- Aww the south. Such an important part of America’s culture. If you don’t live in the south, you’re missing out on a lot, pal. It’s an interesting region which I regularly poke fun at on this channel.
The south can be defined, roughly as this part - the deep south down here, and these states which are in the south but not IN the south if you catch my drift. But for the sake of clarification, for this video, I’ll be using these 10 states during this analysis.
The goal today is to find out which southern states are bad and which ones are...not so bad. There are many ways that you can define bad versus good, so we’re going to take into consideration common southern stereotypes, as well as agreed upon metrics which people say they want and don’t want when deciding on a place to live.
Along the way, we’ll probably learn a lot about the southern part of our country. And you may grow a deeper appreciation for the American south. It’s a region that’s lovable in many ways. You just have to know where to look.

If your state was in the confederacy your southern, Robert e lee is from Virginia and he’s southern. Not everything is about “culture” if your from the south, you grew up with this culture, and nobody talks about the northern culture, only about southern culture and classifying people in states like florida, Virginia and I’ve even seen North Carolina be called a northern state, just because you don’t think it is , doesn’t meet it’s not because look up states in the confederacy and the American south and FLORIDA, VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA, are apart of the south, all the people saying states are not southern are toxic people from the Deep South trying to make themselves seem better because they have to much time on there hands.
@@murp61 yeah if that were true, Texas, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee shouldn’t be Southern because of places like Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Nashville, Miami, and countless others. But I guess because Virginia has Richmond and North Carolina has Charlotte they’re pretty much California on the East Coast. That comparison fits better with New York.

I would only count North East and East Texas as "Southern", not South and West Texas. These Texas areas near the border areas are more linked to New Mex and Arizona than Kentucky and Alabama.

Kentucky was NOT a union state. It was a watershed state. It was technically neutral.
Kentucky was not a union state, it was more mixed if anything. Just because they were part of the CSA doesn’t mean they are "southern" now. Though North Carolina definitely still has a huge southern culture, and deserved to be ranked on here. Though Virginia does still have some southern culture, it as not as much as the other states that are considered southern.

I'm from NC. Born in Eastern NC and currently living in the Piedmont. NC is definitely southern. This list isn't based on historical/traditional accuracy.

All the metro areas in the South are basically blue (there's a particular vein of blue that seems to go through the piedmont region of NC/SC/GA and up the Mississippi river.) NC is undoubtedly Southern, but the cities are getting major influx of Yankees, particularly those of retirement age. If I walk past some old people in the grocery store, they're as often as not talking with New York accents.

Half the state's population is Southern Baptist, and half of the rest of the population is what my mother used to call fire-and-brimstone Methodist. Kentucky was also a slave state, and the state supplied more Confederate soldiers than most of the states in the Confederacy.

Missouri was (partially) Confederate as well. Missouri's Mark Twain is considered a Southern writer. But pretty much everyone these days considers Missouri mid-West.

I give Virginia its Southern status just because of its role in history as a southern state. Now, as someone who has spent a LOT of time in VA I must attest, the northern half has turned into an extension of D.C. and Maryland so geographically speaking yes VA is most certainly a southern state but culturally speaking: it honestly depends where you are in the state (like Florida).
Central and north Florida are as south as it gets.

I realize this video is old, but it just came across this on my UA-cam feed. First question, in WHAT UNIVERSE is North Carolina NOT a southern state? Same with Virginia. I'm guessing that he left those off for clicking purposes. It worked for me. He's also done Northeast, Midwest, and West. Some states didn't get ranked in any group, such as Alaska, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Va and NC.

All states have "liberal" and neo nazi....errr "conservative" areas. Cities tend to be liberal because when you live around people, you have to have some manners, hygiene, and people skills. City people realize they have some degree in interdependence on one another. Rural people tend to believe they are 'independent'. That is a delusion. I am from NC and it is absolutely southern! Growing up in central NC most people consider NC definitely southern and states like Virginia, West Virginia, & Kentucky as quasi-southern bordering on mid-atlantic. NC is a fantastic state and in my opinion the best southern state.
no way is Kentucky "quasi southern" Kentucky ain't nowhere near The atlantic and Kentucky is overall more southern than va or wv because wv is its own thing and half of Virginia is the north. NC is full of yankee transplants and while NC shoulda been on the list it ain't.
A couple cities in Virginia feel Northern. Like the ones around DC, and some cities have there own thing going on like Norfolk, and Williamsburg, but the state as a whole is southern. Virginia isn't on this list, because it would have won. Virginia is doing well, unlike most other states in the south.

This "worst" list looks almost like it's in reverse order. 😅 Florida, Texas, and Georgia are probably the only states I would choose to live in on this list. And I'm originally from Alabama! Lol.

North Georgia is especially gorgeous with the mountains, Lake Lanier, and metro Atlanta. But I enjoy the beaches in Florida too.
Alabama and Mississippi are two states I wouldn't even want to visit. If you move to Texas, that's about three steps up from anywhere in the South. Even Florida.

I would choose Georgia if it was Atlanta and surrounding or even Warner robins. North Carolina has many good places and also Florida is good anything Orlando going south is a good fit for me.

I do like some aspects of the South. People are more easily contemplative, warmer and less anxious about everything. This is my impression from a reeeeaaaal far country based pretty much on literature, videos and a Southerner I once met. So God bless, I can't comment much.

Ask a third- or fourth-generation Virginian, North or South Carolinian if they are yankees and I'm sure you'd discover the flaw in your map. It doesn't matter the politics nor the amount of people who've moved from overpriced and overtaxed areas outside the South, though maligned, Southern is a cultural identity that you don't get to define.

There are plenty of people in Virginia and North Carolina who would not consider themselves Southerners. The demographic map has changed over time. I have lived in Virginia and South Carolina. SC is definitely South. Virginia is more progressive and felt more like a Northern state to me. It wasn't nearly as conservative nor segregated.

95-99% of North Carolinians consider themselves southern. The only people who don't are transplants from northern states. If we're not southern, why do a good amount of us sound like we're from King of the Hill? Why do most of our restaurants serve sweet tea? North Carolina and Virginia were part of the South. You have West Virginia as part of the South and that is not correct. Virginia was divided during the Civil War. The eastern part of Virginia was part of the Confederacy had the capital of the Confederate capital in Richmond, Virginia. West Virginia was part of the Union. You map is incorrect. You need to study up on the correct history before you post these videos.

In my opinion you probably made some people mad by putting Kentucky as a Southern state but I think that Texas more as a western then a southern state. I also think that most people would think that North Carolina or even most of Virginia is Southern

WV, and OK are southern, but they are so close to other areas that they get influenced by them. Trust me if anything they are "Southern Lite" when compared to the southeast.

Texas isn't really that Southern anymore, thats really most East Texas. It would be hard to convince me the I-35 corridor, Houston, El Paso and Rio Grande Valley are culturally western. Mostly just rural Texas which is becoming a smaller and smaller slice of the Pecan pie. Texas is kinda a combo of Southern and South-western culturally. The Carolinas are definitely Southern.
Even then, East Texas isn’t really southern like the southern states.
As a native Texan, I will agree that Texas is a combination of the south and southwest. I’ve lived in Houston, Lubbock, Fort Worth, and by San Antonio and I have noticed that the western half of Texas which includes Lubbock is more like the southwestern states, while the triangular hub featuring the big cites is more like the south.
I'm a Mississippian and and Houston and Dallas is like a second home to most of my peers that escaped the plantations of the Magnolia state.

Sorry, you lost me when NC was excluded from the map classified as southern. It's very much southern and was a fortress of the Confederate during the civil war.

Driving to Florida every year I take a different route, Arkansas and Mississippi looked run down big time Alabama wasn’t much better the closer you got to the Gulf the nicer it looked. Florida is king of the southern states, the beaches are the best in mainland United States
I took a trip from Nebraska to Florida and the only state that left me speechless was Mississippi. The amount of Poverty is stunning.
From someone who lives in Mississippi you must only be looking on the highway the in both Mississippi and Arkansas most of the town is not on the highway and is further in but it is pretty nice up north very little poverty

@@bonezbaaaby I have always thought that is an absurd argument. You need to look at the shape of NC. To say it is not the deep south is to disregard its geographical position and shape. Certain parts of NC are further south than parts of SC, and my hometown in NC is nearly as far south as Atlanta. In what way is that not the deep south?
You're missing North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Missouri, Oklahoma, and even Maryland and Delaware. There are technically 17 Southern States plus 1 city state, Washington DC. 11 of these states were full-fledged Confederate States (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee). 2 of them were simultaneously Confederate and Union (Missouri and Kentucky). 1 was only territory at the time (Oklahoma). 1 seceded from Virginia during Lincoln's War (West Virginia). 2 were Southern States that remained in the Union (Maryland and Delaware).

Texas actually works the same way lol. The border towns and cities in southern TX are much more liberal … the more north and central you get the more conservative you get.

I’ve lived in TX my entire life. I have made several road trips across the south and it’s really shocking when you cross the TX border into Louisiana or Arkansas. You can tell those states have far less funding. And it gets worse the farther you drive! Mississippi and Alabama are so run-down and unattractive. Once you cross into Florida though, you know immediately because the highways and scenery get so much better. Love the South but if you want to move here I only recommend TX or FL.
All that oil and gas money makes a big difference, doesn't it? That's been true for more than a hundred years, If the rest of the South (excluding LA and OK) had it, things would be different.
Gulf shores Alabama is super clean and super super friendly and a awesome place.

The south will always be the south and I don't care who are what moves there. If all the southerners move to California it will still be the westcoast. Locations don't change becuase people from another region move there.
