This was super interesting. Makes me sad that all over the world it’s harder (financially) to study humanities. And that says a lot about the world we live in.
Such a cool project! I’m in my third year of a Spanish PhD and it is so hard to find non-STEM PhD representation on UA-cam. Changing the project is a sign of good research practice in my opinion because it means you are adapting to the evidence that you are examining rather than trying to force the evidence to conform to your hypothesis. Even though it’s taking longer, your project will be better in the end because of your willingness to adapt. Keep up the great work :)
Thank you. My dissertation plan didn't go as I wanted, and I struggled to come to my senses and realize it wasn't something to be ashamed of. Sometimes, the perfectionist in me takes control and doesn't liberate me from the guilt of not being able to do everything I initially wanted. This is my first great project, so I wanted it perfect. Knowing that it's a learning process and it's okay to take my time helps me to not feel so overwhelmed writing my dissertation. Founding someone like you, who talks about your struggles, helps a lot, too. Your research looks amazing, and from the way I see you talk about it, I know you'd do an amazing job. Lots of love!
It's incredibly valuable to see where you ran into issues, and how you figured out how to move forward. It's also reassuring to see that someone who's clearly very capable and driven still encounters crises. Can't wait to come to the archives with you, I love a good archive trip! :)
This video was really amazing. Your Phd topic is really interesting and extremely rare so finding resources for it must be really hard. You obviously had some challenges but you overcame them and moved ahead. The way you have done work for your dissertation is commandable. Like they say, you have made a very beautiful chocolate cake, just have to put the cherry on top. Eagerly waiting for you becoming Dr. Kayelyn.
Thanks Kaelyn, it was so interesting to hear how your research has evolved. I can only imagine how many twists and turns you must have uncovered once you started dipping into the archives!
Hooray! I have followed your Oxford journey, which was my frame of reference when I went to Cambridge - and now you're PhDone at Yale! I couldn't have been more proud of u. thank you for sharing your journey. Looking forward to your next life chapter.
Hey Kaelyn, just wanted to say thank you. Your channel has been so inspiring even as language/linguistics major. I submitted my first grad school application today! I took advice from from so many of your videos!
I love hearing about your research! My research mentor suggested I start working on my dissertation from the first semester because of the issues you have come across. Even if its little bits at a time. I came thinking I knew what i wanted to write about and now I'm on a different track. Same timeframe different subject. I early in the PhD though so I have time to get through it. Retreats are great!! We need one in Virginia! lol
hi kaelyn! thank you for sharing your process through all this! I have also had to extend my PhD timeline from what I originally planned so I am with you in solidarity
Hi Kaelyn! Here's a resource that may help! Then, when time permits, write your book on what might be missing or how this journey can be less stressful 🥰. The Dissertation Journey, by Laura Hyatt & Carol Roberts.
Vee Kativhu is doing her PhD from Claremont and has an awesome UA-cam channel dedicated to her educational journey that led her to her PhD program (previously documented her Oxford and Harvard degrees)
Ay my university (Montana State), your dissertation must be submitted to your committee at least 2 weeks before your defense, which must occur at least 2 weeks before the end of the semester. The dissertation must be perfectly formatted and approved by the grad school one week before graduation. It’s a much easier timeline to adhere to that yours it seems like! But definitely more last-minute haha
@@KaelynGraceApple Then start with the literature review, which is a comment I made to one of your videos. It will build your confidence. Maybe separate by themes or collective topics and then bridge and analyze ideas. When I was writing my master's thesis, I started with the literature review because I wasn't ready for the individual chapters. You write it, which I believe may be the hardest content, then you know for certain where to take the other content. Don't worry. You got 20 months. Ha!!!!! Happy writing and resting and productivity. Be safe. Oh yeah, be glad you're not in the U.S. right now for obvious reasons.
It's interesting that Yale expects you to pay for supervision if you run over the set time period. This is not the situation in Europe or Australia, indeed I don't know anyone that has not run over time.
Is it a requirement for your PhD programme to also publish an article in order to graduate? Our PhD programmes here are only 3 years 🫠🫠🫠🫠 currently suffering

Glad you enjoyed it!
Haha fab title 👏🏽 #PhDiva
🥰🥰🥰
I prefer writing the body first, but once you have the body done, writing the introduction and conclusion becomes strangely strategic.
I wish I could write this way 😅😅 I keep trying and am finding it so difficult

God bless you
