This is a great camera. Its one of my best video cameras. i use for almost everything from Movies, Documentary, Music Videos, Events ...in fact everything. It never fails. battery can last long. Its a must have camera. Great review man. You said it all
I was thinking about getting this c100. I own exact Canon in Canon g30 camcorder. Atomos hooked in and wifi is same, the only thing this has is clog and lenses interchange. My lens is fixed with 1.2 wide apt. Lens 20x zoom but zoom is great. Full control of exposure. Added a 7 inch desview r7p monitor 1000nit just for wav form option and pinch zoom. I have 3 Canon lenses and 4k is a gimmick.
Thanks Caleb for taking the time to help out a fellow videographer. When it comes to videocameras, there's so much buzz ie 4k, ultra slow mo etc that is hard to put things in perspective. We are so spoiled nowadays! This camera may be an entry level Cinema camera but is a good one. It just needs some tweaks. Thanks for the help!
Thank you for this review Caleb, I bought last year the 5DMkiii and have loved it ever since since I primarily use it for video. I have been looking for something of an upgrade and do believe the C100 Mark II would be a great choice to go to. Thanks again for this in depth and awesome review!
fantastic review! So well done, this helped me make my decision thanks, I'll be ordering my C100 MK2 today! Would love to see a tutorial on Shotgun Mic recording tutorial direct into the C100 Mark II (Rode NTG or the Sennheiser MKH-416) along with monitoring audio, have previously tried with some issues & your tutorials are always so easy to understand.
+verybloom Fantastic. It is a steal right now in my opinion with the $1,000 instant rebate, bringing it down to $4,500. Good idea for a shotgun mic tutorial too. The main thing is to have a shock mount for the shotgun mic, a short, 1 foot-ish XLR cable, and plug in right into the camera. Hope that helps!
This is about the 4th time Ive watched this video, lots of great info. Ive actually changed my mind from the mk i to the mk ii. Looking to purchase sometime in November.
Great review, loads of info and helpful tips (e.g. overexposing shadow slightly) saved me hours of reading forums etc, and well done making such a long video interesting! A review a year later is always more useful than "out of the box" reviews.
+Sai Kelly Thank you Sai. I really appreciate the kind words and support. I don't think I'll ever be the "first" person to get a review out, so instead I'm focusing on making my reviews the best ones out there, based on actually using the camera, not just listing out specs.
You any experience with Atomos gear? I've a deal where they're throwing in a Ninja Star (not the throwing kind!) but i've requested a Ninja Blade instead (not the stabby one). There is a price difference of course so im happy to make the difference. I've read good things about it but would love to hear a user's opinion.
Even in 2020 I still use this cinema camcorder! If you want to work quickly, with a crew or solo it only informs you more about making a scene or shooting a movie, it's the Swiss army knife camcorder, great quality and colour, makes you think creatively and effectively, it's got small file sizes and picture able to satisfy any client, not many desire or view at 2k let alone 4k++...Battery that lasts all day....cheap media that runs for hours, looks the part...It's the best budget film makers camcorder in my view and that's why I got one.
A C100 MK3 with 4K 8 bit & or 10 bit would be perfect for me. We shoot all our interviews in 4K so we can crop in and out to help hide cuts and make it more interesting so it has become a necessity for us really for single camera interviews
Hi Caleb, thanks. Just stumbled across your useful channel. It was helpful to see the size of the C100 mk 2 on screen displays and the flexible positioning of the lcd. The available camera choices in this price range have got very confusing if starting out and it is very usefup to have someone cutting through the pro's and con's. Also a good idea to keep it simple - three good points, three not so good. Thanks again. Bob.
+Dan The Doge You're welcome. This definitely wasn't and still isn't an insignificant amount of money to me either. Hence 20+ minutes talking about it. :)
I bought mine around the same time you did! Admittedly, I watched this just to hear someone else say good stuff about it, as I think it's great! Bummer about the limited AF lenses, but even still...Face recognition on a wide open lens??! That's crazytown.
After watching this video, I have decided to go with the EOS 100 MK ii. I am wondering though, for a decent lens, It will come with an EF 24-105mm. For filming inside breweries and street interviews, would you stick with just that lens or recommend anything different? I see there are a few lens's out there for this camera, IE 24mm, 50mm, 85mm prime lens as well as the EF 16-35mm, EF 24-70mm and EF 70-200mm. Im just wondering if the stock EF 24-105mm will be good.
24-105 is solid. I used that 80% of the time when this was my main camera. Pick up the cheap 10-18mm EF-S lens for ultrawides and you'll be able to capture pretty much anything.
I also have the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 and it is amazing. I also picked up the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 which is excellent on the C-100 MKII. This is a faster lens and let’s in more light in dark conditions. If you are on a tripod filming an interview or a gimbal, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 rocks. It’s autofocus is noisy so you’ll want a boom mic with it.
Thanks for the video, and YES, I watched to the end ...LOL I'm really thinking about buying this camera, but as you mentioned in your video, I'll better check out other cameras before I take the final decision. Thanks again !
That's awesome! I watch entire camera reviews before buying too. ;) Definitely try to rent or borrow one of each camera you're considering and go from there!
I wish I would know where to rent one. I don't think someone would barrow a camera like that one... :D Btw, what camera and software did you use for recording and editing this video? Pretty good quality...
i ordered the C100 II, yesterday € 4399,- include Ninja Star, CF Card Atoms 64 GB and Card Reader. I have the 5DIII ad a GH4 ad the C100II i bought about the Focussystem.
Humble Pie I hope so. i really like the footage of this camera but I keep hearing from industry people that everyone wants 4k footage to future proof their work.
last comment..promise..WDR does have some noise...lots less than most cameras I have used...but I set the noise reduction to 3 has recommended in some forums and that helped a lot..my main lens is a 18-135STM but the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is fabulous! can't afford cinema lenses..
c100 or g7 which would you buy for recording lectures. The Camera would be any where between 12-30 feet away from the lecturer. Videos would be uploaded to youtube. Now I use a canon T5i rebel, but it has the cut off at 30 minutes and I have to sync with external audio. I would like to have an all in one unit.
I see a lot of you are torn because of the 4k not being an option. I have a question for you all, what are the broadcasting standards? If it's 4k, then yeah, I think we all should aim for 4k but 4k work spaces are still new and developing. Remember when the 24p came out? Anyway, as a filmmaker, the goal is to get my projects on online distribution platforms and broadcast television. Therefore, we all should be shooting in or close to it. If the television hasn't then should we? Thoughts...
Great video! I just ordered my C100 mark II a couple days ago. Since its release it has come down in price. I paid $4100 and it was bundled with the Atomos Ninja 2 Recorder/Monitor.
Now THAT WAS A DEAL ! Would you mind telling me where you purchased it from ? My email is santigrullon@me.com or just reply to this email if you can, thank you.
Thank you ! Was just looking at it but sadly I have no lens so I would have to look into buying a lens thanks ill look at what would be my best option , appreciate it.
Hello! We are wedding videographers and do a 3 camera shoot at the ceremony. We usually go two monopods up near bride and groom and one wide camera in the back. We also deal with a lot of low light or no light at all during the reception, relying on our LED lights on top of our cameras. Does anyone recommend either C100 mark 2 or Cannon 50d Mark 4?? Thanks!
Another great video. Watched this in 2018 and am considering it now, although, who knows perhaps Canon might come out with a C100 M3 (I live and hope!). C200 is too expensive for me. Very thorough, and useful. Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much for this review! really helped me out and very beneficial. One thing You forgot to mention, which I hear about the C100, is there is no capabilities in shooting in 50p, 60p, so no slow motion, unlike the Canon C100 Mark ii, Which really was a huge thing for me. But awesome video, Thanks again.
I'm actually fine using DSLRs/Cinema cameras. It's just the price that makes it very difficult. Plus I don't have a lot of lenses to buy just to use this. It's a great cinema camera don't get me wrong, but I just think The XA30 is still consider my favorite Canon Camcorder despite the backlash on the quality.
Hi, thanks for this review. I came across your review as I am doing a search for cameras to use for a documentary project at the end of this year in Africa. My plan is to rent this camera or the first C100 with the dual pixel autofocus upgrade with a Canon XC10 and sony RX10 II (for 120 and 240fps Slow motion) How is the picture quality and low light between this camera and the previous C100? Like I said earlier it's for documentary shoot, so autofocus, continuous shooting, good to OK low light and good picture quality are my top priorities, is there any other camera you can recommend or a better option?
Low light capabilities are pretty similar to the Mark 1. The DPAF is great to have though. Only other documentary style camera I would recommend would be the Sony FS5.
Thanks for the great review. I've had the c-100 MKII for a week now, and the video was helpful. I'm disappointed, like you, that Canon didn't add more lenses that offer face recognition. I heard back from a Canon tech rep today who said, "To my knowledge there are no plans to incorporate the remainder of Canon's lenses into that particular feature, as STM is needed for that to occur. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you." It's a shame because the 80D does without any problem, AND it has a touch screen so you can rapidly point to the object you want the lens to focus - the 80D is also about a quarter of the price too. I do documentaries where subjects being interviewed often use hand gestures or move their heads/bodies... so it sounds like I need to invest in one of the STM lenses. You mentioned in the video that you were planning on adding another STM lens. Do you have a recommendation lens for interviews? I'm leaning toward the 18-135mm.
+Steven Roby Yeah, and the 70D does it too with any lens. Inconsistency between Canon camera features is a major annoyance. Especially when dropping $5,500 on a camera as I did to see $1,000 cameras of theirs do video features, like face autofocus, better. As for what lens, the only STM one I have is the 10-18mm. Not the best quality out there and can't get super shallow, but function or beauty is needed sometimes. I think the 18-55 goes shallower than the 18-135.
Canon is notorius for dropping prices too. I bought a 5D III a few years ago, and after the holidays they lowered the price. The same has happened with this camera.I'm not wild about the tiny audio wheels on the handel... and on they're on the side too! It's a pleasure though not to worry about a DSLR splitting the video filesor limiting the time you can continously shoot.
Solid review, thanks. Your saying "low light isn't the greatest". Most of the C100 II reviews out there reporting different experiences, just the opposite findings to yours. I've seen clips from the C100 II at ISO 102.400 with acceptable/usable noise. Which could be expected as the sensor has a pixel size of 6.4 micron, which is quite big.
+Wolfgang Ernst It depends on your expectations I guess. There is a lot of noise in the shadows even at the base ISO of 850. Usable, but no where need as clean as other cameras out there at base ISO. At high ISO I think it performs better than most though. I should have been more specific in the review. :)
thanks, Caleb, yes my expectations are high, especially on the low light side of the C100 II. If ISO 850 is "usable" only I wouldn't consider this cam at all. So far I've been renting the C100 II twice for daylight operation only, I found no issues at ISO 200 - 400 (of course not). The whole camera concept fits well in my on-man-band production scheme. Please have a look on this Video: youtubePOINTcom (followed by) "/watch?v=DuVT9MJrBvM"What do you think? Is there any trick? Is ISO 102400 a fake? I'm more than confused, because I trust your solid review findings.
+Wolfgang Ernst using a low ISO like 200 will give you less noise in the shadows on the c100 ii because it gives you more latitude and dynamic range into the shadows. Whereas 850 and up are optimized to get you more latitude into saving the highlights from being blown out. By usable I mean it is solid and good. You're not going to get a noiseless image without a bigger sensor or more pixels packed in there.
Good video. Now 4 years later. I am a little torn between a C100 Mk II and a JVC HM620. The JVC doesn't have interchangeable lenses so no blurry backgrounds but it's all in one. UA-cam or Yukou videos for me to start. Any thoughts?
Hey Caleb. Great review. Your vid is still very relevant in 2019, as the C100 MkII still seems to be holding its own. Although discounted from years ago, the body is still going for $3,500, which is no small piece of change.. And while there are less expensive, more capable offerings, the $64,000 question is this: if you didn't need 4k workflow, would you still buy the Mark II today?
If I NEEDED 4K, the answer would have to be no, because it doesn't record in 4K. Although, the sensor is 4K downscaling to 1080p so for plenty of videos I have upscaled on export to 4K and I think it looks better than a lot of cameras that record in 4K on a tiny sensor.
@@CalebWojcik So, the answer is actually, YES, given you don't necessarily need to work in 4K. Personally, I love the camera. Another quick question: If you were going to go 4K, which camera would you lean toward? Would you stick with Canon?
It's worth mentioning the Sony FS5, and surprised you didn't. Had this not come into existence I would agree with most of what you say and would seriously consider buying the C100 MkII. I really only need HD. But the FS5 blows way the C100ii - especially for HD (the internal codecs somewhat limit its use for 4K without an external recorder). Since the C100 ii price drop the FS5 looks less of a bargain, but in terms of functionality its worth the extra IMHO.
I talked about the FS5 in this video at 20:45. I agree it would be another solid option, it just wanted out or announced when I invested in the C100 ii.
Sorry, Caleb - I missed that somehow. In any case, yours was a very worthwhile and detailed review. I guess I was slightly split over the two cameras and now at a decision point in what to buy, but leaning in favour of the FS5. Thanks again.
Amazing video tutorial, thank you. I have moved to purchase the Mark II C100. You listed a few canon lens, I have a few pro canon lens, 85mm 1.2, 24-70 IIL and 135mm f2.8 II L, will these work with the c100 Mark II body! Ty!
and WDR is my favourite picture profile. I downloaded a few more which give the pic a bit more "punch" but WDR is one that allows for some color grading. I haven't tried Canon Log...
Two questions Caleb please 1. The camera featured in your Amazon affiliate link for the Canon EOS C100 Mark II is NOT actually the Mark II or is it? 2. The other thing I am confused about is that you mentioned the two pixel autofocus upgrade? Is that an upgrade I have to buy in addition to the Canon EOS C100 Mark II or, are you saying that this upgrade is included in the Mark II but not in the Mark I? Thanks you for your help…..
1. Good catch, looks like that page must have updated or something. Just fixed the link. 2. The dual pixel autofocus comes as a default with the c100 Mark II, on the Mark I they have versions with and without DPAF, so you have to make sure to check on that when you're buying one. Hope that helps!
great review my friend,I've just started to use video cameras and gone into the deep end a little and got this camera without knowing to much about filming,I notice when I go to edit the colours are very dull,do you have any info or maybe a setting that I need to adjust my friend?
+Mark Zola81 I would double check which picture profile you are recording in. If you are filming using Wide DR or Cinema Log, you'll need to do color grading to the footage to increase the highlights, lower the shadows, and sometimes add saturation. Hope that helps!
Is there a way to reassign the function dial on a C100 MKII? I almost never use iris to change exposure. Gain setting would be a much more useful function for this dial.
Very nice breakdown as I'm torn between getting a pro 4K (Perhaps Canon or Panasonic) Camcorder or opting for the much bigger sensor for better low-light and cinematic-type look when I need it. I do weddings and documentaries mostly when I do video. Been a pro-photogapher for years. Caleb; Thoughts, suggestions??? My primary photo is 7D Mark II have some Canon glass but currently only one L lens.
not sure if you still use the c100 ii, did you get a chance to try a EF-S lens like the 17-55mm? If so does it crop in? The sensor in this camera is only slightly larger then the APS-C so I was wondering how that worked? Haven't been able to find out how it handles EF-S lens and what the effect is.
Will it face track with the new EF 24-105mm f/4 IS USM ii? I have a handful of lenses, the only one I have on the face tracking list is the 55-250 and wondering if I should pick up another from the list for weddings
Great Review.. .. What camera do you suggest for these type options and also shooting stills, such as modeling and weddings and sports.. Looking to get great video footage for fitness and dance .. and on the other hand take stills for other things.. people , nature etc.. thanks..
Hi Caleb! Only bad thing is no 25p over HDMI :( With Atomos Ninja Blade must set pulldown , I see some lose a little bit from image quality with 50i to 25p. Send email to Canon to add 25p over HDMI but they don''t care about us. Last firmware was not came with 25p. :(
Do you fill it is a really big issue having the 1.5x crop in the C100 compared to the fullframe sensor on the mkIII for filming? I am jumping from 70D/700D to C100 or maybe MKiii, but I honestly find to be a bit troublesome when you can't get a real wide view due to the crop. By the way, nice review, your channel deserve much more than just 4.7k subscribers :)
+Nicholas Rodriguez It has been annoying for a while, even with having a 20mm or a 24mm, but I just picked up the 10-18mm EF-S and it is wider than I ever need. And it is cheap too. Also, if you're coming from the 70D, it has basically the same crop factor that you're used too.
hello Bro,, i have some problem my lense , when i change the new lense , they have double drop 2 times from line in .i think , they have some button ,change some where , how can i fix it, ..tell me ,,thank you
Caleb hav eyou ever used any JVC video cameras in either form factors? Just curious to know what your opinion is on the C100 Mk 2 and some of the JVC 4K handheld and shoulder mounted form factor cameras. Thanks!
If I want BOTH an external recorder for 422 pro res and a decent external monitor, which is the optimal Atomos offerings (i.e., functionality vs. cost) to get for the C100 Mk II? Thanks.
Caleb, that's a wonderful review - quite tolerant and unbiased. I see you've spend some time to put things together. I do get tired from Canon-haters and would have been perfectly fine with downscaled 4k to 1080p, and think that would be enough "protection" for canon higher C Lines BUT couldn't cope with next things: - 8 Bit color. It's ridiculous. I understand that they are not putting it in Dslr to protect C-line, but why do C100 is crippled with absence of at least 10 bit 422 internal and 12 4444 external? "Cinema 8 bit Cmon, haven't really seen yet any clip with really cinematic grade from c100. What I'm seing is DSLR on steroids. Keying with 8bit is also not really easy. - 60 fps. Huge Bummer. 120 internal and 180\240 external is absolutely doable in 1080p. - No Clog 2 and Clog 3. If C300 is 4k and have it, C100 is downsampled 4K could have it. DR is really far from what you can pull out of FS5 or even A7s - New "richier" MXF codec, that is in XC and ProRES - Price in 2016 with all features mentioned above should be around 3-3,5K I think that would be ultimate "cinema" 1080p camera and implementing mentioned above features didn't really need any major hardware upgrade (aside at least one CF (not Cfast) or UHS-II slot) and probably better digic 5 prossesor (which is in 2K XC-series 1'' camcoder) Seriously considered it but went different direction. Colors is good (i woudn't fell on knees and shouting about "CANON COLOR SCIENCE") But it's definitely better that Sony. Due to 10 and 12 Bit, BM gives a home run to c100 though. Ergonomics is great. Reliability and service is miles ahead of sony and BM. And their lenses are great too. Off course Global shutter is a welcome feature but i understand that canon doesn't have technology at this price point currently. So I'm really gutted that I'ts just a bit of software work needed to deliver cinematic quality pictures and slo-mo. You review is very comprehensive though. Would love to see more.
Caleb- I have my C100mk2 for a week or so. I can not for the life of me understand if my camera is defective or not. I have noise even in 850 in well lit environments, indoors and out. I have tried over 20 plus profiles and tweaked some of my own. Any advise besides sending it back for another one? Also, what camera did u use for this video and what settings? and CP used? and what codec did you use to upload to YT. Thanks. -John
+John Massaria The first thing I would do is black balance your camera. (ABB in the menus.) Turn your camera on and put it in the ISO setting you shoot at normally (850 for me) and wait 10 minutes. Then with the body cap on, run the ABB. That helps a lot. I tend to see noise mostly in underexposed areas too, so filming in wide DR or Canon's cinema log helps with that a bit. Or overexpose a little bit then drop the black/shadow levels in post to almost crushed. Hope that helps! I just learned these things a few months ago and it helped improve the quality of the image a lot.
Hi Caleb, have any sense to buy a Canon C100 Mark II in 2017? I'm tired of using dsrl's for video, but I'm afraid the C100's could be old technology and Canon may launches a new model with 4K this year. As I usually use it for live events, I do not really need 4K, but I do not want to lose money investing in old equipment. Thanks!
Thanks Caleb, I think it's a good idea, only that I will travel in March to USA and I wanted to take the opportunity. In the meantime I will try the Canon XC15, your video on the XC10 was very useful. Perhaps with the new improved audio will be a good complement to a future Mark III. Great channel, congratulations!!
if I understand correctly during my research, nearly none of my EF Canon lenses (most of them L glass) will operate in face detection, only standard AF? Nearly everybody is waiting for a major upgrade of the C100 in NAB, but I am currently more tempted by 1-inch cameras like the Sony NX100
This is a great camera. Its one of my best video cameras. i use for almost everything from Movies, Documentary, Music Videos, Events ...in fact everything. It never fails. battery can last long.
Its a must have camera.
Great review man. You said it all
My will is buy an of them Canon C100 Mark II, after watch this awesome video.
This was really helpful. Thanks for helping me make my decision, Caleb!
+Akeem Lawanson You're welcome!
I appreciate the quick review right in the beginning. Thanks for that!
Great job Caleb. Best review on this camera out there.
+Ryan Urlacher Thank you Ryan. I really appreciate the kind words.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Very useful info provided in a balanced, fair minded way. Appreciate your effort.
This is probably one of the most helpful videos I've seen on the c100 II. Great information, great comparison, and I appreciate the honesty.
+Tom Dallis Thank you for the kind words Tom!
Great review! Thanks for taking the time to be so thorough.
+Erick Perdomo Totally agree. A sharper, newer tool doesn't necessarily make you a better carpenter. :)
It’s 2023 and I am considering this camera…4k sensor so you will be the best 1080P…
Thank you for this review Caleb, I bought last year the 5DMkiii and have loved it ever since since I primarily use it for video. I have been looking for something of an upgrade and do believe the C100 Mark II would be a great choice to go to. Thanks again for this in depth and awesome review!
+Kandu Films Going from a 5D to a C100 is amazing. Especially the mark ii. You won't be disappointed.
fantastic review!
Thanks for this! This helped convince me this would be an upgrade from my 5d3!
Great review Caleb. All the info I was looking for and more. If I had the money I'd jump all over this device.
+PinnacleStudioPro Thanks for the kind words. :)
+Caleb Wojcik well in my opinion, this is what a review should be by very definition. It's thanks to this that I've decided to go buy one!
Sai Kelly Make sure you tell Canon that for me. ;)
lol absolutely.
Excellent review Caleb! Thanks for taking the time and sharing your expertise.
+Lee Fletcher Sure thing. Happy to help.
c100 with Atomos Ninja PERFECT
Very informative video indeed. It clarified several things for me such as the lenses that can be used for face-tracking and auto-focusing.
Fantastic. Glad it was helpful.
Great review! Thanks for the in-depth look!
+Video Creators Thanks Tim, I appreciate the support. :)
Bob.
You're welcome Bob, thank you for the kind words.
Great video, this is exactly the sort of info I want to know before spending what is, to me a not insignificant amount of money. Thanks!
What's it like in low lighting, night time?
It is decent. Not crazy good at high ISO like an a7S ii, but solid.
thank u so much for take the time and do a deep review, great video, very informative, help me a lot... Waiting for more content.
+German Dohrmann You're welcome. I enjoy making in-depth videos like this. :)
Really really great overview - I am considering this and think I will be picking up now.
+Bill Nichols Fantastic. Glad I could help.
Caleb this was very helpful as I kept looking at the C100 but wan't quite sure. Thank you.
You're welcome William. :) Glad to help.
Really useful and well made review, thanks!
+Default Name You're welcome. Happy to help. :)

I watch entire camera reviews before buying too. ;)
Definitely try to rent or borrow one of each camera you're considering and go from there!
Caleb Wojcik
Sure, I will !
I wish I would know where to rent one. I don't think someone would barrow a camera like that one... :D
Btw, what camera and software did you use for recording and editing this video? Pretty good quality...
***** When making this I filmed with a C100 Mark II or 5DM3's and edit in Premiere.
You can rent this camera at LensProToGo or BorrowLenses.
I love your video, everything is so well said! I'm gonna hold for a while before buying!
i ordered the C100 II, yesterday € 4399,- include Ninja Star, CF Card Atoms 64 GB and Card Reader. I have the 5DIII ad a GH4 ad the C100II i bought about the Focussystem.
+Luis Messner You won't be disappointed. This will be a big upgrade.
Rumor has it, a new C100 will be announced this year. Possibly being able to shoot in 4k and other upgraded specs.
+Erick Perdomo I'm a fan of Wide DR also, as you don't need as much grading done to it. Noise reduction in camera is helpful too. Thanks for the tips!
Great review but Im torn between this camera and the sony A7SII any thoughts? I shoot mostly music video..use a gimbal..and sometimes wedding.
+FlashOneFilms If you hang tight for a few more days, my a7s ii review will be out and in it I address the exact comparison (c100 ii vs. a7s ii).
+Caleb Wojcik awesome looking forward to it!!
c100 or g7 which would you buy for recording lectures. The Camera would be any where between 12-30 feet away from the lecturer. Videos would be uploaded to youtube. Now I use a canon T5i rebel, but it has the cut off at 30 minutes and I have to sync with external audio. I would like to have an all in one unit.
Awesome review! Thank you very much for this. Hoping to buy this in the (near of far) future :)
I purchased mine from B&H photo. www.bhphotovideo.com I believe this bundle is for a limited time only. You might want to act fast bro.
The actual total price is $4099.00 that's with free shipping and no tax.
Thank you ! Was just looking at it but sadly I have no lens so I would have to look into buying a lens thanks ill look at what would be my best option , appreciate it.
You're welcome bro!
Thanks!
If you strictly shoot video, and don't need the ability to shoot still photographs, I'd go with a C100 II all the way.
Thanks very useful - how about a tutorial on shooting and processing c-log with the C100.
+mark shirley We made one here: ua-cam.com/video/gzN_aqfyp9o/v-deo.html
Caleb Wojcik - can you touch focus on this model or does it only focus in the middle of the frame.
Only in the middle. Also, it isn't a touch screen, you have to assign a button.
Thanks for the video Caleb!!
Another great video. Watched this in 2018 and am considering it now, although, who knows perhaps Canon might come out with a C100 M3 (I live and hope!). C200 is too expensive for me. Very thorough, and useful. Thanks for posting.
I just picked one up for £760 😇
What camera are you using to record this video? It is so sharp...
C100 II
You look so sharp in this video. And the footage is really cool looking. How did you get that and which camera did you use?
Really helpful review, thank you 👍🏻😀
You're welcome!
Thanks--I had an a7R IV in my cart but nixed for the C100MK2. Cheers
Great review!
Nice vid. Thanks.
C100 mk 1 and mk 2 differences, you forgot to add wifi for the differences list.
Crazy awesome info. Thank you
Thank you so much for this review! really helped me out and very beneficial. One thing You forgot to mention, which I hear about the C100, is there is no capabilities in shooting in 50p, 60p, so no slow motion, unlike the Canon C100 Mark ii, Which really was a huge thing for me. But awesome video, Thanks again.
u have 60i in c100 mk1 which can be painfully converted into 60p
I'm actually fine using DSLRs/Cinema cameras. It's just the price that makes it very difficult. Plus I don't have a lot of lenses to buy just to use this. It's a great cinema camera don't get me wrong, but I just think The XA30 is still consider my favorite Canon Camcorder despite the backlash on the quality.
Yeah, an XA30 is easier to use in general, I just don't ever feel like the footage is very cinematic and I want interchangeable lenses.
Hi, thanks for this review. I came across your review as I am doing a search for cameras to use for a documentary project at the end of this year in Africa.
My plan is to rent this camera or the first C100 with the dual pixel autofocus upgrade with a Canon XC10 and sony RX10 II (for 120 and 240fps Slow motion)
How is the picture quality and low light between this camera and the previous C100?
Thank you for your in depth review.
You're welcome. :)
Such a good review! Thank you
+Ladderwalker you're welcome!
Good video. Now 4 years later. I am a little torn between a C100 Mk II and a JVC HM620. The JVC doesn't have interchangeable lenses so no blurry backgrounds but it's all in one. UA-cam or Yukou videos for me to start. Any thoughts?
Get the canon.
Thank you for the excellent review.
Sorry, you’re right. I meant yes. ☺️
And I would get a c200 if I needed 4K.
How do you feel about the 5d mark iv?
Compared to the c100?
Thanks again.
kipling1957 If I was choosing today I'd go FS5.
Hello Caleb, why would you go for the FS5 now? Is there any particular reason?
Ben Mensah 4K, higher framerates, more future options, etc.
This was super helpful Thank you !!!!!
Man WDR is too noisy! I regret using that profile on my early shots with C100. Go for log.
Yeah, poorly exposed Wide DR can be really noisy. Thanks for chiming in.
Thank You - Great Review - Much appreciated!
Nice review, thanks!
+Roar Tiger You're welcome. :)
Two questions Caleb please
+Caleb Wojcik thankyou my friend,I'll have a look thanks
Is there a way to reassign the function dial on a C100 MKII? I almost never use iris to change exposure. Gain setting would be a much more useful function for this dial.
Caleb - it's April 2017. Still recommend the camera? Thanks!
Yes. I'm about to buy a second one for B Cam actually. Until Canon announced a new entry level cinema EOS camera, this is my go to.
Thanks, Caleb! I appreciate your opinion. I'm about to pull the trigger thanks to you!
You will have no regrets.
Awesome review.. Thanks!!
+Benjamin Fredette You're welcome Benjamin.
not sure if you still use the c100 ii, did you get a chance to try a EF-S lens like the 17-55mm? If so does it crop in? The sensor in this camera is only slightly larger then the APS-C so I was wondering how that worked? Haven't been able to find out how it handles EF-S lens and what the effect is.
There is about a 1.6 crop, but EF-S are made for cropped sensors, so that 17 becomes about a 25mm.
Will it face track with the new EF 24-105mm f/4 IS USM ii? I have a handful of lenses, the only one I have on the face tracking list is the 55-250 and wondering if I should pick up another from the list for weddings
@Caleb Wojcik Do you still recommend it in 2020? I am new to video, was doing photography before. But for me autofocus is a key!
Learn manual focus.
Great Review.. .. What camera do you suggest for these type options and also shooting stills, such as modeling and weddings and sports.. Looking to get great video footage for fitness and dance .. and on the other hand take stills for other things.. people , nature etc.. thanks..
+Geaux Hood I think the best hybrid camera on the market right now is the Sony a7r ii.
Thank you
Ok this question is at the beginning, but cutting to the chase ,how is the zoom?
Thank you Caleb, great review, great information. What to do....I'm still pulling my hair out. I do love the image from the C100 though.
+Ringo Harlow I'd rent one and try it out. I like LensProToGo.com or LensRentals.com
Hi Caleb! Only bad thing is no 25p over HDMI :( With Atomos Ninja Blade must set pulldown , I see some lose a little bit from image quality with 50i to 25p. Send email to Canon to add 25p over HDMI but they don''t care about us. Last firmware was not came with 25p. :(
Great video!
+Nicholas Rodriguez get a tokina 11-16mm, you won't need anything much wider unless you're going for fisheye...
Thanks!
+NORFIE123456 I have not. Sorry!
Great video 👌🏾
If I want BOTH an external recorder for 422 pro res and a decent external monitor, which is the optimal Atomos offerings (i.e., functionality vs. cost) to get for the C100 Mk II? Thanks.
Well I bought today canon c100 Mark II I supposed to RECEIVE tomorrow :) THANK U
+Micro Doulo Great! I hope you enjoy it. :)
Caleb, that's a wonderful review - quite tolerant and unbiased. I see you've spend some time to put things together.
I do get tired from Canon-haters and would have been perfectly fine with downscaled 4k to 1080p, and think that would be enough "protection" for canon higher C Lines BUT couldn't cope with next things:
- 8 Bit color.
DR is really far from what you can pull out of FS5 or even A7s
- New "richier" MXF codec, that is in XC and ProRES
- Price in 2016 with all features mentioned above should be around 3-3,5K
I think that would be ultimate "cinema" 1080p camera and implementing mentioned above features didn't really need any major hardware upgrade (aside at least one CF (not Cfast) or UHS-II slot) and probably better digic 5 prossesor (which is in 2K XC-series 1'' camcoder)
Seriously considered it but went different direction.
Great video, thanks for your time
You're welcome Ricky. :)
thank you for making this video
Great review thanks so much
Caleb- I have my C100mk2 for a week or so.
Thanks!
+Matias Contursi Great Question. I still think it is a great camera, but I'd wait till April/NAB to see if a mark 3 comes out.
Thanks Caleb for this excellent review.
What LUTs have you had the best luck with when shooting in Cinema mode?
+Jon Devine I usually grade from scratch as no LUT yet has given me a look I like more than what I can get manually.
thank you very much for this great review
+gaive junior You're welcome! Thanks for watching. :)
How long the battery life? Is it as long as the mark 1?
