Okay but Audition is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. Just the way it starts out like a romantic comedy with something off about the exploitative premise, how the guy sees the girl as an object to fill the holes in his heart. And when she opens up to him about her trauma, instead of facing the fact that she’s a human with needs he has an entire nightmare about how he thinks she’s actually a monster who’s sole goal is to make him suffer. Only for him to wake up next to her and realize he’s engaged to a human he barely knows because this whole time he’s seen their relationship through a self centered and warped lens. It’s just so fucking cool!!

There's this somewhat historical restaurant that was built on the same complex as a major cinema in Lisbon. They, at some point, decided to make it a movie theatre themed one and have movie nights where you could enjoy their delicacy, which is this steak done over a somewhat savory and thick coffee sauce. They'd also have a small giftshop where you could, if you liked the movie they shown there, get a DVD of what you just watched. Amongst all of those titles, since presumably they would offer a DVD copy of every movie they'd shown there, was a copy of Saló. To this day I wonder what kind of thought process they went thru because, no, they're not like a grindhouse sort of place. Also their movie screen could be easily seen from the outside, so it meant that on a rather busy street at night in Lisbon, you could turn your head and witness a dude being forced to eat poop blasted in 4k.
Nice to see Visitor Q get a mention, it gets overshadowed by Miike's other disturbing works. Gozu is another that gets overlooked but it isn't disturbing just great. Anyway the most amazing thing about Visitor Q is that as wholly messed up as it is, I found it quite touching, in how ultimately the family come together at the end. Miike is probably my favourite film maker as his range is SO broad from kids films to Ichi, to classic samurai and bonkers sci fi. It is something I don't think anyone else could lay claim to.
Agreed: Gozu is great (and just the right kind of surreal for me, as someone who appreciates Miike for his... uh... versatility of absurdity, more than his forays into shock-horror gore/nastiness).
I watched Salò yesterday. Why? I suffer from the horrible combination of being weak AF for horror movies AND being morbidly curious. It's not super gory compared to many of the "most disturbing films of all times", in fact there are few scenes with gore; but the tension, the drama, the constant verbal and psychological violence on the movie makes those scenes resound even more. The fact is isn't just constant on-screen gore, the fact the violence that does is shown on-screen isn't gratuitous and is driving a story (a dreadful, depressing, and deeply upsetting story) makes it echo in my brain so much more than a Orozco the Embalmer of sorts. It is indeed, disturbing and depressing. I wouldn't recommend it lightly, but it is a must-see for any cinephile. Just... be prepared.
As much as I dislike Brad Jones (the Cinema Snob), he did a review on Salo back in 2008 or 2009 and with the jokes aside, he made a lot of excellent points when it came to talking about Pasolini's commentary on western consumerism, the horrors of fascism, and violence. The final shot, for me, is more horrifying than the more infamous scenes like the Circle of Shit and the climax with the Circle of Blood. It's beautiful and haunting.
As I like to put it, Salò is not a movie you can enjoy but a movie you appreciate. I think is a masterpiece of cinema but I would truly hesitate to recommend it to someone. It is truly a bleak and painful watch. Also it resounded a lot with me because I'm from Argentina, where we had a really dark and depressing period of time (since 1930 up until 1983 with some somewhat bright sections in the middle but still harsh nonetheless) because of Fascism (South America in general suffered the tyranny of it around those decades). Fascism did so much disgusting and unspeakable shit to innocent human beings just for the fuck of it and Salò depicts that the way it needs to be depicted and thats why I think it is such an awesome film. I understand anyone being uncapable of watching it.
I love these videos from you- genuinely the most disturbing movie I've seen all the way through is probably Karla (pretty messed up but tame by these standards) and I hated it and generally do badly with this stuff. However I am cursed with the desire to know everything about everything so I love to hear about it secondhand
Hey May, I love your presentation style. I really can’t watch animal violence and was unprepared for it in Nekromantik. The romantic head tossing scene however genuinely made me laugh. The Miike film that has stuck with me through the years is Dead or Alive, purely for the paddling pool scene. The misogyny. I hate this scene more than any other, it is burned into my brain.
I remember noticing that way back and wasn't sure if I was imagining things, which made some more recent controversy they got caught in interesting. Canada is a wild place.
I remember happening upon a documentary about jonestown as a child. At that time I had never even heard of Jonestown. It absolutely destroyed my little brain
I had no idea someone actually made a movie based on mai chans daily life, I literally read the first chapter and clocked out faster than a janitor at a strip club oml

You didn't have to do that, I really appreciate that you care about your audience???)
May may not post videos very often, but her channel is definitely a case of quality over quantity. I'm always super excited when one comes out. Also, I'm low-key obsessed with extreme/disturbing movies so this video idea is exactly what I want :D
I feel blessed in the most cursed way that you've opened the doors to Inferno for me as early as the year 2020. I have only watched Nekromantik from all those films you shared, and frankly, it's enough for me. It's very much enough. Also, I watched Verotica after your video on it, and your review gets to the soul of that film.
I found Mermaid in a Manhole as a young kid and that moved me with its message. I adored it my whole life and still talk about it. I didn't know you'd bring up the Guinea Pig series. I've been looking for people to discuss it with for so long! Hmu.

I loathe A Serbian Film. Not simply for it's depravity. It truly just felt like an excuse for the director to simulate his sick fantasies. Disturbing cinema doesn't need to be so crass. Love these videos btw, subscribed ❤
@@davidsheriff9274 Already saw it. Along with many a disturbing movie. Tom Sixx is just a shock jock. There's a difference between weirdos and predators
@@melissaroszkowski8911 A Serbian Film tried too hard, I can imagine the filmmaker sitting down and thinking "what can I do that will get everyone talking" it didn't seem organic to me. Tom Six is not just about shock, I think the first Centipede movie was really interesting and original, I have never seen anything else like it, the second one, your right, was just a gross out fest, but I still thought It was fun. The third one is literally one of the worst films I have ever seen. He has a new one called The Onania Club which he says no one will release, I'm not sure it even exists, he might be trolling everyone and just made a few trailers. What did you think of Martyrs? The first time I watched it, I thought it was just an excuse for a misogynist to make a movie and show gratuitous violence against women, but when I watched it for the second time, I felt it is actually a really great creative original film.
@@davidsheriff9274 I actually quite loved the original Martyrs. It didn't feel like a misogynistic endeavor. More the obsession of the beyond. I do appreciate your stance

The most disturbing thing in this list was the part where you went to Taco Bell for a Baja Blast BEFORE Blockbuster. That Baja Blast is gonna be watery and gross by the time you get home with your movie. But for real, good list.

I actually rang in this year with Melancholie der Engel, partially because May had made me curious and partially because the German horror scene is so limited (for a variety of reasons) and I was tired of the ever same three people throwing ketchup at the wall. I gotta say one thing - it's not as bad as it appears. Not because it's not fucked up beyond belief but because if you understand the dialogue, it's a *laugh riot*. Like, you'd get into one of the really fucked up scenes, you feel your stomach lift a little... and then they'll spout one of the most hilariously dumb lines in the history of cinema and you can't help but laugh. It basically breaks its own immersion, and between that, the bottom of the barrel ADR and the shittastic film stock, I was ultimately more amused than grossed out - not because I'm a hardcore gorehound or need to posture or whatever, I'm actually quite a weenie, it's just that after the fifth time I laughed my ass off, my immersion was just snapped like a handful of twigs, never came back and I couldn't look at it as a movie anymore but just... a collection of scenes some people threw together in the woods on a budget of 16 DM and a case of beer. I'll acknowledge that if you don't understand the dialogue, your experience will be significantly different because your immersion won't be torpedoed at every turn like mine was, and it'll likely work much better that way.

I watched A Serbian Film at a time that I was very depressed and felt like nothing could phase me. I gotta say it doesn't live up to the hype, you gotta imagine the stuff yourself to be disturbed because they barely show a thing. I actually recently watched this movie Possum and I think it should be more present on most disturbing movies lists. It’s not really a gore movie though so I get why people don’t mention it.
Gods, what a grimy, stale-looking, hopeless movie Possum is! Like you’re certain everyone in it has halitosis, a hole in their socks, bleeding cuticles, & a missing button. All of which is to say, they did a great job on the movie. This ugly hopelessness is perfect. It’s hard to watch & hard to define, which is probably why it’s not on many lists.

Saw Kakihara in the thumbnail & thought I'd hear your opinion on Ichi the Killer. It's definitely a movie & it's definitely not for everybody. I look at it as more of a cautionary tale on the nature of revenge instead of something to be admired & emulated. Have you seen any more of Miike's work?
One of Takashi Miike's wonderfully fucked up works that seems to really fly under the radar is the full length version of Masters of Horror: Imprint. Even the cut version segment was banned from being aired. This segment was like someone double dared him to make this with free reign to use as many taboos and uncomfortable realistic looking torture scenes and mind fuckery you can throw into one film. (Kind of like Visitor Q but without the all the extra bodily fluids) It's an awesome watch and is just so fantastically Miike.
Man, I remember watching Ichi the killer in college and really liking it, but I don't remember much of it. I'm due for a rewatch. Audition is so good, I'm glad I forced it and Tetsuo Iron Man on friends- though the latter makes me happier.

Miike is a total madman, and I love his work. _Ichi the Killer_ is easily one of my favorite films, and I recently had a very fun movie night showing it to my friends. Brilliant visuals, excellent music, and endlessly quotable dialogue. _Audition_ is a bit harder to get through with company. You have to have the right kind of sadistic personality to enjoy it. But if you do, it pierces deeply. It gives similar vibes to the American film _May._ No relation, I'm sure. ¬_¬

Yes!! I was hoping someone would mention Gozu!
Orozco the embalmer is a beautiful character movie.
I couldn’t finish it
As I like to put it, Salò is not a movie you can enjoy but a movie you appreciate.
@@thatsprettylunchean In Brazil we also had a historical period marked by fascism. Salò echoed in me also as a product of our history
WE LOVE YOU MAYYYYY, congrats on all the sold copies of FLUIDS!
I love these videos from you- genuinely the most disturbing movie I've seen all the way through is probably Karla (pretty messed up but tame by these standards) and I hated it and generally do badly with this stuff. However I am cursed with the desire to know everything about everything so I love to hear about it secondhand
Oh good. Me, the guy who can't even get through a Friday the 13th movie, is doing this. Because I hate myself, evidently.
Imprint is my favorite of Miike's. It was an episode of Masters of Horror. Light on the gore, heavy on the disturbing implications. Also, abortion.
so... some of the movies literally tortured animals and it's legal?
"I've watched Cannibal Holocaust on LSD."
Veteran of the Psychic Wars over here.
Every time the Vomit Gore movies are brought up I’m reminded that the Soska Sisters are in the second one. It’s so wild thinking about that.
I remember noticing that way back and wasn't sure if I was imagining things, which made some more recent controversy they got caught in interesting. Canada is a wild place.
Ya I really likes American mary
@@albertgein3082my favorite Horror Movie. Completely original & unique.
Hey! I was surprised and stoked to see your cameo in "Let's All Go To The World's Fair"!
I love it when Texans talk about Japanese animation because I always imagine them talking about someone called "Anna Mae".
I remember happening upon a documentary about jonestown as a child. At that time I had never even heard of Jonestown. It absolutely destroyed my little brain
Jonestown has almost become an obsession of mine, which kind of sucks, since there are very limited recordings of it. -:|
@@Foxiz you know real people died there
@@maddieb.4282 Yes, of course I know that
I had no idea someone actually made a movie based on mai chans daily life, I literally read the first chapter and clocked out faster than a janitor at a strip club oml
no matter where you may be personally your humor never seems to fail. she dont fuckin miss.
Love the edits on this one. Also the lil whispered "I'm not grossed out by NOTHIN" made me laugh
I've been watching for forever, and I think your content has gotten so much better over time. I genuinely appreciate you talking about this messed up stuff because it expands my world view and knowledge of film without me having to consume more awful content than I've already seen. Or get any viruses from sketchy movie sites. You fell on that grenade for us.
I get so so excited when you do more videos and I've been listening to your catboy podcast. Please keep making great videos about horrible videos.
I know this will sound cheesy so I put it at the end, when I get my first full time job next year your patreon will be my first subscription, so I can't wait. I really want to read Fluids but I'm going to heed the trigger warnings (thank you so much for putting warnings on your book???? You didn't have to do that, I really appreciate that you care about your audience???)
Always happy to see an upload. I can’t handle these things so hearing about them with sarcasm, humor and wit is awesome.
And great editing
Hmu.
Oh my god!!!! Where have you been my whole life??? I don’t even know what the hell I just watched but I’m pretty sure I would watch anything that you are narrating LMAO. I’m subscribed. !!!
I’ve been here since may made a top 10 disturbing films and she wasn’t even showing her face yet, just an animated character. Watching her career and creativity grow has been a great vibe and I love it so much
May, your my favorite youtuber. That word sucks, but whenever I see a new video it genuinely brings me joy ( somehow? Despite all the horror and nasty shit? ).
I've been watching your vids before your transition and I love how genuinely happy you look, especially when talking about these kinds of films. Can't wait to see whatever you make to your heart's content.
Oh, May, you've come for my heart yet again with this. I deeply appreciate that you started off with the note that you did since it was going to shake things up and make it feel like less of a mainstream list and something more cohesive.
I find it funny that Charlie Sheen thought Guinea Pig was a snuff film and called the FBI
"It is like watching paint dry if it was f**king a corpse" What a way with words!
alternative necrophilia movies: "Deadgirl" and "The Corpse of Anna Fritz"
"The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things " is never talked about its not as hard core as these but its fucked up.
I’ve just recently watched it and it is defintely. But a good movie!
The controversy around it is probably even more fucked up
Ya its pretty dreadful... also trauma and headless .. was pretty bad
I read the book and its sequel 'Sarah' when I was a young teen and it was my favorite for a long time! Also my favorite song, 'Cherry Lips' by Garbage was based on the books as well!
Also gosh, compared to your last top ten disturbing movies list, you've changed so much! You seem like you're quite happy / having more fun now
I watched The Bridge and Dear Zachary back-to-back about 10 years ago. Pre-autism-diagnosis me was DIGGING for media that provoked emotions in me.
jesus christ i didn't even know mai-chan's every day life got a film adaptation
Just did a legit spit-take during my lunch break at "it's like watching paint dry if it was fucking a corpse", I love you May
Dear Zachary made me sob so fucking hard. I was inconsolable afterwards. My heart goes out to the family, i hope they feel some peace and see some sense of justice
Same here, cried for a good half hour and then I got really ANGRY. The only other doc that did that to me was The Trials of Gabriel Fernanadez😢
I have friend who’s seen tumbling doll of flesh, Salo, the entire Guinea pig franchise, august underground mordum, Nekromantik and angels melancholia, I myself have seen Ichi the killer, audition and Salo. Mainly because I have a rule, if It’s EXTREMELY disturbing, and it doesn’t look like and it isn’t a found footage movie (cause I’ve seen like 60 of those), I won’t watch it.
The way you present these films and talk about them, is genuinely why I love you and your channel. You're hilarious, and I love this shit. A treasure of the internet!
I loathe A Serbian Film. Not simply for it's depravity. It truly just felt like an excuse for the director to simulate his sick fantasies. Disturbing cinema doesn't need to be so crass. Love these videos btw, subscribed ❤
it's also just like really boring. once you've seen the newborn scene nothing else in the movie can really phase you
If that's the way you feel, I would stay away from The Human Centipede 2.
@@davidsheriff9274 Already saw it. Along with many a disturbing movie. Tom Sixx is just a shock jock. There's a difference between weirdos and predators
@@melissaroszkowski8911 A Serbian Film tried too hard, I can imagine the filmmaker sitting down and thinking
"what can I do that will get everyone talking" it didn't seem organic to me.
I do appreciate your stance
audition is one of my favorite movies and i don't want to examine what that says about me. it's a great valentine's day watch!
I'm one of those people who, if I see somebody throwing up, it lowkey makes me feel like I gotta throw up, so I don't think I would be able to make it through a whole movie about throwing up
While it doesn't quite reach Tumbling Doll of Flesh levels of horrific, something about Meet the Feebles is just like pure radioactive poison to the brain and it greatly upsets me
Man made lord of the rings
I adore Braindead but the *trailer* for Meet the Feebles makes me ill to look at. I need to get around to Bad Taste.
I love that movie for calming my ass after screamerclause killed me
I'm gonna be honest, I think I personally like the manga more than the movie for ichi the killer. I just couldn't get down with some choices the movie made and the ending kinda sucked. However I'm really glad I watched it because of you and formed my own opinion. Thank you for the recommendations!
"And I've also seen the film on LSD."
Oh sht
The most disturbing thing in this list was the part where you went to Taco Bell for a Baja Blast BEFORE Blockbuster. That Baja Blast is gonna be watery and gross by the time you get home with your movie.
But for real, good list.
Honestly, the idea of making it a Blockbuster night with some Taco Bell makes me want to cry
Not if she gets it without ice!
I found you through the iceberg videos and I've been hooked since. Love the podcast so much I'm on the excrement patreon! I was so pumped when I saw this thumbnail
2:25 Girl, I love your energy, I’m glad I clicked on your video, but you have sufficiently scared me away from continuing on with this video. Sayonara 👋🏽
Maybe I’ll return when I’m not sitting alone in my house, but now is not the place or time for me to be consuming this particular video. Peace ✌🏽
“You may know me from May-caroni and cheese” is an underrated intro.
“The ends always justify the memes.” belongs on a shirt. Also, glad to see you’re doing well!
May truly is so much more entertaining than any movie she has ever recommended
Guinea Pig Devils Experiment is the best title to any movie deadass.
omfg dear zachary is the doc i used to watch to make myself feel Something, Anything when i was very depressed in college
edit: watching this while eating? terrible idea
I know whatcha mean. I did that with part 3 of her awful movie iceberg.
I’m desensitized, though, so it didn’t put me off my vegetable-fried rice as much as you’d think.
So that’s why I watch horror more often when I’m depressed. It all makes sense now. I think.
I made my mother watch it with me and it was a ride for sure .
I like that you put honorable mentions first it really sets the tone of what I’m exactly getting into
I don't know why I love hearing May talking about fucked up stuff so much. Never seen these movies and never will👍🏼
Cool, now that I've actually watched the video and not just commenting to be first, this was an interesting list! I used to watch these kinds of movies when I was in high school, and have since grown out of it. It's fun to hear about them, but I will leave the watching to you, May
I live with family. They wonder why I insist on keeping my door closed so often. Part of the reason is privacy. The rest is to spare them of hearing phrases like “incestual necrophilia.”
I watched A Serbian Film at a time that I was very depressed and felt like nothing could phase me. I gotta say it doesn't live up to the hype, you gotta imagine the stuff yourself to be disturbed because they barely show a thing.
Dear Zachary on the other hand I watched like the next day and it destroyed me. I hate when something gives you hope just to make it hurt more afterwards.
"I watch the nasty shit so you don't have to. I'm kinda like the nostalgia critic but leagues better and a woman" 🤣🤣🤣 I FUCKING CACKLED
May, your my favorite and I adore you, never stop. Also fuck Doug Walker lol.
"I'm kinda like the nostalgia critic"

I unashamedly look forward to your take on things that probably shouldn’t exist but they do and there’s you to talk about them. Looking forward to receiving my copy of Fluids!
Dawg! I watched your video all the way through. It cracked me up. Let’s plan to meet at Epcot and try some snacks at every country in World Showcase.
Oh how I adore you, your humor and your content. 🖤
i was a pretty early subscriber, but I haven't watched recently. I'm SO glad I did again. You're one of the funniest people on this platform and your videos rock
You know when I clicked on this video I wasn’t expecting to hear Dear Zachary mentioned but also yeah that movie will ruin you.
I never see Girl Next Door 2007 on these lists. The scene where they circumcise a girl using a blowtorch will stay with me till I die.
Ichi The Killer and Audition are sooo great I really need to watch Visitor Q.
Edit: DEFINITELY BUYING YOUR BOOK NEXT PAYCHECK!!!
Just Melvin is super disturbing imo.
Great list my friend!
Got here from jonjo lyons channel. Awesome stuff girl! its not often i find a disturbing films list i actually agree with. I was hyped when serbian film was only a mention. SUBBBBBBBBED
I would be interested in your recs for disturbing documentaries. Ive gotten many (great?) additions to my disturbing watchlist from these vids and i love hearing your genuine insight to them
Did you see "Dream Deceiver"?
I actually recently watched this movie Possum and I think it should be more present on most disturbing movies lists. It’s not really a gore movie though so I get why people don’t mention it.
Gods, what a grimy, stale-looking, hopeless movie Possum is! Like you’re certain everyone in it has halitosis, a hole in their socks, bleeding cuticles, & a missing button. All of which is to say, they did a great job on the movie. This ugly hopelessness is perfect. It’s hard to watch & hard to define, which is probably why it’s not on many lists.
i love your videos so much im genuinely excited every time you post!! great personality and content 👌
I'm new...so happy to be here! You are an excellent, wonderful being...we could talk. I was so psyched when you did your list for most disturbing books. I knew I found my place to be. Thank you so much and keep up the amazing work 🤗💜
If Contrapoints is the dark mother you’re, like the dark sister or a really close cousin.
I would love a video like this but about ultra gory death metal and grind bands. You could make a whole video about Impaled and Exhumed alone
I love you because I only wanna be traumatized or disgusted when I watch movies. Coming here helps alot
Downloading a bunch of these , love your work :-)
Man, I remember watching Ichi the killer in college and really liking it, but I don't remember much of it. I'm due for a rewatch. Audition is so good, I'm glad I forced it and Tetsuo Iron Man on friends- though the latter makes me happier.
hey i remember u… u introduced me to skinny puppy + warm leatherette. cool channel (via disturbing songs video). glad i originally subscribed 🎉
Awesome, hilarious! My most disturbing video is a toss up between Sound of Music and Mary Poppins- nauseating! Seriously loved Audition and have seen Nekromantik= good family fun! Liked, Subscribed!
I hadn't expected to have seen a little more than half of the list!
You've definitely inspired me to test my mental limits through media and man, you reallllllly put me to the test!
YESSS she’s back
TFW you're working on Doom levels that are going to be set to Chainsaw Gutsfuck, and May brings up Chainsaw Gutsfuck.
Chainsaw Gutsfuck brings everyone together, in the end.
Happiness of the Katakuris is an underappreciated gem of Miike's. Comedic horror musical at its finest. Came out the same year as Ichi the Killer and Visitor Q.
@@terminaldeity Ah!! I know, right?? I love _The Happiness of the Katakuris,_ I even keep a couple of their songs on my main playlist. Basically a comedy/horror version of _The Sound of Music._ He just has too many tasty films, I can't really compile a list of my favorites. It sort of comes down to what kind of mood I'm in at the time. As I said before, Miike is insane.

I have a new favorite person! WELL DONE! You absolutely nailed it. I've destroyed my soul with these films
Ichi the Killer and Audition are the only two on this list I’ve seen and I’m absolutely ok with that.
