Active multi controller was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for this info! I knew what I wanted to accomplish I just didn't know the right setting. Super helpful!
Thanks so much - as a 5d Mk IV user, i was so used to just moving the focal point with my thumb - i nearly screwed up a shoot by thinking i could just pick up the R5 and switch off the facial AF - and to my horror found that the AF point wouldn't move! I nearly cried. So grateful for this. The least I can do is 'subscribe and like'.
Thanks for this! Just got my R5 a couple of days ago and the two-step process for moving the focus point was driving me crazy! I customized the multi-controller and am a happy camper now.
Thank you so much for this video. It answered the question I've been unable to answer on how to make the joystick control the focus point without going into the menus... thank you thank you thank you!
Very helpful! Went from a 5D Mark IV to an R5 under the impression that it would be a seamless transition. Controlling the focus points was my biggest sticking point and your videos have helped me tremendously. #NewSubscriber
Good ng through every single video lecture in this Playlist 💚 Huge help thank you so much for putting in all this work into providing essentially a full guide with tips!
The touch/Drag focus feature is THE (!!) reason I love my R5, makes focussing on events and everything sooo much faster and much more fun. On my older R it is slow and laggy but on R5 it is much faster and more direct. I use left eye through viewfinder and left thumb on whole screen and it works perfect in any situation.
What''s up Jason, I am hoping you're the person who can help me as I am stumped. You have the most knowledge of the R5 of anyone on UA-cam. Canon R5 related question.I am a photographer who has also started doing video. I understand the Canon R5's video settings very well but there is one thing I cannot figure out. When I have 2 memory cards (SD Card and CF Express Card) in the camera I understand it will not dual record video. What do I do to make it so the video records specifically to just my CF Express Card? Currently it wants to record video to just my SD Card when I have both cards in camera. Any help would be appreciated. Some may say "well just put the CF Express Card in by itself and record video that way", however when on a photo assignment I find it important to dual record photos and occasionally I switch from photo mode to video mode while on assignment. Thanks Jason.
So first, you can record video to both cards (just as you can record photos) though not for raw video and the higher bit rate stuff like 8K ALL-I, 4K 100/120 FPS, 4K ALL-I HEVC (clog, hdrpq), and 4K 50/60 ALL-I in H.264 (non-CLOG or HDR PQ). Those formats can only be recorded to the CF Express card. In any event, the settings you're looking for are found in the "Recrod func+card/folder sel." entry at the top of the Set Up1 menu. If you set the "Photo/movie separate" option to enable, the camera will only store movies on the CFExpress card, and photos on the SD card. If either card is missing, the camera will not save the files associated with that format. The same is true if either card is full. If the "Photo/movie separate" setting is set to disabled, then you have control over how and where the camera saves each file type. The next two options down on that menu "Photo rec options" and "move rec options" let you change whether the camera records to the selected card and stops when the card is full (standard), does the same as standard but switches cards when the card is full (auto), records specific formats to specific cards (e.g. for raw+jpeg) (rec. separately), or records duplicates to both cards (Rec. to multiple). The settings for video are similar, though the rec separately sends raw to the CFExpress card and MP4s to the SD card. Finally, the next two options "Photo record/play" and "movie record/play" tell the camera which card should be used for those formats. That is, to record movies to the CFE or SD card and so on. You will need to have both cards in the camera when you go to set this up to change those. The priority setting (info button) in this menu, will allow the camera to switch cards if one is full or missing, but will switch back when the preferred card is available. Hope that helps.
@@PointsInFocus Thank you Jason. You helped me out. What I was doing wrong was I had the "Video Record/play" set to card 2. This is why I wasn't able to record 4KU or 8K video when both cards where in camera. It is working now. My settings in "wrench icon" - Record func+card/folder sel. are: Photo/Video seprate: Disable Photo Rec options: Rec. to multiple Video Rec options: Standard Photo Play - Card 1 Video Record/play: Card 1 Folder: 100Canon Thank you again. You helped me figure this complex menu out. I appreciate it. Now I can photograph still on both memory cards then when I switch to video record up to the full 8K Video on just my CF Express Card (Which is the card I download onto my computer over the SD Card). I am going to make a video on this topic and credit you as well. I will return here and update this thread with the link to my video.
To be clear, in case I wasn't in the video, the touch and drag settings (and touch and drag AF as a whole) only effect when you're eye is to the EVF. When the LCD is used, touching the LCD will cause the AF point to move to where you touched and there's no way to stop that. That said, I haven't seen or heard of an EOS R series camera that ignores the touch and drag settings.
If you've set the multi-controller to direct AF point selection, then you can just push in on it (straight in like a button) and it'll recenter the AF point.
do i have to activate multi controller in video section of R5C. just got mine haven't even figured out the video section of it . took some time to understand the photo section coming from 5dmarkiii 60D
If you want to use it to directly move the AF point without going in to the AF point selection screen, then yes. You find the setting in the customize buttons menu (on the custom function 3 page), the multi-controller is the last entry at the bottom. The left column is your photo mode setting, the right column is the video mode setting. I set both of these to direct AF point selection on my cameras.
Back in the EOS 5D Mark IV days, I did all my hdr's in old school fashion by imaging a bracketed RAW set and then combining them using Photoshop's Merge to HDR plug in. I did not feel the Mark IV's dedicated HDR routine gave me enough choices and ability to expand dynamic range optimally. Now I've got an R5 and it's more powerful but there's one issue that I haven't been able to evaluate. The Canon solution cannot work with RAW images, the hdr's that it generates are always jpgs. But wouldn't that impact image quality because of compression. Which method should work best and why?
I use exposure bracketing and stacking in post for all my HDRs. That produces the best image quality. Moreover, if you're already use to doing it that way, there's no gain in changing to the current in camera HDR techniques. However, there are people who aren't interested in doing a lot of post production work for one reason or another. And in my experience this doesn't just apply to novices either. For those users, the built in HDR process, even though it generates a JPEG, gets them most of the results, without the work in post. Ultimatley, what matters is that the image resonates emotionally with the audience. Optimizing image quality won't save a picture that doesn't do that. More importantly, it takes a lot of quality issues to really ruin a resonant image to the point of it being a problem.
@@PointsInFocus Jason, I have spent hours trying to get my new R5 going and I am blocked by not understand how to evoke the shooting modes under Fv. There must be some button/dial combination that causes a display of Fv (or the other modes) and I just can't find it. If I can't find it, I can't adjust and set it. Another maddening issue is that as I try to work on the former issue, the rear screen rapidly jumps to a very low light state such that I can't see the icons. To quote the Temps, "Ain't too proud to beg".
Eco mode is most likely responsible for the screen's rapid dimming. Menu -> Setup 3 (yellow wrench) -> Echo mode (at the bottom) set it to off. As for your first problem/question. Are you trying to change out of Fv into one of the other exposure modes (e.g. manual, Av/Tv/etc.)? If so you hit the mode button in the middle of the dial on the top of the camera, and that brings up a list of the shooting modes. If that's not working you need to make sure that the Mode button's function hasn't been changed in the button customization menu. C.Fn 3 menu page -> Customize Buttons -> Mode should be set to MODE and not something else (you want that set in both columns for photo and video).
@@PointsInFocus I am so close. The Eco mode solved problem #1. For #2, I've been able to create Mode-Mode on the video side but not on the photo. When I try to select the photo box, it shows a key and the notice "protect". So in that instance pressing the mode button at the top does nothing. You are so kind to help me with this. The problem is that I'm off to monument valley with a photo group tomorrow morning and I'm rather desperate to not arrive unarmed. The crazy thing (among several) is that I reset the camera before embarking on this difficult road. It seems to have gotten scrambled although I don't know how.
In the menu where you're setting the button function, keep scrolling up (either use the dial on the back of the camera or the multi-controller). Protect is the first item on the second to last row of settings. Mode is the first item in the row.
why am I unable to cursor through the auto focus options? I chose eye tracking people;however, before I was able to cursor through the auto focus options with the info button. now I can't
As far as I know, the info button never switched AF methods. In the default configuration the M-Fn button does that, and the only other option is change that to the main command dial. The info button will switch between eye-af when the in the AF point selection menu and face + tracking is currently selected.

I've just watched 4 or 5 videos from famous vloggers but found the joystick info I want here.

Those are Peak Design's Anchor Links, they're a quick release system for camera straps.
Dude, increase the sensitivity of the AF point. Moves around much better.
I've tried that, but I've had trouble controlling the point accurately. I may have to give it a try again though and see if I can get use to it.
