  • In this video I go over Dog Harness vs collar and which is best for your Pitbull puppy. A lot of owners start with the harness and some with the collar but it's important to note that each piece of equipment has its own way of use. I believe the dog collar is more suitable for leash and recall training and a harness is great for off-leash training. Dogs tend to pull with the harness if they are not trained from a puppy to an adult how to properly walk on a leash, while the dog collar can lack control and be harmful if used incorrectly. They both have their own pros and cons and each can be used at different times but I go over what you should start with first.

"Different strokes for different folks " my bullies were always trained on slip leads /collars ,then put on harnesses . But the small dogs/non bullies types most had harnesses (unless they were pullers )

I personally use a harness, that the leash is both attached to the harness and his collar. He has so much power in his chest being a power breed that that is what has worked best for me. Along with I have spoken with multiple vets that have recommended a harness rather than a collar especially a choke or prong collar because of the adverse effects later in life due to the added stress on the esophagus. I personally believe that those types of collars shouldn't just be used by the average dog owner, and left to trainers etc. Due to in my personal experience working in vet offices and in public I see them being used incorrectly so much , and used not in addition to training, but instead to control an out of control dog rather than put in the time to train the dog. The y are useful tools if you are using it in such a way but any tool is useless if you have no knowledge or experience of how to use it properly.

You hit the nail on the head for me. I just started walking my pit bull and she was constantly pulling and I tried correcting her but that would only last a few seconds. I had a eye opening experience a few days ago where she saw a small dog and literally wiggled backed out of her harness and I loss all control. She’s not a mean dog, but she’s pounces and has tried to get small animals before( cats, squirrels)… a man and his kids were walking in the park with their tiny little puff of a dog and my dog went bonkers, backed up wiggled and she was free. I screamed to pick his dog up and he did. His girls were frightened and I assured them she wasn’t a mean dog just overly friendly and tends to be too rough with smaller animals so please don’t run and there’s no reason to be afraid. I called her name the owner called her name as well. I was able to grab her and hold tight until they were out of site, but I was in full belief the harness was secure . Today I walked her with the harness tightened and her collar tightened with a second leash. There’s is a hook under the harness and I’m figuring out how to incorporate that security feature. I noticed that our walk today with both harness leash and collar leash was the most comfortable walk ever, she stayed on my side and when she tried to walk ahead of me she corrected herself. This is our new way of taking walks and to that family, I am so sorry for any type of anxiety you may have felt during that encounter!

I like to have a harness on my Pittie at all times. When he's around the house, it's just a simple strap harness but once I take him outside my property, I have a full chest harness like the one you showed. It has saddle bags so that he always carries his own supply of potty bags and treats. I prefer harnesses simply because I do not like the way that it is possible to injure your dog if you have to restrain them for some reason when they just have a collar on. Don't get me wrong though, my dog also wears a collar for his tags and identification purposes only. Love your videos BTW, you are a wealth of knowledge and information. Keep up the good Bully work Dude !!

i have always had the best results using basically a lil more than a shoelace its one of those slip leads they use at the dog shows. keep it high up a the top of the neck. its got a tab that kinda keeps it in place (not choking of course) very easy for corrections like you said at the beginning, a lil pop and the dog understands good video. as usual

I found that a dog that pulls alot will learn better with a collar, you can do a choke collar at first so they understand the concept of pulling is bad, once they learn that you can transition over to a regular collar since they will remember the foundation and feeling learned from the choke collar.

I have both, she's in her leash training right now so if it's us on a walk I'll clip the leash to the harness. But I keep the collar for ID tags! You're totally right about teaching them with the collar first, a harness encourages them to pull sometimes so what I did was I taught my dog on the collar then switched to the harness for more control over nipping and jumping, great video thank you!

  • @MaxAngor

Well that explains a lot. We got Chip the harness because he can (and has) slipped his collar. He's gotten a lot better on the collar over the months so I took him to a park on the harness for a workout (such as I can) and it was ALL pull.
Then again, when my wife and I took him on a different route for his bathroom walk, he pulled so hard on his collar that I thought he was going to strangle himself so maybe that's more familiarity than anything.

We don't have a fenced yard so he's waking us up at all hours of the night to go out. I hate to be graphic but he's basically been shitting water the last few days so it's not quite as simple and easy-fix as it would be if he were at least needing to go outside to poo normally.

I use both…Collar for short walks,to keep tags and for looks, the harness gets used for hikes as for more control when passing people/dogs/kids not only to teach her to stay while they pass or being petted but to grab her up/away quickly in case we run across a dog without manners. It also makes people more comfortable to see that I have a hold of her harness and she does not pull while they walk by or pet her. She is still young and learning, as time goes on she is realizing the harness means ‘hiking and time to be on my BEST behavior’.

Firstly thank you for mentioning how prong collars are for training only!! I'm not an expert or a dog trainer just a animal lover. I was working one day(in retail in a mall) and a woman came in with her beautiful pitbull, but it was so disheartening that she had a prong collar on it. I knew she wasn't training or anything because she would just tug the dog to follow and was shopping around looking at everything. Anyway at times she would pull too hard and you'd hear the dog screech bc it physically was actually hurting, and she would only be like oh as in my bad. I couldn't stop staring bc I was genuinely upset and concerned for the dog, especially after witnessing it screeching a few times from being prodded by the collar etc. I've also seen a gentleman once in my neighborhood go for walks daily with his dog, I can't remember the breed but it was built like a pit(muscular and and pretty large in size) and he'd have a big stick like a wooden stick from a broom or mop and he'd take it on the walks. I never saw him use it but he had it as a threat of discipline which i could tell by how he'd hold it like ready to jab or whack the dog so they'd "walk right" I guess. Personally I'm fascinated by what can be accomplished with a collar vs a harness in terms of easy corrections, and less effort to correct. However as mentioned in the video I think depending on specific tasks or activities harnesses are more beneficial. But for everyday casual use, personally collars are the winner.

I'm going to use a collar because my dogs a puller and today he made me upset by trying to chase after another dog as he is very social. When I stopped him from pulling he runs in a circle around me to try catching me off my balance, luckily I regained my balance and stopped him. I felt mad as I had scared the lady walking her dog due to me not being able to control him. I instantly searched up some vids and found this one. I feel like I did the mistake of switching to harness to early as I realized the harness did only make him more of a puller and I can't tug his leash upward because he won't pay much attention to a tug from his back compared to his neck. Another thing is when I try to redirect him he'd get on his back legs standing so using the collar forces him to correct himself. I also saw another vid of yours where you press you thumb on their lower jaw since my when my dog gets to excited he becomes a nibbler. Nice vid it was very helpful.

My pitty hasn't been very socialized with people other than his dad because I got him during rona season, and is very aggressive towards strangers when in public. However I'm not sure I want to change this behavior because I feel as though it makes him a better guard dog I live with another women and a little girl. Him being more protective makes me feel more secure. Because my other pitty is very easy going and loves people and will greet you with a wet tongue and isn't as reserved. My people aggressive one is the sweetest thing and such a big baby but is very possessive. Is this a bad thing ? He is by no means dangerous he doesn't just go after people randomly. But he will growl if for say a man gets too close for his comfort. He has never bitten anyone and with reassurance that he is ok and people aren't a threat he will welcome pets. He is still a puppy only 7months old. But I'm not sure if I need to nip this in the butt before he gets bigger or if he can stay the way he is. Because I honestly don't mind his reserved nature. But I don't want to add to the stigma that revolves around this breed because he is a big baby.

I completely trained my one year old pitbull puppy backwards, he does not pull on the harness I clip it to the front of his chest so he can't pull but as soon as I put him on his collar he's pulling me or if I put it on the Back clip of the harness he pulls me I'm gonna have to start over

I recommend EVERYONE talk to a dog trainer that is experienced in behavior modification. YOU may not see an issue with you and your dog's walking habits, but they will show you how to properly walk a dog, with the right equipment and what cues your dog is giving.
Prong collars are not only for training - they can be an everyday tool - if you've been properly trained on how to use it. If you have a well trained dog, the dog will not place themselves in a position where they can't breath because you've consistently trained in that position.
Lastly, you are ALWAYS training because you always need to be aware of your surroundings and your dog's cues - especially on a walk around the block

Using leather collarsmostly. But 1 day i tried harness on my 9month pitbull he just snapped it after seeing cow distractions...etc...so perhaps reconsidering the quality material. Harness looks nice on a dog but less control indeed..😅😂

Prong collar 👍🏾. Once your dog learns how to walk on one, there is no pulling, so why retrain your dog to walk on a flat collar or harness?

Just think about the name. If you have a pulling dog the last thing you want to do is put a harness on to harness that power meaning they will pull harder they can put their shoulders and weight behind it. Basic collar best way to control any dog who actually listens. If you need a prong collar I believe there is a problem. I work with hundreds of dogs. I have goldens and labs come in with prong collars what the hell.? One of the best inventions ever especially for a pulling dog is the gentle leader. It uses their pulling against them it’s not you it’s them if they pull ahead it pulls their head back and they really hate that. So they learn if I don’t pull you my head won’t get pulled back. Not that I’ll be choked or poked.Just that I won’t be able to go where I want and I hate that. They’re very stubborn intelligent dogs.I’m so tired of seeing people get pulled across a field by a pitbull with a harness stop harnessing the power you idiot. You put a harness on if you want them to pull a wagon think about it.
