The lyrics aren’t fully accurate in the lyric video. These are the lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
Put one up for Shackle Me Not, clean logic procreation
I did not invent the wheel, I was the crooked spoke adjacent
While the triple sixers' lassos keep angels roped in the basement
I walk the block with a halo on a stick, poking your patience
    Y'all catch a thirty-second flash visual
    Dirty cooperative med platoon
    Bloom, head-trip split ridiculous
Fathom the splicing of first-generation fuck-up
    With trickle-down anti-hero smack (Kraken!)
I pace my game for zero hour completion cretin, splash
Duke of early retirement picket dream
    American Nightmare hogging the screen
I'll hold the door open so you can stumble in
If you'd stop following me around the jungle gym
Now it's honor, and I spell it with the 'H' I stole from heritage
Merit crutched on the wretched refuse of my teeming resonance
I promise, tempest-tossed breed with a bleeding conscience
See, the creed accents responsive but my sports divorced the wattage
And I'm sleeping now - wow! -yeah, the settlers laugh
You won't be laughing when your covered wagons crash
You won't be laughing when the buzzards drag your brother's flags to rags
You won't be laughing when your front lawn is spangled with epitaphs (You won't be laughing!)
Then I'll hang my boots to rest when I'm impressed
So I triple knot 'em and forgot 'em
    His origami dream is beautiful
But man, those wings will never leave the ground
Without a feather and a lottery ticket, now settle down
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
Slacker-bound intimate tabloid headline with a pulse
Shimmy cross the centerfold, enter dead time engulfed
Divvy crumbs for the better souls
With seven deadly stains, adhere the blame to crystal conscience
The result's a lowlife countin' on one hand what he's accomplished
Okay, link me to activism chain activate street sweep
    Plug deteriorating cenobite pendragon
I hock spores coursed by the morbid
Spreading of mad men, Alley gospel
Sinking your Lincoln-Log cabin and Charlie Chaplin waddle
I could zig-zag and zig 'em again
For the badge dreams sparkle in my brick wall windows
Another thick installment of one night in Gotham
Without the wretched; Houston, we have a problem
Attached to the festive batch of city goblins
Who split holiday freaks on a box cut cinema high road bellow
Head gripped, watch red bricks turn yellow
Sort of similar to most backbones at camp Icarus
Where all fiddler crabs congregate and get pampered for bickering
Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman
You only call her a bitch 'cause she won't let you get that pussy
Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests
Or maybe you're just an asshole who couldn't sweet talk the princess
Kiss the speaker wire Peter/pacifism pegging threshold
    Stomach full of halo kibbles
Wings span cast black upon vigils
Here to Duck Hunt ticker tape vision and pick apart the pixels
I got a friend of polar nature, and it's all peace
You and I seek similar stars but can't sit at the same feast
Metal Captain, this cat is askin' if I've seen his bit of lost passion
I told him: "Yeah," but only when I pedaled past him
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way

The first time I ever heard this song, I was 17. I was still trying to understand Commencement At The Obedience Academy. I realized Tony Hawk immediately. I would skate around to Labor. When I started to understand him, I wanted to keep on going. I know his lyrics before Skelathon. I also know The Impossible Kid. Aesop is the greatest rapper, all time

If you want another Aes song, I'd heavily recommend Cycles To Gehenna if you want to dive down the rabbit hole, or Blood Sandwich if you want something equally meaningful but easier to digest.
For your benefit, if you do choose to go with Cycles to Gehenna, parse the lyrics through the lens of a biker trying to die by driving dangerously. That one hint should make everything much easier for a first time listen.
There's also Get Out of The Car if you want a really short reaction video, possibly with some tears.

I don't remember the first time I heard this song. I do remember that for around 4 years this is the song I put on every single morning before I walked out of my room and my roommates always asked me why. Not that they didn't enjoy the song they just didn't understand why it was my anthem for the day.

I was probably in 5th or 6th grade.. possible younger haha. My brother was old enough to drive at the time and I’m pretty sure he was already graduated at the time. He would take me places with him and he had the massive CD binders and would always let me look through and pick something (even though usually he’d end up picking for me haha). Anyways, I loved him. He was my idol. I wanted to be just like him. He had already shown me Streetlight Manifesto that I grew to have a crazy love for because of him and got into playing music because of them. It was Christmas morning, and my brother got me one of the smaller CD binders and he paid attention to all the songs I liked when we’d drive around and he burned me CD’s with every single song, and there two entire albums he burned me. One was Labor Days, the other was a Sage Francis CD. Listened to the Aesop one first and fell in love. I wish I could see him one more time man. I miss him.

Some of Aes's albums include lyrics, others don't. I don't think Labor Days or the Daylight EP did. But when he released the Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives EP in 05, the limited edition included a book of all the lyrics for his previous records, going back to Float. Plus some dope photos and art.

I've heard this track a hundred times and I'll never forget these lines...
"Yeah, you settlers laugh! You won't be laughing when your covered wagons crash! You won't be laughing when the buzzards pull your brother's flags to rags, you won't be laughing when your front lawn is spangled with epitaphs! YOU WON'T BE LAUGHING!"
The old comfortable wealthy homeowners pretend to be rugged Oregon Trail pioneers in a covered wagon, but they live in a house with a nice front lawn. Soon to be covered with their gravestones like stars on the American flag.
    and
"Maaaan, this origami dream is beautiful but it'll never leave the ground without an angel feather and a lottery ticket, so settle down." The meaningless fake American dream that'll never become a reality without magic and luck.
All I ever wanted was to work hard at something I love all day long, (pick apart the day put the pieces back together my way.) but the wealthy capitalists humiliate me and force me to work for their dream, a folded paper crane that'll never fly.

    • @ju4408
      @ju4408 Рік тому

It's an old skateboarding video. But the title alludes to freedom, which brings in all sorts of other perspectives on ideas in the song. Getting the reference just leads to more clusters of ideas and lenses to see the other ideas through. I always think of the idea of Indra's Net when looking at how he writes. Each separate cluster of ideas highlighting parts of the other metaphors.

@@ju4408 I was mainly curious about the level of awareness of the H Street video Shackle Me Not. I like you work my way through my own interpretations of the words and any ideas he might be try to get across. In the end he is the only one who knows for sure and my take on the song is just as right and valid as yours or anyone's for that matter. Thank you for the through lesson on how to understand references in Aesops music but until he explains one you guess is as good as anybody's. Now if you want to talk about Blind Video Days I'm here for it.

@Anthony V My dumbass forgot H Street even did SMN. No sleight intended. I think he's using that title to refer to not holding back those trying to push humanity to new heights or achievements- real world progress for all, not just a few. Skating is a self-made skill/art, but often criminalized. Like Prometheus, shackled to a cliff to have his liver eaten daily for stealing fire from the Gods to help humans. No good deed goes unpunished in a rigged system, something like that.

Aes isn't that deep in this song. The song itself is him feeling unforfilled as a rapper even tho that's what he wanted, to "escape the 9-5". The opening line is referencing who influenced him to the culture while also perpetuating the childhood dream of freedom of responsibility which is echoed in the chorus.

I was about 14 when I read a lot of praise about Aesop on a german rap forum, so the first song I checked out on youtube was Daylight / Nightlight. Was instantly hooked by the beat, his voice and delivery, even though I couldn't understand jack shit. Now I'm 31, my english improved drastically, but I still can't grasp the context of his older songs most of the time. Suffice it to say he's still one of my favortite american artists, maybe number 1 alive now that DOOM has perished.
