I’ve heard John speak on this a few other times, in person and via podcast. This iteration, though, adds the notion of “feeling”. Great stuff.

His philosophical background coming to the surface. The sun analogy is straight David Hume, problem of induction.

Yes i enjoyed that analogy as well. This video was too good not to share. Main reason i wanted to share it here is to keep it because if i save it in some random drive it will get forgotten or something. As a Christian i found it interesting how the Bible teaches the exact same thing about faith as John teaches about confidence. That it's a rational response to fact, rather than some ambiguous feeling to be attained in a vacuum. Fascinating stuff.

That's right! Nice analogy. His language (e.g., "justified belief," "rationality/irrationality,") conjures to my mind the field of epistemology. And also certain views about mental states: that part of what defines mental states are the conditions under which having them is rational or irrational. If we understand confidence as having a belief that one has a high probability that one will succeed in a given endeavor, then that belief can be more or less justified based on the evidence. I love his discussion of folks (like me) who often have the evidence that they will succeed but nevertheless lack confidence. The tricky part of this confidence analysis is where to fit attitudes like "fake it til you make it," which suggests that you ought to display false confidence in certain endeavors and, surprisingly, that doing so can be a way of developing success. I wonder how John would fit that trope into his framework? Maybe "fake it til you make it" is just a snappy way of saying, "Practice!" In any event, as a professor of philosophy, John "speaks" my language, and its music to my ears.

@@PlaciSantos I'm a wavering Christian myself. If you like reading, you should read Kierkegaard's book "Fear and Trembling." He argues the exact opposite about faith -- that faith and reason are completely separate. I'm not saying I believe that myself but he gives an interesting perspective using the Abraham and Isaac narrative as his main talking point.
