Last rule: After the cooler is full, just hire a crane to put it on your boat. Hopefully the boat will still float.

I used to use Yetis, but switched to RTICs. Every bit as good, if not better. Common sense rules when using these coolers... Most importantly, keep them out of direct sunlight. Minimize the number of times the cooler is opened. Use quality ice packs in addition to loose ice. Mix frozen and cold foods, if possible. Throw an blanket or other insulating layer over to cooler to keep it cooler. My RTIC will keep items cold for seven days if I treat it carefully. The best my Yeti will do is five days. Be smart and use common sense.

We bought our Yeti when they were the only one on the market, it’s that old.. and keeps our food cold for 5 days out.. pre-cool it, then use a 10lb block of ice, add food, then cover everything with another 10 to 15lbs of cubes... I do drain ours. The cooler is mounted permanently in our trailer and I have the drain plumbed to a spigot mounted outside the trailer.. 5 days later in the desert heat, the block of ice was about the size of a fist...

The IGLOO IMX 70 is a true 70 qt cooler. Yeti's are always smaller than advertised. Just picked one up at ACE for $179 (200 with tax) It's huge and weighs a lot esp when filled. 7 day ice retention claim. I don't know about you but saving $150 on a cooler buys a LOT OF BEER!

Good advice for any quality cooler. I have several Engels and I'm perfectly happy with them. By the way, putting some salt water in and mixing it well will drop the temps in your cooler.

    • @dericlamp1
      @dericlamp1 4 роки тому +3

Salt will just melt the ice. The freezing point of salt water is lower than distilled water, but that doesn't make it colder - just colder with out freezing. Also, the specific heat of distilled water is higher than salt water, so distilled water ice is better at keeping things cool.

Yeti costs 10 times that of an ordinary cooler but doesn't offer 10 times the performance.
Just add sheet foam insulation to your Coleman or Igloo and you'll have very similar cold performance. Some people put foam on the inside which eats up space. I advocate adding insulation to the outside which will accomplish the same thing. Concentrate on the bottom and the lower side areas where the losses are greatest.

Except Yeti's design overall is just a culmination of other people's work in the refrigeration ,insulation industry and military style hard travel cases: I.E. a set of designs they can not fully patent as other people have already done so before them.
( you can patent the alterations to the original designs but not the concept of each part as that has been filed and approved by previous business ventures before Yeti existed as a company. this is essentially proof via existing art assets / origin of design which is VERY important in patent law. )
Or the fact that a good chunk of Yeti's coolers are made in their China factories . Yeti has manufacturing facilities both in the US and PRC.
Or the fact that Yeti is known to overcharge for what is essentially a rotomolded case, a gasket 2, rubber lid securing strips, a drain plug, foam insulation rope ( or in their smaller coolers a metal tube with a foam carry handle cover. ( Seriously a yeti cooler on average costs about 4 to 8 dollars worth of materials and and about 6-10 dollars in labor to assemble.)...hardly worth the 180 -400 USD.
I like Yeti coolers , I sell Yeti coolers , I've owned Yeti coolers. They make good products but it's mostly a "status symbol" to the fans, but if someone comes along offering a similar or better product at a lower price point ...
Yeti does not pay me for "loyalty" , they don't cut my checks, so I sure as hell am not obliged to step up to bat for them , nor am I going to wear their hats or use their stickers,ect...if they were to sponsor my paintball , racing , fishing , and hunting trips then sure I'll vouch for them and wear their logo as they are paying for that ad space.
But until then why should I hold any emotional investment to a company who does not give a damn about me or does not know that I exist?
I might use their product but it does not mean a damn thing to them and they don't mean anything past their product to me. This applies to ALL companies .

EDIT: this was a reply to reignick1133. I hate that UA-cam comments stopped appearing directly beneath the comment to which they were a reply. Google, eat shit with your confusing 'upgrades'. ; ]
There's nothing particularly novel about a cooler, even though only a small percentage of design alteration is required for new patent issuance. Filing frivolous applications like that was a game, and probably still is, making a nice chunk of change for private lawyers and the Patent and Trademark Office for years. The system was absolutely bottlenecked with ridiculous applications and claims of patent worthiness, which taxed the resources of patent examiners and made the approval process infamously years-long. Look at some of the inane shit you'll find in your general travels that was patented, or is 'patent applied for'. This makes me wonder if any of these cooler features were actually awarded patents. I think the loophole you're basically referring to is what prohibits something like mounting wheels, invented thousands of years ago, and wanting to claim patent protection for a cooler that rolls.
There are design patents and utility patents. Coca-Cola's iconic bottle shape is an example of a design patent. I was in the research process for my own patent application several years ago, and more recently I dropped the ball on a trademark approval I'd been awarded, so I'm out of the loop, and I was never an intellectual property attorney. Whatever it's worth. ; ]
Screw these Bubbas like 1OFGODSOWN who whine about needing lowest-cost goods from the likes of China because they're on a 'fixed retirement income'. Retirement from what? Yeah -- a fuckin' American job that paid a decent or at least livable wage for the 40 years they worked it.
I posted a comment on a Coolers on Sale video, wanting to know how may of their test coolers -- in sheer numbers of brands that baffled me -- were American-made. I'd buy, and would like to manufacture, an American product that faultlessly kicks ass at the highest level of quality, even if it has a smaller audience due to an understandably higher price. I'm with you on the point of finding it unethical to be selling a China-made American product to American citizens at egregious markups. Apple, anyone? Maybe there's an 800-dollar, patented iCooler that takes selfies.

Yeti the over priced cooler. Get a RTIC and use ice packs on the bottom and lay ice on top. It will keep your ice for a couple days longer.

Thought I read something about YETI suing RTIC for copying there design and that lead to YETI owning a percentage of RTIC or something like that.

Cubed ice paired with reusable freezer packs actually gives you the longest results (there are tests on UA-cam about it)

You would be correct. However with having to keep it level properly ventilated and POWERED it would not work well on a boat been there tried that and was pissed off with it. Maybe it’s good for camping if you have you’re vehicle near you. But for long range hunting or hiking not very good. Nice try tho.

No, keep water in until end of trip. Water is super cold and will last forever

  • @sbeutler

Leave the drain plug open. Your cooler will be colder by letting the water out. That's Heat Exchange 101.
