newer jet interceptors became available, F-89s were transferred to air national guard units where they were used in service until 1969.

@@humzaakhtar9208 because
@@humzaakhtar9208 the reason they were designing it was because the earlier unguided rocket systems proved to be highly inaccurate. At the time guided rockets were extremely primitive, and the need to attack from beyond defense gun range was a necessity.
The blast radius of the warhead, actually, was roughly 300m. In fact, I would say that given the limitations, and the stakes of not intercepting a nuclear bomber formation, it was actually a fairly reasonable solution.

@@F4Wildcat lol
Well, they still flew. And shot down lotsa stuff, as they were intended to do, engine issues notwithstanding. Only started to get shat upon once they got converted to fighter-bombers and the brits/americans got round to building better engines for their piston fighters. Much like the german heavy tanks which were hard to stop if used adequately, most of the issues didnt matter as much once the things actually hit the field. I mean, you can point out all the issues of the tigers but you still wouldnt want to be on the receiving end once they were in the field cause they could mulch most allied equivalents, design issues notwithstanding. To clarify, im not saying that german engineering in WW2 was perfect or superior but it sure did its job when it counted the most, german defeat was down to strategic decisions/circumstance/disadvantages moreso than technological inferiority.

Jeezus the wing wobble looks scrote-twistingly painful even in WT.
Fantastic as always
i love the new wing shaking, bending and flexing they added. definitely one of the better decisions of gaijin
0:40 Hey Spookston, is this for when they were testing the rockets?
Like were there actual enemy F6Fs? Or was it testing.
Alos why would the rockets behave weirdly against only this kind of airplane?
I believe it happened because a hellcat went rogue and a few F-89s were sent to intercept the pilotless plane only for the rockets to not hit their target
build22 they were made into drones to test weapons on.
So this F6F target drone went rouge and was not responding to controls from the ground so they sent out 2 F-89D’s which fired all their rockets but missed all of them
War Thunder actually made a video about this, but i can't remember what episode it was for the shooting range.
As others said, the F6F was being used as an unmanned target drone but it stopped responding to control inputs from the ground. Two F-89s got scrambled to intercept it, but their automatic fire control systems stopped working. The sights the planes once had for manual aiming had been removed because they were only meant to be fired with the help of the fire control system. So, with no real way to aim the missiles other than guesstimation, and with about 30-40/100 rockets being fired per salvo, each Scorpion only had three unguided and unaimed shots at the F6F. All the rockets missed, set off a few bushfires and caused some property damage, but thankfully there were no injuries or casualties.
Love the vid, been watching other ones. I hope you can make one on the F86
If looks alone made the plane the F89 would be a super bad ass. The truth is the scorpion was a pathfinder vehicle into the jet age, more of “what not to do” was learned than anything else.
the music fits perfectly for this aircraft :)
F3-H Demon next. That thing was prone to compressor stalls and was known as a pilot killer.
They were not in service but they were tested with the F-89D, both the F-89D and the XM439 were prototypes, the F-89D was designed with rockets with proximity fuse in mind
Only 1 fixed wing aircraft was ever cleared to use the VT fuse rockets and that was the Bronco. The F-89s only ever had impact HE
@@southernbear736 False, an F-89D was tested with XM439 proximity fuse rockets at China Lake in 1956, USA already had proximity fuse projectiles in service in 1942
@@Maverick966 That's false, the mods claimed that and then never provided any evidence. M439 is an Army project from the 1970s. Also, M439 is not proximity, it's time fuzed. M429 is proximity, is also an Army exclusive, and blows up if you fire more than one at a time.

isnt this the plane with the air to air nuclear missiles
yes it is
I never knew it was called the Scorpion, I see why though, it looks like one! I love the looks of the F-89
This is like the forgotten weapons of vehicles.
F-89D used their radar scope as a gunsight. That's why the meme of battle of palmdale happened.
Annnd F-89D with GAR-1 was different variant, F-89J.
2:10 remember when a half damaged plane could be left damaged and taken into the next game with the damage? that was some early shit.
If the Scorpion was "historically accurate" it wouldn't be engaging in maneuvering combat.
Ooooh planes
I like flying the plane in game since I live in Idaho and just a little ways away from where I live, nampa has Idaho air national guard F89D's on display in a local park.
Would like to see a video covering heli ec and its problems
You forgot that the f-89 should be able to damage any bases near or within heavily forested land when engaging F6F's due to wildfires. The bases would eventually burn out
The only reason I like the F89B is because it's the closest gaijin has to an A-10 fire-rate-wise
0:45 lmao
no, the F-89D did not get missiles of any kind, had you actually read the manual you cited, you would know this
to find the actual armament of the F-89D, refer to section 4, page 45 of the F-89D operations manual (4-45)
edit: your own book that YOU REFERENCED even mentioned that a single 89D was used as a test bed, and only the 89H onwards had missiles
If you had read the book I cited, you would know that F-89Ds were used to test the armament concept for the F-89H, meaning that the F-89H could be a researchable modification for the F-89D, considering it was nearly identical to the F-89D.
@@Spookston 89H was new production and had a new fire control system. your source says that its only provisions added for it on the 89D, they wernt installed
89J would be more valid here, all 89Js where modified Ds however again FCS changed.
Ds did not carry GAR-1s operationally, they shouldnt in game
Yes, new fire control system and different weapons. That means otherwise identical. It's just being pedantic. This type of point (where a modification changes one vehicle to a different variant) is not new to my videos.
@@Spookston outside of the airframe they aren't identical, also then don't say the 89D can fire GAR-1s, say the 89D can be set as an 89H/J. the 89D cannot use them
also no it isn't being pedantic, there's a reason these aircraft have different designations, stuff changes between them namely in this case the fire control equipment, the 89H introduced the E-9 fire control system, whos primary change being that it has the subsystems necessary to utilize guided missiles, the 89Ds E-6 system does not and so it cannot fire them. this is ignoring all the various related switches that the 89D is missing to use them.
@@Spookston seconding @Yukari
additionally, by your own logic, the F-89D is redundant and can just be a modification of the F-89B, since if we oversimplify it as you have, they are essentially the same, just with different armament, and for that matter, many other aircraft, tanks, ships, and helicopters in this game can be removed and their previous variants have modifications added to them
as i mentioned in another thread, its not as simple as just putting the new armament onto the aircraft, a lot more goes into it than that, especially with guided missiles, coupling this fact with aim-4s not being usable with F-89D's computers, making your whole pedantics argument complete nonsense
Nice always great to have your main propulsion unit just die midflight...
You should do a video : " If any US Vehicle in warthunder was historically accurate "
