#horror #iceberg #explained
Literally YELLED aloud at the Blair Witch take because she's in my opinion absolutely correct. So many horror movies are inexplicably terrified of ambiguity, which arguably is THE most important tool in horror fiction. You never see the Blair Witch, you never get any kind of explanation confirmed or denied, even things you think you might see or think you hear on camera are somewhat questionable. And that's exactly what makes the movie good! I will say that there's not a whole lot of rewatch value in my opinion, but experiencing it for the first time is so cool.
The lack of awareness of the difference between mockumentary and found footage will never cease to irritate me. Someone once tried to explain The Office as a found footage show…
exactly lol. Found footage is not gonna include edited montages and flashbacks and b-roll
No, that one's true. The final episode of the office had a vampire tearing through the entire cast, finishing with the camera crew, then text on a black background says the building has laid vacant ever since.
I think there’s a relevant broader category that includes both found footage horror and mockumentaries that fit certain criteria (predominantly live handheld footage of events rather than editing flourishes and composed interviews, incidental-seeming observation of the way being filmed changes how people behave, incidental inclusion of the crew as existing in the space, etc).
What We Do In The Shadows might have ended with the vampires eating the camera crew, but maybe I made that up.
I don't think the distinction is that important. Especially with how many Found Footage have "These People Were Making A Documentary" as their excuse for why everything got filmed. And then there's on OG like Cannibal Holocaust, which is a Mockumentary about Finding Footage that was recorded by people making a Documentary.
The Blair Witch Project is not only good, its one of the best examples of creating a consistent tone of dread for 80 minutes and one of the most effective endings ever.
The Blair Witch Project is my favorite because of its aim to create hyperealism in a film that has unrealistic elements, and I think it succeeded. Every bad found footage movie tends to not aim for realism so there's no reason for it to even be found footage and just makes the unrealistic things seem even more unrealistic.
That's a perfect review. I had the magical experience of believing it was an actual documentary. A group of us, on a break from a remote camp, with no TV. Went to the theatre. All we knew was what was on the poster "Three student filmmakers go into the woods, never return... and this footage was found a year later."
We were absolutely shaken to our core... We were intelligent reasonable people. The terror didnt just stay with us, it grew! Witches were maybe real.... We were going back to the woods in 2 days..... The next day, we found out it was fiction... and we all were so fucking relieved. What an experience.
I was just bored throughout the whole thing. I live in the woods tho so maybe I'm just used to the atmosphere
I agree, the original is great, probably the best found footage film? The sequel gets a lot of flack but I don't think it's all that bad. I would rather watch that over the reboot/remake which completely sucked.
@@Radiobuzz I thought the remake was well done... as a basic horror film.
Logan is saying that it is best example of consistent dread... Which is pretty well true.. I can think of "Mandy" as close... but, it wasn't the same stark suspence... and it broke as Cage gets even. Blair witch had no hero or optimism in any way... Hard to do.
Vegas resident here. Zak Bagans is indeed a charlatan but the Haunted Museum is pretty rad. Fun fact: I went there when it was relatively new and they had an entire room dedicated to Natalie Wood. Somehow the door was shut and locked and there was no way for our tour guide to let us in. Out of the shadows stepped Zak Bagans himself who in fact DID NOT have a key. Zak waited around with our tour group while they figured out a way to get the door open. I think it involved a drill? I'm not positive how they managed to open it as I was drunk at the time. 10/10 would get haunted again.
Clearly a ghost was holding the doorknob from the other side. GHOST PRANKZ
Now this is some good ol' fashioned meat n' potatoes Nyxfears content
I used to dream of days like these. Where we get a new nyx fears iceberg. I have weird dreams
I was having a rough day so thank you for dreaming this into life
@@samantha-elizabethemery3467you’re welcome
i think this is my favorite kind of your videos; not icebergs per se, but where you sit and talk about something and seem to have great time doing it. even when its silly stuff like this, your love for cinema and horror really shines. its just fun hearing you talk ^__^
I have loved many May essay style videos, but 'somewhat inebriated Christmas season Goosebumps round-up' is my all time fave
Watching your earlier icebergs was a checkpoint in my life I'll never forget, watching you put yourself through some truly harrowing shit, taking the long needed break etc. Seeing another iceberg gets me so hyped!
just watched we’re all going to the worlds fair on Saturday night stoned asf and was so shocked and happy to see u make a cameo in it omg
i did the same but i knew she was in it. sadly the highlight of the film
I was shocked too, I had to rewind the movie, I was like "do thine eyes deceive me?"
Holy cow, my favourite iceberg explainer is back explaining them icy bergs!
Those bergs sure are made of ice! And oh boy there's a lot that's above the water! I sure hope there's more underneath! Let's find out!!
ooo boy this berg is very much not tier listy, it tastes far more crunchy
Your disturbing movie ice berg has been my go to sleeping video for a year. The fact that this finds me at 2 am is incredible.
To me there's one reliable test of whether or not a Found Footage movie will be good: Does it tell the audience where they found this footage?
If no, the screenwriters didn't take the time to establish the setting and probably fucked up in other more obvious ways
If yes, the screenwriters took the time to set rules for their movie and stuck to them from beginning to end, and will probably hold up even on repeat viewings
Only thing I gotta say about it Cloverfield is that after watching it, my brother and I were playing a game-probably Bloody Roar-and my brother was acting tough, saying he could kick the Cloverfield monsters ass, only for our Gazebo to fly over the house and land in our backyard immediately after he said it. I’ve never seen a person get so pale so fast.
was there a tornado or something??
@@vapidvices8982 naw, just some high winds since it wasn’t staked into the ground
😮
@@themayhemcalling4099 Your brother would pull an Ultraman tho if it was ever the case, but he got scared by the wind easily so yeah.
Also, congrats on mentioning Bloody Roar, Konami doesn't want us to believe that franchise existed, but we do.
@@masterseal0418 I spent a summer mastering that game and wish I kept up with it
Hi May it's me, I'm the person who's never seen Paranormal Activity.
Hello fellow non-viewer!
The Fourth Kind is underrated asf... the scene where the abductee bolts up and starting screeching in Sumerian is one of the few horror movie scenes that genuinely scares me
Wait, you wrote fluids??? I just picked it up. Im loving it! Very cool to stumble upon the author like this
Tbh the best thing about cloverfield was not the movie itself, but the proto-ARG guerrilla marketing campaign that the movie had. For the time it was so intricate, interactive and immersive as little internet media was (or has been imho). It sucks that most of it has been lost to time and never archived
Loved the Cloverfield ARG, I’ve cited the thing in lectures, it was great, JJ should really just do marketing, he’s genuinely very good at that.
Even more lost to time is the guerrilla marketing Blair Witch had, including a whole faux documentary shown on…maybe the sci-fi channel? Like tears in rain etc.
This is absolutely true. I remember being a child when Cloverfield came out and the marketing for it was really effective and really fun. And then I saw the movie and I was like wow that was...underwhelming.
wake up babe new nyx video just dropped!!
is everybody asleep all the time?
Some of the most terrifying moments in my life have been laying awake in the pitch black of a tent while an unknown animal probes my camp. I’ve once awoke to the sound of repeated licking. it was absolutely paralyzing at first, but it was just a coyote licking dinner off of my lazy friend’s dirty bowl.
Wife and I started watching this with breakfast and daily brain meds, and the whole energy felt like we were waking up next to a good friend who was having BIG FEELINGS they needed to infodump on us about this whole genre, and we're here for it. Very very fun, trust
Also, shush, some of us WERE old enough to see Blair Witch in the theater when we were in high school!
I just got to see the Hellhouse LLC movies + your video about the first 3 a few weeks ago.
I will love the new series, I really like found footage! You're like THE ONE youtuber whose video I'll immediately watch when I see them released. It must be just the last stage of my migraine attack talking in me, but I just wanted to randomly thank you for everything, because I never tell people how much I appreciate them! You have no idea how much many of your videos meant to me, and I'm really really glad that you're here again with so many new videos.
35:23 I genuinely jumped out of my seat hearing you mention Bad Ben. My friend and I binged the first 5 movies over a year ago and I'm still trying to convince him to watch the rest with me. The longer we stall, the longer the series becomes....
Did you know the guy made a game to promote the film(s)? That's where I heard of Bad Ben. I have been wanting to see at least one of the films since Game Grumps played the game. It was hilarious.
I can’t believe I get to be alive to see another nyx iceberg
The Visit made me CRY with the laughter. He's my favourite comedy director.
What?! Nooooo..!
The diaper scene…
Remember how in Old there's a rapper named Mid-sized Sedan?
@@dullroar2673 indeedy. Many delights with that one
Troll hunters is one of the best found footage movies ever made
God I'm always rewatching your old iceberg and teir list videos and I am SO THRILLED to see you making a new iceberg series!!! :-D
U R so funny silly and I really love hearing your thoughts on things, and not just movies, either! I'd honestly love if you covered more freakass books, but obviously I'd still be utterly delighted just seeing ya make videos on whatever you want 😭🥺
I love your long intros its like catching up with a friend! Im also glad im not the only one who wasnt crazy about As Above So Below.
My two cents: Blair Witch Project is a good survival horror, but people expect it to be a supernatural horror.
Some people go in thinking they'll see a spooky witch come out and say "Boo!" That's doesn't happen and they have to watch a couple 20 somethings run around in the woods.
Me, personally, I love the woods. And there's some scary stuff that happens sometimes. So it resonated with me a lot. Just going on the slippery slope of anxiety of "I'm lost. What if they don't find me? What's going to happen with my family if I go missing? They're gonna find my body in a creep's shack Oh God Oh Freak."
The most significant contribution to my personal life that Chronicle made was being the topic of a Chronicle/Akira AMV I watched when I was a kid set to Numb by Linkin Park.
Whatever you’re imagining, it’s precisely that.
I got into Naruto because I watched an amv with it set to Bring Me to Life and my brain chemistry was forever changed
I'VE BECOME SO NUMB
@@darkninjafirefox peak 2007 experience tbh
Thank you for being the first UA-cam reviewer I've seen that said nice things about Grave Encounters. Can't wait until you hit the Koji Shiraishi section of the tierberg
Also very excited to see any Koji Shiraishi opinions as a fan of Noroi and Occult - Noroi in particular introduced me to found footage (arguably it may be more of a mockumentary due to the framing but idk, feels like it has elements of both genres?) I'm very on the fence about if I consider him conventionally 'good' as a director/writer overall, but there's something compelling to me about his earlier works.
I will say that Grave Encounters 2 has exactly one part that is worth watching, which is a section where (spoilers?) the main character from the first one turns out to be stuck in the bad place still and has lost his mind, and the evil ghost(?) decides to hover the camera to allow him to manically reenact moments from the first film.
I enjoy spooky movies but I'm not enough of a connoisseur to watch movies through a critical lens any better than "oooh spooky movie go bump in the night." I love hearing you ramble about anything and everything in the genre. Your passion and expertise is so obvious!
Your whole discussion of what made The Blair Witch Project work reminds me of why I love the book "The Haunting of Hill House" so much. How unnerving the story is from Eleanor's skewed perspective, and the uncertainty of how much is actually paranormal, and how much is a woman having a breakdown with friends in a spooky ass house. (And possibly being in lesbians with her roommate.) I hope someday someone makes an adaptation of it.
I did watch Apolo 18. I think I watched it at a time when, for some reason, I watched several found footage/mockumentary movies in a row (I remember one other being The Europa Report). As you described it, it was entertaining at best. It was sorta intriguing until they revealed it's space rock bugs and then there's only one place the movie can go.
Also, the Earthbound music heals my soul.
Real
Very spicy take alert!
Not only are mockumentaries not found footage, I would argue that even frequent "ackchully" for first found footage movie Cannibal Holocaust either isn't a found footage movie, or isn't the first
NYX FEARS MY BELOVED!!!!! need a few new horror movie recs so trust and believe I will be rewatching multiple times 😶✋
Broadcast is a weird one to say is the first because it breaks the formula with the ending.
It's funny how thanks to later found footage films, the plot of The Last Broadcast is MORE likely to surprise people now.
trans rights !
hell yea! !!
Trans Rights = Human Rights
yes
So real of you!
fuck off, came here for comments on the video, not this shit being shoved down my throat
I'm so ready for 11 videos! I'm glad you're not watching anything traumatizing, I love your movie takes!
Thank you Ms. Leitz. Very cool!
YESSSSSSS! MORE ICEBERGS!! LETS GOOO! THANK YOU MAY! Thank you for more icebergs!!! Let’s all hit this like the damn titanic and hit this HEAD ON and sink in for a great May Leitz ICEBERG VIDEO! 🖤
“There’s a lot more bad found footage than good found footage”
Undeniably true, but it’s also true for cinema as a whole.
Idk that seems a bit too cynical lmao
@@vitaminwater9662 Nah, it’s just numbers. Good films are more difficult to make than bad films, consequently there will always be more bad films than good. It’s not a statement on the decline of cinema or anything. It’s always been this way. And the same goes for effectively all creative media.
my brain does this weird thing where it fixates on media i don't particularly like or find interesting, but the familiar background noise is comforting to me for whatever reason. that's all to say thay I've seen apolo 18 at least four times and i remember none of it
i don't think i've seen a lot of found footage but never missed a nyx fears iceberg!
Found footage is my favorite horror subgenre. A lot of them are bad, but when you find that one gem, it's awesome
so hype youre back with another iceberg vid!! your other icebergs are my faves in the genre
its funny, i unironically have loved the concept of found footage, and indeed its one type of horror that i can usually be sold on pretty easily, and yet i have never seen a single paranormal activity
Same experience hat
i’m really excited about this series! two things. i saw the blair witch project in theaters in like 2017-18 because my local theater used to show classic horror films in October, it was the coolest thing. also, im usually really difficult to get to like a movie lol but i LOVED the Visit when it first came out. i haven’t seen it in years but it scared the shit out of me lmao
completely unrelated but I like the earthbound music. it fits the vibe of the video surprisingly well
There’s more bad found footage than good found footage, but that’s true of every genre ever, and also I think found footage at its best is some of the most potent filmmaking out there
"why, would you cut, in the middle of dialo-!" ur so funny. i love this vid
THE FUCKING RONALD REAGAN IMPRESSION. obsessed
+ extremely cool and pretty music+video????? i saw the disturbing ice berg a while ago and liked it so subscribed, just got this pushed to me by youtube and basically randomly watched it but damn what a good video!!! iam delighted. deeply swag video and im excited to get time to watch the other tiers
Im EXPLICITLY watching this video a second time because I NEEEEEEED movie recs. I am so glad you exist!!! ♡♡♡
so glad you're still around and making videos, i'll always be so excited to watch whatever you have to make
I literally just found your channel a few days ago and you treat us all to another banger, the cup runneth over 🙏
May's back on her bullshit, you love to see it!
nyx fears new iceberg??? the world is truly healing and i love found footage movies so this is truly for me thank u may
The new song slaps! RE Iceberg, I loved As Above So Below simply because the Paris Catacombs & the Japanese Suicide Forest are two places I'd never go IRL because the mere idea scares the piss outta me, so anything that's shot in them instantly gets me engaged enough to watch. I've watched youtube exploration videos of the catacombs because it fascinates me so much as a setting, but scares me too much to go into, so yeah a movie shot in there is also gonna keep me hooked. And the original Blair Witch is amazing, genuinely a fantastic atmosphere. Looking forward to the next part of the iceberg!
Girl I've been watching you since you were like... A whole ass literal other person. I'm so glad you're doing good, and if you're not you're doing a great job at pretending hell yeah. I'll watch anything you put out so keep having fun with it!!
This IS an interesting topic I want to watch Nyx Fears talk about, and I DO want her to eat food and not die
I did not know we were pretending to not like the Blair Witch Project. Even when the ads for it terrified me as a wee child, I knew I was a fan.
I LOVE MAY LEITZ I LOVE WHEN SHE POSTS VIDEOS ON UA-cam
You make me feel like I could start my own youtube channel and actually not suck at it when you put out a video like this, Nyx. Thank you for that.
i had only ever heard complaints about blair witch but i found it very good and scary! spooked me for the rest of the day
A new iceberg series?!?!! From May!!??!!?! On MY UA-cam home page!!!!!! YES PLEASE!!!! And I get to binge watch all of her past videos while waiting for the next episode!!!!!!!
I just love hearing/watching you get so passionate about film and cinema. Keep making icebergs and tier videos, you really shine in this medium.
Thank you for making me feel a little better about As Above So Below. I mean, it's fine, but the amount of praise this movie gets always makes me feel like I'm missing something.
I'm so stoked for level 2 of the iceberg. There are some big hitters in there that I'm excited to hear you talk about.
I know I commented on the music video when you posted it on your music channel, but I love this song.
the first friend I made in high school loved to show me scenes from unfriended. he unironically loved it. I miss that guy
Great vid, got whiplash at the mention of The Visit. This movie is something I hadnt thought of for years and wish to not think about for many years to come 🔥
hearing the best person ever talk abt cloverfield made me so happy thank you for another amazing video!
I’m glad to see you in better spirits than the last iceberg ❤️ keep up the great work!
I love listening to your thought process on any form of media, May!! You're so fun and articulate with just the right amount of funny side tangents. Thank u for the fun video!!!
I don't know why YT unsubscribed me so I rectified that. I LOVE your content, you always make me happy, yes it's fun!!
I’m back for the like 9th time thank you for the hours of entertainment ❤
Yay! I know what I'm doing for the next 55 minutes.
BTW, Bealtaine a chara, are you going to do something on the new Jane Shoenbrun film I Saw The TV Glow? I remember you'd a wee cameo in the last one. Personally I loved both of them and thought the new one was a good step up, i think i got the most of it but I also feel like certain elements went over my head. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Also just nice to see you posting again on the regular. I started getting into this channel over lockdown and binged my way through loads of it back then, it was a real tonic through hard times XOXO
I’m just gonna keep spamming as I watch. Get that engagement going. Gonna hard disagree on Chernobyl Diaries, it was absolute cock cheese. On its own, the film was mediocre, but the advertising campaign made it look really interesting and genuinely something different. Then you see it and it’s the most bog standard monsters in the woods found footage schlock.
I'm sorry but "cock cheese" sounds like a compliment

Cannot wait for the bottom few tiers of this waste bin. Genuinely excited!
I know this list is bound to be missing some things but I stood real close to my TV and didn't spot Noroi or any other Shiriashi movies on this list and that is a shame (I really recommend all of Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi!, I had a lot of fun with the series even though it takes a few entries to really get going)
ANYWAY, great video as always, looking forward to the rest of it!
May's iceberg videos are top tier in my book. Thanks for making them! 😀
I'm a huge fan of the Found Footage genre and I got so excited when I saw BAD BEN on the iceberg - I unironically love those silly ass films. Really enjoying your reviews and looking forward to more as we travel deeper and deeper! (Also EarthBound music, my beloved!

I love this addition of the piano 😅 Hitting those odd few notes really tickled me
I honestly could listen to you talk about individual movies for hours, May
also, looking real good!
This comment is a sacrifice to the algorithm gods. Don’t really know what else to say other than I love your content. I don’t like found footage and I haven’t seen like any of these movies but I’m watching the iceberg because I love to hear you talk about movies I haven’t seen.
I absolutely cannot watch found footage for personal reasons so this is gonna be The Ice Berg Series for me!! Thank you May! I am going to hear about so many movies!
i love listening to you talk about movies! excited for whenever zero day shows up
nevermind its not on it LOL
I've always enjoyed As Above So Below simply because it's whole thing is medieval horror, which I've never seen any other modern movie do. Whether that was executed well is debatable, but it's unique and I think it deserves credit for that.
I do think it’s fun and I really appreciate it when you do icebergs because most UA-camrs who make these videos are morons who can’t do proper research, write good scripts, or even sometimes pronounce words correctly. Some of them even just run the topics through ChatGPT and read the output verbatim without understanding what they’re reading. So thanks for making GOOD iceberg videos!
When I tell you I almost threw up because I was so excited to watch this video and see you post
You're looking awesome!! I love all the new content! Can't wait to read your other books!
Thanks for the warning about the haunted museum in Vegas! I’m going there soon and was absolutely going visit, but I might not now. I’ve been looking forward to going to Vegas for a long time and I don’t want any bad luck messing it up
