This video is gold! Such good advice for teachers! I am always a bit dismayed at how negative piano teachers seem to be about transfer students. And I don't like our tendency to criticize the previous teacher based on a transfer student's performance. Every student is a work in progress, and we don't truly know the progress that was made by the previous teacher. ❤

Perfectly said! This video was inspired by observing a less-than-successful first lesson taught by another teacher that ended in tears :( What a privilege and a burden us teachers have to present the JOY of music in an inviting way. Thank you! 🩵🩵

Do all of your students use method books? Up to what level? My son uses Sukuzi books for his violin lessons (and doesn’t love them), but has never used method books in his piano lessons.

Every teacher is a little different and I know some prefer not to use method books. Personally, I use method books in tandem with my own materials and students' personal choice projects. Some students really benefit from the structure and logical lesson plans of a method book all the way through their high school years, while others will be ready to ditch the method books after a few years--so it really varies from student to student! But I would say I like to keep at least the main lesson book going until we get to the intermediate level (which would be about Level 4 in the Faber Piano Adventures series) so I feel confident we haven't missed any crucial concepts or skills.
