My cat, Loki, was a very young stray who adopted me about two years ago. He kept getting beat up by neighborhood cats so after neutering, I transitioned him into being an indoor cat. A year later, he still howls incessantly late at night to go out. I've tried all the "Jackson Galaxy" things: enriched "catified" environment, play times, puzzle food, not rewarding the misbehavior, etc. Nothing works. He's been thoroughly checked out by cat specialists and is other wise perfectly healthy. With our climate (Texas) it's usually too hot or too cold, so mild weather where you can open windows is rare. When it is a mild day and I open the windows, it seems to "reset" my cat's memory of roaming free outside and his yowling to go out spikes for a few days... ...during the day I can deal with it' but my cat's 2am howling to go out goes on for hours and I'm almost at wits end. Loki is an otherwise sweet, affectionate kitty with no other annoying habits. Help.
I know the feeling! Just like my Sunny! A wonderful cat in every way except for that. He's 13 and he's been that way his whole life. He just loves to sing opera at me many times a day! He does drive me nuts, even though he's an adorable purring bundle of fluff.
Some cats are just shit talkers, I put mine in this category. Typically just playing with the cat helps for me. Otherwise ignoring it he eventually chills out and finds a cozy spot to lay down.
What the cat behaviorist at Humane Society recommended was playing with my cat every morning for 30 minutes and putting het food in a food puzzle. We thought it was anxiety but the behaviorist said she just has too much energy. It has stopped her from meowing in middle of night but she still does it sometimes when she thinks I “should” be awake. Also sometimes she stops for weeks on end but then something happens-a winf storm, for example, and she does it again. For weeks. I try not reinforce and just ignore but it seems so random. It’s nerve wracking and it really irritates me.
Yeah, dude needs to take a hint. Not really gonna trust the word of a guy who continues to hold a cat for several minutes who's clearly pissed off about being held.
@@gracepennell2337 The cat is clearly pissed off. Your comment is akin to telling me I could've left my abusive father's house if I wanted to. Nope; I wanted to; couldn't; trauma is real.

Just a note about NEGATIVE result using L-THEANINE. I gave my yowly 19 year old female cat about 12 mg of L-Theanine sprinkled on her moist food. She was out of it, sleeping, for 2 days. Took her another day and a half to start eating and feeling like herself. She is a pretty healthy old girl. Not sure why she reacted this way but it wasn't good.
All these people complaining probably don't realize as a veterinarian, this is probably the mildest cat behavior you see all day. You seem like a nice guy. Sorry Gussy had a cranky day.
Yooooo my cat meows and yowls all the time. We arent even holding him either, he just meows a lot. What do i do?!? D: we play with him and give him rubs. 😔😔 i feel like we spoiled him too much and now he is accustomed to being pampered. 🤔😔
Great vid, Dr. Andrew, except for Gussie's distracting growling. Why didn't you put her down? She wanted to get away. Other than that, I love your vids and the wealth of knowledge and experience you generously share!
LauraBeth Scibetta my proof is that im not a vet im a 15 years old teen while hes a grown up and "a vet" but i can still treat a cat better then him. I think a real vet would know when to let go of the cat even if its for the sake of the video
Out of desperation for my yowling cat I put a dog sweater on him. It's slightly small and worked like magic. He's hyperthyroid. Less pacing, less restlessness, more normal behavior.
Flicking and flapping your hand in front of her face and your other hand not letting her go to the floor to get away from the annoyance is frustrating her and pissing her off. Seriously, if you're going to talk about cat behaviour and ignore when she's frustrated and uncomfortable just seems stupid. Please listen to Gussie more? She's trying to tell you to leave her the heck alone!
My cat is a black cat and he keeps yowling and walking up and down the hallway at night.... is something wrong with him? Because he has a full food/water thing every day.... I dunno what his problem is._.
Freefeeding a cat isn't how they should be fed. Feeding a cat 3-4 times a day is ideal. Before each feeding, they need to exercise. Out in the wild, they prey hunt catch and then eat. So doing that for them will help with many behavioral issues. I use the laser pointer to play with my cats and if your cats aren't use to exercising/playing, just be patient about it, they will come around. Keep trying. Some cats just like other toys more. Jackson Galaxy has many toys that cats like so I'd get some from him, get catnip and definitely a laser pointer.
I used to leave out for my cats too so I know how this is. Cats need you more than you think. They need exercise and a lot of it. Try doing it at least 10 minutes 3 times a day. If that can't be done, do 20 minutes on the last feeding before bed. They will be exhausted then eat and won't want to do much besides sleep. Many behavioral issues are solved by doing this. Now I'm not sure if this will solve it fully because there is a chance that something else is wrong with your cat so go to the vet if you can. Either way, please try feeding your cat the right amount, don't let the cat choose how much to eat and exercise is a MUST.
My cat Suki is almost 12, she has always been very vocal.Unfortunately she sounds like she is complaining all the time, but she is also affectionate and sleeps on my bed at night.I know this is not ideal but its comfy for us both and she seems calmer and quieter too. Many thanks for your great videos.
my cat does this too and he doesn't even like human food. he will scream until I at least let him see what's on my plate then scream in disappointment if its something he doesn't like and im like "what? my foods here your food is over there."
Might be because human food taste so much more better and I mean I've never had cat food but I don't imagine it would taste good anyways try getting your cat a different type of cat food every time you run out of cat food
There are a lot of stray cats in my area but today I found one with its tail cut off. Luckily I had cat treats with me so eventually it started to let me pet her. She was so thin I could feel her very bone. She followed me home and is very loving but she won’t stop meowing. And I don’t know what to do. She meows like every 5 seconds real,y loud. And it’s 3:30 am and I’m trying to sleep.
my female burmese and i have reached a point that i have to separate myself from her to save my sanity, ive taken to locking her outside during the day (depending on her attitude) ive tried methods to teach her the constant whining gets her nothing but she wont learn. she has constant access to dry food and i feed her once a day with wet food she starts from 2pm until i feed her at 5pm. whines when its cold, whines to get attention even whines when she wants to cuddle. i wouldnt mind AT ALL if it wasnt such a soul crushing sound lol.
I can sure relate to the soul-crushing sound part! I really think that's just part of the personality of some cats, and it's better than pissing in the house. Separating yourself from her at certain times is quite okay, I think, to make it possible to keep loving her, and to sleep. I'm sure you take good care of her and give her everything she needs.
It’s 2:18am and my cat won’t shut up so I took him outside he wanted back in so I open the door and he wouldn’t go back in, so I had to drag him in, and when I tried to go back in my room the door was locked, I live by myself with my dad who’s asleep on the other side of the house..... needless to say we’re sleeping outside tonight✌️✌️
Sometimes my cat just sits down in front of the bathroom at 4 in the morning meowing, even though there is a perfect water bowl downstairs. How do I stop this?
YOIR cat is STRESSED OUT because you're waving your hand-arm right IN TO HER FACE the whole time while you're talking AROUND and AROUND AROUND and AROUND IN HER FACE OVER AND OVER IN HER FACE!!!!!! My cat keeps meowing even though she has food show me out when she wants food but there’s times that she’s meowed when there’s food and water in her bowl in the cat litter is even clean I just hope there’s nothing else wrong that we would have to take her to the vet she does eat perfectly fine we feed her when she’s hungry or when she supposed to be fed she just runs around the house meowing we even play with her and give her attention but she still seems to meow
One of my male cats is about 19 or 20 years old. He got severe dementia and started yowling and peeing all over the house for about nine months. Little by little I honed in on what was necessary. For starters, you have to feed them the hills prescription diet, cd or kd. You’ll instantly see a difference in their behavior. I did with my cat anyway. Yowling stopped after first day. Next you have to give them no other foods that contain magnesium or other nonsense. In other words, no cheap food! Stick to the hills prescription. Give your cat amoxicillin or clavamox two or three times a day. That will help out with any type of magnesium struvulite crystallization that they may have which adds to the peeing here and there. Buspar may also help as well as adding ovaban, 10mg 2x a week, which is good for their nerves. Also, you can try lining the litter box with paper towels or wee wee pads. He likes that more than the litter. In all honesty, it seems that the diet has the best effect on them when they’re at this stage. You can also buy additional pet wellness vitamins, etc. which I’m going to dive into next. Good luck. It takes patience. I take in the sick cats so I’m already border line crazy with the every day care needed so when this started, you can imagine it was rough! Trial and error. Hang in there and remember, it’s dementia, they really don’t understand what’s happening.
My Birman never stops. I average four hours sleep each night. He’s nearly two; neutered and has more toys than Toys “R” Us! I decided to just ignore him. He jumped up and began to meow directly into my ear! He demands my full attention for as long as he’s awake, and I’ve got to the stage where I really can’t take much more. I thought purchasing a kitten may help. But my VET stated that he could resent any attention paid, by ME, to the kitten and become hostile to it. There has to be an answer? I love him so much, but his constant meowing along with lack of sleep is making me ill.
My cat has 4 meow tones and I know what she wants 1 she's hungry 2 she wants milk 3 attention 4 she wants to go out to climb on top of my travel trailer roof to run around up there then after while I go up and bring her back down... She climbs up the ladder 90% angle... Then she likes to sleep with me and my dog. She never growls at me
My cat gets everything he ask for. I feel he playing games with me cause he knows I’m coming to the rescue. He is quite in the day and sleep all day. Never falls when the night comes he turns cray cray. Jumping on the bed scratching the mattress. Running like someone after him, bitting me when I’m sleeping. The meowing is the worst like I’m beating him in here. I know he’s Possessive like I’m his property and I don’t like it one bit. Oh yeah Doc, your cat don’t like you at all. Watch your throat at night cause she’s going to get you.
My cat meows a lot. But I have done some of the things you said by instinct and it really helps. Like ignoring them when they meowing and meowing until they stop
My cat has a clean litter box, bowl full of food, a comfy bed, bowl full of water. But STILL wont stop meowing to go out of my bedroom at night. I cant just leave my door open because the kittens (my cats kittens) will run out. She gets so annoying and usually keeps me up till 3 AM even on school nights. If anyone else knows what to do when they do this, please help. Edit:My family rescued my cat from a store she had been dropped off at. She is probably about 1 or 2 years old
thanks for sharing your knowledge and giving me/us these precious info i like your way to deliver, just as if you were talking to a friend rather than doing a medical conference using complexes scientific vocabulary Cheers 🥂
My cat is an indoors breed of cat, but his previous owners used to let him outside a lot, He can't really go outside because he keeps getting into trouble/getting hurt because he doesn't know what to do, runs around the neigborhood, chased by dogs, etc. We do have a lead for him, so we try to take him outside at least once a day for a few hours but he just gets louder and louder with the meowing, even after I've already taken him out. I've got no problem taking him outside; it's just that the meowing is so frequent and loud and it only increases each time whether I've taken him out or not .
I tried every trick. I haven’t slept the night in three years. Last night at 3am I gave up. They say “don’t give in”, I say “screw that, I need sleep, give in!” I let him out and am not letting him back in until I go to bed tonight. Maybe he’ll be worn out by then. It’s the last choice option. He’s going to be an outdoor cat at night from now on, at least until winter.
I’m too fed up to let him back in today. I waited three years too long, He’s beaten my concern for him, right out of me through this nighttime torture. One tiny mew tonight, his ass is going out immediately and from now on when I go to bed. We will see how he determines his own fate, tonight.
How many of you are here because just like me, you couldn’t sleep for the gazillionth time due to your 🐈 cat yowling and meowing throughout the night and you want to know what to do to console your cat and stop this behavior 😩😩😩
My 15 year old cat was diagnosed with kidney disease and Triad disease and started yeowling and meowing constantly every day this past year even to the part of "screaming." The cat veterinary hospital i take him to refuses to give him any meds for pain or cognitive decline (he does have blood pressure medication) and they tell me he doesn't have hyperthyroid issues. It drives everyone in the family crazy and I don't know what to do.
Petting a totally annoyed cat in that manner...really? Introduce the cat and then put the cat down. This was stressful to watch. I hope things changed in the past two years of how you might handle cats in a video.
My cat constantly meows. Your cat seems upset. She keeps hissing and growling. My other cat peaches had developed severe arthritis in her back and started hissing when her back was touched. She later passed away due to old age
My cat keeps Meowing at me. She sounds like she's crying. Ive given her tons of attention and made sure she wasnt hurt and had clean food and water. What do i do? Also I know she's not in heat.
My cat keeps yowling all throughout the day and night because there’s another cat outside and they’re doing to same yowl to each other. why? How can i do to fix this??
Happening to me right now! My cat keeps doing it wanting outside to the other cat that is a stray out there. I think maybe my cat is in heat, I'm not sure... Idk what it can be besides that. The stray will sit at the back door and do sounds to my cat and then my cat won't stop and gets louder and gets frustrated bc I won't let her out. Here it is almost 330 in the morning and she's doing it.
i love my cat to death but im starting to get really annoyed with his constant howling/ meowing to the point i may have to re home him, hes not spoiled but well looked after and i set 1.5-2 hours a evening to just playing with him litter box cleaned twice a day, fresh water twice a day, vet approved food (with the stamp thingy) theres been a few nights where hes woken me up at 2 am and i have to be at work for 5 and he just wont shut up that ive had to put him in my camper all night just so i can sleep, hes been to vet on multiply occasions healthy all shots and fixed. i also let him out side (on leash) as often as i can i live in an area with lots of predators on my property such as wolves, bears, coyotes etc that all come close to the house so hes never outside with out me. (he was never an out door cat) but it was something the vet suggested i try doing.
He is talking with his hand and the cat thinks his hand motions are threats to it. Sometimes he swings his hands straight into the cats face, only to fall short of slapping it in the nose by centimeters(like at 2:00 into the video). I watched the entire video just to see if the cat would swat his hand away or if he would eventually wack the cat with a hand gesture. His tips were good too..
I have 2 sphynx one is perfect an dthe other is so annoying. She meows so much when I'm trying to sleep. She is 2 years old and is spayed. How do I get her to shut up.
i adopted a kitten around thanksgiving and all of a sudden she meows a lot and i saw her peeing on a towel and pooping on an old binder, shes litter box trained . is something wrong with her?
the problem is my cat meowing everytime i move, she can't shut up even a lil bit. it makes me crazy. whereever she saw me, she will start meowing. like a hungry cat does not eat for a week, even she already ate, and the food is full.
Outside of going to the Vet (we've made an appointment), would our cat be hurting in any part of her body? Say when we're holding, petting, or brushing her.
I have a cat who was a stray and he yowls at my other house cat behind the pet gate, so it's not true that cats will only meow to humans. He is so annoying that there are times I want to throw him back out there where he came from. He is semi-feral and I have not attempted to pick him up but he needs a check-up. He may very well have hyperthyroidism because he is so hyper, restless and hungry all the time. His attention span is just like a hyper child. Play one minute with one thing, move to the next, go back to the first and so on, followed by yowling which is enough to make anyone crazy. Nothing seems to satisfy him for long periods of time. I have not slept well since I brought him in. He does stay quiet for a few hours at night until 5 a.m. I've been using Feliway multi-cat diffusers, calming sprays, Rescue Remedy and Zylkene but nothing helps!! Ready to pull my hair out!!!
My 🐈 Cheetoh is two years old. Or will be in November. Every night around 9:00 PM to like 10:30 PM he yowls hard core. He is also super Goofy around this time. Running around and doing backflips in the air. Playing really hard. He is a Bengal mixed if that has anything to do with it. He opens drawers and cupboards. And just is silly. My other Bengal mixed is relatively quiet. He meeps and squeeks a lot. He is Cheetos brother. Then I have Binx who is a little 10 week old baby who sometimes yowls but it's a quiet yowl. I usually think it's cause she's bored. Same might be for Cheetoh. But Cheetoh has been loud and vocal his whole life.

Thanks for the insight Doc.😃 Other things that may keep a highly active/chatty cat busy:
* dog treat dispensing ball (add cat kibble & easy setting)
* interactive dog puzzles
* hiding a small portion of its meals (kibble) around the house so cat must use it’s nose to hunt.
* regularly scheduled play time.
* have chatty cat wait in separate room while prepping meals.
* set up a guest bathroom or catio w/ cat bed, water bowl, toys, soft music..., so your cat will have a safe space to meditate and reflect. 😄
* wear noise canceling headphones while napping/meditating...and remember that your cat is very attached and dependent on your loving kindness, care and affection.

I think the bathroom wasn't small enough. She needed to be contained and she calmed down and she wasn't mad at me I the moring tonight she is snuggling with me. All is well faster than i thought. My female cat Emma who is 19 has started yowling. My male cat Oliver who was 13.5 years old, passed away 4 weeks ago. I think she misses him and it's like she's crying for him. I pulled up a picture of him on my tablet, and she couldn't stop staring at it. She sometimes sniffs his toys. His bed is still sitting there with his blanket. I never washed it because I thought that his scent might comfort her. I feel so bad for her.
She definitely does. Is she still around or has she gone to see him? She’s very old❤ very amazing
@@Boats_N_Hoez Yeah Emma is still around. She turned 20 in June. Her health is declining though, so I don't know if she'll still be here for Christmas.

mine has this annoying habit of being all friendly and loving and at other times dashing off and running from me when i enter a room or make even the slightest move like im constantly abusing it...it will run off to the other room and yowl for 3 minutes and its SOOOOO annoying. it never did that for 4 years and now its like a daily thing. im honestly at my limit

So....how do you stop your cat from meowing?😣
Watching this at 5 am because my cat wouldn’t shut up
My cat, Loki, was a very young stray who adopted me about two years ago.
Tried to watch this video and was upsetting and distracting from this message bc of the upset cat
My god. You can talk about cats without having to hold one for the entire video.
My god you can watch a video without having the need to comment on it.
Yeah, dude needs to take a hint. Not really gonna trust the word of a guy who continues to hold a cat for several minutes who's clearly pissed off about being held.

Gussie is GRUUUMPY 😂
Yes
All these people complaining probably don't realize as a veterinarian, this is probably the mildest cat behavior you see all day. You seem like a nice guy. Sorry Gussy had a cranky day.
Yooooo my cat meows and yowls all the time. We arent even holding him either, he just meows a lot. What do i do?!? D: we play with him and give him rubs. 😔😔 i feel like we spoiled him too much and now he is accustomed to being pampered. 🤔😔

When I go to get, I get scared… they scare me. You make me feel like I can conquer everything😊 I LOVE YOU DR JONES
Great vid, Dr. Andrew, except for Gussie's distracting growling. Why didn't you put her down? She wanted to get away. Other than that, I love your vids and the wealth of knowledge and experience you generously share!
Thanks- yes Gussie is a growler :-)
you didn't answer the question, Dr. Why didn't you put the cat down?
LauraBeth Scibetta cuz hes a fucking psycho fake vet
do you have proof that he's not legit?
LauraBeth Scibetta my proof is that im not a vet im a 15 years old teen while hes a grown up and "a vet" but i can still treat a cat better then him. I think a real vet would know when to let go of the cat even if its for the sake of the video
Out of desperation for my yowling cat I put a dog sweater on him. It's slightly small and worked like magic. He's hyperthyroid. Less pacing, less restlessness, more normal behavior.
That's good to hear, thanks for sharing.
Video starts at 3:15
Flicking and flapping your hand in front of her face and your other hand not letting her go to the floor to get away from the annoyance is frustrating her and pissing her off.

I got more value from the comments than from the video. Meanwhile the doctor was about to get eaten by his own cat lol
My neutered male cat goes through days when he meows and rolls around, then it stops. Happens once every 2 months or so . He is 4.

My cat yelling full auditable"Nowwwww"
Every time I’m making my food, my cat starts meowing wanting food. She has her own food so I don’t know why she wants some of mine.
my cat does this too and he doesn't even like human food. he will scream until I at least let him see what's on my plate then scream in disappointment if its something he doesn't like and im like "what? my foods here your food is over there."

Release the gato, it's been over two years.
Thanks

My Birman never stops. I average four hours sleep each night.
He’s nearly two; neutered and has more toys than Toys “R” Us! I decided to just ignore him. He jumped up and began to meow directly into my ear!
He demands my full attention for as long as he’s awake, and I’ve got to the stage where I really can’t take much more. I thought purchasing a kitten may help. But my VET stated that he could resent any attention paid, by ME, to the kitten and become hostile to it.
There has to be an answer? I love him so much, but his constant meowing along with lack of sleep is making me ill.

Hi, Good question. I would have you look at getting some Feliway
Please consider cbd oil
