ALS fasciculations (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)(Motor neuron disease)

- ALS-AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS IS A NEURODEGERERATIVE DISEASE THE PRIMARILY AFFECTS THE MOTOR NEURON CELL POPULATION IN THE MOTOR CORTEX,BRAIN STEM AND SPINAL CORD.IT IS A PROGRESSIVE DISEASE AND MOST PATIENTS SUCCUMB TO RESPIRATORY FAILURE.
STEPHEN HAWKING had this rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, "ALS", or Lou Gehrig's disease) that gradually paralysed him over the decades] Even after the loss of his speech, he was still able to communicate through a speech-generating device, initially through use of a hand-held switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. He died on 14 March 2018 at the age of 76.
Fasciculation represents a brief spontaneous contraction that affects a small number of muscle fibres, causing a flicker of movement under the skin. While an understanding of the role of fasciculation in ALS remains incomplete, fasciculations derive from ectopic activity generated in the motor system. A proximal origin seems likely to contribute to the generation of fasciculation in the early stages of ALS, while distal sites of origin become more prominent later in the disease, associated with distal motor axonal sprouting as part of the reinnervation response that develops secondary to loss of motor neurons. Fasciculations are distinct from the recurrent trains of axonal firing described in neuromyotonia. Fasciculation without weakness, muscle atrophy or increased tendon reflexes suggests a benign fasciculation syndrome, even when of sudden onset. Regardless of origin, fasciculations often present as the initial abnormality in ALS, an early harbinger of dysfunction and aberrant firing of motor neurons.
Presence of fasciculation or twitching alone does not mean that it is ALS.
Fasciculations can develop even when stressed or anxious..
It could be even due to Benign fasciculation syndrome if it is persisting..
Please consult with a doctor if you are anxious about a symptom and rather not google it up…
Most of the causes of twitches are benign and non-worrisome…
ALS is a very rare diagnosis and is made only when there is a cluster of specific symptoms and findings and is made after exclusion of many other common diagnosis..
If you only have twiching dont worry. Many people have, can be stress anxiety related, vitamin B, calcium, magnesium deficiency... If you dont have weakness in ur muscle you should not think to much. ALS is very rare for people under 50 except if you have in your family. And twitching is not the most common first sign for ALS. Dont stress
✨
Reading these comments made me feel a lot better about my health anxiety . If you all are so afraid of having ALS maybe donate towards finding a cure?
It's a journey and a test of mental strength from that first twitch to a confirmed diagnosis of ALS or No ALS. One discovers true grit, resilience and joy or eventual acceptance.

I’ve been dealing with this since the end of 2014, I’ve had a regular EMG done not a deep muscle EMG with the needles being inserted deep into your muscles. Neurologist said there was no signs of ALS (which was my biggest fear). I have always dealt with low iron and potassium deficiency sometimes my magnesium can be off but not significantly. I am now 26 y/o and these twitches I get in my calve muscles have been ongoing since 2014. There’s occasionally but very rarely where they seem to be getting better but then always comes back stronger than ever and more annoying than ever. I try not to stress about it but I feel them non stop when I am at rest, I also feel them randomly throughout my body sometimes but 90% of the time it’s everyday in my calves. Keeping my stress level low is the only thing I can kind of say helps but in reality they never leave at least while I’m stationary. Any ideas or anyone else have this problem. Ty for your time!
Also had an MRI done on my brain, all clear there.
No weakness, regular fatigue from working on my feet 8-9 a day. I walk anywhere from 30-60miles a week.
It is most likely to be Benign fasciculation syndrome
Hey! I hope you are well. I was just wondering whether you have learned anything more about your symptoms? I have the same symptoms (and then some) and am also extremely concerned.
Why do you say that fasciculations are often the initial symptom of ALS when most neurologists claim otherwise? That is, that fasciculations are rarely a symptom of the onset of the disease and that they almost always come after symptoms such as muscle weakness and atrophy? in cases where fasciculations arrive first, can you tell me how soon after the symptoms listed above arrive? A thousand thanks
So scary. Als can come on differently for everybody. I’m 29 and started having symptoms 5 months ago after a hospital stay. Mine were a headache that lasted weeks, tingling/vibrating legs, stiffness at the back of my tongue. Now I have body wide muscle twitching, slight slurred speech and muscle atrophy in multiple places on my body. I’m waiting for testing, it is a horrifying nightmare I wouldn’t wish on anybody 😞
Hi Ruby. How is it going?
How is it going? I was in a similar situation a year ago. It all started with severe headaches. The headaches got better but now I get body wide twitching
Ruby Coley did you happen to have an MRI with contrast?
israel has a drug that apparently can treat it if so, ill try to find the name and place it here
Any updates, Ruby? I hope you are okay.
I'm getting tested for this on Wednesday.
Good luck my friend, I hope you don’t have it to the nth degree.
How did everything goM

Do you have muscle weakness or is it just the twitching

Are twitches consistent? I get small twitches/spasms randomly that come and go sometimes in the bicep area & sometimes in my legs but they not last for seconds (that I noticed) mainly when I’m at rest I don’t notice them when I’m actively doing things
Any changes?
I've got the same thing, do you got any news ? Was it a disease or something like that ? Thanks, that would help me, I'm going to see the doc soon.
Same here.. how are you now)
I have had the same thing but mine was focused on the legs region I got both my emg NCV done and it didn't turned out to be anything just stress anxiety if u have twitching just twtiching with no sign of muscle wasting or atrophy weakness please don't consider als it might be deficeny of b12 vitamin d the twitching with als comes after the weakness and wasting like a limb would stop working properly u would have difficulty in holding your favourite cup gripping pens u would be tripping and falling most of the time if u are having twitches while at rest they mostly mean nothing because they might be due to stress and anxiety but I would advise that u see a neurologist and get an EMG and ncv done for me excercising and meditating helped alot

Very helpful . Thank you
I'm 42 yo female and in 2007 my father passed away of ALS at the age of 58. My muscles twitch ALL the time!! On my arm, my thighs, right now i have a funky twitch under my right foot, my eyelid, sigh..... It's always in the back of my mind that I may one day have ALS or some sort of muscle degenerative disease 😓
muscle twitches are common in young people. primarily you should stress less, increase physical activity, lower coffee and alcohol intake, stay off energy drinks and get more sleep
Texas Tea I twitch everyday all over for almost 2 years now it all started after I had some anxiety attacks so don’t always just assume it’s als stress and anxiety can cause it as well but since it is in ur blood line u should go and be checked to be safe
Texas Tea generalized fasciculations are usually caused by stress/anxiety
Try to get Edmark i have it but when i start using it i feel good now
Texas Tea Did you check yourself?
I have benign cramp
Faciculation syndrome.
I have twitches in calf’s and thight but fire
Randomly all over body. They come and go sometimes
Constant sometimes not. 1 year in no weakness. Als is not twitching alone ! Twitches are harmless and if als would appear after weakness and atrophy as a response to dying motor neurons . If u twitch and can still walk talk grip then carry on with you life
And crack on life is to short
I hope the patient will get better.. thank you for sharing the video with us

I have had twitching muscles in my legs and feet for 6 weeks now non stop. I don't know what to do. It feels like my legs have worms moving around under the skin and it is preventing sleep etc. My doctor doesn't seem to be listening to me, and it's only getting worse 😔
I don't know how much longer I can keep going like this. I'm so exhausted and lost from it.
I had it for a month straight and changed my sleeping position (from laying on my back to side) and it's weirdly enough helped alot , worth a shot
What what’s it, Bec?
How are you now please reply
Big difference with “twitching” and these. These almost look like waves or like a huge worm is inside squiggling around.
I have had fasciculations but they stop when I move. About 2 months later it turns out I have rheumatoid arthritis and that's what is causing my thumb to be weak. ALS is very scary, I was so worried before I knew what was going on.
Hi, im having these fasciculations in all my body too. They also tend to stop when I move and are very quick. What test did they do to you to diagnose you and discard ALS? Also how old are you because Im 17 and it would d be very weird that I have ant of this conditions.

Martín you’re way too young, you don’t have ALS or any of these other diseases.
Muscle fasciculations relieved by movement = restless leg syndrome
RLS can travel to other body parts
Hi april does rheumatoid arthritis twich all over the body?
I heard that skipping milk nd dairy helps reverse the condition.
Nice to see pathology, but better is to prevent and/or cure it.....
You should expect(in case of ALS) weakness in that part of body which have twiching or it isn't any corelation?

i have some fasciculations sometimes a day very small for about 1 weak now and my hands is a bit shaky sometimes when i move them . anyone had the same problem as me ?
Did u ever find out what was going on
Would and EMG/NCS detect ALS after having fasics for 6+ months? Would there be sure signs of denervation or neuron damage by this point. Thanks.
Surely..EMG would help.
Pretty sure nothing is wrong with me considering I’m young and live a healthy lifestyle but I twitch in various places for a few seconds multiple times a day and I’m a hypochondriac so it scares me a bit lmao
That’s the Benign fascications. A person with ALS they’re twitching never stops and it keeps going until the muscle is weak. I have Benign Fasiculation as mine does for a second and then stops.
I had even worse condition with twitches but it got drastically reduced when I cut down on caffeine intake
Do you workout? I recently had a shoulder injury working out and now I’m getting some twitches on that same arm, also a hypochondriac so it scares me as well lol

I've been getting muscle twitches everyday for 4 months now it started off with just my foot moving without me doing it and now has become an everyday thing throughout my whole body is this normal could it be magnesium deficiency and whats happening inside ur skin when muslce twitches happen?
Same thing happened with me everyday muscles twitching and my megnacium level is normal
What is your diagnosis?
I had it for about a month straight , finally I swapped from sleeping on my back to my side and it's lowered the non stop twitching by a good amount. Worth a shot maybe it's a sleeping position thing
How are u guys now? Did it ever go away?
how are you doing now Is It just BFS?
Are ALS fasciculations persistent and highly focalized? I mean, once they start in a group of muscles will they remain or will they come and go? Will they randomly from one place to other?
How are you now
I have been getting these twitches in my legs for a cpl years now. Tried to ignore it because my mum had als but I'm now booked into see a neurologist. I've also got pernicious anaemia and an mthfr bad allele so I'm really hoping it's something to do with that.
Hope it all went well
I have this symptom and muscle weakness. But also accompanied with uncommon symptoms of ALS, such as sensation problems, numbness, muscle pain and burning, and it also affects my eyes. Could these uncommon symptoms also be part of a diagnosis of ALS?
Your symptoms sound much like mine. That doesn’t sound like ALS, but it might sound like MS or MG. Go get an MRI of your brain and cervical spine done.
This is exactly me. How are you guys doing?
Sensory symptoms are unlikely in ALS.
Right above my kneecap on my right leg started twitching, and now it’s gone to all parts of my body. I took a break from working out to see if that’s why and it’s still there. Mostly leg but sometimes shoulders and arms. Should I be worried. I don’t feel weak and can balance very well. This has been going on for 3 weeks
How are they now after the time have past?
Hi man just reaching out to see what the outcome of this was as it sounds similar to me
My body twitches A LOT all over at night, but far less so during the day. I have some sense of weakness but after one year of symptoms I am stronger than ever at the gym and also weigh more than ever. At 178 cm I weigh 103 kg and can bench press 150 kg. Does this rule out ALS despite me having a weird sensation of my throat collapsing and constant twitches at night in different muscles at the same time? (Even inside my ear)
I want help on how to get rid of it?😣
I’m 15 and have twitches not likes that they go away and then move to a different part and bug me and go away Wtf is going on
Ebby Rosemarie We are both the same. But mines are major in my foot
your not alone my friend.
Not ALS. 15 yr olds almost never get it. You have a higher chance of winning the lottery twice in one week

I’ve had calf twitches for a month now and seemingly came out of nowhere. It feels like worms are crawling in my feet too. It’s 24/7
Seeing a neorologist next Monday and I’m scared as hell. Did a blood test and my creatine kinase was 427. Doctor said it’s from exercise or drinking can make it spike. He barely looked at my calves and acted like I was crazy. My knee feels tight and my ankle too. This is the worst. Yes I got on google and did a self diagnostic. Horrible idea!!! Stress is to the moon
When I flex my calves it goes away. Every once and awhile the muscle to the side of the upper knee fires off like a machine gun for 5 seconds or so and goes away. I drinks tons of water and did all the blood work already. B12, potassium, c reactive protein. All good. But not good because it cancels out the easy explanations. Even tested for Lyme and that’s negative. Again good but not good. I’ll find out next Monday and it’s gonna be harrowing
You ever find out what it was?

My body has been twitching for the past week. I can't sleep because of it. I am terrified. I am 20 years old. I don't want to be diagnosed with ALS. ☹️
Short duration illnesses are unlikely due to a degenerative disease like ALS..Even fatigue or electrolyte imbalance can lead to muscle twitching..So, better not get worried unnecessarily….

I currently have tingling in feet and fingers which started first then then extreme fatigue. Next came constant muscle twitching starting in the legs and the arms, now it's in the torso, slightly in the neck. My little finger on the right hand has started to atrophy and I can't move my hand as fast as I can on the left. Needless to say I'm terrified at the moment. I have not been to a neurologist due to covid. Other conditions are not as high priority. This has been going on for over a month and has affected my quality of life immensely.
Could this be ALS?
Tingling is not a symptom of ALS, never ever. Tingling is a response from sensory neurons, and als ONLY targets motor neurons. If you have tingling it's not ALS. So it's probably not ALS. And are you really sure you have muscle atrophy? It's normal that one hand is slightly bigger than the other, we're dominant people. But yeah, tingling is not a sign of ALS. google it if you don't believe me
Sensory symptoms are not a feature of ALS..also, such fast progression over a month..

I’m exhausted cus I’m tryna sleep and all night I feel it twitching . I have been a bit stressed lately so I’m hoping that’s all it is. And with this happening now I’m def more stressed
Can I send you my ncv/emg report??
