    i cant express how confused i was when i found out the spongebob musical was going to be a thing...
    but it turned out to be really good, and im honestly really happy it wasnt just trying to be a money-grabbing, heartless, and unecessary musical.
    it was really heartfelt and i really do have to give the creator props for trying to create legitimate art.

      Shrek the musical was technically the first professional show I was ever in. I was the deer who gets their antlers ripped off and one of the Dulocian puppets. I was ten. And I loved every minute of it.

    Speaking of "money-grabbing," I'm really interested in how Monopoly the Musical is going to adapt a board game that most people get tired of before finishing into a show that people will want to watch all the way through. I felt so weird reading Hasbro's "bio." Who knows? Maybe we'll see a musical from Walmart or Proctor & Gamble or NASA.

      dontpugme okay but NASA the musical? im here for that

    • @dontpugme
      @dontpugme 7 років тому +6

      But actually, that would be awesome! I was kinda unsatisfied with how the film version of The Martian turned out. I can see it being hilarious as a musical. Or maybe a show about a more serious NASA event. With how good Come From Away is, that might be really cool.

      Thats how I feel about Spongebob and Pokemon the musical, because you're trying to turn single and sometimes two part episodes that have very little to do with each other, other than the characters and places, so its very odd to turn it into a cohesive script and songs with characters that will be very difficult to sing in the voices chosen for the characters, the costumes would also be very difficult to dance and design to make it seem "realistic"

  • @SEH221
    @SEH221 8 років тому +110

    I totally agree with you on the technical design of the show. I was BLOWN AWAY but the set and the costumes and the projection. If the musical succeeds in NYC, I see Tony noms in all the technical department.

      +ATWS Luke yeah Farquaard was amazing and personally I absolutely love Brian in it, and some of the songs are pretty good, 'When Fords Fail' and 'Who I'd Be' come to mind, but those work pretty much as standalone pieces ....

      @atwsluke4954 8 років тому +1

      +Gabriela Rodriguez I agree, but they aren't stand alone pieces, even though they work like that, each one of those songs in that show, in my opinion, are good songs, the problem shrek, is that it isn't too complex, but I think the music and acting is pretty good

    I understand the inclination to give a pass to media made with children in mind to say "well it's for kids it doesn't have to be great" but highly disagree with this sentiment. The wealth of well crafted, well thought out, and quality children's media that exists shows me that kids media doesn't have to be bad. Making excuses for things that aren't good because they are meant for kids to me seems like cop-out and a disservice to kids. I just don't think any sort of laziness in production should be looked over just because kids may like it when they are kids.

    Re: the projection tracking, Disneyland just started using something similar in their Frozen musical (they project around the actors and, when Anna turns to ice, on top of them). My understanding is they're tracking the actors/set realtime with the same motion capture tech you get from the Kinect.

    Having multiple songwriters contributing to the score of a musical and it not actually being a jukebox musical doesn't seem to be a particularly successful strategy as far as making solid musicals goes. I can only think of *Working*, but that score apparently lacked cohesion and the story wasn't cohesive, either.

    As an adult, I think that it was very well made and fun to watch, but it is definitely more directed to the children, and that's not particularly a bad thing in any sense. For one, Spongebob has always had a bigger appeal towards children, and for two, it's always nice to have a musical that makes children have a smile on their face instead of just television or phones. I would call this a "feel good" musical because I think their main objective was not to be taken too seriously.

    I'm surprised by even the thought of a musical based off a board game (anyone heard of Clue the Musical?). But, in further research, I found out that The Araca Group - a theatrical merchandise and production company - is not only partnering with Hasbro to create Monopoly the Musical, it is also co-producing The SpongeBob Musical. Interesting.

    I'm sure they used projection mapping, but I'm almost certain they used a version of the technology called Lumipen which tracks a moving object with extreme precision. It makes whatever illusion you're trying to create seem very present and organic. I'm currently taking a class on projection mapping and I find it really amazing. I'd love to see what they've done in this show. Here's a video on that process if you'd like to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/p7IL0Gvux7U/v-deo.html

      Most of the critique is "Why does Spongebob even NEED a musical?". But like 'Oh my god It's that guy' said, Who would have thought a hip hop musical adaptation of the life of a founding father that no one remembers would be deemed one of the most successful musicals ever?

    Answer to projection mapping question. -- This is the way it is done. ua-cam.com/video/p7IL0Gvux7U/v-deo.html -- Cirque du Soleil seems to achieve a similar effect with their tree. The tree is a grey "screen" that they project on. At certain points, it opens and the projections match the motion. ua-cam.com/video/R9D5nvZ-jxA/v-deo.htmlm34s The next clip betrays the grey screen element because of the spotlights on the climbers. ua-cam.com/video/R9D5nvZ-jxA/v-deo.htmlm59s

We've had films and video games in the past that were cartoony but were mostly aimed to adults *cough cough Conker's bad fur day and Fritz the Cat cough cough* yet some kids actually know what they are.
    I'm not saying I want a 18+ Spongebob musical, I'm just saying that I want a spongebob musical that has the look and feel of spongebob yet have a good amount of jokes to entertain the older demographic, like seasons 1-4 did, to appeal to multiple demographics.
    Sorry about my long comment and opinion, I just wanted it to get off my chest. :)

    I saw it and I totally agree with the plot issue. The plot was super weak and there were too many subplots. Spongebob himself didn't interact with the main cast for a whole act! There was a lack of character interaction and plots tying into each other. Everyone was sort of doing their own solo thing so there was little characters bouncing off of each other. I still love it though.

    Pretty sure the projection technique was video mapping, there's loads of stuff on youtube about it. It is pretty awesome stuff, especially seen live. Check out Freelusion's dances using it, they are spectacular.
    I knew Spongebob was becoming a musical, I didn't realise it was happening so soon though. Interesting thoughts on it, I'm glad you take the time to consider it as more than a money-grabbing scheme.

    I personally feel like if they work on the show that they could get kids more into theater. Which in modern times really needs to happen. I myself can’t get my little siblings into musicals that I know kids would love. If I told them about this musical that has characters that they have been growing up with that they would LOVE it. It’s a show that should be worked on for the people, not the fame

    I saw it this past weekend and my guess to how they did the projections moving like that was paint that only glows under black light. We used it for a show I was in once and it was VERY effective. Just a guess I have no idea.

    So I finally listened to the cast album for this musical and... I FUCKING LOVE IT.
    Like, I totally expected it to suck, but I ended up really loving the variety of musical styles. Like, I don't really care about the story, but the music is SO FUN to listen to.
    It just makes me really happy

    Do you think because of the versatility in the humor, style, and content in the Spongebob universe, ANY kind of musical just wouldn't work for this world?

  • @DerekMckean

    How about NO.PLOT, each character has their own song, but they all have 1 universal need. It works for Starlight Express and Cats. Has there ever been a time you sung " see me hustle, feel my muscle...pumping iron!" If you simplify the plot to something like Starlight Express where everyone just has 1 universal need, maybe the musical would be successful. Starlight Express did terrible on Broadway but ran at The Apollo Victoria in London for almost 20 years! Chess did horrible on Broadway because they added a strange new plot that London did not have. Even Tim Rice has stated that the official version of Chess is the one closer to the London production -- mostly sung through. And Chess works perfectly without a book. Yes, The American soeaks while everyone else sings PRESS CONFERENCE, according to the London version. The Broadway version cut it down to like 1 verse for Florence and 1 chorus instead of a 5 minute song.
    Conclusion: Cut the book.if it doesn't work and each character sing about their own needs and wants. Then you'll have a smash musical!
    But if you want to ROCK, I recommend going to the Winter Garden (Cats old theatre) and watching Alex Brightman in The School of Rock! Now, that's what I call a successful rendition of a movie made into a musical. Even though ALW regurgitated a variation from Variations for the Guitar Hero jam and Teachers Pet from the movie is in the musical, I say it might do as good as Jesus Christ Superstar, maybe even better!

    Though I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for, there's Flash Point (I think?) that might be a lead into the direction of what you're looking for. I'm linking Kate Jablonski's video (a local Chicago choreographer), and I had the immense pleasure of seeing the show, and the dancer and lighting were incredibly synced! A lot of work, but it was beautiful. :3 I hope you find your answers!

    When I hear things like Spongebob is gonna be a musical - it makes me think-- I NEED to write a Musical - I Can Do This Better!! -- (and I don't play an instrument ) so I guess you will be seeing my musical in 7yrs - since according to LinManuel Miranda - it takes 7yrs.

    I was in my thirties when the first season of SpongeBob aired on TV, and I've never had cable at home. But I got to see the televised stage production over The Holidays-, It intrigued me enough to seek out some of the source material later, and find out who created it and how ('cause that's just the sort of nerd I am). So it worked on that level.
    As someone with zero emotional attachment to the characters or their world. I really, *really* liked about 85% of it. The other 15%, it felt like the story was pulling back to keep the emotional tone at the same level as the TV show. I find myself wondering how different it would be if the series had ended after its third season, the way Hillenburg had wanted, and the primary audience would therefore have been the adults who watched the show 20 years ago, instead of kids who are watching it, today (and still having a happy ending, of course).

    Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark only worked for me because it had Carnage in it. Sure they didn't use right or even well, but just the fact that they got Carnage is a win XD

    Part of me wants to see it out of sheer morbid curiosity (because I've heard the plot involves a post-apocalypse setting, and I genuinely don't think Spongebob and dystopia should ever be in the same sentence, let alone the same plot), and part of me knows I would hate myself for spending the money. The entire thing sounds like a hot mess.

    Shrek was a weird musical I didn’t feel like it followed the movie exactly. It added to the story and some great songs. Sutton Foster was amazing.
