I think his voice is probably shot from performing so many concerts for over 30 years now. This happens to quite a few musicians

He absolutely doesn’t give a fuck what he sounds like and that’s the beauty of The Flaming Lips, they are overlooked and under appreciated and yet still have created the most creative and explorative psychedelic rock music of the modern era.
