    The keyboardist is Janne Wirman. He's incredible, and he and Alexi had played together so much that they could follow each other through solos.

      When you play together with someone for so long, so many years, you know already where they're going to go, what they're going to do & likewise for them. The war of razors they do live is a good example. Anyone whos played with a particular person for a long time knows exactly what this is.

      Remember that these guys recorded at least the first three albums at Astiastudio on a tape recorder. so if they weren't satisfied with one note in the song, they played the whole song again, from beginning to end, until they were satisfied.

      I mean they were instrumental in fusing melodic death and power/speed metal together but to say they were one of the first bands to "kinda split genres" is a pretty broad claim. If you mean infusing different metal subgenres, that had been done 15 years before CoB by a boat load of bands.

    People that followed the band knew that he had been having health problems related to his alcoholism for years. When the Blooddrunk album came out is when I remember there being a lot of speculation about it in the fanbase. "Blooddrunk" is supposedly, at least partially, a reference to a health issue he started having where heavy drinking would cause his stomach to bleed and then acid reflux would kick the blood into his throat/mouth so he would taste blood. Even after that he didn't stop drinking unfortunately, maybe it was already too late by then. We were kind of just waiting for the other shoe to drop. That being said, it was a shock still because we didn't know how bad it had gotten until he passed. Apparently Alexi had quit drinking finally a year or two before he died but by that time he'd done too much irreversible damage to his liver. The band knew how things were going but they kept his terminal status a secret, so we all just woke up one day to the news that he'd been terminally ill for awhile and he died.

    "I am not hearing anything that's like wicked technical". Hehe, that is funny since some of the CoB peices are extremely hard to play on guitar, especialy some of the Alexi's leads. He had this gift to make things that are really hard to play sound not that hard and easy to listen. But when you actualy try to play it, it is not easy at all. Plus, in some songs, he plays leads and solos AND sings at the same time, which is insane..... If you think Silent night Bodom Night is not technical, I would really love to know what do you consider technical lol. But yeah, you did not listen to Kissing the Shadows or songs from Something Wild..... You need to be really skilled instrumentalist to play CoB songs. There are plenty of hidden things you miss when you just listen to it, especially for the first time. The more you listen to CoB, the more you realize how genius this band (and especialy their frontman) was.

Everything he did was unique and is instantly recognizable. It still pains me that he isn't around to write anything now, I'm sure he would've written some classics in Bodom After Midnight. Silent night bodom night is definitely one of my favorite songs of cob. For me the harp part with the interrupting guitar smashes and this dirty "uah!" right before the melodic chuggyish part is one of my favorite parts in my musical experiences. It hits me so hard every time I listen to it, I just can't go through the song playing it in moderate volume, there's always this urge to move hard and I always get goosebumps. Also it reminds me of my early days of becoming a metalhead, so there's the nostalgia bonus.
    Bodom will always have a special place in my heart and it saddens me that I've never saw them live and I never will.
    Rest in peace Alexi 🖤

    CoB was maybe The first metal band from My home country I discovered somewhere around 98-2000 (I was maybe 12-13yrs old) after listening a motherload of albums of My big Brother (mostly Iron Maiden, WASP, etc... Power metallish). I instantly loved Alexi's guitar shredding and still, over 20yrs later he is definitely My personal guitar hero, The goat.
    I recommend that you listen all their studio albums to get The whole Picture and to see how great composer and guitarist Alexi evolves during his career. According to Alexi from his biography, their goal was to always Make the next album angrier, More difficult and faster than The previous - and This Alexi and The boys very nicely accomplished.

    Children Of Bodom is something❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
    Aleksi... 😢😢😢😢😢😢
    Your research made a little mess in my mind now, today. So much impressions, memories, thoughts... Oh-oh-oh...
    The moment when you want to say so much and don't know where to start...
    Kim (I didn't see this in comments) is a musician, singer, colleague of Alexi in her (their?) band Sinergy and also his wife and a friend, she helped Alexi with lyrics a few times)))) Cute, I think.
    Every Time I Die: as some of early Alexi's music this song was inspired with his suicidal tendencies. But the song is one of my favourite of all times.
    All For Nothing: such a beautiful as a song can be. And the guitar and keys duet, dialog is just the best I have ever heard. Yes, there are so much feelings in this song. And he is the only guitar player during recording session for this album.
    Early years of COB - the Golden age❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Despite of sad tendencies or anything else the band was pure energy, and that was all on Aleksi - that's all him and his energy, his feeling. You can see changes which happened to him and to the band during years. Naturally, yes. Just saying. Love them alwas, any year. All of them are talented and hi-class musicians. But the energy was his - Alexi was a heart of a band. Nice or not - he is just a human and can be not really nice sometimes... Ask his bandmates😅 He could give them hard times, yes. Especially with his health and behaviour. But anyway he was a heart of COB. And still is. For me. And for many fans around the world.
    Thank you for this video.❤ Hope you've got to know more about COB and guys, about Aleksi.
    Horns up!

    So I actually discovered Children of Bodom because of Slayer. They had a couple songs on the Unholy Alliance, DVD along with Thine Eyes Bleed (Which also features Tom Araya's brother,) Lamb of God, and Mastodon. (They played In Your Face and Angels Don't Kill. Check that one out if you want a keyboard solo.) They had 5 albums out then, and the first 4 are definitely my favourites. I was really into them in 2008, but didn't really listen to their later stuff after that. Those early albums had some reoccurring themes going on, like the reaper on all the covers, and all the albums had one song that referenced the Lake Bodom murders. (Lake Bodom, Silent Night Bodom Night, Bodom After Midnight, Bodom Beach Terror.) I'd definitely class them as melodic death metal, although the vocals are higher than usual, and there is also a bit of neoclassical going on in the first 2 albums. Not all melodeath has keyboards either, like Amon Amarth is the melodic death metal band I listen to the most, but they don't usually have synths or keyboards.
    Just another note, I'm not sure what you're calling "cornball," that's what metal keyboard sounds like.

    Thanks for doing this vid. I am a die hard COB fan. Bodom After Midnight is the band Alexi formed after COB broke up in 2019 after almost 25 years.

    As an old cob fan this was a really good analysis of the band, not all correct but thats fair.😊 regarding alexi, im a guitarist myself and one of the reasons why i actually play guitar now is because of him. RIP.
    he's still a guy that is still highly praised as on of the best in his trade.

    my fav was everytime i die. i first listened to them in the 8th grade and they changed my life. Their impact in metal was that: they brought light to the darkness of black metal. The newer stuff was alright but the older stuff were golden.

    I've been to a lot of shows, COB was the best live band I've ever seen. I saw them in the early 2000s in MKE, Alexi gave it his all and was a maniac on stage. The first band shirt I ever got as a gift from my GF (wife now) was a Follow The Reaper shirt. Back then, online shopping wasn't what it is today and shirts for obscure melodeath bands from Europe were hard to come by in U.S. She had to import it from Germany and paid more to ship it than the cost of the shirt. Metal forever, R.I.P. Alexi \m/
    Edit after seeing end of video:
    Alexi was a non-stop party kind of guy. He toured for 20 years straight. Everyone around him knew he struggled with alcohol, but he was never able to conquer it. He married Kimberly Goss in 2002 and was separated in 2004, but never got divorced. He "married" an Australian a bit later and there a big hoopla after Kim revealed his cause of death since she was legally his real widow. In the later years, things were spinning out of control. He fired Roope Latvala out of the blue right before recording I Worship Chaos, Roope felt stabbed in the back and fell into his own alcoholic depression. COB somehow made one more album Hexed, but broke up soon after. Alexi formed Bodom After Midnight with only his rhythm guitarist from COB, which played COB songs live and started recording songs of their own.

    I remember seeing these guys live a long time back as the first opening band for a Dimmu Borgir tour. People were actually booing CoB during that show as I guess they weren’t “heavy enough” for that crowd. Many years later CoB became an arena headliner. Sadly CoB becomes a cautionary tale about alcoholism, as we could have had many more awesome songs from Alexi and crew.

    • @erikstorm8935
      @erikstorm8935 2 роки тому

      The irony...booing CoB for not being heavy enough, while being there to see Dimmu Borgir. I mean, Dimmu isn't exactly the epitome of heaviness. Not within extreme metal, anyway. And I say that as someone who LIKES them.

    • @GrimSRT8
      @GrimSRT8 2 роки тому

      @@erikstorm8935 Well I’m guessing this was back around 2000, and Dimmu was heavier back then. But I get your point.

    So thats not a harp, thats the keyboard that sounds a bit like a hard i guess. Anyways, the biggest thing about this band is that they double a lot of their solos keys / guitar unison. Back in the days, its what made them famous in the metal community. This stuff was usually reserved for the prog metal. Children of bodom brought this element to the death metal scene, along with this very melodic keyboard over fast pace guitar riffs. To me, their first 4 albums are the best. I think there is a definitive change occurring in their sound after hatecrew deathroll. Great channel, nice reaction!

    Nothing compared to the old Cob, that Something Wild is a raw and brutal masterpiece of Neoclasical Death Metal. Progresiveliy they turned less chaotic and less neo and born the happie melodies of Cob, the comercial and easy, straight Cob. Still good, but no brillant.
