  • In this video clip four different textures are made in metal using burrs in the hand piece - rotary tool / dremel.
The leather texture has a highly reflective surface and is engraved with a 1 mm ball frazer in a random pattern.
The bark texture is done using short straight strokes in one direction using a 2 mm setting burr.
The stippling textured effect is done with a 1 mm ball frazer creating small dents similar to golf ball surface.
The satin finish is done with a glass fiber pen tool.
In this gents ring tutorial texturing is used to create contrast.

Hans this is very helpful. I've been considering attempting to make my own custom watch dial for a watch I have. I wanted it to be a shingling golden/copper color--like the sun--and was thinking of hammering out a brass dial. But the more I looked into things, hammering the brass causes the back-side of the dial to become warped. I think I'm going to give a go with the Dremel technique because carving the texture from the top doesn't seem like it has a noticeable effect on the back-side of the piece. This means I can carve out detailed designs on blank brass dials, finish them how I wish, and then install them in the case. Tis gives me hope that my project is possible, thank you for the video.

Awesome, it's a great way to add interesting texture instead of using hammers or rolling mills.

Can this be done with titanium? Knife scales, not large pieces.

Maybe in theory but it will generate a huge amount of sparks. It's scary to grind titanium!
