A lot of people have asked how much our power bill is with this setup, but since they're all LED's, it literally isn't even noticeable. Great for a home studio!
Tom I have watched all of your light setup videos over the years. It is really cool to see how you have upgraded along the process and growth of your channel. If you want to be successful at anything in life you have to invest in it, be it money, time, blood, sweat, and tears. I am in the process of setting up my space to start recording and definitely starting at the budget friendly setup. When it starts to grow and as I can I will be upgrading along the way.
So many lights! Love it. Fun to hear the evolution of your setup and how you approach it. Your lighting matches your UA-cam persona - bright and cheerful. Looking forward to the Pavo Tube review!
Hey Tom, great video as always. I spent most of my day fiddling with the lighting in my home studio, and it's the first time I've played with lighting. Your attention to detail really shows in your studio. As far as the fan in your key light is concerned, you may be able to upgrade it. I used to build computers, and the best case fans were from a company called Noctua.
So glad you’re having fun experimenting with lighting! The fan in the light has been going strong for two years now, so I’m feeling pretty happy with it! It’s always exciting to experiment though!
I rarely ever do any front-of-the-camera video so I'm not too into lighting aside from one I use for zooms etc... but after seeing that crispy intro, I had to watch it all...and now I want one of those pocket canons.
Thanks man! Just recently got the Smallrig 120D. It is now my key light. I have a Neewer bi-color light for my backlight and a soft box for my fill. Haven’t gotten into the accents…YET. But I’ll try to keep them under 13 😂

Lighting technology has come a long way in the last few years. And as pricey as some of those LEDs can be, compared to what was available even 4-5 years ago they're practically giving them away!
It’s pretty crazy! And the fact that they take hardly any power and emit no heat is amazing. Anyone who’s burned themselves on a tungsten light knows the pain.
I know this is unrelated but I called in to do a radio interview using my cell. I recorded it using the Rodecaster Pro SD card. Had volume on Rodecaster cell icon turned up, had volume on cell turned up. Yet my recorded voice through my podmic sounded great. The AM radio interviewer's voice was VERY low. What am I doing wrong? Thought of everything (LOL apparently not) can you suggestion what's wrong? THANKS!!!! Learned a TON from your channel.
I wish I had a more concrete answer, but off the top of my head (since I can't see the setup firsthand), I would recommend using multitrack mode if you're not already. That way you can isolate the caller's audio and boost it if necessary.
Thank you🧡. How do you think is it a good way to get a COB light like yours, but with more silent fan, for a working computer place - I teach students online. Or it is too bright and a daylight temperature is not an ideal for constant daily activity? I actually would like to have a good light with a softbox instead of a LED panels, just not sure is this a good variant. One LED panel I already have so looking for a good key light. Also this is for lightning me, sitting at a computer, and a background, no physical boards and so on.
Tom I absolutely love your ethics and the statement you have available. Would you mind that if and when I want to share my videos online that I can use it as the basis for my ethics, you just say it how it is and should be. Its for me personally and not any commercial basis and I havent even started to produce any videos yet as i am still learning so much about this from channels like yours.
This was a very intense light setup but it looks great. I totally agree with you get what you pay for. If you really need it, not cause u want it, then save and buy the good stuff. But one can start with a more economic one and work up. Also the puns 😂😂😂
Hey Tom, thanks for all of your great content! I would love to know the dimensions of your office and layout of your setup. I have a large glass whiteboard that is a pain in the ass with light reflections if you have any tips on getting rid of that??
The room is about 12’ x 12’ and me desks are 6’ long. The drum set is too big 😃 As for the whiteboard, removing reflection will likely have to do with experimenting in the position of your light and camera. If you search up some videos about removing glare in people’s glasses, I bet similar techniques would apply 👍
The high key setup is very enlightening. It’s shame it takes quite a bit of gear to do. People often criticize the prevalence of low key in the Tech/gear UA-cam space but often it’s the most cost effective setup for video lighting for new and smaller channels
Yes and no. More lights usually do cost less money, but I’ve seen more than a few channels where the single key light alone is worth almost as much as my entire setup 🤷🏻♂️
It really depends on how many lights you're looking to get for under $1K. The Amaran lineup seems to be a really good overlap between affordable and semi-durable (depending on how careful your students are with equipment).
Great video Tom - was super interesting to see all the accent lights and how you position them. Did you have to change any of your camera framing to avoid getting the hair light in the shot?
The Elgato key lights are quite compact and surprisingly heavy duty. They’re usually a bit harsh when facing someone directly but look great when bounced off a wall or ceiling.
Aloha Tom! Great video and your lighting, sound, and camera are stellar. Quick question - where did you get the desk mat (multi-color) if you have a source. Thanks!
I really think the FalconEyes is an awesome key light. The RX18 will do pretty much everything you need. Then a nice full light of some kind. Even the little Aputure MC’s can be great for that!
Hey Tom, ACES video as always man! Question for you on the Nanlite PavoTubes - how is the heat on those? I have several Godox TL 120s, and while I love them for quick b-roll lighting, I've found they give off a ton of heat in long term usage. Thanks, man!
Hey Tom, you're the only glow light that the room needs, haha. And yes, ...I RGBelieve in you too. lol. Ummm, when are we going to get a guitar or drum solo from you? Soooo freaky, but I have the same desk clock (from amazon) AND (Ikea) CHAIR as you! You forgot to tell us where you bought your shirt (that you never change, because you look good in it) though. ;P
Haha, this is my "filming shirt"- gotta love blue plaid. And you should've seen the 3 hour live stream last week! It got a bit wacky with drums and guitar 😁
@@tombuck I was teasing of course. I actually love that shirt on you. Hopefully I won't miss your next live stream, as my wife and I were leading an online group last night too. 😊💙
Do you capture the heat generated by these lights to heat your jacuzzi? :-) I'm guessing most of them don't generate too much heat or use too much power these days.
@@tombuck Guess I missed the personal podcast in the list of things. Just subscribed. Love your other podcast with Peter. I'm sure your personal one is great too.
I know you don’t Stream for gaming but would you be able to do a video on how to set up a gaming stream with like obs or any other streamer application. Like best places or how to make designs/emotes for your stream?
I’d love to, but that’s a bit out of my expertise at the moment. However, I have been poking around with streamlabs.com and it seems like you can do so much with it!
I don’t do a UA-cam show so my lights are for interview. My main light is a Aputure 300X which is so powerfull but also very controllable. I’ve been wait for 3 months for my new Aputure NOVA P300c RGBWW LED Panel and I have 6 Aputure MC’s I keep looking at the
This might not be the perfect explanation, but it's related to the cycling of electricity. It usually happens so fast that your eyes wont notice it, but a camera can pick it up (depending on shutter speed, frame rate, etc). Dedicated video lights account for this and are designed to prevent flicker.
Hey Tom looking for a cost affordable light for my background. I have a lot of lights around my computer need something to light my background up that’s affordable and won’t break the bank. Any thoughts ?
Depends on how inexpensive you're looking for. Amaran makes some really excellent lights that are pretty dang high quality for the price. But if you're on a tight budget, Godox and Neewer have some decent options too.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but my key light is a 200 watt light (I could definitely get by with less). All the lights together don't take very much energy since they're all LEDs.
“It took me three and a half years to be happy with the lighting in this room.”
I felt that.
I should've mentioned in the video that since these are all LED lights, they generate very little heat (if any) and have virtually no effect on our electric bill. In fact, there's no difference in our electric bill with this setup compared to when I started and was using only a desk lamp and ceiling fan light. 💡

I'm curious as to where you got your deskpad/large mousepad. 🤔
I found it on Amazon from a brand called GDBT
Cool. Thanks!
I come for the content but stay for the puns
Do you capture the heat generated by these lights to heat your jacuzzi? :-) I'm guessing most of them don't generate too much heat or use too much power these days.
They're LED's! No heat! It's magic.
Another great video. Can you shine some light on when the next Podcast will drop.
My personal podcast comes out every Monday. Peter and I will hopefully get to record our show soon now that his new studio is done.
@@tombuck Guess I missed the personal podcast in the list of things. Just subscribed. Love your other podcast with Peter. I'm sure your personal one is great too.
Haha, they’re a little different. 😬
Personally I think there needs to be more background separation, it's very bright
It's tv lighting, but he's done an amazing job
YOU are a forza to be reckoned with 😂
Nice.
13 lights! Wow
Just went to check out the price on the PavoTubes, they seem like the sort of thing I'd be able to make use of... Ulp!
Worth it though!
@@tombuck Yeah, they look great. Can't wait for the full review from you!
Thx for this
Where did you get that mousepad?
It's from a brand called GDBT on Amazon
“Delightful” ok Big Pun 🤣🤣🤣
Tom, how big is your studio? Mine is small-ish, and it appears yours might be as well. But it looks larger based on your shooting angles.
It’s roughly 12’ x 12’ 👍
@@tombuck Ok. Same as mine!!
How do you create chapter markers?
If you put time stamps in your description starting with 0:00, it’ll create them automatically.
@@tombuck Thanks
I don’t do a UA-cam show so my lights are for interview. My main light is a Aputure 300X which is so powerfull but also very controllable. I’ve been wait for 3 months for my new Aputure NOVA P300c RGBWW LED Panel and I have 6 Aputure MC’s I keep looking at the
We got the 300X at work a while ago and it is super bright! I love it.
That intro was a Tungsten Twister 🥴
Bravo sir, bravo!
"There are literally thousands of uses for corn...all of which I will tell you about, right now..." - Tina (Pee-Wee's Big Adventure). 🤣🤣🤣
Big props for a Pee Wee quote 😁
Never been this early on a VIdeo, Love your Jokes, Great Lighting Setup!
Glad you like them!
Why DO led lights flicker?? Nice video
This might not be the perfect explanation, but it's related to the cycling of electricity. It usually happens so fast that your eyes wont notice it, but a camera can pick it up (depending on shutter speed, frame rate, etc). Dedicated video lights account for this and are designed to prevent flicker.
I would like to see a video about your guitars. ;)
Can you please make a basic setup lighting video for people starting zoom meeting. Zero knowledge with lights. Thank you
That's a great idea! I'll add it to my video idea list 👍
@@tombuck thanks Tom enjoy following you
Nice
now i’m your fan Tom 😉
Woo hoo! 🙌 ❤️
Great video! Now save money to upgrade 😅
It’s definitely a step by step process.
How much Watt current you are using for lights
Please reply
I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but my key light is a 200 watt light (I could definitely get by with less). All the lights together don't take very much energy since they're all LEDs.
