If the frontier doesn't top out that cheap, no way the xterra would be that cheap topped out. The last gen trd pro 4runner topped out at 55k. So I'm expecting it to top out around 50 to 55k.
Don't forget they need to tune the safety features a little bit. Like the rear emergency brakes need to run off when in tow mode and they need to fix the rear seatbelt sensors so they do not all go off if you have one person (or a backpack) in the back seat.
The original XTerra was a hit because it was a very basic, no frills, rugged SUV at a price that undercut the completion. The raised rear roof mimicked the Land Rover Discovery and it just worked. I'd argue that the Xterra and FJ going away actually help start the offroading craze. People missed them greatly and got concerned that they might all go away, so they started buying 4x4s in bigger numbers. They didn't miss the offroader craze - their ending helped create it. Without them going away, we wouldn't be wanting them so bad now.
Great discussion. Really like your renderings. Wish they brought back the xterra. I owned a 1st generation 2001 SEV6, sold it, got a 2010 s. Both 4x4 with a manual transmission
I have a 2015 model. It is a great running truck. Very solid and a throw back to a simple, yet effective design. The interior hasn’t aged as bad as I thought it had either.
I had a 01 XTerra with 380k miles until I wrecked it during a blizzard. Regardless that 3.3L ran like a champ. If Nissan offers a V6 or V8 like the old pathfinder it will definitely destroy the 4Runner. I'm a Yota fan, 2 Yota cars, but Nissan makes reliable and robust trucks so I purchased a used Frontier, over the Taco, a few years ago and I couldn't be happier.
One of my regrets in life was selling my 2001 Xterra 4wd with a manual transmission. If it does come back and more than likely more reasonably priced than the 4 runner then I’m in.
I love how everybody always blames emissions; it had the same drivetrain as the frontier. And God forbid Nissan would've invested anything in the old one to keep it current
CAFE(Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards are based on the average economy of all the vehicles a manufacturer builds. Sometimes, reducing the number of low economy vehicles by 30k a year might be all they need to get above the CAFE number. If a manufacturer doesn't get below that number, they can receive millions in fines from the EPA.
Blame woke California for creating the EPA and all this radical environmentalists woke groups and California getting into every states and say be more woke with crap EVs
Pickup trucks get a break on emissions, as for giant SUVs over 7,000 lb (I think it's 7,000 lb). That's why vehicle manufacturers are putting 4 cylinder or twin turbo V6 engines in midsized, truck frame, off road SUVs. There's a reason the roads in the US are dominated by pickup trucks and giant truck-based SUVs. I'm hoping the government will end these ridiculous standards, but I'm not holding my breath.
I hope you guys are spot on. I owned a '13 Xterra X 4wd and loved it! It was tough, reliable, took me anywhere I wanted to go and was only 25K new. Also owned a '03 Avalanche and I liked the midgate/removable window as well. Maybe good times are ahead, ehh?
I do have a Nissan as well that most don't even know exists, a 93 Patrol GR V6 turbo diesel 5 speed 4x4 2 door version, we brought it to the states from back home 3 months before covid started, it has a total of 213.160 km been in our family since new, all we did to it was a lift and bigger tires the rest is all stock, and besides it we have a 21 Land Cruiser and a 22 4runner trd pro both bought new, and im done with new cars for many years to come.
Since 2018, Nissan has sold exclusively in some Asian markets such as the Philippines the Nissan Terra, which is basically a 4x4 SUV on a chassis based on the Nissan Frontier. They have never wanted to say the reasons for not exporting it to other countries.
It's funny to me, reading comments about people needing something bigger than a 1st-gen XTerra because they have 1 carseat/kid. We did just fine with a carseat in a Suzuki SX4. We even did the occasional roadtrip with 3 adults and the carseat. A roof-box and a hitch-rack make it easy, but we often didn't even need either. I use a Crosstrek similarly now. Our 1st-gen Highlander easily fits its full capacity of 7ppl and their luggage too, for trips to/from the airport. For trips with all the toys, either vehicle can also pull a trailer. Maybe many people need to learn how to pack better.
I had a 2005 Xterra with 2 kids. My wife and I had no issues on road trips. The only reason I got rid of it is because we had a 3rd child and bought a bigger camper.
Xterra rumors and whispers seem to pop up every few years. I would love to see the Xterra _successfully_ come back. I've been in a range of vehicles, many more capable or practical in myriad ways, but my gen 1.5 Xterra is still one of my favorite vehicles to get into.
YOU GUYS ARE SPOT ON. Personally, I much prefer the normally aspirated engines, so Nissan are you listening? I will never pay $64K plus for a midsized ever. Thanks guys, good show on a fun topic
I think it's funny how they always try to make people think that naturally aspirated engines are inferior antique technology that are not fuel efficient. There are plenty of things you can do to a naturally aspirated engine to improve fuel economy. But you can't improve the fuel economy of a turbocharged engine because it uses fuel as an engine coolant and dumps the unburned fuel into the catalytic converter. Small displacement turbocharged engines in trucks are bigger gas guzzling pigs than a V8. If Nissan offers a free flowing performance intake/exhaust, high flow catalytic converter, and adjusts the engine tune, they could improve fuel economy and horsepower/torque. After I replaced the stock muffler on my truck with a Cherrybomb Vortex, my fuel economy improved by 2 MPG. However, then I replaced the 16-inch rims with 18-inch rims and fuel economy dropped by 2 MPG.
@@aerynlovell4754what? Unburned fuel doesn’t get dumped into the cat unless there is a problem. Also, I don’t doubt that you got better mpg with a free flowing exhaust, it also was very likely worse on emissions which is the other component of why manufacturers are resorting to small displacement turbo engines. It’s not just fuel economy. If not for the emissions and fuel economy standards, Toyota would put the diesel from the Hilux in these.
Automakers need to stop packing unnecessary tech into these vehicles and sell them cheaper. Keep the safety features, keep analog gauges, and stop loading in screens. I use my phone for GPG and music.
I had an ‘03 Xterra that was a great truck. I’d be optimistic about them bringing it back had I not seen the way they rolled out the new Z. It was supposed to be a $40k Japanese sports car, and ended up as a $50k + unobtainable disappointment that gets spanked by the $35k Mustang in every category.
I love my 06 Xterra even though it's just a cheap work truck and I beat it as such. It's got a few small things wrong at 170K but it still gets nearly 20MPG even loaded past payload and drives incredibly smooth. I'd consider a new one, but it HAS to be manual and 4x4 or I'll just hang onto what I've got and get an older frontier in 6 speed when the X retires.
That Frontier with the drop down mid gate would be amazing! Build that and the X-Terra both with V6. Removeable roof and rubber floors. The new 4R will be a quick redesign.
I think Nissan has a real good opportunity here. What they need to do is save money and go old school and be one of the only off-roaders that's old school where you have a manual transmission option. You have a manual transfer case manual hubs. It needs to have at least a rear locker. I'd recommend having a front locker too though, And I know there's probably not a chance of getting a manual cable or linkage engaged locker in an oem car even though I think that would be awesome. And I would totally trade in my car and buy that if there was one like that where everything was manual And then you wouldn't have to worry about airlines getting cut or electronics not working or putting it in drive in reverse 15 times to try and get the locker to engage or disengage you could actually feel it happening and I think people who buy those off-roaders would really like that. especially the way that everything's getting automated like I heard with the Toyota how you can't lock the rear diff unless you're in low range. that's just ridiculous or like if you use the terrain select you can't manually change other things and if they could make stuff more. A la carte like I love Ford bronco with the Sasquatch package because you could get a base model and throw on the Sasquatch package and you have a almost unstoppable off-roader and you don't have to get the crazy upper trims to do it but that would be. My recommendation is to keep everything as manual as possible and that should cut the cost too. And then they could also just stick with the 3.8 engine. It's cheaper. It's less complex, although I'd love to see a straight six. I know that's not going to happen and maybe even at Diesel option. Although you can't beat that instant torque in a gas engine at least from a turbo four banger with a tiny turbo.
Hey buddy of mine had a Nissan 4 x 4, I don’t expect anyone to understand this unless you’re from Canada he never plugged that vehicle and it always started
Still driving my '08 Xterra. I love these vehicles and hope they come back. It's a long shot nowadays, but I would be super excited if there was a manual transmission option.
If they bring a new Xterra to market on the new Frontier platform and powertrain, my second gen Frontier will be sitting at my local Nissan dealer's used car lot. Nissan needs to bring the Xterra back.
Hopefully a new XTerra comes sooner, rather than later. Nissan also needs to update the Frontier a little to get closer to equipment levels of the new batch of midsize trucks. There is likely some room above the Pro4X for something with a front locker and a lift to compete more with the higher end ones.
I have a 23 pro 4x and honestly wouldn’t want more than I have. There’s aftermarket front lockers available for it, but the vast majority of people buying trucks won’t even use the rear locker, let alone have the need a front. I actually use mine off roading and honestly for the majority of what I do, a suspension upgrade and tires is all I needed to be fairly capable. Even after lift, upper control arms, wheels and tires, I’m still 10k under a $60k stock TRD pro. As far as tech, I genuinely don’t know what else you would need
@@justaname109 adding more features like a factory lift and front locker won’t replace the pro4x, add a trim above it. Like the Pro4x warrior. Give people the option, there’s no reason to cede ground to Ford, GM and Toyota. For tech, definitely update the screen. Make it a little taller, add some more features like maps that’ll let you record your route off road. Give us wireless CarPlay and wireless charging on more trims. Lastly, add some engine options. A turbo 4 would be nice to see. Would be even better if Nissan would slap the new twin turbo 3.8l in there for the highest trims as an option to compete with the Raptor, h.o. 2.7l from GM and the TRD Pro iforce hybrid. In 22, the Frontier was a seriously competitive vehicle, now… it’s falling behind a bit from every other truck that has been refreshed.
@@lesfoster4127 I mostly agree here except for the turbo 4 and my 23 pro 4x came with wireless CarPlay and wireless charging already, so it already has those option. For off road, I use the OnX app, so I don’t need any additional features for offroad tech. I’m also quite happy with the naturally aspirated v6. To be honest, if they had an engine option, I’d rather it have a v8 titan motor. Everyone is doing the 4cyl turbo thing right now. I’ve owned quite a few turbo vehicles from Subarus to Volvos and it’s refreshing to just have a naturally aspirated and fairly simple engine. You may say it’s falling behind, I still like my 23 pro 4x better than any other midsize truck on the market.
@@justaname109 a v8 would be cool, but doubt that would happen. A turbo v6 would compete very well with the high output midsize trucks. Have some engine options will open up the list of perspective buyers a little. Wireless CarPlay and charging is so far only available on the pro4x. Would be nice to see that trickle down to lower trims or even be a kit that could be installed later. Still having a factory map would be nice, especially when phones hit dead zones. A little larger screen to compete more and also integrated trail brake controller would be nice. These are things a lot of the other midsize trucks have. If Nissan wants to remain competitive, they need to start adding to the frontier. You or I may like the truck as is, but we’re not the general buying public who’s wanting more and nicer things.
@@lesfoster4127 they put a v8 in Chris Forsbergs frontier, so it’s been done hahaha. But yes, a twin turbo v6 would probably be more likely, but it’s also not remotely necessary for off road. The only reason is a flex on the street. One of my best offroad vehicles was a barely 150hp Toyota pickup
Nissan is doing well updating their lineup. I think the long wait potentially could work in their favor due to the uncertainty (what is gonna sell vs what is gonna last) in the current market.
Until last week I had a 2004 Xterra. It has been my favorite daily driver I have ever had. But with a kid it was starting to get cramped. I considered a newer roomier Xterra, but finding one in good shape, with low miles, and not ridiculously priced was not easy. I ended up getting an older extremely low mile crew cab Dodge Ram that will eventually also replace my 2007 Nissan Titan farm/work truck that has almost 400,000 major repair free miles. If it ever decides to give up the ghost and the Dodge becomes the work truck, a new model Xterra would definitely be on my short list for a new daily, especially if they stick to the philosophy they had with the original of making a basic rugged vehicle.
I had a 2003 Supercharge Xterra. Loved my "Gray Terra"! Had 156,000 miles on it. I hope they come back! I will be trading in the 4-runner for a Badass Xterra!
Xterra was a classic. I loved my 2000 model. Can't wait to see it come back. The one you showed wouldn't be bad at all, especially in that configuration you showed. Just don't turn it into a suburban grocery getter mom-mobile. An off-road capable vehicle should look like one.
If they want to match or 'beat' Toyota at their game, then they must bring both the X-terra and Frontier Warrior with the 3.5TT unit out of the upcoming Armada.
Id be happy if they literally just brought back the 2015 Xterra Pro4x with the 6 speed manual at its original msrp of $30k lol no updates, no different design or new tech...just exactly as it was. Dont need anything more fancy or more fuel efficient. Just give me that old reliable, rugged and simplistic SUV at that same affordable price and id be good to go.
Guys look over to South East Asia. Nissan put out something called a Nissan Terra which is pretty much the suv version of their Frontier. I’ve got one and I love it.
Here in east / Asia, we have body on frame SUV Nissan TERRA, (maybe modern X-terra in diesel) that beats Toyota Fortuner (4runner in diesel / HILUX SUV) in comfort, interior space in cheaper price. The looks is kinda same in the concept photo in video. just like Frontier or Navarra but in suv form. u can search it. (In middle east, they called it X-terra too)
Nissan please listen to us. We want the Xterra back, no cvt, not turbos, this can be the way to out your name on the top again, pro 4x, pro 4x Nismo. Make it happen.
I want Honda to hop in as well. The passport and Ridgeline need to go body on frame for that size class. If they want unibody offroaders they can always make more smaller models like the Ford Maverick.
My wife loved her 2nd Gen Xterra but it was a bit small for child seats. If this comes out with decent interior room I think it's a contender for her next vehicle.
Nissan unfortunately hiked the price of the Frontier Pro4X enough that it is no longer cheaper than the competition. This was a MISSED opportunity for them. With a nice truck they could have stolen many customers by keeping it 3k cheaper
My 2015 TRD- OFF ROAD with the 4 liter would spank some V-8s. It was also ALOT lighter. Nissan, cut the weight and keep the non turbo V-6 and gas mileage and performance will put you on top. Full Stop!!
Besides the Xterra, Nissan should aim for the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (or Prado Mk5 in markets such as Australia) with an old-school sub-Y63 BoF SUV inspired by older Patrol SUVs such as the one found in George Michael's holiday classic Last Christmas. It may be called Patrol Sport or Patrol Safari in markets where Patrol Y63 is sold, and simply Patrol all across Europe and perhaps in North America. It could also be sold in Japan as the revived Safari.
The Patrol is already here. It's called the Armada. A version similar to the Land Cruiser Prado is unlikely since that would interfere with the Xterra.
@@johnnymason2460 The Y62 Patrol/Armada is more of a Middle East/Australia-friendly behemoth rather than a North American one. The Y63 Armada could end up with the same fate as the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 back in 2021. The Patrol-based LC250/Prado rival isn't related to the North American Frontier pickup at all.
I'd love to see the Xterra come back, but also would love to see Ford bring the Everest to North America. 4Runner just doesn't have any competition in the body on frame SUV category other than other Toyota/Lexus products.
The Xterrible was the smaller-ish brother of another once legendary vehicle that Nissan turned into a dog's breakfast: The Pathfinder. Pathfinder was the true competitor to the 4Runner, not the Xterra. Xterra was more after Cherokee sales.
I'll disagree with you on that. The Cherokee wasn't even offered during most of the XTerra's run. I bought an XTerra because I couldn't afford a 4Runner at the time. It served me well for almost 18 years and was still ran great when I sold it. I replaced it with a 5th gen 4Runner because it had most of the features I liked about the XTerra, minus the manual transmission 😢.
Base it off the new Frontier, with a shorter wheel base, and spring under axle in the rear. Give it a dedicated off-road model to compete with the TRD Pro. Give it stock, off-road LED roof lights, a factory Titan Swap with 33" AT tires, extended black fender flares for the Titan Swap, and higher front and rear differential gear ratios, so that buyers can add 35" tires to the stock rims, and only lose a little bit of gas mileage.
I liked my Xterra, was a great truck/SUV. simple. interior was a little lame....plastic. Recently replaced it with a 23' Frontier Pro4x. Love my new truck. got 3k off. was about $40k plus TT&L. good luck getting a deal on a new taco. A new Xterra would be cool. Nissan.....Please....if you make a new Xterra.....KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. Don't make it overly complicated and $60k.
I don't care how they price it.... if manufacturers don't STOP cramming excessive computerization into vehicles I won't be buying any more new ones. Just build something that's simply engineered and reliable. Technology doesn't age well, and as much as vehicles cost these days, they have to last 10‐15 years. No more laptops on wheels, please.
Well, we got the pricing of the new Trd Pro Tacoma and if the 4Runner is still more expensive than the Tacoma like it used to be the trd pro will probably be 70,000

@@razorback02 correct. This is why with EV sales beginning to slow companies are still releasing them because EV’s help drive the CAFE averages down.
Totally agree with the strong points of the Nissan. Simplicity and reliability.
This is awesome! Loved the 2 Xterras I’ve owned!
Previous X’s were based on the frontier. Would be ideal to keep that heritage.
Since 2018, Nissan has sold exclusively in some Asian markets such as the Philippines the Nissan Terra, which is basically a 4x4 SUV on a chassis based on the Nissan Frontier. They have never wanted to say the reasons for not exporting it to other countries.
Alex and Tommy you guys are awesome! Keep it coming!
Good job guys! Who ever made your prototypes knocked it out of the park and I hope Nissan follows through this time:)
That Frontier with the drop down mid gate would be amazing! Build that and the X-Terra both with V6. Removeable roof and rubber floors. The new 4R will be a quick redesign.
If the Xterra looked like those mock ups and carries the same V6 as Frontier I would trade my Bronco for one.
I’ve been saying Nissan needs to bring back the xterra, their timing was off with the original release of it there wasn’t big demand for off-road suvs
I have a 4Runner but Im excited to see what Nissan does with the Xterra.
Yeah. That’s going to save the brand. Offer what only very few want.
If the new 4Runner is priced like the new Tacoma cost alone the Nissan ExT will have the advantage. They both are great for reliability.
A v6 any day over a 4
Nissan is coming back! I miss the original Pathfinder
Xterra was great. Still is. If they bring it back, hoping it uses the Frontier everything, especially that V6
4 mpg is not a terrible difference in my humble opinion especially compared to the reliability you know you will get from a naturally aspirated v6
Please, do the front end from the frontier, not the typical Nissan tapered grill.
This right here. They do the same front end as the frontier with that NA v6 and similar body styling as the old and it’s a winner
A returning xterra should dispense with any fancy trim. Stick with a base, mid and pro4x or just 2 trim levels
Alex is great. Need more of him on tfl
This is awesome Nissan make it happen listen to your fans. Also hear about the Rogue rock creek we need this become a reality
Yes! I just got a '15 Pro4X Xterra!
This could be great. Modern selection is pretty much 4Runner or land cruiser. Would be nice to have more options.
Yes, please but it better be quick! After dumping the Titan they should have the production capacity.
I still have my 2005 Xterra, love it. The only way I would get rid of it is if a new and improved Xterra is released.
have a 2004 w 172,000 on it Beat up but runs great
My 2010 Off Road is the best vehicle ive ever owned. Would buy a new one in a heartbeat if my current one ever dies.
That silhouette could also be the Y63 Patrol / Armada slated for release later this year.
i just want for Nissan to do it for the sake of the Nissan suv fans lets stick it it up to toyotas greed
I'm always a Toyota fan but I'm thinking about switching now.
Amen
I've had 2 xterras... hopefully it'll be around 35k
I want Honda to hop in as well. The passport and Ridgeline need to go body on frame for that size class. If they want unibody offroaders they can always make more smaller models like the Ford Maverick.
Don't count on Honda doing that. They care too much about FWD and fuel efficiency.
Did Alex draw those Xterra conceps? Looks amazing!
I don't think I can ever trust Nissan especially with their transmissions. But man my uncle had an early year xterra it was a tank
My wife loved her 2nd Gen Xterra but it was a bit small for child seats. If this comes out with decent interior room I think it's a contender for her next vehicle.
Id buy one if it comes out
Nissan unfortunately hiked the price of the Frontier Pro4X enough that it is no longer cheaper than the competition.
The Everest needs to come here as a 5-passenger off-road capable SUV. The Explorer already covers the 7-passenger family crossover market.
The Xterrible was the smaller-ish brother of another once legendary vehicle that Nissan turned into a dog's breakfast: The Pathfinder. Pathfinder was the true competitor to the 4Runner, not the Xterra. Xterra was more after Cherokee sales.
Yeah the original pathfinder was essentially a suv 2/4 door hardbody.
Nissan pathfinder owner here If CVT no way
I mean if the xterra has the 3.8 V6 I would take it over the 2.4 turbo hybrid stuff on the Toyota
This would explain why they were caught testing a last-gen Avalanche near their facility in 2023…
Love my 2011 X!
1990’s were excellent… nice to see them
making another run!!
Are you guys doing the 2025 Infinity QX80?!
I still see Xterra’s everywhere here in Colorado.
I think it's one of the few SUVs that will last forever Nissan xterra
Their suspension wasn't to be desired when it comes to aftermarket parts. But if it's affordable with a v6 I'll switch from Toyota
Well, we got the pricing of the new Trd Pro Tacoma and if the 4Runner is still more expensive than the Tacoma like it used to be the trd pro will probably be 70,000
Hurry hurry hurry Nissan! Call me nuts but I think a hybrid 3 liter v6 would be awesome
Would buy before a Toyota for certain. Nissans are decent if avoid their cvts
