  • Subaru Legacy 2011. Check engine, BRAKE, Cruise, Traction control lights came on. In the first part of the video I explained that it was the gas cap even though the error lights were still on the IC. I saw the gasket was weird and decided to make the video as if that was the problem knowing full well that if It turned out to be something else I would not post the video. Turns out I think that was the problem. If this happens to you the gas cap should be your first check but it could be lots of other causes for these lights to come on. Autozone told me aftermarket gas caps tend to not last long so OEM replacement would be better.

If the lights come back on it may be the map sensor. Check your obd. It's easy to replace.

Can confirm, this works. Check you gas cap, mine had a brown sealer eing and had grey abrasion marks. Got a new one, let the car sit while unplugged from the battery off and it's back to normal.

Happened to me two weeks ago. Brought car to my mechanic, who performed computer analysis. He recommended that I bring to dealer because computer code read indicated something to do with harness. Well, after seeing this video I decided what the heck try the gas cap remedy. It worked!!! I immediately took the vehicle, 2012 Outback 2.5I, for a 50 mile drive, ran A/C/ heater, radio, lights, everything electrical. No red lights, no blinking. Picked daughter up at college, 400 mile round trip. No issues..thanks for this video.

It is very sad that people have to go through this again and again for a malfunction problem that should have had a recall long time ago. Do they know how upsetting this is? Do they know how much anxiety this creates?
This problem happens in Subaru Legacy, Subaru Tribeca, Subaru Forester. It must be a problem that should and must be fixed through a recall. They Subaru company should find a solution to this and fix this once and for all for all customers who are affected by it.

You're saying a gas cap should outlast the car? It's a silicone gasket in a plastic housing. They don't last forever. It's like expecting your shoes to last a lifetime. Everything has wear and tear.
How do I put this into words you can understand? Your shoelaces are wearing out on your 10 year old shoes. Should the company recall them? No!
This happens on every car when the gas cap isn't sealing. Sometimes, it's the user not tightening the cap! Every smog technician knows this. Or anybody who failed the test due to the gas cap.
If you don't tighten the cap or check it for damage... That's your own fault. Don't blame it on the company. Especially when you don't even maintain your old car! No need to lie. 99% of car owners don't even change their transmission fluids. Expecting it to last 25 years. Or even know it needs to be changed every few years.
You and all the people who liked your comment are the same. Don't know and don't care. Only doing an oil change. Neglecting rotors, brake pads, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, brake and clutch cylinders, suspension, mounts, gaskets, cv boots, axles, etc.
Neglecting your car. Then wondering why it fails on you one day. Learn how to take care of your stuff. It's not hard.

Thanks for this video. I drive a 2021 Forester, and had all of the warning lights come on 10 minutes into my morning commute. Long story short, after watching your vid, I took the gas cap off, looked it over and put it back on tight. Started it, and it returned to normal. Probably the first thing that should be checked on most vehicles when you get a "check engine" light.

Thanks for the info, unlike yours my seal on the gas capl was not jacked up but the cap seal did have some corrosion build up on it. I took some rubbing alcohol and a towel and cleaned seal and it's mating surface till both where clean. unhooked the battery for 10 minutes or so and hooked it back up, several days and a hundred miles or so and no freaky stuff happening. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction !

Thanks so much for this video. I have a 2012 Forester and the exact same thing happened to me yesterday. I filled up the day before and when I drove the car yesterday the check engine/traction/cruise lights all came on. I'll go get a new gas cap today and give it a shot. I should mention that there are a couple online Subaru owner forums that have threads with hundreds of comments about this same problem. Many owners have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars to get their cars repaired, only to see the problem reoccur. It's apparently a long-standing defect with Subarus, although I'm sure it happens with other makes as well.

    • @SS-gx7tg

Exactly. And each time it happens (for me at least) even once I fix it, the lights never go off. I took it to my Subaru dealership and they said it takes TEN full trip cycles to shut off the lights after a gas cap mishap, which involves something like 10 trips of at least 50 miles or more. WTF?! Thankfully Subaru dealerships has some device that can turn off the lights immediately (which they were happy to do for me) but it still seems like such a pain in the neck. I live in a state (Oregon) where you can't fill your own gas, and so many times the gas attendant will not screw the cap on properly, and then the next morning when I start my car all the warning lights illuminnate and I have to take time out of my day to go to Subaru and get the lights turned off. So unbelievably annoying

The same three warning lights appeared on my 2005 outback last year just after clearing the brow of a particular gentle hill near my home (Cumbria in the UK). The three lights remained on until I stopped and restarted the engine. Strangely, the same thing happened the next day on the same hill. So I visited my local garage. Their computer showed a fault with emissions/flow with my CAT. They cleared the code. A few days later on the same hill the same three lights appeared.
So I googled the issue. Some folk stated best to change the fuel filler cap. I had noticed recently that my fuel filler cap was not as tight as I'd liked. I also thought it strange as the mechanics computer did not find any error with fuel pressure etc. Anyway, I ordered a new cap. Unfortunately the cap itself was cheap and substandard. So I just swapped the rubber seal but used the same cap. I noticed the old seal I took off was rock hard, had no give. Apparently fuel vapour will harden rubber etc. I then took my car to the garage as the warning lights still showing. They cleared the fault (same error code for the CAT). I had good driving for the next few weeks. I then filled up with fuel at the station, but because I was in a hurry, I never fully closed the filler cap ( making it click click click etc). I went on the same hill and guess what, the three lights re-appeared. I pulled over to check my fuel filler cap and found I hadn't fully sealed it. ( And I had to kick myself for being lazy) I went back to the garage who cleared the error code. For the rest of 2018, not a problem again. I have done some research since and found this issue with the corroded/ hardened fuel filler cap affects lots of other make/models of cars also.
so best advice (and cheapest) replace the seal on the fuel filler cap. It will also stop slow vapour seepage and hopefully save fuel bills a little. Remember though, the three lights may not clear by themselves even after replacing the seal. A mechanic/ computer will need to clear them. Happy motoring Subaru fans

You don’t have to go to a shop to reset the ECM (Engine Control Module). Just unhook the negative battery cable for about 2-3 minutes.
Another fix if the gas cap don’t work. Replace The brake switch on the top of the foot brake. If your cruise control light, And Brake light is flashing it will cause the check engine light to stay on all at once. Your cruise control will not work when this is happening. The brake switch tells the cruise control to kick off when you brake. When the brake switch goes bad this is a safety override so your cruise control will not get stuck on as you try and brake.
For some dumb reason if Subaru plugs the car into the computer it will give you a code to replace the catalytic converter ($2000).. Subaru can’t explain this. But this trick is from a Subaru Tech. Replace the fuel cap $10 dollars. If this don’t fix the lights then try the brake switch $46 dollars. A lot of people has spent $2000 for a new Cat and the lights will still come on after about 15-20 miles and you can fix the light problem for $56 bucks. I did both fuel cap & brake switch on our 2014 Legacy myself ($56 bucks)just to be sure, took me 15 minutes. Be sure and buy a Subaru brand brake switch, they are better than Auto Zone stuff. And remember to unhook the negative battery cable for 2-3 minutes to reset the ECM.
      I hope this helps someone…

@@riverrat4631 thanks.... Some good advice there.
I went and bought a Bluetooth obd2 reader for £5 on ebay. I haven't so far had the same code pop up as previously (CAT). However, last year just before the cars annual MOT test, my lambda exhaust sensor started playing up, forcing the same three lights on the dash. The sensor was changed successfully.
Going back to the fuel filler cap seal, I haven't had a problem again, but apparently the extra ethanol (from 5 to 10% in UK fuels) can cause such rubber seals to become hard. So I shall need to monitor that.

    • @riverrat4631
      @riverrat4631 2 роки тому

@@stevieb777 Sometimes it will throw a transmission code when these 3 lights come on. Brake, cruise and engine light. But sometimes the traction control light comes on. This is when it shows a transmission code. But 99% of the time a gas cap and a brake light switch will fix the light problem. There is nothing really wrong with the car. It’s not unsafe to drive. But having cruise to work is important. I took my 2014 Legacy to the dealer and the plugged it in and said it needs a $2000 cat. I called a friend that was a Subaru Tech for years. He said replace the cap and brake switch and unhook the battery for 2-3 minutes. That was over a thousand miles ago. Car runs amazing without any lights and I still have my $2000 dollars…lol. He said some dealers used this for years to make extra money for the service department. Some Techs really didn’t know, they only do what the computer tells them. But he figured out if the only thing not working was the cruise control there had to be a reason. The Brake light made him realize the brake switch is part of the cruise control circuit. A bad brake switch could keep the cruise from working.
He could never figure out why it showed a Cat or Transmission code. Unless it was designed to sell expensive parts?? Makes you wonder right? He replaced many Cats and transmissions and still had light issues. The dealership was not happy he figured out a $56 dollar hack. May be why he don’t work there anymore??

@@riverrat4631 yes, I agree. My local garage too stated too that the error code ( i cannot remember the actual number/code) pointed to a faulty cat.
Thats when I wasn't convinced so did some research. I could only find soe relevant fixes on American websites including your post. But I also noticed other makes of car flagged the same three lights when fuel filler cap seals had hardened. At the time my subaru garage never confirmed /denied ever seeing such a fix for said error code.
The car (3.0L automatic outback) does drive slightly different without traction control on, but I really needed traction to work as winter /ice was approaching. I have had both manual and auto outbacks before, but the auto excels in the winter. It seems to hold better and not let me make mistakes, whereas I have spun a manual a few times on ice/ snow. Also, having the cruise control on long motorway journeys was missed. So Im glad you highlighted a simple fix.
Im still enjoying my 2005 3.0L outback. Im not sure what my next car will be. Thinking about an XV (crossover), but may stick to an outback ( possibly a 2015 auto). Other makes just dont interest me anymore

i think it bears a re-mention that disconnecting the battery deletes all the info your vehicle has stored, and it takes many miles to reset. if you are planning to perhaps NOT pollute the earth and all of its living things, and need to get your car inspected, doing the battery trick will cause it to fail. now, most of you out there can go and drive 400 miles just for fun, but i live on an ISLAND, JUST bought my latest Subie 5 days ago, and am now dealing with this. so, i cannot take it to a dealer ASAP (i have to take the ferry..and that requires reservations which get scarce this time of year, plus, it's not cheap.), if i reset the codes using an actual code reader or battery disconnect, it will take me about a year to get over 100 miles so there is something the emissions test can read, and there is exactly ONE road that you can actually go 50 MPH/hr (recommended reset speed) on. if you think mechanics are expensive where you live, you honestly have no idea. times it by a bajillion and you might come close. however, as a shark and ocean conservationist (=broke) here, i can't possibly NOT do an emissions test! (that my car is one year away from not needing..dammit!!) i wish screwing on a gas cap and doing a fake reset that will most likely come back to haunt you at some point, was the answer to EVERY problem. *sigh* alas..i must away..

I had all these on because it was freezing yesterday and the temperature was 25 below Fahrenheit as driving in slushy snow and all the sudden the cruise went on the break went on the traction like you said the traction but mine went on and the check engine light went on and are still on today and now it’s warming up yes so I’m going to get gas in a few up tighten things down appreciate this information

Thank you!!!! I think that you just saved me several hundred dollars. I didn't even need to replace the gas cap-just tighten it. You would think that Subaru would devise a better way to alert drivers that the gas cap is ajar. Wonder how many people have wasted time and money getting towed when they saw their panels light up like an early Christmas????

Reason they don't make cars "SMARTER" is dealer income would be cut in half from all the unnecessary work they get to perform. Dealers know exactly what is going on. Foreign car dealers are better then American car dealers about screwing you while sounding sincere and with a smile on their faces. Unfortunately for me, my local Subaru dealer is also a GM dealer and used to be a jeep dealer. This guy is the lowest form of slime on planet earth.
My experience was from buying a brand new 1998 Jeep Cherokee, still in my drive way and runs perfect, I fixed all my problems with it by stopping taking it in to the dealership. Every time I did, it took 2 or 3 trips all with loaner vehicle and every time it finally got fixed... PRESTO... a brand new problem cropped up the next day after I got it home.
These bastards were milking JEEP for warranty fix cash then sabotaging my Jeep so I would have to bring it in again to repeat the entire process, last round was suddenly the next day I brought it home my air conditioner stopped cooling, took it in, first trip, new compressor, still not working, they said bring it in again, I decided to take it to a small local shop, he checks it and tells me, there is no Freon in your system, I had him vacuum it and fill with Freon and never went back to Mr, slimeball steel-er-ship so they could sabotage something else. It has been 18 yrs - ZERO problems, and it still runs perfect. Jeep = Great vehicle, GM = BAD dealers with ZERO code of ethics except to lie and steal from you.
American car dealerships are EVIL BASTARDS with only one goal, to screw you out of as much of your hard earned cash as you will tolerate.
Bought my wife a 2011 Subaru legacy 3.6R. Wonderful car, bought it 200 miles away from a west side wa dealer due to my local dealer being a slime ball because he is also a GM dealer.
I'm here trouble shooting check engine light and codes. Fixed the CEL and fixed the flashing brake light by tightening the gas cap. Probably will go buy a new gas cap as I can see the seal looks kinda flat so it is harder for it to seal, I'll order it online. I could probably find a FAT o-ring the right size for a few bucks but I'll just buy a new OEM gas cap and call it good.

    • @Bendc1970A1

There are so many things that can cause all these lights to come on like this. I've heard that Subaru makes all these lights come on because some people are ignoring the "check engine" light. This video is just outlining the first and easiest thing for a person to check without a scan tool. If this turns out to be the problem a lot of money can be saved versus taking it to the dealer for something so simple. If this does not work then I recommend getting car scanned or buy a $35 obd2 scanner because there are still a lot of things that are simple to fix if you can just get pointed in the right direction.
