  • With so many Golden Age Project Pre-73's floating around in studios all over the world, I wanted to see how much difference it would make stepping up to the Golden Age Premier Pre-73.

was the WARM AUDIO 73 in your quest for a preamp. if so, why did you choose the GAP over it?

Nice vid. In case you've been looking, like me, to buy one of the GAPs for a while, lots of reviews and feedback I've read said the Premier was definitely a noticeable step up from the MKIII.

Brooo theres a company called Revive Audio that will modify the circuit of these Premiers for like $240 US and they make it sound reeeally close to a Neve 1073 🔥

Man when you cranked up the gain and got more color THAT was fkn NICE man. That was the money right there lol great sounding preamp. I am looking at the 500 series version of this. Are you still happy with it?

Yeah I love this thing, don't have any plans of getting rid of it. I've been running all my sung vocals through it as well as acoustic guitars, horns, whatever really, it's just so freakin smooth. There are versions of the Golden age project 500 pres that have the carnhill transformer, bit cheaper than the premier, and I imagine a similar sound but I honestly have no idea what the difference would-be in reality. Good luck with it!

Hey mate! I’m in Australia as well and looking at getting one of these. The price is pretty great from the place in the UK you recommended. Wondering how you went about powering the unit considering the power supply would have been UK specific? Don’t want to just chuck an adaptor on the end if that’s going to blow it up haha! Cheers

Hey, it's the same voltage so just grab a travel adapter from UK to Aussie plug and off you go!

Hey man, I wish I saw your channel a few months ago!
    I bought a Shure SM7B and a MOTU M2 - but the SM7B is SO gain hungry,
I think it needs around 70dB of gain but the M2 only provides 60dB.
I just had to buy a Dynamite DM1 +28dB Booster, because when i max out the gain on my M2 it's noisy!
These vintage boxes sound good man.
I wanna do podcasting and maybe even voiceovers.
I'm just in my lounge really, it has hard floorboards and no curtains, it's not a dampened room in any way shape or form lol
That's why I got a dynamic mic so it doesn't pick up hums, aircons or outside traffic etc
I'm wondering if I should try a Rode NT1 - but even the shure mic is scary, it picks up my inhales, breaths and everything.
Is a condenser mic in an untreated room just ludicrous and a waste or money?
What mic are you using in this video, it sounds epic
Also, what audio interface do you use, to get the GAP into your computer
I'm in Sydney, where are you?
I was thinking of getting into voiceover work in corona times, but have no idea where to start.

Hey, thanks for checking out my vid! If you're looking for a preamp that's clean and transparent, go for something like the grace design m101 or Camden 500. I was running a Focusrite ISA One for a long time and while it's a little coloured, it's still a really nice sound with heaps of gain. The Golden Age is a bit too coloured for things like voiceovers where you're better off with a pretty uncoloured sound. Check this image at GS to get a rough idea about how all the popular pres relate - www.gearslutz.com/board/attachments/so-much-gear-so-little-time/464344d1430173364-describe-preamp-color-image_6910_0.jpg . In terms of your mic choice, well, they're a great mic but there's definitely a misconception about dynamic vs condenser with regards to picking up room noise. Pickup pattern would make a big difference as well, and also how hard you drive the gain - since higher gain basically = more sensitivity in the mic due to the higher current getting pumped into it. I wouldn't go with the NT1, I think the Shure is a superior mic. It's best to treat your room first before throwing more money at gear, there are cheap solutions, temporary and permanent, that can make a massive difference. Office baffles, sound foam, insulation batts. Get the room treated, you won't regret it.
In terms of my interface, at the moment it's an M-Audio Profire 2626 into an RME via ADAT, but I've just bought an Antelope Orion 32 so when that arrives it'll replace all of that gear. If I had to just buy an interface, I'd get an Audient ID14 or 22, SSLL 2, any of the Apogee or Universal Audio stuff is good too, though a bit pricier. Otherwise stick with your current interface and upgrade your pre.
I'm based on the Gold Coast.
If you're looking at VO work, check out my mini course that I've started uploading sections of to UA-cam, and if you have any questions I don't cover in the course just flick me a message.

It's the mic. Rode microphones can to have a rather harsh top end on certain vocalists. This preamp is actually really warm.
