- Exploring the New Haven Crypt - New Haven Connecticut has a secret. Just over from Yale University, deep down under the Center Church on the green, lies an old cemetery. A crypt to be exact. This church was built in 1814 directly over an already ancient cemetery. Some of the graves date back into the 1600s. Interesting fact- The church was originally surrounded by grave stones, but over time, they were covered over, the tombstones removed, and grass was grown to create the current park the church now sits in. Amazing!

Irene Pierce new haven is full of it has u under tunnels that they locked down years ago, couple years ago a tree fell down and dead body on casket came out of the roots of tree. New haven green is a cemetery.
I visited here back in 92 I was in 2nd grade great learning experience

I thought this guy did a good job. I couldn't believe I have never heard of this place until now...and I've been to that city. They need to advertise/market this.

How respectful In my home town they built apartments over a graveyard. Just bulldozed everything down without a care in the world it was so sad.
I wouldn’t feel safe living in those appartements, to be fair. I’m not usually a superstitious person or believer in the paranormal, but if I were to live there, I feel like I’d be haunted by the ghosts of the individuals who’s graves were plowed over to build that.
as are most properties in CT ive found out actually. most of this info is represented in town libraries.

They should do a remake of that but and entire apartment building instead of just a house.
Well that's going to be super haunted apartments. People won't stay there long. They will lose money. In Texas years ago. They built an entire neighborhood over a huge cemetery and every one of the homes they built there became haunted with paranormal activity. So bad after a while that everyone moved out of the neighborhood and the homes became boarded up and abandoned. You just don't disrespect the dead and build over graves.
My great grandmother was a Brockett, descended from John Brockett, the man who surveyed, and laid out New Haven, Connecticutt, back in 1600s. I've visited New Haven, CT., will have to see this Yale University, one day.
In 2012, during Hurricane Sandy, a tree toppled, on the New Haven Green, and there was a skeleton tangled in its roots.

So there is a possibility that there are more graves out there. Just a wow it just blows my mind having been born with the veils open and it’s really kind of this is just very kind of creepy
No surprise. Many, many people are buried on the green.
I live in New Haven CT. (In fact, I'm sitting in my NH apartment right now watching this video, lol) I walk past this church on a daily basis. New Haven is also home to one of the largest and oldest graveyards in the country, directly opposite Yale University. It's packed with mausoleums and crypts. Interesting to have my home town featured on UA-cam.

I have never seen anything like this. At the start of this video I was certain I would be creeped out. That's not the case at all. the stones were beautiful, so intricate and we'll designed. I love history, the Edwardian and victorian periods are my favorite. I can almost imagine a backstory to each headstone and family represented. what a fantastic location!
They all had interesting stories! Most were some of the first families to live in that area!

My first thought when you said they built the building on top of a cemetery was, how disrespectful. I changed my mind when I saw how well it is being maintained and preserved. Fascinating.

Same here. I live about a 5 minute car ride away all my life and never knew of this. Bus stop is right in front of church. Definitely want to check it out! Lots of underground roads and passages underneath downtown New Haven area.

I didn't know there was a cemetery under the church on the green. There's a lot of Museums to visit. Oh, and we have the best pizza😊

Check out the history in different videos and photo stills of Bushnell Park in Hartford.Plus Hartfords's history from about at least 1890s onward.Much of the old streets were reconfigured and partly because of flooding(mostly redevelopment) There are places you almost feel you want to jump into to take a walk in these formerly countryside neighbourhoods.My maternal Grandma grew up there about a few years into the 20th century.
I've been in New Haven for 20 years. I knew about the Center Church and the crypt/cemetery underneath but I never had the time to see it yet. This is sort of like a virtual tour.
i grew up so close to the downtown new haven area , maybe 20 min walk or 5 min or less drive , there are so many historical sites in new haven and the surrounding areas , thanks for the video it's actually the first i've seen of anything other than the skull and bones house ty

I actually work for Ct Transit city bus in New Haven. I literally drive by and park in front of this church every day. I would of never guessed such a thing. How incredibly interesting. I wonder how many other drivers know? Great info. I appreciate this video.

I live in New Haven. Raised here. I knew the green was built over a graveyard but had no idea that the church had this in the basement. Very interesting to see some of the people who are buried there.
I use to take my children there when they did the tours at the church. So much history in New Haven that ppl don't know about
I was born, and raised in New Haven, heard about the graves in the basement of that church; but never been in it. Throughout my earlier life, and high school, I have been on The Green, but never been in that church. I didn't know Benedict Arnold's wife was buried there, thank you for the tour. A place I've passed numerous times; but never ventured in.
You should visit Gungywamp in Groton, CT. It is one of the oldest locations in the USA, dating back to 1200 B.C., and earler. It has stone structures, caves and tunnels. Very interesting place to visit!

it's called a columbarium. If you go to Los Angeles, visit Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral. Some modern churches are built with these structures.
In Europe lots of church crypts are underneath the buildingd

Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin has a similar crypt basement. It's where they buried their priests. Very old dark & creepy place.
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore City has a crypt directly underneath the altar. 9 out of 14 Archbishops of Baltimore are interred there.

I refused to go down there every school trip when I was kid it has always creeped me out, that and the fact the whole green is a graveyard but its an amazing and interesting piece of history

Used walk past that building everyday to cook 5 star meals for Yale grads and staff. Conneticut is quite gothic and dark. The history... The people now are bright.
I find it interesting that they preserved the cemetary under the church. I hope they preserved the headstones they removed
Most of the graves on the Green were brought to Grove St and placed in that ceremony

I grew up in New Haven and never knew about the crypt under the church you showed in this video. New haven is well known for Yale University is rich in history and many of our presidents went to this University. Thank you for the video. I have learned sonething new. BLESSINGS

@@hollywoodream30 Brandon Hall Cemetery off the Natchez Trace in MS. Fell in love with it, really. Metairie Cemetery in NOLA is amazing and unique in so many ways and I always enjoy visiting it, too.

I've lived in CT my entire life (65 yrs), I'm very interested in History and I never knew this existed! Once things ease up with Covid I will definitely be visiting this peaceful place. Thank you for your very respectful tour.

I use to live across from that church and never knew that was there in the basement.
We went down there when they were trying to save some of the headstones. As you noted, the moisture had affected the sandstone markers, making some unreadable and some had crumbled. They hadn't yet started work on removing the concrete flooring, so it is good to see that the new flooring of brick pavers is helping the moisture situation. Fun fact: I went there with a group of students and it was so quiet there during the day. However, while we were in the basement, apparently the organist had arrived to practice and the sound of the organ warming up totally freaked out some of the students who were already a bit squeamish about being in the crypt! They ran up those stairs so fast. Funny memory. Thank you for mentioning about the remaining graves that are unmarked in the New Haven Green. Every once in a while a big storm will come through and take out a tree on the green, pulling up skeletons from that time period. It always makes the news here and I always am surprised that people are shocked. They must not remember it was a giant cemetary!

It's a very beautiful thing to be able to look back to the past 300 plus years ago & pay our respects to those who came before us!! In a time that clearly defined us as a great nation!!
I would rather live in a world full of beautiful, peaceful cemeteries with green grounds and trees, carefully tended, than this world of parking lots and subdivisions where cemeteries used to be.
In our school it is used to be a cementary then a hospital then school and i promise you theres a lot of paranormal thing there i would even see sometomes a bloodful of old people ughh the last time i see one is last year with my friend and i cant wait too get out in that school in june ughh

Thank's for making this video. I visited New Haven and the Yale university June 15 this year. If I had known about the crypt I would have tried to take a look at it too. Since my kids and I traveled from Sweden to visit family in Shelton, CT this summer I probably never will have the opportunity to visit the crypt, so thanks again for showing it.

Wow! I worked in New Haven in the '90s and go to the West Haven VA once a month or so. I thought I knew CT History front to back and am well versed in New Haven Colony History, a subject I studied in College. To find out about this crypt was mind blowing! thanks for this tidbit of History about my home State!
great video well done I am currently restoring the top of the steeple Tower at this church I have been privileged to go down and see the tombstones myself in the Crypt. truly an amazing and historical place and I am honored to be able to work on this unbelievably historic project. BTW there are names in the bell tower of people who have worked on this in the 50s 60s and 70s. like I said amazing place to work on as I am in historical restoration this was one of the favorites that I have done by far.
Is there a list of names anywhere to acknowledge the deceased outside whose stones were removed? Really hoping so!

Very interesting, I've living in New Haven for around 16 years And I didn't even know this..!
I uncovered a couple of 1600s headstones in a cemetery still being used. I felt they should have the growth pulled off. Most would have never spotted them. Still pretty legible. Probably a family graveyard at first since they were the oldest and simple but deep carving.
Thanks for this upload my ancestors were from New Haven. I had noticed Dorothy Noyes was buried there. Several of these graves were my ancestors. My family came over on the Mayflower and that was were my connections came from

At first thought, this seems wrong and disrespectful. Watching the video I don't feel that way. It actually seems like a great way to preserve history and is very well maintained. I'm sure we all have seen historical cemeteries that look terrible, even overgrown to the point of being lost. This is exceptional and so well cared for.

Good grief, I have never see such old headstones in such good condition. Makes me sick they turned the rest of the cemetery into a park & just discarded the monuments to those people.

Across the street from the Veterans hospital in Baltimore is a big church with a cemetery. It's also where Eger Alan Poe was buried with his wife. There's a grave you look into where a hammic is- a sailor was once buried in the hammic. A general is there in a tomb from the War of 1812.
There's folks buried inside under the church but I don't know if anyone can go see that.
Near by is where Mr. Poe lived that you can visit & some times they give readings of his works there in a nice red brick building.
A lady that once gave readings there was in the upper part of the house & she was by herself when she said out loud how she hated Poe s work & a chair suddenly few at her- She left very quickly & never came back to pick up her check.
When you go through the church gate a big white monument for Poe is right there on the right side- but as you get to about the middle of the cemetery close to the church side is a headstone with Poe s name on it with a crow on it.
I wonder just how big the whole cemetery was back in the day before the modern streets were built & all.

This is amazing. I loved seeing 300 year old tombstones that look as they looked when they were made. It really makes you realize though, that for most people after a generation or two die after we do, nobody will even know we were here.
Has anyone added these to Find a Grave for ancestors to know where their ancestors are actually buried?
Before i even start watching this is my home town and has been all 19 years of my life. Never been to the crypts but ive wanted to go for years to see what its like. Its a big piece of new haven history that im not very knowledgable on compared to most of the other unique stories and historical landmarks in my city. Hopefully this video will get me to finally go and check it out!
