    12 years later and I bought a used GA pre73. First listen for voice overs is. WOW 🤩 you can actually hear the difference, and recognise that’s that professional sound you hear but don’t quite get with a mixer pre. The colour is excellent, love it. First pre I’ve had, and very glad I got one already.

    I had this for about 4-5 years and I kept getting the same comments. "Nice recording", "What did you put on your chain" , "How did you get that sound" ? I'm sure there are others out there but this is a keeper. More bang for your buck. I used a AKG C414 BXL and a Blue mic Blue bird. GREAT SOUND!!!

    I appreciate your message regarding built in preamps however I have to disagree. A good mic pre does make a big difference especially when you are stacking tracks. I have the pre-73 mkiii and its one of my favourite pres.

    • @nothisworld
      @nothisworld 7 років тому

      I own an audio interface with built-in preamps and I keep hearing both messages back and forth. On the one hand I keep being told that I'm good to go with my interface built-in preamps, on the other and as often i hear that standalone preamps really make that sought-after difference.

    • @grumpyoldmanracing
      @grumpyoldmanracing 7 років тому +1

      One thing that is always true is that the biggest improvement is always made at the source. Better tone, Mics, placement etc. after that the quality of the pre will make a difference. The difference in sound is subtle but it is there. A pre from an interface and an API will both be clean and clear but the difference is in the way tracks glue together. Tracks on a quality pre require less mixing and effort. Graham seems like a nice guy but he is a knowledgeable enthusiast not a professional.

    • @nothisworld
      @nothisworld 7 років тому

      So you're an advocate for the standalone preamp. I am going that way anyway. Will buy this Golden Age Project Pre-73 and hook it up to an Eleven Rack. Hopefully they'll get along well.

      I think it's a matter of perspective. I use an Audient interface and they have some fantastic class A preamps built in. The sound quality is very clear and true, it's the same pres used in their $20k mixing consoles. Other interfaces in this price range and up are also very very good. The difference is if you want some coloration and how much coloration do you want? I think Graham is really just trying to push this idea that you don't need expensive and exotic equipment to make a pro quality fantastic mix, and you really don't. Sure I wouldn't mind having a Neve if I can one day afford to pick one up in the meantime I might pick up a GAP but once you have a high quality interface then it's really a subjective decision of what kind of sound you want.

    • @shanesean7006

      yes i agree but he is pushing this concept too much.

    Thanks very much. I really appreciate your clarity around how you use this (i.e., the signal path/chain, the fact that you plug it in to the line input of your audio interface, and so on).
    I also like the review - it would have been nice to have had a longer, 'live' audio sample during which you switch the Pre73 in and out.
    Thanks, once again,

    @Myreverlation This is a software (or M-audio) related issue. You don't need another preamp, you just need to figure out how to setup your headphone mixes with your system.

  • @BobCorey

    Is the 73 junior the same soundwise lacking the extra features?

  • @ProToolsEducation
    @ProToolsEducation 11 років тому

    Well you could do this, In the Mbox mini the pre-amp only works on the mic input, the line input (built into the mic pre) doesn't really go through the pre's affects, even at that that pre-amp on the Mbox is built so that it affects the sound in the least possible way. So you could record through the pre-73 and plug the line out into the line in on your mbox mini and just plug your mics into the pre-73.

    I love this Preamp!! I'm picking up an API Lunchbox and getting a Neve 511 and GAP 573... It may be cheap in price but it really holds up! My current pre's are 2 UA 710's, Focusrite ISA One, and This GAP Pre73 MKii... and it holds up with all of them. I'm not saying it's better... I'm saying it holds up!

  • @recordingrevolution

    @KarmaMusik This is the final mix, but with minimal effects on the vocal. It was a simple song to record.

  • @Typhoon792
    @Typhoon792 11 років тому +1

    It would be helpful if we heard it in comparison to a clean/transparent pre and without any additional processing, and especially without the comparison, it would help to know what mic was used. So the vocal sounds rather muffled, and it's really hard to tell what's effecting what. I don't really like the sound of the vocal here but I'm not sure that really tells me much on whether or not I'd like the pre. I've also just had my eye on it recently.

  • @bpanmusic001
    @bpanmusic001 11 років тому +2

    I love the sound of the vocal. Which mic did you use for the vocal? It's great with coloration. Not just reproducing the original Neve, but also giving a new character to the vocal. It's my cup of tea as it adds warmth to my vocal. Clearly this is the box I must get and I think I will get addicted to it. Thanks for clear review.

  • @recordingrevolution
    @recordingrevolution  13 років тому

    @triclops8 I understand, but I just find those listening tests pointless. With so many mic choices, vocalists, rooms to record in, settings used, it could sound very different. I just picked one simple use of it so you could hear it in action.

  • @recordingrevolution
    @recordingrevolution  12 років тому

    @HeavyCrownRecords Yeah they updated the preamp and now sell it for $50 more. That setup should work just fine.

    Ya know what...I'm still in the process of searching for a pre-amp for my specific sound and I've order this along with the focus ISA lunch box and the pre-73 sounded MUCH better, but I had to return it to go back on the search for "THE CHOSEN pre amp" ...now I own the Avalon 737. I'll tell you right now...it's just a bunch of hype its clean and all but still sucks...I'm gunna return it and settle back down with this pre-73 along with the PreEQ81. You really DO get a beautiful color sound with em...guess that's why they call it GOLDEN! :D

    • @burgerobob
      @burgerobob 10 років тому +1

      if you can afford the Avalon 737, why don't you buy the Neve 1073 instead of pre 73 ?

    • @KeithRobProduction
      @KeithRobProduction 10 років тому

      Cause I feel like I can produce the same result with the golden age pre without spending all that money

    • @burgerobob
      @burgerobob 10 років тому

      Keith Rob even if you replace the stock chinese transformers with Carnhill on the input and output, use the original Neve value tantalum capacitors in the signal path, and installed the NOS Motorola 2N 3055 output transistor just like in the original Neve, it still won't sound like the 1073
      my point is, if you have that big amount of money for a preamp, why settle for a low end preamp ? pre 73 is really good indeed, but if you compare it to the high end preamps out there you know there is so much better choices out there

    • @checkerace50
      @checkerace50 10 років тому

      burgerobob And there was a test done where they took the ISA 1, a Behringer Ultragain Vacuum Tube Pre, and then also built a pre for 5 bucks and the 5 dollar pre actually won against the ISA one. Of course, Behringer came in 3rd for best sounding pre etc etc. What I am saying is, it doesn't always matter when it comes to how expensive something is. Usually less expensive things are of course of lower quality, but not all of the time.

    You Liquid 56 interface has a 1073 model in it, I believe - have you compared that one (since your interface is actually a focusrite) and the Golden Age? I would hope that focusrite would to a good job with the 1073 mic pre on the interface. Thanks in advance.

    I've had a couple of Focusrites based upon Neve designs. They were the budget ones like the Voicemasters. However if I remember right they were as expensive if not more expensive than this one. I own the original Pre-73 and warm is the word. It's an over wrought term but really take that number 73 and apply it. It's got a very 70's sound. It's luke warm like water. If I were to compare it to say some pop recordings from the 70's I'd say Paul McCartney. Helps a lot to use a tube microphone though

  • @recordingrevolution
    @recordingrevolution  13 років тому

    @jamesbordy I spoke incorrectly. Meant to distinguish the fact that it is a discrete signal path with transformers, unlike more budget pres. Annotation is made.

    really brief and nice review.. but I dont agree about 4:56 where you say "its not better then interface pres.. just different" i dont agree at this point. Even PT HD rig sucks against this thing for peanut. Even guys with avalon were amazed by its quality and changed their setup. Its the cleanest preamp I know. May not fit everyone but its definatelly better then any build interface pre!! (even solid state logic or apogee stuff) But must add that Mackie VLZ3 mixer pres sound very close to this..

    Hi thanks for this video. Can someone please clarify how this is setup? If you take the output of the preamp into one of the available inputs of your audio interface (mine being Mackie Onyx Blackbird), won't it color the sound again going through the audio interface?
    Could you also go over how to setup external compressors please?
    Cheers

    Hi Graham, I first of all want to tell you that I appreciate your valuable time that you spend informing us about mixing, and everything related to recording studio. I have a question, it maybe a stupid question. I have a focusrite ff 428 which for me is an excellent mic preamp. I want to buy a cheap tube preamp to add that extra warm that a tube offers. But my question is this, it is possible to link my focusrite preamp together with the tube preamp before connecting to a compressor and then to my Apogee duet? I want to know if this connection can damage or induce noise to the signal. Thank you so much.

    Would have been allot better had the ratio to your talking, and the actual demo been reversed. I own one of these and a potential buyer could simply read the manual online to take in what took you every bit of seven minutes to spit out. The "real magic" is in what this unit does to your signal path. The few seconds that you devoted to this at the end of the video was barely enough for one to decide if actually going out and demoing one for themselves is worth their time. Trust me, it is. And if after you have purchased and used one for a while, you might want more of the good stuff. This can be had in the form of mods that are available for the Pre-73. Such as transformer/coupling capacitor upgrades. This is a formidable piece of audio gear, and for the price it really is a "no-brain-er"

    @lightsaved I am using a GAP 73 pre modified by ZenPro audio with carnhill transformers and tantalum transistors with a Rode NTK. If you wanna check out a song I did with this setup check my song Rack and Ruin out on ReverbNation or Myspace. Just do a search for Wyatt Scott. I write and record my original punk and folk songs. I absolutely love my GAP and My NTK and highly recommend that pairing. The K2 is even better I've heard than the NTK so I don't think you'll be disappointed.

    I thought these were good until I started looking into them more. They are flimsy, and I read people saying the knobs strip very easy. Not something I would waste my money on. Everybody should look into the Warm Audio TB12. Those are awesome!!! I heard a shootout between the TB12 and the Avalon 737, and it was CRAZY how the ToneBeast stood it's ground!!! UA-cam it!!! Mouton Rothschild No you need an Audio Interface to do that.

      +Daniel T. Vasconcelos Thanks for that info. I have a mixer that I bought recently and I have yet to get a power supply unit for it because it didn't come with one. Come to find out, I will have to spend more for the power supply than the mixer--that is, at the price I bought it. I saw a mic preamp that I would like to get but wasn't sure of what additional devices I would need to make it work. So, you think a nice external sound card can be used if an onboard sound card is not up to par? If yes, then that would mean I could just have the mic, external sound card, and the preamp. Needless to say, I will be getting the power supply unit, just not right now. Thanks, again!!!

      Luoyisi Shimisi Well, the best thing to do, what most people woud recommend: Buy an USB audio interface - like a M Audio Mtrack, or any other brand of your choice. It will provide you one or two (or even more if pay more) very good preamps, external sound card, monitoring, and sometimes even MIDI. With the interface you don't need other preamps, unless you want different sounds. But most cheap things are pretty much the same. Then you can use the mixer to use multiple channels, but your recorging channels will be limited do the interface.

    I really want this preamp,but I heard you can't hook preamps on the mbox mini,cause you can't bypass the mbox mini preamps. Then what interface can I buy so I can hook up a external preamp??
