Hi, so I’m decently experienced with the M50 after carrying it a while. Yes the valves on the side are supposed to seal as soon as a filter becomes unlatched, so you should be safe changing filters one at a time without holding your breath in an NBC environment. The valves on yours look different than the opaque white valves I’ve seen on US masks. It is certainly possible they’ve just been damaged, as it is common for soldiers to damage or loose the valves if they can’t keep themselves from messing with them. They make at least the clear kind of over lens but I believe there is a UV/sunglasses lens too. The mask is designed (like the m40) to be put on and adjusted to your head, except for the lowest two straps, then the harness flipped over the lens to store it. To don it, you hold it to your face and flip the harness over, keeping the seal, then tighten the two straps. Thanks for the video, if you don’t read this my feelings won’t be hurt
@@factcheck1776 I would guess it's due to a lack of oxygen in those areas as fires usually burn through a lot of oxygen, and might start making Carbon Monoxide
Hey @Weaponsandstuff93! Love the channel. Anyways I’m in the US Military and I love the M50. The valves when you take the filters off are supposed to be self sealing and the blue indication on the filters indicates that they are unserviceable. Also best way to get the filters on are to align the raised rectangle on the edge of the filter with the two notches on the mask and then turn the filter towards you to align the single notch with the rectangle. Cheers.
ive done training with the m50/fm50 (i have no clue tbh only just found out what its called) but the cheek valves were supposed to close after you take off the filter (ours where a white opaque) and the filters didnt have the bulb
@@Weaponsandstuff93 apparently if the seals are clear, they've been known to have a problem where if the mask is stored with the filters on for too long they get unfold into the open position by default. This is REALLY late, but I have one of these masks, and it's one of the most comfortable masks in my collection! The only other mask that even comes close to being as comfortable is the MCU-2P. Funny story as to how I got my M50: I bought it at a military collectors expo for $20. (The guy didn't know what he was selling because it does work.)
Not really sure, They cost around £40 in the UK which is why I have never bought one, I have the older version of the mask not in 40mm and it's a good quality mask otherwise.
Hey buddy, just some info. The color code indicator is to see if the filter has had water introduced to it. That's just what I've been taught in the military. If I remember correctly the dot will turn red if there has been exposure to water.
Interesting from what I've read, white is good, blue means expired, but that simply works on exposure to air and other chemicals so will always go blue before the filter really expires.
Blue means filters are bad. For training use being exposed to CS gas etc. they'll typically go like 3 years before they gotta be switched out. they come in a thick vacuum sealed bag that if you keep sealed will last a very long time I imagine. And yeah the issued ones seal if you take off both filters. Designed to be changed one at a time if they go bad so you can change them out relatively safely. CBRN training incorporates filter changes under stress in CS gas chamber. For donning the harness is wrapped around the front of the mask with lower straps loose. So you press it against your face throw the harness over your head, tighten lower straps, then you clear the mask by covering outtake valve on front and blowing air inside the mask through the filters. lastly cover filters to check seal.
I also have a m50 and the transparent self-sealing valves were defective, when the siltri remained up for a long time they do not close, then they replaced them with the white valves that are more recent, the problem is to find them, I am in Italy and it was very difficult to find the mask
Do you know where I might be able to get my hands on an Avon C50 without paying a stupid price? The M50 is less attractive for me as I dont want to have to spend money on proprietary filters
КГБ agent same I also want a m40 which I might get because my uncle is in charge of gas masks in the national guard base near me and they just got m50 so the m40s are going surplus
Yeah been looking for one for years, was only recently I saw a load on UK eBay with reasonable starting bids on them as opposed to several hundred pounds, will have to try and order some replacement valves for the self sealing bit though.
So with other masks if you take the filters off you can still breath though it it just won’t be filtered. With the m50 with no filters it completely seals?
@@Weaponsandstuff93 Yeah. The filter should still be fine. Because it's a military issued item that could be used in a life or death scenario, the indicator has to be extra sensitive so that the contractor covers their ass from lawsuits.
I have a small question, are gas masks able to filter radioactive particles safely? I ask this because in Metro 2033 You're able to go up on the surface and be able to filter radioactive particles.
A standard FFP3 filter (N99 for U.S.) will filter radioactive particulates. But not stop your skin/ clothes from being contaminated. As far as game play goes, that's rather realistic. However as far as irradiation goes, Beta and Gamma radiation will pass through the mask without issue.
