Teaching since 1970 and still loving it. Love in face better than online. Use online for snow days and when mom has a migraine. 😅

I teach online still (violin, viola, and piano)-- for me, biggest con is you can't play at same time (duets, etc). Biggest pro is much easier to deal with difficult students/parents 😅 As an introvert who hates conflict, I felt such relief and power when I could just "end meeting" lol. And yes comfy pants for the win!

You're right about playing at the same time! There's a platform called RockOutLoud that claims you can play duets..but I couldn't quite get it to work with my students. I can relate to the introvert thing though--just having humans in my home drains my energy. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Hi after taking lessons for more than a year I’ve decided to pull the plug and switch to online learning. My real teacher was working by the books and no real tips to help me improving my piano playing. After going through two books, piano lesson book level 1B and celebration series level 1 that was it for me! Found a more user friendly lesson online that I’m still working on today. The key thing is to have a fun lesson with popular songs that I love and tips to make the learning experience easier

Sorry you had that experience with your teacher. I'm glad you found a better way! Would you say that the change of platform made the difference? Or switching teachers? Or both!

@@TheTattooedPianoTeacher thanks for your reply! My virtual teacher is an active musician playing in a band that had a program called La pianotheque. Tried the free intros and liked her way of teaching and bought the program!I’m still the early stages of it.30 modules that are divided into about 10 lessons each.To give an example one lesson involves playing 5ths on the right hand and example used is the intro of high hopes by Pink Floyd!

I love being able to use zoom lessons as backup, but never as the only way. Parents also appreciate being able to use zoom when someone isn’t feeling well. I love not getting coughed and sneezed on like in the ‘old days’.

It is great to have that option! I remember years ago a slightly-ill student suggested a Skype lesson...I had NEVER thought about it before. I agreed to it as a one-time solution. Now it's like, the normal backup plan! Thanks for sharing 💙

Teaching since 1997 and still absolutely love it. Great topic. I am one of those crazy ones that adores teaching online! ;)

I love that my online students show up having practiced, as they login early and practice before they start instead of driving and waiting in the waiting room!

You have me beat! That's so interesting to hear your perspective and experience with students being prepared. I never thought about that...they do their warming up right before the lesson begins! Brilliant. You teach both online and in-person, correct?

Yes! I 100% agree that there's an advantage at seeing the students setup at home (and how they sit etc.). Plus, I like getting to know the environment they're practicing in and helps me understand. Though, I learned Zoom was a nightmare for piano lessons (mostly because young and older students struggle with the settings etc)..so I have decided to ditch Zoom because of that. Personally, I disagree with the in-person being better than online, though I totally understand what you're saying. But I have a few students I've never met in-person and I feel so close to them! I find online piano lessons are better for the student because of my camera setup with the camera and digital lights displaying on the screen (not to mention all the fun games!!). But yes, I think this is totally a preference teacher-by-teacher and we truly need teachers who are willing to do both. P.S. I love your channels name! It caught me eye and I had to watch your video to see what you're about. I've subscribed. Love your vibe in your video.

I was hoping to hear from some teachers who really make online lessons work and love them! So, since ditching Zoom, what do you use now as a video platform? Thank you for sharing your experience!! 💙

I use FaceTime and Skype. No need to fickle with the audios for either platforms. It's true that zoom has more options but it's only great for people who are techy (not great for kids or adults students/parents who are not). I'd rather just "call and go" then having to describe how to "fix it". @@TheTattooedPianoTeacher

Hi there! Fellow TpT seller and UA-camr here! Love your channel! It’s inspired me to get back into piano!
I taught asynchronous voice during covid. If you do this, what helped me was using Google Classroom where I could post lessons and assignments and have them submit through this. You could also probably just use a drive.
What it consisted of was me creating part tracks, warm up tracks, and I had them record while playing my video, so I left space for them to make recordings. That way they went through the sequence as I wanted them too. I created diction and practice tracks. And I used my iPad. I would follow along with their video, make notes and corrections to the music, and send a pdf it back to them with written corrections along with recorded feedback. You will need to change this for piano of course.
Cons: Big lag between feedback and change so difficult to see if that feedback was the best way to put it.
Pros: Cut down on my time per lesson. I also included some synchronous coachings… maybe you could do this once per month, and then give them a month at a time plan? I’m happy to brainstorm this with you if you have questions. Just some ideas! Happy teaching!

Hey fellow TPTer/musician! Glad to have you here!
I've thought about Google Classroom as an option everyone is familiar with, so that is validating to hear from someone who has used it for this. I like the idea of notating right on the sheet music. I hadn't considered giving bigger assignments/bigger blocks of time, but I suppose that does make sense given the "sending back and forth" situation.
I'm thinking about experimenting this summer with a couple of students so I may just take you up on that offer! Thank you, New YT Friend! 💙
