  • How to replace a Chevy Silverado fuel pump. This is how to remove and install a fuel pump in a Chevy Silverado 1500. You also need to replace your fuel filter when you replace the fuel pump in your truck. SUBSCRIBE! READ MORE FOR FUEL PUMP & TOOL LINKS:
    It is important to buy the highest quality fuel pump you can afford. This is an ACDelco fuel pump. Avoid cheap fuel pump assemblies, like Airtex, at all cost.

    Make sure you find the EXACT fuel pump that you need. There are different models depending on what emission system your vehicle has. Triple check what fuel pump you need by looking under the vehicle to see what/how many outlets/connectors are on your existing fuel pump assembly.
    This can be hard to see, but a good trick is to use your phone and take a picture with the flash on. You want to get a good picture of the top of the tank. This way, you don't have to remove the whole tank or bed just to see what pump assembly you need!

    Sometimes, you can get away with just replacing the fuel pump itself, and not replace the whole fuel pump assembly.
    However, if your fuel gauge is not working properly, you HAVE to replace the whole assembly.
    Always use WIX fuel filters. They are the best fuel filters you can buy for your vehicle!
    This will work on a Chevy Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, or a GMC Sierra.

    Nicely done video, very good job. I must point out one major procedural error; ALWAYS disconnect the battery ground lead first and reconnect last. If your wrench makes contact with any metal part while loosening or tightening the positive cable with the ground still attached you will be in for a rude awakening...

  • @TheThemechanic89

    One thing I would recommend that should have been in this video is before you start doing any of this. Pull out the relay for the fuel pump and start the truck and let it run until it dies. This will release any pressure left in the fuel lines before you disconnect them.

    Yellow black is ground to fuel gauge,
    purple is fuel gauge +5 volts,
    grey is fuel pump +12 volts, only shows the +12 volts for 2 seconds after key its turned on.
    Black is grounded to frame. In the same ground spot the fuel cap ground strap is grounded, is a short black wire that exits the Wire harness between cab and box Mine just broke here when I was changing brake line to rear, so if a pump is not pumping check this ground spot.

    To raise the bed up you don't need to take the liner out... I would take the toolbox out for helping with weight and also take off the tailgate, then one person can lift the bed up with no help. Leave the 4 bolts threaded a couple threads on the passenger side, take the 4 completely out on the driver's side, and remove the 2-3 bolts holding the gas filler into the bed. Fairly easy past that
    Also the crimp connectors they supplied have heat shrink on the ends that will make them water resistant

    Hey Matt...I'm just about to embark on this very project on my 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3 V8 Z71, LS trim 4WD. Having a hell of a time finding an exact match replacement with the OEM electrical connectors. Mine look exactly like those on your old pump.....the right, black connector has 3 wires and is oval shaped. The left, white connector has 4 wires and is square. So....guess I have to go with changing the connector as you showed. Wanted to know what AC Delco part number you used as the replacement if you recall....thank-you

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  7 років тому +4

      Okay, before you start...My pump part # was an AcDelco MU1613. What you want to do is call AcDelco's parts catalog department and give them your VIN. They will tell you EXACTLY what pump you need. You don't always have to get AcDelco fuel pumps though. A lot of times AcDelco just puts their name on the box and puts another manufacturer's fuel pump assembly in the box. For example, Delphi is an Original Equipment supplier and it could be a Delphi pump in a AcDelco box.
      Delphi makes high quality fuel pumps so that is an option too. Just buy AcDelco, Delphi, Bosch don't buy cheap bargain brands like AirTex EVER!
      Whatever you do, just don't go down to the local part stores and buy the pump there. If you go to RockAuto.com you can see all of the fuel pump assemblies available for your truck. Check the warranties too, the Delphi ones have a Lifetime warranty and the AcDelco ones are 1 year warranty at the time of writing this.
      The local part stores have lifetime warranties, but they factor it in to the price. They make you pay 2-3x the amount of RockAuto so they are able to provide you with a lifetime warranty.
      They use a couple of different things to determine what fuel pump you need: the bed length and the wheelbase. The wheelbase is measured from the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel on one side of the vehicle measured in inches. The bed length is just that, the length of the bed.
      Don't worry about the electrical connectors too much. They should supply you with a new and improved harness with the fuel pump if it is necessary.
      Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

      @terryparker1633 7 років тому +1

      Will do....Thank-You. The video was very helpful. I have the feeling I will get the correct fitting pump but the electrical connection may have changed or been upgraded. So the portion of the video dealing with changing the connector will be very useful. Thanks-Again

      +Terry Parker You're welcome. Yea, just follow what I did with the new connector and you should be in good shape. Don't forget the dielectric grease on the new electrical connector end where it plugs up to the new fuel pump!

    • @terryparker1633
      @terryparker1633 7 років тому +2

      Just a quick note to thank-you once again for your video. I went at it today and completed the project without issues. Truck runs perfectly, gas gauge no longer bouncing about, installed a new fuel filter as per the instructions as well. Like you described, getting that retainer ring off wasn't very difficult but it was a little tricky to get back on by myself. Turns out my replacement pump was the exact same as yours and therefore I had to do the rewire of the one connector. Followed your instructions, soldered them and heat sealed in marine shrink tube. Once again, thanks for the video. Easy to understand, easy to follow and accurate.

    For everyone out there, don't matter my mistake. Be sure the connect the ground wire bc I had pump go bad in freezing weather. In top of which I was traveling to diff state. So I did all the work in AutoZone parking lot laying in the snow and freezing weather. So before putting truck bed back on and reinstalling of course I'd test it. But didn't work and I went thru about 4 new, including having to rewire. It was super bowl Sunday and I was late. Finally a guy passing by asked me if I had the ground connected. Nope. Totally didn't realize I needed it connected. I thought it was for electrical surge protector. Started right up. Just a simple wire coming from an area I didn't think important caused me so much grief. So don't forget about it. In Silverado the wire that comes from connection by the gas inlet tube.

    How much is the fuel pump?

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  4 роки тому +1

      Depends. This one was OEM for $150-$200 with a lifetime warranty. You can get cheap ones for under $100, but people don't trust the cheap ones to last.

    If you going to use a after mark fuel pump like me (precision) from auto zone . When it comes to the wireinging .... make sure you use the a... to a...b to b...c..to and d...to do ...trust me ...the instructions that come with the new pump are not the way you should wire it . I had to do it twice before I figure it out it was not pump fuel . So save you the headache....and use the a to a ........ b to b.........c to c.........d to d .....wireing

    Bed liner dont do nothing...there's no bolts under it I promise

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  5 років тому +1

      I didn't learn that until later. They are bolted from the bottom. Still a PITA to do, impossible to remove the bed by yourself, and you have to worry about damaging the paint when you set the bed on the ground.

      Thanks, I'm glad the video helped. Yea, If I knew they bolted from the bottom I might have done it that way from the start. That's the method I prefer on smaller trucks anyway. That's how I did it on my Ford Ranger fuel pump video.

      On some trucks you have to remove the bed liner to remove the bed for easy access to the pump.
