Here is the "Behind the Scenes" travel log of our last living history event of May 2024. This is a private, invite only camp full of friends, fellowship and some fun competition.
This year the match was a classic "Mountain Man" match with flintlocks, tomahawks, trap setting, fire starting and more.

Thank you Ethan for what you do to bring us along with you. You have made me love muzzleloaders even more now. Keep ye powder dry.
Ethan your vids are almost as much fun as being in camp👍
Love the video, makes me homesick for my revwar reenacting days. My health doesn't really permit that anymore I just stick to building guns now.
Ethan, sorry to hear that the old grey mare threw a shoe on your way home.
I wish you would have been at camp Friday, I was one of the few that got to run the course by using a canoe down the creek into camp for the fire starting/ ball casting and shooting finish. The rain we had Friday evening changed the plan and made the creek a little bit dangerous. It was very good to see you out there again though
Someday I’ll be down there longer! One of my favorite events
Thanks for sharing your experience and your tips on some of the necessary gear (ladle, mold, lead) and organization. I have been over-filling my flint wallet and its time to have a space for everything and everything in its place. Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Ethan. Your regalia is really taking shape
Thank you! Lots of hard work this year
I need to find this here in Oregon!
Looks like a great time, worth the drive for sure. Bonus is you found your tire problem and you weren't in rush hour traffic on the interstate!
Amen! I’d rather be changing it on an old road than the interstate
I do carry a bar of soap that i use as needed
Still do a big wash at home
Keep the videos coming!
Would love to see what all is being cooked for the pot lucks.
I was put in mind of Townsend, I don’t recall if it was James or Jon on a motor scooter in outfit pumping gas
Get you a 1/2inch battery impact and cut slots in a socket to fit your Jack and also one to fit your lug nuts
Will be a must have for trips after this
Every mountain man should know how to change horse shoes ! You did. Good job.
Love it. Thank you for taking me down Memory Lane.
Thank you.
always enjoy your videos , i hope they are period correct crocks your wearing with your hunting shirt LoL
This is the best title of all your videos.
Thanks dude
Ethan, great job again .thanks. Welcome to the club, frats, waterpump, and starter. Next time out, bring a small toolbox along . A breakerbar works a lot better on the lug nuts. If you go out, have fun and throw some lead down range . Don't miss out. Be safe, thanks again.
I definitely agree on keeping a warm hat around, go into mountain country and it may be in the 80's in the day, and 40's after the sun goes down. A warm head cover goes a long way to keeping you happy.
Especially with “limited” hair up there like I have 😉
At least you didn't have to shot your horse. Glad it was the rear tire. Good video.
Bummer that the "Iron Mare" went lame. At least you had a great time at the event. That was always what they told me about hawk handles. Can't say it really aided my throwing. I was good when I practiced a lot. Last time I tried to throw hawks...after a long lull, I was GREAT at breaking handles!
Haha! Gotta keep the handle companies in business
One tip, Carry a full sized spare. Figure out how to fit it in your car, but carry a full sized spare.
Yep. It’s definitely something this car needs.
Can you sew and oil/wax a cotton dry bag that will survive the dunking? Three are four folds on the top should keep the opening dry, but I'm not sure about the seams.
Yes, several folks have done that with success
I enjoy your videos , very interesting , I do have a question .What is the best practice for care on a browned barrel , just oil , I have heard some use light coat of wax . do you have any advise. thanks
I use oil, I’ve not used wax much myself
Browning is just induced patina, which is just oiled rust. So wiping with oil is how you would maintain it
I like the mountain man run much better than the timing of making a fire and the people get all gamey by using special cloth for their char cloth.
I think vinegar is a historically correct way to sanitize your dishes after, or in substitution if in a hurry.
Try wood ash paste made from your Fire and Water. Then rinse with clean water. Period correct for long hunter or mountain man or revolutionary war and civil war reenactors.
You didn't shoot what the heck Ethan next time shoot😂😂❤
Hey, sometimes it get caught up talking 🤣
I'm curious as to where you find your round ball molds, I can find modern molds, but I'm having a difficult time with finding a period correct
(1700s to 1800s) 54-caliber mold.
(.530 to .535)
Google bag molds
@WilliamSims-yf5wq
Thanks for the information.
I found Callahan rifles and Acouterments.
They are located somewhere in Missouri, my home state (living in Virginia at this time) they have what I was looking for.
Has anyone ordered their products?
I was just wondering about the quality of the items they are selling.
Larry Callahan out of Missouri
Larry is top notch. I have several of his molds.
@ILoveMuzzleloading
Thanks to everyone who replied, "I will be ordering one tomorrow, possibly two, and one of his ladles.
Please tell us about your eyeglasses (prescription/sourcing). Thanks!
Yep, got it on the way
Where was this event?
This is a small private camp.
