  • Kahn discusses how to use his own samples to create a realistic sounding one drop drum beat.
    Topics discussed:
    1. Swing vs Straight
    2. Multiple sample velocity and varying samples
    3. The "reggae roll" shown in the piano roll
    4. Adding variation
    5. Adding drum fills/rolls
    6. And a little bit of dub because, why not?

have to disagree its not really a tutorial.... its just showing what he did, not how to achieve it for yourself (unless you already have the knowledge of building the drum track....) a good turorial would start with an empty track and show you the process so def not the best on you tube by a long shot

If I can ask: I'm still learning to use a DAW. Reggae interests me so I watch your videos with great interest. I'm playing around with "swing" in the DAW and have an understanding of what it does.
But it's not clear from your video whether it's only necessary to add the "swing" value to things like the hi hats. I don't see the reason to add it to the kick drum on a basic one drop... why or how would it "swing" the kick and snare?
Do we just add the swing to the bits that matter, and leave the rest of the percussion alone? If or if not, would you be kind enough to explain?

Wish you can help. I am trying to create a song in BandLab, but it's not sounding good.
Maybe it's my lack of skills but I wonder if your skills can make it sound good.
My grand kids waiting for me to finish the song.
