My father was the greatest drummer, producer and many other gifts... Miss him very much there will never be another stylee
Wow! Thank you for your comment here. You are right, your father was an amazingly talented person, the sounds he gave to the world set the standard for a lot of music we hear today. I never got the chance to meet him but I am grateful for the music he left us. May his honor live on through his music and you, his blood. God bless you
Your dad was the greatest tight drummer ever, along with Jaki Liebezeit. I taught myself to play drums listening to the two of them. Much thanks.
@@ticktester You had Carlton Barrett of The Wailers, Carlton Santa Davis who played with Peter Tosh and Sly Dunbar who were all great drummers too.
@@ticktester Also there is the drummer Leroy Horsemouth and Loyd Knibbs of the band the Skatelites who were also the greatest in Jamaican music too.
He is absolutely wonderful, and was the protagonist of the Rockers movie !!
cool
Big up Karigan, you’re a huge inspiration to many! Much love
@@DMKahn I am very happy to read it !!! hoping to meet you one day and maybe work together !!! thank you
@@KariganReggae You are a very good drummer Karigan. I have been watching your videos.
Style Scott was a legend on the drums together with Carlton Barrett of the Wailers, Santa Davis who played with Peter Tosh, Loyd Knibbs of the Skatelites and Sly Dunbar.
I Played With The ROOTS RADICS for three years and in all that time I never knew how the Sticks Man Got that certain sound, Thanks a bunch Bro. .AKKA.
I've got an hour+ interview I did with Stylee back in 1983 when he was on tour with the Itals. Never published- I just discovered the tape about a year ago and digitized it.
Man you gotta upload that!! Gonna sub to your channel.
YOu can't say that and not provide a link!!
Did you upload it???

Amzing video bro, so happy to find a video like this, you really perfected the sound, Im a guitarist and bass myself, but always facinated with reggae drums and how they achieve their sound, thank you so much for this, and please would love to see more videos soon, blessing brother!

I came across You on YT and I have to tell that You`re doing some of the best tutorials, and in "reggae world" it`s pure gold ! (trust me, I`m doing reggae for over than 20 years) Max respect and I hope, that You stay safe !
I appreciate the love brother! Thanks for your feedback and have a wonderful weekend
The best tutorial ever
Thanks brother!!
Great information
can you possibly do one with the sound of Carlton Barrett?
Thinking about it. That one is a bit of a secret. Lots of hours experimenting to get that sound!! Not sure I want to just give it away, I like the fact there’s some mystery to it
@@DMKahn Carlton Barrett had a different snare on almost every album. It was kinda thematic. Based on the sound of the snare you can tell which album of Bob Marley's the song you are listening to is on. Of course it takes a lot of time and listening to them to decipher
He mostly used a Ludwig Supraphonic. I’ve spoken to his son about this. But yes there are different snares used on different albums with different tunings and sometimes with snare wires and sometimes without
If you listen to the beginning of Rock the Casbah, it’s Toppers snare sound as well. Thank you soooooo much for making this video.
Good work man
🙏
Amazing video, Kahn. Loved it. Subbed!
Thanks brother
I wasn't so successful with my super-crappy wooden snare. yours sounds killer.
Wayne Mercer hit me up brother. We can work something out!
Awesome Man!
Please what earpiece is that?
1964 Ears, it's a discontinued model called V6 Stage
Man this is great. Style is one of my favorites and big influence on my drumming, along with horsemouth, Carly Barrett, etc. Thanks for sharing this vid!
He’s my favorite for sure. Carlys number 2, then Sly for me :) so many greats.
Really want to find out how to get that snare sound that Yellowman uses in his older songs. Like in natty sat up on a rock. That’s gotta be the best sounding snare.
This video is a great tool to getting that sound. The other technical aspect is to mike the bottom head .
keren banget !!! terima kasih sudah berbagi ilmu
A tasty snare sound, Sir. It will work a treat. In the mix, do your thing and tweak the reverb tail by ear to vibe with the tempo. Splendid stuff. 😊♥️😊
Thanks brother
No drum video is complete without temporarily misplacing a DRUM KEY. We appreciate it!
Lol!!
@@DMKahn Do you also have a video on the drummer who played for Peter Tosh's band?? His name is Carlton Santa Davis.
Thank you!
Nice! Bigup!
Great work DM Kahn, thanks for sharing.

Great video, learned a lot from that. Any chance of a similar video on Carlton Barrett's snare drum tuning?
Maybe in the future, haven’t decided if I want to share my findings
You totally nailed that radics sound !!!!!
Bless bro!!
Great video! What in ears are you using? :)

It’s time for me to start looking into reggae alot more
Big up! Just responded to your email
Can you please do Carlton Barrett’s set up?
Contemplating!!
Any advice on how to get a sweet and punchy side-stick sound for reggae roots?
Well it sounds best if you put the tip of the drum stick on the top of the snare, with your palm or even combination of fingers and palm muting the actually snare head. Experiment with moving your hand (and attached stick) around the snare drum, and strike the part of the stick that has the butt end of the stick on the rim of the snare. Depending on the amount your hand is dampening, and how far off the center your hand is, you can hear the sweet spot. Start by placing the tip of the stick right at the edge of the snare head, then strike the rim, and move your hand slowly closer to the center of the snare. You’ll find the sweet spot that way. Cheers
Hey Diego a huge part of getting the rim to cut depends on the tuning of the drum especially the bottom head and the snare bed tension. A good example is how Stewart Copelend and Carly from Bob Marley's band tuned their snares . They tune the bottom head quite high and the tension on the head on the snares is very tight . Carly sometimes throws the snare off which gives a little stronger cut but not as bright .John Bonham the few times he played the rimshot it doesn't cut that much . This is because his bottom snare wasn't tuned very high and the snare bed had very little tension , in other words they resonated a lot. Snare tuning for reggae has very little to no snare bed resonance. The brightness and cut of the rim depends on these factors .
I’ve got a Ludwig Acrolite. Guessing I can get some similar tones to the Supraphonic. Another great video! Thank you.
Definitely! Thats a great snare drum
When i was a kid i thought that high pitch snare drum in bob and the wailers sounded kind of annoying like it didnt suit the song. But now i love it lol you rarely hear carlys style of drum fills these days in reggae
man your talented i love roots radics and you nailed that snare, you probably already know but just in case you dont check out king tubbys meets roots radics dangerous dub album its crazy also i subbed and liked big up and stay blessed
Thank you for the comment, it means a great deal to me! I used to have that album on vinyl! So good. Thanks for tuning in brother!
What version of Mac O.S are you running there and what version of Logic? Any reasons? (I am running quite a few old set ups here myself and noticed the age of your dock )
I recently upgraded to a new Mac mini 2018. Running Mojave and the latest version of Logic.
Really cool !! Thinking about buying a Drum kit. Or elements of it ( I don't got much money at the moment 😂) is it smart to buy it in elements ? Or always buy the whole peace ?
And witch elements do I need to start out ? I really like the style of pachyman with the toms.
Start with a hi hat, then get a snare, then a shells pack with kick and toms. That’s what I did. Or if you can afford it, get a used kit. Don’t go cheap on the snare or cymbals. Buy quality , cry once haha
@@DMKahn hahaha Thanks for the tip !! im gona try to save some money. and hopfuly cry soon
Haven't even watched it yet, but you get a forward just for the topic!

Big up DM!! This Is Fire Big Up Style Scot
He’s the best no doubt.
@@DMKahn Don't forget Carlton Barrett of Bob Marley & The Wailers, Santa Davis of Peter Tosh's band and Sly Dunbar. These are all great reggae drummers too.
Those are the top 3 no question. I’ve gotten the privilege of seeing Santa play a few times. He’s amazing. Sly is probably the most famous reggae drummer, also amazing. My favourite is Style Scott! Not to take away from the others though 🔥
@@DMKahn My favorite reggae drummer of all time is Carlton Barrett of Bob Marley and The Wailers and I also like the guy who used to play for Lucky Dube too.

Are you only using the Midas Venice as interface?
Correct
And do you record your external gear tru the Midas? Are you sampling at 48? It sounds good, I have one and I felt motivated
Yeah, I don’t bother with 48, I just go with 44.1

I tune it up more than that to get the notes closer to each other
Yeah that’s cool. This is about as low as I’d go. It doesn’t allow for a lot of rebound on the head.
needs more wrath ! just kidding ,cheers!
spot on, now just drive the preamps hard for some harmonic distortion and that’s it

For Your Information, It’s Sly Dunbar Snare He Copied And The Sly Dunbar Drumming Styles He Adopted,,,,🏰🇺🇸🇯🇲 Mr. KeenObserVatioN 🇯🇲🇺🇸🏆
I could see that!
Style started off being influenced by Sly ,but he eventually created his own sound and style of playing . I'm sure if you heard both you would know who was who
The Sound of Roots Radics? Are you serious? Secret? Not even close I think…. have you ever watched Style Scott play carefully? Or listen any multitrack of Roots Radics? I don’t tent to burn you or something but you giving falls information and it surprise me how many people on this UA-cam agree with you…
Style Scott and the Roots Radics,
1.The way Style hits the snare (he hits that thing to Tokyo). When you
(Khan) hit that snare its like a soft ploff (No power) if you want Style or Sly sound you have to think like them (sit in the same position play the same way) and the sound of the drums is not only the snare but also the bleeding from the other mics. and play with Power.
Many people from that time (Trevor Elliot, Earl Cunningham, Andy Bassford) said to me when Style Scott played the drums the earth shocked. It was like lightning and thunder as loud he played, he almost killed his drums kit
2. the second of all life play and not from a computer. The Radics played almost everyday 12 hours long.
3. Channel One and Jamaican engineers. (Solgie, Barnabas, Maxie) API, the speakers they use the pre-mix the AMPEX tape machine… keep in mind Channel one sound evolved in years from 1972 to 1980/1981/1982
4. The one who is really really close to Radics in my opinion is West Finga (from France) because he plays like Style as you can see on his video’s.
Anyway, good luck with your work and I wish you all the best and Keep reggae alive.
Hey brother, my intent isn’t to be perfect, or to sound exactly like Style. Nobody can sound exactly like someone else. Yes, the way this snare is muffled and how it is processed is absolutely a secret. I give away what I’ve learned from trial and error...for free might I add. This is my interpretation which has helped many people get in the ball park. I agree that I need to hit it harder, but unfortunately where I live I couldn’t be that loud at the time of shooting this video. Thanks for the constructive comment about the loudness, I do appreciate it and will keep this comment live because I like when people actually offer some advice instead of just “hating”.
@@DMKahn I guess my reaction was alittle harsh...... no bad intention's here, i'm glad that there are still people that care for Rub A Dub !!!!
No problem man, I honestly appreciate people like you who love the music and care enough to comment. You clearly know a lot about the Radics and it’s OK to feel like I may have given false informations. I did my best based on my own trial and error. I’m soon going to be doing a remake of Big Ship and kind of show the drum tuning/muting/techniques I’ve picked up but I’m going to start off with a big disclaimer that this is my best attempt at recreating the sound, in order to encourage others to make this kind of awesome music. That’s the end goal! I think the Radics and Scientist combination is the pinnacle of the best reggae music ever played. All is well my friend, thanks for commenting!!
@@joukeyspeerdHow does Westfinga play like Style when I don't see him playing drums in any videos . I see him mixing . What are you talking about?
