    The Dodge Challenger Demon 170 resets the benchmark for drag racing performance for production cars. 0-60 in 1.66 seconds, a quarter mile time of 8.91 seconds, and it's capable of accelerating above 2 g's!! The absolutely bonkers Demon is powered by a 6.2L V8 engine, which has a 3.0L supercharger, good for 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb-ft of torque when running on E85 fuel.
    Unfortunately, it's not all good news, as the 0-60 time isn't quite as good as Dodge claims, if you're the type of person that believes a 0-60 starts at 0 mph. The video will highlight all the details, and the many disclaimers that go along with this 0-60 time, as well as what the real 0-60 time is. In addition, we'll look at how important the vehicle's center of gravity is, and analyze the Demon in several different real world scenarios to discuss what the 0-60 times might be under various conditions. Regardless of any nonsense, the Dodge Demon 170 is genuinely an incredible feat of engineering. Hat's off to Dodge!

      I like white Dodge is doing. If you order it from the factory you will only be sticker price. If you wait and purchase it off of a dealer lot there is no telling how much the market will be

      Funny thing is... the "170" designation was the lowest level Dodge Dart in the mid 1960's: 101 Hp, 170 CI slant six, rubber floor mats, etc 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Ya gotta give me credit, *not once* in the video did I say "when it comes to the Dodge Demon's 0-60, the Devil's in the details."
    Also, I didn't get into 1/4 mile, but the Demon lays down a wicked number, pretty crazy for RWD. Here's some stats for additional context:
    *1/4 Mile Times:*
    Demon on Prepped Surface - 8.91sec @ 151.17 mph (Dodge)
    Plaid on Prepped Surface - 9.25 @ 152.6 mph (Motor Trend)
    Plaid on Unprepped Asphalt - 9.34 @ 152.2 mph (Motor Trend)

      @@tyronehunter7330 No, Motor Trend, Car & Driver, Road & Track, they all use rollout (the practice of deleting the first foot). Often they at least disclose how much time this was, but not always. It's a bummer!

      @@vl3005 Plaid just had a better top end, it’s accelerating harder than the demon 170 at higher speeds. The demon 170 launches a lot harder than the plaid because it’s setup to be a drag car and dodge did a really good job with the suspension and launching. The plaid could have a better top end because it’s putting down more power compared to weight or just because it has better aerodynamics (Tesla model s has really good aerodynamics to extend range). So from a roll the Tesla plaid would beat the demon, and on the street the plaid would beat the demon. But on the drag strip where the demon can utilize it’s great launch it will win

    Great video and perfect timing. My son is about to turn 16 and he needs a car. I figure a 0-60 time of 19.5 seconds will keep him safe in the winter. 😀

      Drove a drivers ed car once that shook violently and rattled itself to death at exactly 60 mph. Get him one of those and you will keep him out of both kinds of trouble a car can bring at that age.

      Haha, assuming the standard Hellcat fuel tank size of 18.5 gallons, and max fuel flow rate possible at 164 gallons per hour, 18.5/164*60 = 6.77 minutes to empty the tank!

    Best part for me, by far, is always the inclusion of the real-world scenarios and conditions to show what people are likely to see. Of course all-wheel drive should have the traction advantage given the other circumstances and the end of the video does a fantastic job of stripping away the "car guy" marketing hype to show what you are really paying for. Love it!

      EV’s will be a non factor in a decade. It will all be hydrogen. EV’s are the compact florescent bulbs of the auto industry. They are too dangerous in accidents and too heavy for our existing infrastructure.

    One of my favourite UA-camrs (you) once did a video on the limit of tires and how it applies to 0-60 times, but now I can't find it. Did I dream it? Most of my dreams are Engineering Explained themed these days. It's a blessing and a curse.
    I know from my work that while braking isn't a perfect inverse of traction, especially in RWD vehicles, there are very few (perhaps zero) road legal tires which can sustain 2g of braking on an unprepared surface. I know the tires used literally have the word street in the name (Mickey Thompson ET Street R) but really. Streetable?

    Setting up the rear suspension to separate on the initial launch (anti-squat) increases the rear tire down force while the rear of the car is rising, allowing more acceleration during the critical 1st second or so of the run.

    Not an engineer here. I found the CG description fascinating. Maybe sometime you can do a video describing this as it regards race cars. I think for handling you want as low a CG as you can get away with. But maybe for accelerating out of corners you’d like some way to have the CG raised a bit just for those few moments. Also, is this the kind of thinking behind MotoGP bikes’ hi-tech start assistance features where the bike is “cocked” down at the front for launch?

      Yeah, for circuit racing, you pretty much always want the CG as low as possible. This limits load transfer, which generally speaking is a good thing, because you have more grip (for braking/turning, and if AWD, accelerating as well) if you have the weight of the car as evenly distributed as possible.

      ​@@EngineeringExplained i was wondering when calculating max g force a car can accelerate why does tire width not factor in? Also does the weight of the vehicle not make it harder because if inertia holding them back? Or does the slightly better rear weight bias of heavy cars counter that.

      ​@@derekmaxwell8164 In terms of tyre width, it's basically just that some people with lots of different tyres tried it at some point and found that there is no consistent relation between width and grip.
      As far as more weight is concerned, it means more force pushing the tyres down --> more maximum friction force is available. Weight is proportional to mass - as long as you stay on planet Earth. Available friction force increases with weight (directly proportionally), and acceleration is the ratio of force to mass, so changing mass does not change your maximum acceleration - as long as your car has enough power to move all that mass at maximum acceleration.

      @@sebastianskwarczynski2435 so the extra friction cancels out the extra inertia but i watch alot of drag racing and light cars like 2500lbs or less almost always 60 ft way better than cars over 3500lbs but are still slower and run slower trap speeds. But im thinking maybe that's just cause of the short wheel base.

    Several decades ago, I had a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am, black with a T-top and the gold screaming Eagle on the hood, Smokey and the Bandit limited edition. It had a 400 cubic inch Pontiac V8. On regular street tires and on un-prepped plain concrete pavement, it had a 0 to 60 time of about six seconds. The car looked faster than it really was. Still, it was a cool car and I wish I still had it today.
    The point to all of the above is that there was a time when it was considered not possible to accelerate or corner at more than 1G because it anything greater than 1G the tires would lose grip.

      That was mostly true as far as I know.
      The reason a modern hot hatch can track as fast as supercars of the late 90s and early 2000s is down to the tires mostly but aero and drag factor in as well...look at the width of the Diablo's rear tires.
      Tires are the unsung heros of modern fast cars.

      Probably not quite that fast, more like 7+ seconds, I know because I could beat my friends T/A in my 1983 Mustang GT. Amazing to think those big V8s were making less than 200hp when compared to today's engines. Nevertheless, they were fast back in the day when average cars made 90 hp and took 14 seconds to get to 60mph. Blew my mind when I first went from a 90hp 2.3 liter Mustang to my GT with 175hp (though I would later put headers and dual exhaust with no Cats for probably another 25hp).

My first car was an 84 black fire bird v6 and my 2nd car was a 86 t top all black v8 crap 305 86 trans am and my 3rd was an 93 v8 lt1 trans am that one lived the other two last just say I was young and my dad was a very very understanding man slod the 93 to go to school but out of them Id like to have the 86 back and put a new ls type 6.0 in it with a lot of suspension

    When Leno was reviewing this car, Kuniskis told him they decided to use the rollout time as it has become the industry standard. I guess they don't feel the need to mention it because it is assumed. It does make it a bit misleading unless they come out and say that they are now using that standard since they said before that it shouldn't be used.

    Love the Demon car graphic for the CG explanation, makes a difference. Always enjoy the videos and this was great going in depth on the CG and the importance for acceleration in a RWD car.

    they dismissed 0-60 with rollout when that couldn't beat Tesla but now that the have the quickest 0-60 they use the "industry standard"
    It's not the most relevant number but as long as almost everyone uses the same metrics, and since it's the number measured on a drag strip, i'I think it's ok.
    I guess the rollout also depends where you stop between the sensors anyway

    Does this mean that the racetracks in my area will allow it to compete with Tesla again? Except by prior agreement, they currently force Tesla to stay in their own class because a lot of people who paid a lot of money for "insane engineering" got tired of losing to the family sedan.

      @@SLOCLMBR I don’t own a Tesla, but I do think it’s been amusing to see people cop such an attitude when a technology comes out that results in a quiet family sedan displacing their ultimate muscle cars at the finish line over and over. I grew up going to the track and the talk was all about the engineering and squeezing every drop from the available components, but it’s funny how fast that changes when there’s little that hurt bravado / macho chest-puffing can do other than be embittered and exclude those with a different, non-traditional American engineering instead of being proud of it.

      @@ReflectedMiles tesla owners are the simps of the car world.. besides, in 20 years, nobody will be excited to find a tesla in a barn.. it's like a cell phone.. overpriced, unnecessary, and it's designed to be obsolete in 3 years.. notice how we haven't heard or seen much about the tesla semi since it was delivered to Pepsi? My guess is that it doesn't live up to the claimed performance

    The thing you're missing in this analysis is the percent Anti-squat built into the rear suspension. The height of the fore-aft instant center of the rear suspension with respect to the height of the vehicle CG determines the anti-squat percentage.

      They make the rear dampers intentionally stiff during a launch so that squat is minimal.

      You are missing a point here mr Fenske. Look up anti-squat in the world of drag racing, in short it’s converting horsepower into traction. You can make the car pound the tires in to the road with more force than the weight of the car would indicate. Would love to hear you pick this drag racing theory apart. 👍

    Remember when Dodge claimed a 1/4 mile of 9.65 for the original Demon and no one could hit better than a 10.2? I'll believe the hype when I see it!

      @@ericship8383 the plaids 109k right now. My local dodge dealer told me their demon 170 allocations start at 100k over msrp.
      Make that down now to 104k. Come on tesla and being on the plaid+😀

    The only caveat I'd say is that if basically everyone states their 0-60 with rollout, then that is what I'd assume for any 0-60 unless it says otherwise.
    It's only "unfair" when there are "secret" factors that are different from common. IE, if they did their test on a 5 degree downward slope and didn't bother to mention it.

      It should still be stated with an asterisk or something even it's the standard used by most companies. Nothing would stop a company from excluding more than a foot of rollout if they could just let people assume what they meant in their 0-60 times.

      @@lanceareadbhar Well that is exactly what I was saying. In your example the "secret" factor is that they are using a non-standard rollout of greater than 1 foot and I'm suggesting that this would be in the "unfair" bucket.
      When we look at world records for running, we assume that the runner did it wearing sneakers of some sort. Since, that is the normal case, no reason to state it. Now when Abebe Bikila set a marathon record while not wearing shoes, since that was out of the ordinary, it is something we might call out.

    I suspect 8.91 even on a prepped surface is being generous. Pretty much on a perfect prep track with perfect DA and perfect track/air temps. There is a reason RWD is the choice for nearly all drag cars, the weight transfer to the rear tires using suspension and tire setups that favor this configuration make it the most viable to low timeslips in most cases.

      So why can an awd even heavier evs like the aspark owl, Batista and rimac nevera out accelerate this thing on regular st legal tires and on unprepped surfaces? Both do 1.6-1.7s true 0-60mph on any surface on st tires.
      And then there's the mcmurty speirling ev doing 1.4s on an unprepped surface. The wrc cars can do 0-60mph in 1.3s on all season tires. 😀

      RWD is the choice in drag racing for reasons that primarily lie in the class restrictions and simplicity, not because it's superior. Yes, weight transfer is to the rear but that doesn't negate the benefit of all four wheels driving forward instead of two. I haven't read my NHRA rule book in regards to various classes in a few years now, but about the only place you can run AWD is in bracket racing where you can run just about whatever you have and what you run isn't so important as how fast (time bracket) you run. Something I've been doing for over 40 years.

    Impressive machine. Rollout is standard everywhere. These Demon 170 performances numbers are incredible hard to reproduce- the Tesla PLAID is super consistent on a prepped drag strip-Speaking from experience.

      I do think that 0-60 test be conducted on a dry prepped drag strip, with good DA and be done with Roll Out. It’s the only way to be even somewhat consistent. Car and Driver and the rest of automotive magazines are incredibly dishonest in everything they say and do

      Hooligan has a plaid that is the test car, if you can beat their plaid Tesla they let you race their real car...which btw is a mustang with awd and Honda 4 banger and huge turbos that does the 1/4 in 7.9 sec

    I think you are still being too nice if anything. The previous marketing campaign for the last Demon was one of the most misleading ever as to what you will actually get:
    Claim - 9.6s 1/4 mile.
    Reality - ~12s 1/4 mile on real roads with normal tires.
    And their supercharged engine is extremely sensitive to conditions as well and pulls power in like 80% of cases.
    I don't really see much cool engineering. The low times are all result of them using a drag radial tire on a prepped surface, it has almost nothing to do with the car itself. In fact, we know this because you can go and look up any number of cars doing similar times on a drag strip with radials on. This really is just them using a method to get acceleration times that nobody else in the industry uses and then claiming victory. No clue if those times are actually even that good because there are no production cars to compare to.

    The rear suspension in modern drag cars is actually forced downward 👇🏼 from the torque going to the wheels. This gives incredible bite on the road in the launch and lessens as weight transfer comes into play. The torque is trying to pick up the back of the car at the same time rotational inertia is fighting against the forward rotation of the tires. Essentially rotating the car backwards against the forward rotation of the tires.

    Yes, on a perfect, prepped surface, with warm tires, and rollout, you might get a 1.6 to 60 three times out of ten, in reality, it means spinning tires constantly on the street and lots of spent fuel while Tesla Model S Plaids blast past you.

    If anything, this makes me more impressed by Tesla coming out of nowhere with a 1k hp car and then dodge releases their fastest car yet, and it barely surpasses the Tesla. Plus, all Tesla has to do to beat the dodge demon 170, is release an update that unlocks a few more horsepower and bam.
