  • In this episode I'm explaining how I replaced the worn out two-piece propeller drive shaft center support bearing.
    I had some bad luck with a bearing on the yolk, but luckily I could tackle a premature failure by doing so.
    But I also got some good luck since the old bearing came of without to much hassle. That's also nice for a change!

    Used your video to make sure the bearings orientation was correct. Worked like a charm. Thank you.

    FYI, the dust protector, aka slinger, aka flinger that was loose, cut off and tossed is not available as a replacement part. It's actually part of the driveshaft, and is installed at the driveshaft factory.
    It's purpose is to fling off water, mud and other debri from the driveshaft and deflect flying debri like gravel and sand. It protects and extends the life of the support bearing.
    You can get by without it. The bearing will likely last the rest of the life of the used vehicle if it's not driven in extreme adverse conditions often.

    Damn I just had to cut my bearing off. Glad I saw your video or I might not have had the brave to do it. Also I saved the old bearing ring incase it helps me install the new bearing.

    the bearing facing the correct directing is always the hardest part, and EVERY one of these videos I've watched, they forget the "female" (the smooth metal shiny end) came out of the transmission. That is the front of the truck. The male end, or the exposed gear part is facing the rear diff. I put mine on wrong because I was only listening to what one of these videos were saying, not looking at the screen much.

    So . . . the big rubber donut side goes which direction (spline gear or u-joint end)? There were so many "wrong" and "nope" captions that I'm not sure how it goes. My finale assessment is that the rubber donut faces the spline gear that goes inside the rear driveshaft . . . is that correct?

    • @gmcminitruck
      @gmcminitruck  2 роки тому +1

      Indeed, the rubber donut goes in the direction of the spline gear, see 14:14

      @@gmcminitruck Thanks for the quick response. I'm putting mine on today or tomorrow on my '91 Suburban (it looks exactly the same as the Sonoma). Too bad you destroyed the "Slinger" . . . I destroyed mine also. You have to in order to be able to get the bearing off if you don't have a press or puller . . . it's in the way.

      I’m in the same boat. The cap that screwed the two pieces together. You used the universal “o” ring under said cap. I assume you ended up cutting off the old ring? I am afraid to cut it, the I amuse that cap just slides off?
