    Great video and many thanks for sharing your knowledge. Here's one that i'm having trouble with though. When using three horns together for an intro or chorus riff, how are they layered? Does the trumpet play the root with the sax and trombone playing third and fifth? I want to get close to an authentic sounding horn section but it often sounds bad. Any chance of a vid to explain it?

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  5 років тому +3

      Phil Buckthorpe thanks for the question! I have played around with this a lot. The issue is that horns generally sound unrealistic. It’s very hard to get good horn sounds. My best attempts have been with a trombone playing the root, a trumpet playing the third and another trumpet playing the fifth of the melody. Altos just sound too fake although they would be the actual horn used in the trio. There are no rules though, sometimes I’ve used the trombone as the third or fifth. I would say make copies of the midi notes and move them around until you get the best combination. You may need to play with octaves as trombones are obviously lower by nature. Something cool to try is on a song with 7ths, try using four horns, one on the 7th harmony. Can be fun. I’d love to do a video but honestly it’s still a struggle to get good horns. Experimentation is the key! Cheers and thanks for stopping by

    • @philbuckthorpe2561
      @philbuckthorpe2561 5 років тому +1

      @@DMKahn Many thanks for that, much appreciated. I've watched countless reggae gigs on youtube trying to figure out what the brass is doing but its hard to tell them apart and like you say, convincing horn patches are hard to come by. I will have a go with what you suggested here, it'll be fun to experiment. Keep up the good work, I'm inspired by the reggae you are creating. Peace.

    reggae keyboard skank, strum or bang got so much different techniques, swing notes, riddim groove that can alter the bang sound making multiply fascinating groove. bubbling also has so many techniques and sounds. enjoy and rock out everyone! peace and love from URIJAH BAND from the Caribbean. My advice is a lot of musicians all do the same sounds they hear from reggae or dancehall music that was invented by our legends. All thanks, respect and love to them since we have copied them or a more polite word followed or immolated them which is cool. Once you learn those foundation sounds, he's doing on this channel, take it to the next level and be creative and inventive. Greatness comes from being original and inventive, REMEMBER THIS, One love to all.

    How to do the piano rhythm when the guitars are playing the pattern already? I saw Reggae bands where 2 guitars and piano are playing the same rhythm. Sound monotonous. Even the swinging of the arms as they strum the guitar is the same as the piano player.

    • @DMKahn
      @DMKahn  Рік тому

      I’m not sure if you know this, but the signature sound you hear in a lot of reggae is the sound of the piano and the guitar playing at the same time. It’s literally part of what makes reggae reggae. It’s the combination of two simple things to make a complex sound. You say monotonous, I say magical 😏
