As a student of music technology in 2016, I felt so alone in the world of reggae production. I had to cobble together a process by myself, people thought I was weird, and I still don't know many others who do the same. To return to what is now my hobby and see videos like this up, brings joy to my heart. Thank you. It's great to see others making reggae 'in the box'. I was advised against it. But it's still reggae. It sounds like reggae, it bounces like reggae, it skanks like reggae. It's reggae.

Man your words hit me hard! For years I've just wanted to join a roots reggae band and just really try and do originals and covers and no one around my area or even further did or felt reggae the way I feel it, and because of that I learnt pretty much all instruments found in a reggae chune and went to study music production to form my own path. Also worked so hard to pay for and afford all the equipment for a steady running studio.... so far so good.... anything is possible.

#2 If folks want a good organ keyboard, I highly recommend the Yamaha Reface YC. It's small and light, almost looks like a toy, but it packs a wallop. It's got a wonderful Leslie-esque sound with amazing panning, and with just one drawbar down it makes an excellent bubble. I mainly use it for the B3 sound but it's also got a Vox, Farfisa, and a couple other combo organ sounds. I'm spoiled on organ sounds now! You can see me playing it on a few videos on my channel. It even has onboard speakers that are great for small intimate environments.
#3 I can't stress enough the difference between MIDI guitar and a real one. I borrowed a bandmate's extra electric recently and have been practicing and recording with it, and there's just no comparison. All the little idiosyncrasies about playing a fretted and electric instrument create the distinctive sound. Your video about recording rhythm guitar parts really helped with that too.

I would add that a lack of any of the so-called 'must have' items be they monitors, vsts or real instruments should not be a barrier to creating your Reggae. Limitations of this sort do not mean you can't make good music. Look at Perry's early Ark set-up or some of the early digital riddims done with bare bones keyboards. Creativity and imagination are the keys not equipment.
I agree with your statement wholeheartedly. The reason I brought up monitors and listening environment is priorities. I’m talking about low hanging fruit to get better sounding music quickly. I think it goes without saying that creativity is more important than listening, but it’s a mistake I’ve personally made so I thought I’d share my experience regarding listening environment. And yes I love your point about “using what you have” as the early Jamaican music was amazing and was recorded and mixed on lower quality and fidelity gear. The content and song is number one (ie creavity and imagination)...but prioritizing your purchases of gear (because let’s face it, gear is a necessary part of creation) is also important. Yes Khan, I believe that you already are a musician, and as said before you have great ears. Wish I had your ears. Music has time signature. Common time is four beats to the bar. Because most Jamaicans do not read music, we do not 'understand' what that means in relation to our music. Therefore others tell us about our music and we are unable to tell whether the information is correct or not, worst part is that it is a simple matter but we get it wrong. When music is in common time the natural back beat is two and four, not three and definitely not one. You may put it there if you want but it won't be natural. Most Reggae is in common time, some is in cut time or two four time. When it is in two four time where are you going to put the one drop? How do you count the one drop in there? There is no third beat. If we had to write the music for others to read, that has to be considered. Suppose it was an all Reggae movie score and strings etc had to be written in? Once a book is written, (and they have been written), if the root of the book is wrong, the whole book is wrong. It is easy to prove, ten seconds.

I would agree on the guitar and bass, except after you made this one, EzBass came out and if you do it properly, it sounds awesome. Used in a few ska-tunes, mindblowing!
Waves Bass Fingers is great too, but nothing compares to a real bass player. As with other instruments, its not so much about the actual sound of single notes, but about the authentic playing and articulation, which is hardly achievable in virtual.

Geek reply here 🤓: in fact if you improve 1% each day, it will only take you 131 days to get to 365% improvement (364.568038616326% to be more exact), because once you improve 1% the second day, then on the third day you are improving based on second day (accumulated knowledge), not the first. If you were to go all the way down to 365 days you would have improved 3740% (or 3740.93409236508% to be more exact).

When it comes to monitoring, there´s a huge mistake many people make. Sure, you may have decent monitor speakers and headphones but you just don´t mix using only the best gear because most people don´t have high end equipment at home. That´s why you should also use cheap headphones, wireless earbuds or maybe listen to the song in your car or something. It has to sound decent even on the devices most people have at home not only on your perfectly neutral monitor speakers.
You should do a guitar skank/chops sample pack..of Chickas and guitar polyrythms...

@@DMKahn i will surely buy it. we have good reggae drums, percussions, piano etc. but guitar chops is non existent , at least not authentic reggae chops. this is an untouched market.

Is it possible to achieve a decent mix if you don't have the best headphones or monitors? I'd love to invest in either/or but kinda on a budget yet still striving for a good sound as I cant just quit recording without losing my gourd.lol
Yes you can. Budget monitors or decent headphones are fine. I use relatively inexpensive monitors - Yamaha HS8s. I think what’s even more important is treatment for your room. If you really need headphones I’d check out the Slate VSXs

I use a lot. Some standouts are the Lindell 80, and Little Radiator

@@DMKahn Good to hear Khan. Learn it properly first before you teach what is not correct. Many all over you tube are doing so, and they are actually good teachers. My own students see them and get angry asking me to put lessons on, I am not interested, so they put theirs up. Of course they get a walloping from me, even though they play well. Not everyone who plays well teaches well, or even understands what they are teaching. I think you are a great person and have great ears. Blessings on your album and your endeavors. I just can't hear the difference with compression on and off, same with limiter. Maybe it will come in the future or maybe it's just not my side of playing i feel it so boring for too few gain in the music global quality i prefer to work on musical theory and arrangement.
It’s a totally different thing than working on the music, and I totally get why it could get boring, it’s the technical side of mixing, which in today’s age is super important to learn and “learn how to listen” that is - unless you want to spend money for someone else to mix your tracks, which is totally fine too. Thx for sharing. I also have not watched it yet and do not want to offend anyone, though why are so freaking many ppl setting up their Yamaha HS like they are not supposed to? (even Yamaha says that the sound is suffering when set up like that and that they are not built like the NS).

It’s all good. The only reason mine are sideways is because my desk is very high. If I set them up vertically they would be a lot higher. I’m planning on lowering my desk and making them vertical. For me I tested the difference and having them sideways doesn’t seem to mess up the stereo image like people say it does. It’s the less of two evils in my specific scenario unfortunately.
