Do engines like these have an alternator to charge a 12v battery? Mine is an older Mercury Mariner 2 stroke and looks almost identical electrically.

the 0G serial number isn't the newer serial number compared to the 1B serial number. Its actually about 10 yrs older of the 2...

Hi Ted, I bought a 16' Monark bass boat with a 9.9hp two stroke merc, its also a 1996 model. When I got it home I cleaned the fuel line and changed the filter, (it sat for 20 years under tarp, still in great shape). Unbelievably it started after a couple of cranks. It ran for about 15 minutes then died. Hasn't run since. I checked spark and have spark on the top cyl, and none in the bottom. After watching your video, I changed output peads on the coils, and it changed to the bottom cyl, and none on the top. I put a new aftermarket switchbox on, and, same thing, spark on top none on bottom. So I bought a new, old stock quicksilver switchbox, and same result. Any clues?

The trigger under the flywheel sounds like the issue. Try measuring the windings for resistance. So stator is good, coils and switchboard is OK. I would also try a little carb cleaner in the intake to see if it fires. If so clean the carb.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 I rebuilt the carb/fuel pump, and I will retest the trigger windings. Thanks a million!!

Hi Ted, I thought I would give you an update on my 96 9.9hp mercury. I checked the ohms on both the old and new triggers. The new one was at the very top of the "good" range, and the old one, probably the original, was at the very bottom of the "good" range. I put the old one back on, and low and behold, spark on both cylinders. I have run it in the tank, (cut down poly drum), for about 3 hours, and was actually able to adjust the carb that I had previously rebuilt. It is running smooth and the compression has come up ten pounds, from 50 to 60. (It had set for 20 years), I want to get it in the lake and run it hard to see if it improves. I don't think this motor has 50 hrs on it.

@@waynewolfe8817 excellent news, being able to get it to idle means it's likely running on both cylinders

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 what made you suspect the trigger? It fired faithfully on the top, I assumed the switch box.

do you know where I can buy a few feet of the color coded wires for a merc 650 in the 2207872 series or 2872319? red, yellow, gray, black, salmon, white and brown?

Check around with your local marine repair facilities, especially the ones that do outboard repowers. Ask them if they have an old outboard harness you can but to cut up for your needs.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Thx, good idea. I did exactly that. The repair shop sold me some wire, but they were all out of 14 gauge wire in their repair facility. So I asked for 12 gauge, it's thicker. The fellow said he wouldn't sell it to me because it might not carry the load. Idiot. So I got some at a hardware store. Ultimately, I did replace all the wires and I did restore spark.

@baubljos103 oh man, he didn't know 12 is bigger than 14. That's scary.
