I enjoyed every bit of this journey with Mateo and Rufus as they navigated their surroundings and emotions from a new perspective, one that consequently developed after they each received a phone call from Death-Cast.

I remember reading this book last year. It was beautiful and I knew they were gonna die but I still was sobbing.
Even with that title, I didn’t want to believe they were going to die. They kept talking about being possible exceptions, and I was coping so hard 🥹
At first, i almost didn't care, but by the end i literally couldn't believe they were dead 😭 i wanted to cry so bad it was such a good book 😢
same, I just recently read the book. I knew that they were going to die (partly because of how I was introduced to the book), but it didn't hit me until about the middle of the book, THEY ARE GOING TO DIE. my favourite character, Mateo, is going to die.
I was super sad when Mateo died. I almost cried too, I'm not the one to get emotional over books, but it's so hard not to.
I only finished it today. I got on the first of November and I just started bawling because although I knew that they would both die it still hurt, especially Mateo's death and how Rufus reacted.

I've heard the name of this book somewhere and because of this video I intend to research it further. I find it romantically tragic how them finding each other made them live their lives to the extreme, at the same time that it marked their end, reminds me of a Greek tragedy.

Let me be delusional and pretend that they’re still alive and happy and well and gay and happy. This is absolutely amazing though, the art is stunning and I almost cried after remembering how aggressively I annotated that book.

I really do not know how im just now seeing this, but its been over a year since i finished that book and i still cry about it today (I WAS JUST CRYING ABOUT THE OTHER BOOK)
This animatic was wonderful and made me emotional again.
I remember reading this book some time back and I remember I finished it in less than a day and when American Pie was mentioned in the book, I finished the rest of the book listening to it in the background. Idk what possessed me to do that tho cuz the heart break was especially spicy after that- pretty sure I had an existential crisis after that 💀

The absolute pain this very book made me feel. Even though it's condensed, watching this made me feel like I was experiencing the book all over again.
I read The First to Die at the End, which is the prequel. That book shattered me. I'd say that is my favorite book, which The Song of Achilles coming in second and They Both Die at the End as third.

This brought back a lot of feelings I felt for this story that I’ve hidden away. I know it’s just fictional, I know it’s just a book, but goddam it is so unfair. I feel guilty for their deaths somehow. I could have prevented it even though all I did was flip pages in a book. I feel so deeply attached to every single character (except the assholes) even though I know they aren’t real. In some imaginary part of my world, they’re still alive and happy today.

It’s been a year and a half since I read the book at I figured I could handle watching this…
…I was dead wrong.
I loved this video so much I had to watch it twice!! I personally listened to the audiobook version only and watching this I could almost hear the actors speaking those quotes and it just put me back into the story so hard. Like I’m on the verge of tears this is such a good animatic! The thing I love and “hate” about this story is that the journey of Rufus & Mateo is so compelling and engaging and then your left on their death and it’s so sad and it’s almost like the book leaves you in a state of mourning for these characters without any follow up. It’s very bittersweet. And whenever I revisit this story I always think “what if Mateo just stayed in bed with Rufus” but I guess then the story wouldn’t have as much impact. Ahhhhh!!! NOW I’M EMOTIONALLY DAMAGED AGAIN!!!!🥲😭💔
I would have to agree with you on that. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the development between these characters; however, that ending left me unsatisfied and utterly brokenhearted. But as much as we want there to be alternate ending, or even just a little bit more to it than their abrupt deaths, we knew it was coming. It was iterated several times throughout the book that people like themselves live out their last days with the hope that they’d be the exception, but no one has ever accomplished this. I guess, in a way, our blind hope for them to live on made their demise that much more devastating in the end.
This is my sign to reread it.
