  • The onset of ALS can begin unassumingly, with a weakening in one hand, one leg or in the tongue. The disease kills the nerve cells that control the muscles. The body becomes increasingly paralyzed, leading eventually to death. To find its cause, Peter Andersen and his research team at Umeå university are now looking deep inside our cells, with the hope of being able to find a gene therapy that will be able to stop this deadly illness. In focus is the SOD1 gene and the results from the team’s mapping of ALS families in the north of Sweden.

    Thank you for what you are doing! My family suffers from heredity ALS. WE have traced it back to the mid 1800's as well. My Grandfather, uncle , brother, and mother all died from this horrible disease. Many cousins have passed as well! Thank you thank you for your work! It is salve to my soul!

    Appreciate your research and more importantly the sharing of this knowledge. My mother passed due to this tragic illness and I have done so much following up throughout the course of my life trying to get updates on cure and potential treatment options. You have helped shed some light on an otherwise under-researched and highly over shadowed disease by much more pronounced and commonly seen cases such as cancer. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Multitude of gratitude for your work and time.

    I lost my brother 20 years ago and a first cousin 3 years ago to this dreadful disease, FALS, familial als. We all need to give as much money as we can toward research and lobby our collective governments to get on board as well. Thank you for all your hard work!!

    Indeed Als is worst disease we need urgent cure but pls even don't forget ppl suffering worst pain like trigeminal neuralgia it has some surgery n different antidepressants to lower it but it's temp most of time so we need permanent cure for trigeminal neuralgia and even pls don't forget 50 million only in USA suffering with worst cursed sound call ringing ear they too need urgent cure n other ppl who got paralysed, all this other disease are still small infrony of Als but they r making life hell n many chooses death as escape, so please cure for all its important, instead of wstting trillions on weapons n nasa space exploration use that all resources to find cure

    Our family is currently dealing with familial ALS. When my son's dad passed from ALS over 20 yrs ago, we chalked it up to his military service. Veterans are twice as likely to develop ALS. My son, at age 59, has just been diagnosed with ALS. Genetic testing shows he has one of the mutated genes. Unfortunately, it is not the SOD1 gene, and it appears there is no treatment in the pipeline to slow down or stop the progression. His siblings are in the process of genetic testing. His sister's test results show she has the same gene but no symptoms at this time.
    Given that they found a way to treat the SOD1 gene, they need to work on the other genes that are associated with ALS. Our family has four children and three grandchild who may carry this gene along with his fathers siblings and their children. We need to determine who carries the gene and hopefully they will decide not to pass it by having children.
    In the meantime, we hope that research will find a way to treat this mutated gene.

      Most likely, as there are many different gene mutations that cause ALS sadly...

    • @justxzee
      @justxzee Рік тому +1

      There is one treatment available for those caused by SOD1 mutation I believe. It’s called Torfesen.
      There are only seven treatments available currently, two are to slow down the progress of ALS. One is for the SOD1 gene (I believe). And the rest are to ease symptoms and issues among ALS patients.

      There’s currently 7 treatments, a few are to ease symptoms like uncontrollable laughter and tears. Others are used to ease swallowing issues or when swallowing becomes a problem. And 2 of the 7 are to slow the progression of ALS and extend life by 6-12 months more.

      90% of patients with ALS are sporadic meaning it’s randomly happens. 10% are genetic from families.
