I heard that one of the reasons ice stays longer in a Yeti type cooler is there is about a half inch clearance on the bottom so the majority of the bottom is off the ground. Next time put it on some bricks or 2x4's. The bricks won't conduct heat as much.
Have the same cooler.I made a cutting board to fit the lip on the inside and that helped alot.Next will be the foil insulation. Also did the foil in a cheap boat cooler and that helped also.Used two layers of foil,it's thin and cheap .Just make sure you can remove it for cleaning.
that's pretty cool. This is assuring that I won't need to pay a fortune for the cooler itself and then not have enough money to pay for the food that goes into the cooler. I wanna try this. Thanks for sharing.
The cooler itself isn't to expensive. The Yeti or Arctic Ice or the Grizzly coolers will keep ice longer but it comes at a price. This had similar results without the price tag.
I was just gonna use a couple of emergency blankets to line my cooler and then use a bag clip to seal it up like a bread bag. What do you think about that?
I believe it did! I have used the same coolers on extended hunting trips without the reflective material or the water bottle/plywood and had nowhere near the same results.
Reflectix is not insulation. It reflects the suns rays (hence the name) it has an r-rating of less than 1. Using it in any other manor is a waste of money. If you want some dead-air space, you might as well buy bubblewrap. and actually, a closed-cell foam like a yoga mat or sleeping pad would work better.
What was the average air temperature outside? I heard the nights were cool. I wonder if throwing a tarp of the reflective material over the cooler would help on sunny days? Might spook the local wildlife though.
Chris Lassaline I would say the average temperature was high 80's to the low 90's. I did keep the coolers under a tree the entire time and the night temps were high 40's to low 50's.
Hi - yes - great tip - I follow an another guy on UA-cam that recommended the same - very good idea ! By the way - what SIZE is that cooler ? 90 Q or 100 (quart) ?
OK like your were in Denver at 32℉ overnight. Did you go down to the flats or up in the mountains which are even colder and probably refroze all that ice every night. I know it colder than crap up there. Not saying your hacks arn't good but should flatlanders expect the same results .
Did you use an adhesive on the lid reflective foil? If, what did you use? I would guess the reflective material ‘envelope’ is not attached to the cooler?

My main idea was to keep a cooler as cold as possible so when our elk was processed we could drop it in a ice cold cooler in order to start chilling it faster while still being out in the woods.
"My main idea was to keep a cooler as cold as possible so when our elk was processed we could drop it in a ice cold cooler in order to start chilling it faster while still being out in the woods." Then you probably should have told people that in your video. We aren't mind readers.
Now all you need is 2 more people to put that 500 lb cooler in the truck
LOL

Should of used the blue Styrofoam for low temp insulating. The silver is best for exterior and reflecting uv rays.
Good idea. This is why I love you tube thanks sir. God bless you
Sweet! That's a good idea man
I didn't see insulation on the bottom where the losses are highest, but I did see insulation on the lid where the losses are lowest.
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
25 or 50 just a bit of difference. Are you any good at making calculations?
What works well to is instead of plywood, I use the rubbermaid closet shelving. Allows cold air circulate upwards. Nice video my man.
Brian Guerrero interesting use of the shelving. I'll look into that.
This is the hack I have been talking about. Radiant barrier inside and out of the cooler keeps the ice longer

Tom Ballard I would love to see a picture of the cutting board in the cooler.

Nice.
I never really thought of making a "how to make it" video.

On hunting trips,we put our beer in coolers so it doesn't freeze.
lol
That reflectix has got to help as well.

That's a good idea i think i will try it.
Now let's try it on an 80 degree day
Gary Pace as a matter of fact it was high 70's low 80's the whole week
No food?
You're going to wreck that nice piece of chipboard from melted ice.
Where do you put food and drink ? It's 60% frozen water bottles

much more efficient to put the reflective on the outside to keep the top cooler. Also, put reflective on bottom where it meets the ground.

Andres Etchenique that was a 100qt I also did it with a 50 qt
Can you show how to make it?

That much ice shud hold for a month

It was just plain ol' Duct tape
You dont need glue. Buy reflective tape or tin foil tape.
What brand is the cooler and how many quarts is it?
It is a 100qt Igloo cooler from Walmart
Interesting.. why not put some plastic trays rather than wood.
Joseph DuPont I just had some scrap wood laying around

big damn deal! you just stored ice.
Now put your food and drinks in there.
it will be water shortly.

Blowing Country ....you're a ass
