Here is our disclaimer... This is just a demonstration and video of how we changed ours. Please attempt at your own risk you are dealing with fuel and heavy parts and is possible to harm yourself or others in this procedure. --- End of disclaimer.
This is our video of how we changed the fuel pump in the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado again. We had previously bought a cheap $50 pump and changed it using the tilted bed method and was not happy with it a shop chain hoist would have made this job removing the bed completely effortless but once again my son and I chose the not so easy method hope you enjoy!

This is why you spend the money and get a factory Delco pump from a reputable dealer. A lot of the aftermarket stuff you find for cheap online is junk and you will just have to do the job again in a short amount of time. Good job posting a clear video explaining the entire process.
Well done young man. You are a heck of a garage engineer like your dad. Pretty sure my 01 Silverado will be needing a USA pump soon. So thanks for showing the steps and great vid.
This was really helpful, I’m actually changing out the Airtex one that was already in the truck when we bought it for a ACdelco one😂
GOOD VIDEO,I FOUND THAT PUTTING A LITTLE DAWN DISH SOAP ON THE O RING HELPS THE PUMP SEAT BETTER AND MAKES THE LOCK RING A LITTLE EASIER TO PUT ON.
I just want to say thank you big time!!! I have been trying the usual tap the ring and penetrating oil for two days now. I watched you use the channel locks and thought, why not. Moved it in the first try. Thank you so much !!! :)
Great to hear!
@@BigRedFishDad had a mechanic install an in tank fuel pump and it leaks vapor and the mechanic refused to fix his repair. It won't pass smog until fixed. Any ideas?
Lmaoo the lock ring is giving trouble as well I say out side for 3 hours fighting that thing and still couldn't, I bright out Chanel kicks by never thought I'd that idea😭😭😭
Great job
I liked the channel lock plyer trick to remove the ring... didn't have one and used a large visegrip .to replace the ring I used a 3/4 open ended wrench to push down the ring and hammer it tight.
Thanks for the video...straight to the point with all you need to know
and no extra B's
Thanks
very cool.......nice to see a Dad showing his Son how to work with his hands.......and........even a Dad that knows how......lol.......hard to find these days.........I show my 2 Grandkids all I can .......if I can get them away from video games !!!
just shut the breaker box off and say a fuse is blown and you don't have another fuse to get the house up and running. Its a white lie but itll do them good lol
Thanks for posting this. Nice clear photography, especially with the bed removed. Hope your new pump lasts a long time... what a pain to go thru the work of putting one in and having it last only 6 months (at least you had the new wire connector already in place).
you all probably dont care at all but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Nova Jamie thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Nova Jamie it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account !
@Joshua Zachary glad I could help =)
OEM on fuel related items 100% of the time. That's not to say that OEM could not go bad, but the chances are very slim. Also, just cut an access panel in the bed, bedliner covers it and sooo much easier.
14k subscribers is bs. Very informative. It’s the type of video that has everything. Watch 1 and done. Go fir the job right away. Thank you, new sub
You guys made it harder then it should
Before putting the new pump back in the tank, you should turn on the ignition key for a second or two to make sure the pump works.
Thank you
The Chanel lock idea worked wonders for me doing it by myself
Glad to know you used the technical terms
Jay C's Place “clippy things”
Son knows how to get the job done , thank you for the guidance!
My 99 suburban pump went out about every 4 to 5 months until I stopped useing ethanol gas and it's been 8 years since the last pump and still going.
Thank you! Looking at possibly having to do this with my son on his 01 silverado soon as the fuel gauge spontaneously goes to zero and back up. Keeps running though, so we might be ignoring it for a while.
Cheri M yep... that is first symptom... be careful might run for a day or a year that way but ours of course died on the road 20 miles from home. Just runs out of gas and won't start.
My Silverado is having same issue with the gauge. It's all over the place. It's a common problem for the sending unit to go bad, or even the gauge behind the cluster. My gauge is fine. Did you get yours sorted out?
Thank you a lot, from michoacan mexico, exellent video
ariba zitacuaro. thx for the video
So i have this truck and the other thing that's not the fuel pump sticking up on the top side of the tank but on the back what is that? how do i replace it? it has a hose that goes to the evap system .
Yellow black is ground to fuel gauge,
purple is fuel gauge +5 volts,
grey is fuel pump +12 volts, only shows the +12 volts for 2 seconds after key its turned on.
Black is grounded to frame. In the same ground spot the fuel cap ground strap is grounded, is a short black wire that exits the Wire harness between cab and box Mine just broke here when I was changing brake line to rear, so if a pump is not pumping check this ground spot.
Which one goes with witch my number is 4704585691
I too had a hard time w the new seal. Too thick. I used my old one and it went in fine.
Well done! The filter on the fuel pump I just took out is 100% blacker then yours lol
Bout to do this on the side of the interstate In New Mexico. Luckily I gotta motorcycle in the back that may or may not start to get parts otherwise 1/2 mile walk across country :)
Great job thanks lots of help
Metal on metal can create spark, so use something other than a metal punch to put on lock ring.
Brass punch
Good job!
I have exact same truck just red and my fuel pump just went out yesterday. Called advance and they said that these model trucks have 2 different fuel pumps one with one electrical plug in and one with 2. Which did you all have?
two... look at 20:10
Kid did real good in this video wearing rubber shoes & shorts.
In fact better than most so called adults attempting the same job.
BTW I have been known to actually put a rag on the pump assembly & stand on it to get it to go down all the way .
Will that fuel pump work in a 2005 Chevy Silverado....
I'm dreading taking off those 2 plastic clips
You guys are a couple of beautys
Why thank you... but I am married :) Thanks for watching!
So how long did that cheap airtex pump last? A year year and a half?
Is the Airtex pump still working?
I recommend cleaning the dirt around the fuel tank better so none goes inside.
Informative video!! Thank you boys
Thankyou.
good video Thanks
This will be my second pump as well.
hello my 00 silverado has the middle hose broked where conect to the pump and down where it has a small t i cant find that line online or how is it call ???
I believe that's the Evap Emissions line. Might have to order it from GM dealer.
I HAVE A 2002 SILVERADO WITH A. 5.3 L IN MICHIGAN THE LOCK RING IS VERY MUCH GONE HOW DO YOU REMOVE THAT?
Very informative video. Curious though, does the other end run through the cab? Or all the way under to the ecm and relay?
is this a v6 or v8. Im trying to figure out if i have one connector or 2
My problem isn't the pump, it's the fuel gauge (float) in the tank. Because my truck is rusty, I can't decide between this technique, or cutting an access hole in the bed
@Five hundred 20s bedliner
This was a decent video, however I'd like to point out that without adhesive lined heat shrink over those butt connectors, those splices are going to fail.
Also, that blue wire you were mentioning at the end, is the wire for trailer brakes, GM includes the wire in the harness but doesn't terminate it at either end. So if you have a trailer with brakes and you install a seven pin trailer connector, you would connect the rear end of that wire to your trailer connector and the front end to your trailer break controller in the cab.
Had an in tank fuel pump replaced and it leaks fumes from the ring after doing a smoke test. The mechanic refused to fix his repair and have problems with other mechanics to fix his work. Any ideas on how I might fix the problem?
@@michaelpearce8661 DIY and lubricate the gasket prior to reinstalling it, although it's possible the previous "mechanic" could have damaged the gasket (by not lubricating it) and that would require a new gasket.
But there are too many possibilities as to why it could be leaking, for me to give any decent advice without seeing it.
Had my in tank fuel pump replaced and it now leaks vapor out of the ring and won't pass California smog.
Maybe you should have purchased the 'higher' quality NAPA fuel pump the first time the factory fuel pump quit working ! Did , you purchase another cheap fuel pump for a replacement for the SECOND replacement pump ?
what brand fuel pump failed so others know?
Wear eye protection when removing fuel lines!!
Next time show the wiring process would be helpful if someone showed this
You're kidding me right..?! Who's going to pull the truck bed off to do this?
Go oem ac Delco fuel pum0
No way is easier lift the whole bed than just removing the tank 😭😭😭😭😭
buy delphi pump
I'm up to the connector, I gotta rewire it and the paper it came with isn't really explaining it good what wires go with what wires smh
Will an 05 Silverado fuel tank fit a 02 gmc fuel tank?
I am not sure but from what I read once the changes in the next gen were mostly body like the new fender look. Check a pick and pull salcage site they always show what years and models that have the part you need or maybe rockauto.com and compare part numbers.
@@BigRedFishDad okay thank you sm! :)
Kids funny as hell make more videos 😂😂😂😂
Nice video. Could only see hands when showing how to take off the fuel lines. No close-up of how the clips unlock.
Right on the end theres a pinch point pinch each side and pull the line be carefull if you force it theyll get stuck in your lines and you wont get a good seal
For the gas neck u can remove the 3 8mm screw's its way easier
Like we did at 7:02????
@@BigRedFishDad no you took it of different look in there were the gas hose go in there is 3 8mm screw's , then it falls away from the main neck black peace that's attached to the bed with the 3 special head bolts
What if it is still buzzing but not staying turned on?
????... the pump comes on for a few seconds every time you turn the key on until it builds pressure. If you hear it come on then go off it is likely still good. But suppose it could be "weak"... if that was case I would think it would keep running though trying to build pressure.
@@BigRedFishDad yeah the day before it stopped working it was whining a lot and so I had it parked and the following day I went out and it just turned off and I turned it on again and it puttered out again
What happens when u put the new one on and not replace the old plug
Don't think you can since the plugs are different. That is why a new pig tail is included with the pump.
I would like to see u try this with a 20 year old truck in Minnesota😂😂
Heck, the ring would probably fall off in flakes! Had to change the wheel bearing on the in-laws truck once and the plate that is behind the rotors I don't know what it's called but it had completely disintegrated. They are from Indiana pretty much anywhere with snow and salt all the time on the roads work is a pain in the ..........!
@@BigRedFishDad yep I live in Minnesota and any 2 hr project turn into a whole day lol😂😂
What’s that tiny plug for, at 09:54
I’m not exactly sure what you are referencing… there are two plugs on the fuel pump. Ours may look a little different because this was the 2nd time so what you might be seeing is the butt splice connections.
@@BigRedFishDad Yes, the smaller plug of the two. It's dark gray in the video. What is that connection for?
God damnnit little fish! Good job son.
Another parts place I ordered from 1 a auto all junk
Es más fácil y rápido bajar el tanque de gasolina saludos cordiales desde MÉXICO
Thats a Jesus fish < i know Him too : )
Not really good, showing that you only press one clip on the two large lines when in fact there are two clips to depress, one also underneath the line which is very difficult to get too.
Don Less ummm... ok thanks must be different on yours. Lines slide right off the way he does it. No resistance, no broken clips. Hopefully if it's not easy to come off with a little common sense can realize that something is still catching. thanks for watching and who knows maybe someone will have a little bit of a hard time and use your third clip comment to get them through the job.
BURN SMARTASS BURN 😂😂😂
@@BigRedFishDad let me translate for you, because your reply and the offending comment show a lack of communication. The person filming when the lines were removed didn't Show up close how the fuel line retaining clips work. Maybe you should do a dedicated video telling people how to get the retaining clips out the correct way; up close, like the person watching the video was there with you.
I've yet to see anyone change one that's buried in rust and corrosion where nothing comes apart, why is that? I'm all ears.
Because we live in Texas no salt and crap they put on that white stuff that destroys the vehicles... that's also why the 20 year old truck still has a great frame.
There is no such thing as USA made fuel pump or any part.
I have a 99 Silverado my fuel gauge went crazy then back to normal.....until one day 2 weeks ago I went out of town....then bam just nothing....I towed it home started right up ran like shit....so I put it in the shop....$337.00 later I have new fuel injectors the dumbass didnt even change out my fuel pump like I asked....ran good for two days fuel gauge started again then bam I'm towing her home....I'll be replacing my pump myself....
That really sucks... Good luck!
"Well it's harder this time"
I hear ya man.
#1 rule. Don't buy parts on Amazon. Go to advance or auto zone. I prefer Advance bc ion want have to make 3 trips to get the right part but if u like going back then go to auto zone. But try a $351 Delphi fuel pump , got it down to 160 😶, you pay for quality and why put cheap parts in your truck? Go get it on a commerical acct,.
Can you buy oem parts on amazon?
Whole lot of work, 7 minutes of gibberish, why Not bring the tank down or better yet the lazy way, cut up the bed and work on it instead???
Speaking of gibberish... but what I think you're saying is you'd rather drop the tank. That's probably the most difficult way for the Silverados. The easiest method wa's to take the bed bolts out, get four people, and lift the bed off... takes 5 minutes😎
@@BigRedFishDad where I'm i gonna get 4 guys to help me lift the bed??
@@humbertorangel5708 I used my wife, daughter, and son.
Not good....to much .for nothing .
