I feel that this is an EXTREMELY difficult subject to talk about right after an event because try as you may -- it comes off as a "I told you so" message and you inevitably descend into the frey of people who hate streaming. What we SHOULD be saying is "hey Tidal, you've messed up, when are you going to offer a offline version for DJ's now that your credibility is compromised?". That's the conversation we should be having.
I stream all the time and am a big proponent of it. If you listened to the whole video it would have been pretty clear. It only comes off as I told you so if you’re in your feelings. However, speaking of tidal, or any service, you want to place blame on a company that never promised what you’re asking for. That’s why you plan and prepare for any issues that may arise.
@@ClevelandTerry that's a pretty lame response. Beatport offers an offline locker while Tidal doesn't, simply bringing parity between the two platforms makes sense. As far as being in my feelings -- that's an intellectually lazy response as I wasn't criticizing you per se, but merely suggesting that the subject and timing of your post could come off as sounding like an I told you so post. Not everyone is a hater -- but it you are numb to the nuances of certain comments, you'll always see them as such.
My response is not to your liking. It doesn’t make it lame. Once again…im only talking facts. You want Tidal to operate like another company. If you want tidal to act like Beatsource, then maybe you should go with Beatsource? I’m not arguing what ifs. Only facts. The facts are, you can’t trust only streaming in a professional capacity at this time.
@@ClevelandTerry Maybe you should check your content, you absolutely are arguing what if's. My point is SINCE network outages are absolutely a certainty, companies in this space should engineer around it by allowing subscribers to keep an offline locker. What's lame is that you clearly are in your feelings and when someone says something you don't like, it causes you to hallucinate into believing someone is against you. That's lame.
This was definitely a night that will remain in DJ History. Every DJ that is anti-Streaming will gladly remind people of the great Tidal blackout of 2024.
Absolutely agree. I purchase every song that I don't have when preparing for my events. I also make my own edits so everything is in my hard drive. Tidal just for requests that I don't have, period. Thanks as always for all the great content 💪
It happened to me NYE 2024. I only use streaming for “one off” requests. A guest wanted a specific artist that I don’t have in my library. I have similar artists on the HD. 30 minutes later things were good and I played it before the dance set which all of those songs are in my physical library. No issues because of the physical library. I do love streaming for special requests and I don’t mind paying extra to have it work with Serato but if the streaming service is temporarily down, it will not stop my show. Actual music on the computer/ext. HD is a must have.
I agree 1000%... Not only do i have streaming services, BUT I have my music on Harddrives (multiple) and my backup an 18TB HD... I can lose streaming, and it helps, but it don't make me...
My first year doing parties back in the 1900's I arrived at a place and I didn't have long enough extension cords. The party started late cause I had to run to Radio Shack (remember that place, lol) to get some. That taught me to have extra EVERYTHING and a plan B ready to go!
Life is just one incredible learning journey. Hopefully the "streaming only" DJs that had issues on NYE learned a valuable lesson that will benefit them in the future.
You are 100 percent correct WiFi or hotspot phone is not always strong and even if you have signal sometimes it can take long to load. I always and still do today download mp3s. The one and only reason I use streaming is when someone requests a song I don’t have. Although you can have 50 thousand songs of different genres which I do someone every once in a while will request that one song you don’t have. So that’s when it comes in handy.
I stopped relying on Streaming services the day Spotify stopped supporting dj software.. I now own all my music and although I do have an Apple account which supports Djay Pro, I only rely on it for less than 2% of my music mainly being requests that I don’t have but I have been harping on this for a long time, Dj’s that solely rely on streaming services are playing Russian Roulette,, On NYE, the venue I was at didn’t have Wifi and for some reason the internet on my phone was down from around 9pm onwards,, Luckily there were only 3 tracks that I was asked to play that I didn’t have..
I'm not a mobile dj, I enjoy your videos Terry becuase I love and respect your opinions on gear and the craft of being a DJ. IF I WAS as mobile dj, I would have BACKUPS BACKUPS BACKUPS of everything. Looking forward to another year of great content from you sir. Cheers!
I always have my backups on hand....2 mirrored 32 GB Thumb Drives (Around 900 Open Format Tunes) and 2 Mirrored 1 TB SSD's (10K Open Format Tunes)....like the quote from the credit card TV ad from the 80's... DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT
Happy New Year @Cleveland Terry. This is sound advice and a reminder to always be prepared for anything one can think of. Also, you can only trust what you can touch. You cannot touch Tidal like you can touch a play button or a hard drive.
PREACH 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. As someone who's worked in multiple areas of media/production and have been DJing since "physical media" meant vinyl. There's no way a pro should think they can rely on the uncontrollable variable of someone else's WiFi or even a hotspot for paid work. A pro should want to be in control of as many variables as possible to prevent things that can possibly go wrong. Use a drive and have a backup drive. Use streaming as a secondary source until it's reached a place where its rate of consistency is higher. Like Terry, said "we're not there yet."
Besides mobile dj'ing I am an video editor for the Associated Press. I rely on the internet for uploading stories, VO's, interviews, etc. I actually never had a problem. Unbelievable. I also never had a problem with streaming as well. But like you mentioned, there could be a problem. But when that problem occurs its probably the end of the world or a natural disaster like a city-wide power failure or earthquake, resulting in the party's over anyways. Happy New Year!
I couldn't imagine relying solely on a streaming service to professionally DJ a gig. A single WIFI or Hotspot issue and you're done. An external HD is the size of an ID card or smaller. Why take a chance on guaranteed security?
I was wondering wth was going on when my daughters and I were hanging out listening to music on Tidal and it kept giving me a play error. This makes sense. I only use Tidal for some songs I don’t have as a supplement only.
It's like everything else, always have a plan b and plan c. Whether it's a backup controller, tablet/phone playlist, cables, two USB sticks, two external drives, etc. Don't think everything's going to go 100% smoothly. Just as people make small mistakes during their mix, small technical glitches happen often. Your preparation to mitigate those issues is what's going to make you successful
Great topic, CT. I agree that the streaming platform is the future, but not right now. WIFI is going to have to be working 100% of the time, all the time, zero interruptions. I have to say this and really don't give any F's who take issue with what I am about to write. I don't always agree with @Cleveland Terry, but I agree with him about 95% of the time and enjoy his review videos and solid advice. What I won't do is write that something he said is lame or on the slick say he's not an intellect. Now, that's lame.
Loving these new shorts I been loading up some of my thoughts on video the same way. They’re Jems in a short period of time. Excellent advice as always my boy. Side note I feel so fat watching you now you been getting lean Brodie keep it up. Dam $12 juices 🥤
Streaming is just a safety device in my mind. Too much is on the line, and there are too many links in the chain, WIFI, the service, all that, I have had times where the streams cut out. Won't download, or can't communicate with the server. I have all my tracks, and stream oddball requests. And "I told you so" is great. Had part is that clients won't understand the way we do.
The other thing about streaming is it's not 100% legal. Tidal and other places are granting us the service under the idea that we are just playing the music in our home. The music industry knows yall are streaming during public events/for business, and that is not what the agreement with tidal is for. It will come down to if the industry thinks it's a big enough market to clamp down on. If/when it happens expect either to pay way more for dj access or for there to be some crazy exclusive service for "real" djs.
I have trust issues... that's why I have two identical laptops, SSDs, and an iPad loaded with my top 500 or so tracks. I don't delight in the failure, but it feels like an I told you so. Probably will work next year, too. Lol
I pay for multiple sources as a professional DJ. I have djay pro on my iPad Pro.. and serato on my laptop. I pay for SoundCloud, Beatsource and Apple Music.. but I still keep my hard drive on the laptop. I have crates ready for all applications…. BE A PROFESSIONAL! Write it off on your taxes…😊
Being a new DJ to start doing small sets I never rely on streaming. I have programs that I can download tracks and store on physical media to play at gigs.
Streaming only has always been super weird to me. Yes you can download stuff offline but I’ll never let a bad wifi signal stop me from being able to do my job. Totally amateur ish.
I still look at anyone streaming as a DJ as an amateur… you’re literally depending on a 3rd party to DJ when you don’t have to. This is taking digital DJ to stupidity now!!!
I HAD Tidal before they cancelled me. Yep. Said my card wasn't good and I needed to pay with PAYPAL. I added Beatsource. I use these services as a just incase or I don't have that song! Not for my main music source!
i do not use streaming services.I buy ,download, back up on ssds and own all the music and media i use.I do not use subs as far as music or dj software is concerned. If it got to the point where companies forced software subs on me i would go analogue and use cd players and turntables.I will not rent hardware ,software or my media.
You knew this was going to happen, lol. Spotify dropping streaming for DJ's should have been a warning sign. TIDAL and others will probably follow eventually. Best bet is to join a music pool if you're doing this professionally.
Whatever dj who is solely depending on music streaming and not investing their business in having external hard drives clearly shows their unprofessionalism. Get yourself a dj pool membership, and back up your music on an external hard drive, preferably a 2tb or higher. And purchase more than one. Trust I know!

They don’t want to buy their own music, they don’t want to learn to beat match, they don’t want to have to EQ the tracks in the mix, they don’t want to have to pick the tracks themselves, they don’t even want to have to fade it from one to the other, what is left for them to do? Sleepwalking themselves out of employment.
I got 4 streaming services, Tmobile on my iPad, hotspot on my phone, Comcast city wide wifi, and 90% of gigs have Wifi...These opinion are not absolute...That's like saying have 3 backup drives with you because 2 could fail.
