This is just what I needed!! Not only did I suffer a horrible muscle cramp yesterday (and couldn't walk without limping) but I felt I had lost my spark for all this and my own adventures with photography. Seeing the pure joy and happiness all over your face made me so happy for you! I felt like a friend sharing your triumph and victory! And yes I got super excited when you said " I have hidden something over there." (All mysterious like, lol) My a.d.d. kicked in and I couldn't sit still any longer, going "It's the bike he talked about!!!" Like a dozen times! Haha! Life has been stupid recently and this ^^^^^ this is just what I needed. A good adventure of exploration and a great friend to share with! Thank you, Norm!
Hi Norm. Because of this video, my wife and I went to visit this amazing area of Japan 3 weeks ago and stayed in Magome-Juku for 2 nights and also hiked to Tsumago. That was the highlight of our trip and we will keep the memory for ever. Just came here to thank you for the amazing content . We felt the energy of this place as you express in this video. thank you
3 years ago when this video came out I was in such a bad place mentally but told myself once I'd get back on my feet that I would hike this exact trail when I'd visit Japan. 1.5 weeks ago I managed to do so and I don't think I've ever been more at peace than I was there. (besides thinking about bears from time to time). to anyone who's thinking of adding this hike to your itinerary, do it! you won't have any regrets.
Nothing. I mean NOTHING like a theme park! You can feel the history on this walk. I did it 2019, loved it. Loved the fact that in May it is empty of people.
Since been living in Japan for 10 yrs from now I think it's everywhere you go around Japan you will find the same atmosphere ....very serene..clean...quite...I mean it's so good for contemplation and meditation..
@@TokyoLens Utterly thrilled you’ve made it here! I walked the first 20km or so a week before I had to escape Japan due to COVID-19. It’s utterly beautiful. I took some amazing photos here, but so jealous you saw it after dark. Can’t wait to come back and walk the whole route in a few years time
Watching this video felt like meditation. Not only did you bring us on a beautiful walk but somehow I feel much more grateful of life and the gift of life in general. The music, the talking and the videography all suited each other so perfectly!
My husband and I (plus a friend) did this walk about 4 years ago. It's magical. We felt the same as you - pure joy. Watching your video brought tears to my eyes. There's something about the breeze through the rice paddies... Amazing. And the little tea houses /traditional rest stops were lovely.
The trail looks like a scene out of a Ghibli movie. Mesmerisingly beautiful. Thanks for taking us along Norm, it's definitely sitting up there on my bucket list at the moment.
I loved the Nakasendo. In May, after Golden Week we had it pretty much to ourselves. I also really loved the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, accessible from Takamatsu on Shikoku. Great hiking and easy to get off the beaten trail.
“Happiness and sweat…but mostly happiness.” Great to see you enjoying yourself, Norm. Your energy is infectious and I really appreciate the bgms you choose for this video! It gives off that sense of wonder that suits the video so well.
This is the Japan I wish to know. Beautiful forests, lots of history, and kind people. Really quaint that the only vending machine, was three rooms deep, into a traditional looking inn.
The Nakasendo trail is an absolute dream of mine to experience. Potential for bears and everything, the whole experience looks indescribably wonderful.
Always wanted to explore Japan but I have a chronic illness that would prevent me from doing the long hikes. Thank you for taking me ( all of us) along with you! It’s beautiful and it feels like I’m right there along with you. 😊 Grateful from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 🍁
I totally get how hyped you must be. All my life since I was maybe 11 I wanted to go to Japan. It just always attracted me. Language, culture and the beautiful rural areas in particular. I was finally going in 2020 but corona hit so bad and I was literally forced to not go..(nurses couldnt leave the country). Now 3 years later I am planning to go at some point with my husband, who, luckily, shares my enthusiasm😊 thanks for these great videos!
This place feels like a scene out of Zelda games with the ringing of the bells. The light to the trees is just breathtaking. Love the end slip hahaha can't wait for what's to come :) much love Norm
Man.. Your channel is so underrated. The effort you put into your videos is just amazing. Beautiful visuals, wonderful music, great editing and so much more. I hope this channel gets more exposure and subs.
I did this hike in 2015. It's every bit as amazing as Norm says. And if you thought Magome looks beautiful at night, it's even better in the early morning. I happened to wake up just before dawn and wandered around the street taking pictures and just soaking in the scenery. I remember that hairpin curve! It's pretty fun if you are hiking with a group and can take a group shot with people further up/down the trail. Note if you are hiking the trail in early spring (March-April) - some parts such as the bridges may still be iced over or snow-covered, and are therefore extremely slippery. Mind your step!
When i think about Japan, this town and forest is what comes to mind. Just so beautiful! I really hope that one day i can see it for myself, but for now, thank you so much for filming. Also... omg those stars!
I like how this guy doesn't use filters over his videos or doesn't do any heavy editing. Just pure, what you see here is what you will see when you go there.
Made the trifecta! This is an incredibly gorgeous trail, and just went to the top of my must-do things for whenever I can visit Japan. Those night shots were just amazing as well. Glad to see nothing bad happened to the bike! Thanks for bringing this along on this one.
I was an exchange student in Japan back in 2008/2009 and in 2016 finally went back for 5 weeks to visit my host family and to travel a bit inside Japan. I did this hike back then and this video made me so nostalgic! Japan is such a beautiful country with such rich history and hidden nature gems. Can't wait to go back!
Okay, gonna get maudlin here... Whenever I see you get practically incendiary with happiness over a place or a view or a sight or sound or experience, it's like I can practically wave at you from across many, many miles and go "HI! I KNOW THAT FEELING!" and realize that other people feel the same explosion of joy over a personal thing-- a rock on the side of the road, sunrise on a path you've wanted to walk, the view from high up over a place to beautiful and strange to be real but which is. Thanks for this; it's nice to know that other people out there are feeling this too, because it's just too good not to be shared.
I really enjoy watching all these camping and hiking trips you've taken lately. Japan is so much more than just Tokyo and all the big city attractions. ❤
I remember a shop where sparrows had nested over the entrance. They closed the entrance and put out a sign to use the backdoor in order to not disturb the sparrows. I love stuff like this. And I had planned to walk the Nakasendo in April 2020... well... I am keeping fingers crossed for next year.
Oh this makes me so envious, I want to walk the Nakasendo trail so badly after watching this. It never fails to amaze me how well you shoot your videos
Your voice is really soothing. It's fascinating to hear you talk about this with so much enthusiasm. It truly makes the video feel magical. I'm excited to walk the trail myself. Thank you.

This is seriously one of the funnest hiking videos I have ever watched. Your enthusiasm is contagious and reminds all of us nature lovers of our own giddiness on a good trail🥰
Magical, can't wait to get back and hike more of Japan's brilliant countryside. I feel too many get distracted by the cities and overlook the uniqueness of hiking Japan. All the little towns, statues and shrines, just can't compare!
This is one of the most magical places I've ever visited, and I've been to a lot of them! Wholeheartedly recommend anyone on the fence to please go and visit. You won't regret it :)
I love coming back to this video when i feel down or unmotivated. The scenery and music just makes me happy, and make me want to go work even harder, so that I one day can visit these sort of places myself. My plans to go to Japan back in 2020 got spoiled because of covid, and I lost my drive. But these sort of videos keep my dream of going to japan alive. Keep up your amazing work. I love your stuff man.
Thank you for this beautiful video! We walked this section (Magome to Tsumago and stayed overnight at the Ryokan of your vending machine! Hanaya) about a month ago. It was spectacular. Very few people and such a sensation of peace.
Glad i found your video. It is so therapeutic and much needed therapy for me. The music, the scenery, your friendly voice. Felt like seeing a friend sharing his travel journey. Thank you.
I am absolutely just loving all these travel videos you've been doing, it's really awesome to be able to see all these locations. While the world has been going crazy and Japan feels more and more like a distant dream, your videos kinda keep that dream alive in a way. Thank you for all the work you put into this channel.
Its fazinating how emotional this made me... Its so unbelievebly calming seing you walk through the japanese coutryside and loving every single little detail about it. I was in japan in 2019 and was exactly the same way. Makes it feel like I´m the one walking this trail. Thanks norm for giving me and others the oportunity to appreciate japans beauty.
Absolutely beautiful hike! When I see your video's I almost have to cry cause I want to go back to the Japan so much! I enjoy watching your video's a lot cause it gives me the closest feeling of being in Japan again! Thanks!
this has to be my favorite video of all. (but I am going to watch the mystical forest next!) walking through the old Japanese towns with the narrow streets and old style houses just takes me back to my childhood when I just walked around these mountain towns all day during the summer. the natsukashi feelings are just overwhelming me
When you came out of the shop after rehydrating and hit the sun, that's nostalgia, I felt that! All those summer holidays in a village when the sun was beating down where even the shade was warm....good times. I absolutely love this place and I hope to see it with my own eyes one day. Gawd you're a wonderful chap that makes wonderful content :') Thank you Norm.
I must say your enthusiasm for Japanese country hiking is very contagious. When you film your post town walking I'm reminded how amazing our nature is...in many unspoiled places. I worked in SE Alaska on a couple nature projects and found their Tongass rain forest very memorable too...with whales spouting just offshore, bald eagles seemingly everywhere and the fear of running into a giant brown bear all made my senses sharper. Looking forward to more trips of yours. Cheers.
I'm Japanese, I was born in Japan and I've never visit other country, but I'd never know the Nakasendo, also I had no idea such as beautiful scenes still are rest in Japan, until watching this video (perhapsly, I'd heard it by other media, but I'd never pay attention!).Thank you, Norm, for sending great information!
Just came back to rewatch the video that finally made me book my plane ticket to japan back in April 🥺 Norm, you are the reason and inspiration behind me being able to experience this mesmerizing trail this upcoming November. Thank you, thank you.. thank you.
Norm, this is probably the best video that I have ever seen on youtube period🥺 Everything about it is just so perfect, the soundtrack, the cinematography, even your voice😂 I really love it. it really makes me want to move to Nagano/ Gifu prefecture, just so that I can see this beautiful place with my own two eyes❤❤
This town looks like it was designed to be a small peaceful town you can stumble on in a videogame. The trail as well. With the little shops and rest stops, perfect for an adventurer to recharge and stop for a minute and then continue on an amazing journey. The added adrenaline of a possible bear encounter just makes it feel even more like a videogame quest.
This was so amazing and beautiful, and I hope I'll get to experience this when I visit Japan next year. Side note, I recently moved from all my friends and family for a better job opportunity by myself, and your videos along with others have helped keep me going, so thank you so much!
OMG just happy cried with your joy starting at 12:53!!! It sort of looked like your eyes were getting a "bit sweaty" as well. Makes me feel so good to see you happily sauntering down the trail ! Epic and Beautiful. Beer and eggs. Yup watching it again!!!!
Magome-juku is one of the places I'd love to see the most when I visit Japan. All the locations in this video feel like straight out of a Ghibli movie. Doesn't get any better than this!
This place is so beautiful!! You're happiness and excitement is given if this was in your bucket list in a long time and to finally experienced it!! This too will definitely go to my japan bucket list once I finally go there one day! Thank you for filming such a beautiful and amazing place! Much love!
Your videos have sort of magical power to make people feel calm and peaceful. The background music you chose is also nice to listen. Thanks for making these quality videos.
I have to say this was shot beautifully, I can tell the difference that you tried new things with this video and I have to say, perfectly done. The weather conditions were also perfect for the occasion.
What a wonderful find! I'm enthralled by all things Japan. It is such a pleasure to see these beautiful post towns and lovely hike, but most of all, your love of Japan completely shines through! I've subscribed, and look forward to seeing all your videos
my father completed the trek when he was in his early 20s. He was astonished when he first read about it in his language or history course book during his school days. He kept on dreaming of it until he finally did it. He still remembers it with such sense of achievement. He definitely does not regret it.
My goodness, this is absolutely beautiful! As soon as I started watching I was instantly captivated by the gorgeous scenery, both nature and the lovely Japanese villages! I absolutely need to do this hike!
Notification, watches to the end, comment and patreon squad person here just to say this was an incredible video! Makes me so happy to see adventures like this at at time when it's near impossible travel. Looking forward to more!
This video was just so peaceful, I usually only watch half a video cause I get bored… but I got lost in the forest and felt your joy walking around the moss covered cobblestone trails, I would love to travel here someday. Cinematically, this video was outstanding and had me glued to the screen, feeling like I was there on the hike with you. The narration and music was perfectly fitting. I can’t quite explain it but something about this video is different. Well done, you’ve earned yourself a sub.

When you came out of the shop after rehydrating and hit the sun, that's nostalgia, I felt that!
All those summer holidays in a village when the sun was beating down where even the shade was warm....good times.
I absolutely love this place and I hope to see it with my own eyes one day.
Gawd you're a wonderful chap that makes wonderful content :')
Thank you Norm.
Deep respect for all the backtracking you did for these amazing scenery shots. It seemed so, so peaceful 💜
Trifecta squad rise up! Loved seeing the beautiful hikes in nature. Definitely going to add this to my list of things to do when I make it to Japan!
Sadly too much importance is placed on schooling and work life. You must have a balance to be able to enjoy it.
Ive been binging a lot of your content since I found you and this is my favorite one so far!
This place is so beautiful!! You're happiness and excitement is given if this was in your bucket list in a long time and to finally experienced it!! This too will definitely go to my japan bucket list once I finally go there one day! Thank you for filming such a beautiful and amazing place! Much love!
I'm thinking this trail needs to go on my bucket list. I love a challenge so hiking the full trail from Tokyo to Kyoto would be a dream
I already know this is going to be amazing!!
😊
日本人です。
中山道トレイル、聞いたこともなかったし、こんなに素晴らしい観光資源があるなんて知らなかった。
私にとってdiscover Japanでした。
素晴らしい紹介をありがとう。
Your videos have sort of magical power to make people feel calm and peaceful. The background music you chose is also nice to listen. Thanks for making these quality videos.
I have to say this was shot beautifully, I can tell the difference that you tried new things with this video and I have to say, perfectly done. The weather conditions were also perfect for the occasion.
This is a very inspiring video. We need to plan another trip to Japan!
Watched till the end…. What a great vid and bgm …really refreshing…Thanks for video
My goodness, this is absolutely beautiful! As soon as I started watching I was instantly captivated by the gorgeous scenery, both nature and the lovely Japanese villages! I absolutely need to do this hike!
Me too.
Well done, you’ve earned yourself a sub.
enjoyed your video, amazing pace and music choice!
so peaceful and lots of history
Those places look amazing. Now, this trail is a Must in my list for my next trip to Japan. Thank you Norm, for showing us such beautiful paths
