I'm 46 and just finishing my undergrad at UW. I intend to apply straight away for a masters. There are only two schools that offer the specific program I'm interested in (Exeter in England, and University of Amsterdam). I've been anxious and feeling overwhelmed because what they are looking for felt inscrutable. This video systematically broke down their perspective and offered a meaningul and digestable approach. Thank you. Feeling less in the dark now.
I'm in my sixties hoping to apply for PhD now that I have retired and can pursue my own interests. I have definitely struggled with imposter syndrome so this video was just what I needed for guidance and for a much needed boost to my confidence. Thank you Kaelyn! See you at the Symposium!
I just wanted to say I'm so happy you're discussing this. It's such important information that I wish had been out there years ago. I started my college experience at the age of 44, and am almost finished my PhD now, age 54! You are never too old to learn something new.
Kaelyn, first, let me say "thank you" for this video; ESPECIALLY what you said at the end. I really appreciate your thoroughness and compassion expressed in this excellent video! Secondly, as a 48 year old starting his PhD full time in three weeks, I connect with everything you mentioned in this video. I decided to change careers about a year into COVID at the age of 45 to pursue my passion. I'll spare you the details, but long story short, I ended up with my masters and got an assistantship in a PhD program here in the US. Though everything Kaelyn says is spot on, I would add two minor points: 1. In my interviews, I used my previous work experience not only show how my skills are transferrable to producing research, but also how I can relate to being a professional. They see this a someone who can potentially make their lives easier me being able to anticipate the needs of a working professional (my advisor) while keeping mindful that I don't want to add more work on their plate. 2. The simple fact that we know what we want out of life tends to be a breath of fresh air for potential advisors. The level of confidence when you know what you want changes the dynamics in the person sitting on the other side of the table in how they respond to you. Potential advisors are looking for students who will most likely finish the program. Having a foundation of knowing who you are and what you want raises the chances of program completion. Being a non-traditional (aka older in this case) student has never hindered me at any point in this journey so far. In fact, it's been a huge advantage and I have a feeling it has to do with what was mentioned in the closing lines of this video. My apologies for the lengthy message but I hope you find it helpful. ☺
This is the advice I needed to hear, thanks Kaelyn! 31 and been putting off a masters or PHD (that is a slight pivot) for a few years. Still can't quite do anything about it, getting married in December! But maybe enrolling in a class that gets me those writing samples....
Thanks for the motivation and tips. I’m a mature student pursuing a Masters in Ancient History while unable to work due to chronic illness/disability. I’m also getting started on UA-cam, though with a focus on Historiography and the Hellenistic world focusing on Egypt. Keep up the good work.
I’m 41, working on my EdD, with a full-time K-12 teaching job. This is my fourth advanced degree and everything you’ve stated is right on point in what people should consider when choosing the right program for their goals and circumstances.
Thank you so much for this video! I am 35, and will start my masters in gender studies in September with a hope of going into phd after this. Juggling full time studying with a 9-5 is rough, but being back as a student is worth it all and distance learning has been a blessing!
Thank you so much Kaelyn, I’m 30 and actively preparing to go back to academia after being a lawyer, with the twist of being in Japan and not knowing any university or program so it’s taking me an enormous amount of time to research and understand.. but I’m passionate about linguistics, and I want to go up to phd!
thank you for this video! the last section was the boost i needed as i have been feeling nervous about going back to school. i begin my part-time Masters in History in Singapore in two weeks' time and I have been preparing my life to accommodate it!
Thank you for making this video. I don’t feel so old now. Life experiences does fill in the gaps for me while in college and it’s something that I’m not regretting going at 39 years old. I’m getting 2 bachelors degrees. I will say that determine my management style is becoming a bit more difficult bc it makes me really mad. I’m feeling triggered 😩
I am a nurse consultant aged 48! Just got into my professional Doctorate In Nursing!! I am proudDyslexic! I did my degree and triedmy masters butas a singlemother at the time couldn't complete so ended up with a PG cert now look!! , thank you for all your tips x
Thank you for this video! I always wanted to go back to school but never thought it would be possible due to my poor gpa years ago and working years after graduating but now i feel like i have a chance one day of being accepted to law school or phd one day. Thank you again 😊
Thank you for this. I'm going back to school in my 30s to get a bachelors with the hope of hopping over to Europe afterward to get a Master's degree. Get my foot in the door that way to stay over there. This video was really helpful!
I took 3 years to teach between undergrad and masters, then just took a year after completing my masters, and will be starting my doctorate in the fall!
I'm 56 and want to do a PhD in Clinical psychology. I want to be licensed in Texas, so online is off the table. Any thoughts? Texas told me people get online degree and get licensed in Psychology, but won't give a list. Any ideas?
For an Oxbridge applicant, If your most highly regarded recommenders were professors who were doctoral candidates at the time, and you have collaborated with them on research projects, and they have since completed their PhDs and transitioned into the field, what would you recommend in this situation?
italian undergraduate student (stem) who wants to apply for 1+3 in neurosciece (oxbridge, other UK's uni and perhaps in us). thanks for all your advance
Hiii Kaelyn , I am last year graduated student in bachelor of technology. I want to apply in Oxford University for 2025 sept . Can u please help me with that. It will be really helpful and grateful to u.

If you don’t want to fund your studies, don’t leave it too long. Most scholarships for masters are capped at age 35, and PhD scholarships at age 40.
I really needed that pep talk at the end today. Thank you! ❤
