This musical would have been better if it had been about the two mother's navigating how to deal with their son's mental health, trying to file through all the information that can be vague at best, misleading at worst. It could've taken a look at how mental illness doesn't see socio economic status or gender, and that no matter who you are you can struggle with this. And it could've framed it from the perspective of the mother's, who desperately want to help but just aren't sure how because it's hard. I think the musical would have been so much better and more impactful if it had done that.
Agreed. I honestly think they could’ve taken the suicide in a good direction too if it really had to happen, either with Connor and Evan actually being friends (which imo would’ve hit harder) or with them being friends just not best friends, more in the way that Evan and Jared are friends, and the Murpheys latch onto him as Connors only friend and while he likely knows more about their son than they do, they still weren’t as close as he’s leading people to believe. His motivation could be guilt from wishing he’d been a better friend and wanting to make up for it by giving the Murpheys closure, maybe he ends up developing feelings for Zoe during it. Still not a fan of the lying, but I’d be more invested in that morally grey complexity than in Evan just straight up exploiting a kid who took his own life because he wants to hook up with his sister.
