Apple has become so synonymous with "Anti Consumerism" and just general douchebag that I feel like we will soon be measuring those on an Apple scale. Like, for example Nvidia being "0.57 Apples" or something like that
I suppose the problem with GPUs is long term maintenance. You have shown us again how annoying it is to replace dried out thermal paste and the collateral replacement of thermal pads after a period of use to maintain thermals and performance. Thanks for the long hours and hard work guys.
So just fyi, those aren't ribbon cables, those are FFC's (flat flexible cable). Ribbon cable is what connects IDE drives. If you need to replace something searching "FFC cable (I know, it's redundant)" will get you way more love
I've used it to hold on my bumper bars (on cars obvi) and it lasted for years, even in the rain, it was the heat of the sun that made it go all stretchy in the end. I love that it's easy to tear and apply!
The 'flow guide' rim on the fan doesn't rob you of additional fin size as, without the guide, you'd still need the gap to allow for fan blade stretching over time. I suspect the rim may be as much to prevent this as to act as a flow guide, effectively turning the fan into an impeller.
Wonder why the thermal paste is so dry on a brand new card 😯 I thought it would get dry like that after long extensive use and not right outta the box!
TIP: Magnetize your screwdriver and it will help when removing the 4 small screws for the fan. It will also help tremendously when re-installing them since you will need to vertically insert them.
I hate the assembly of the reference cards, it's like taking apart an smartphone. I don't have any problem in doing it but just imagine doing a quick repaste that you could do in 5 min with only a philips screwdriver. With this card it could take solid 20 mins for someone knowing what's going on.
The paste for these things is dispensed in measured amounts with tooling, if the paste is that dry now it will probably dry out and crack quickly. Oem paste is very often pretty cheap.
Pretty sure the main consideration re: TIM viscosity is making sure it stays put during manufacturing, shipping, and sitting on store warehouse/store shelves.
The cooler is very Apple-like in its design. Very clean, but difficult to disassemble and reassemble. AIB cards are very 1337 g4m3r themed as usual. I think the MSI Ventus range is the nicest looking of the AIB cards, although I ordered an Asus 3080 TUF OC edition since it seems to be one of the best reasonably priced 3080s around.
To remove delicate ribbon cables without damage, safest method is to use some alcohol and non-stick tape (like the backing tape that comes with 2-sided tapes). Alternatively you can take some thin tape like Kapton (polyimide) tape, stick 2 pieces to themselves and use that as a shim. Might have to trim the edges. Alcohol will help lubricate and loosen the glue while the non-stick tape will shim the ribbon loose.
Picked up the Tuf gaming 3090 from MicroCenter this morning and if I didn't get it basically for free I would be disappointed. It seems like a 12-pin FE card will STILL be a true single-slot watercooling solution! The 12-pin connector has a height of 19mm and the spacing between PCIe slots is 20mm.

I am thoroughly impressed with the design of the cooler. I have never seen anything like it before and it actually works. They were able to pack the 3080 into a footprint so small it's only dual slot and nothing oversized about it except for the cooler. Massive cooler and a very small PCB. EVGA is the only partner that I've seen able to fit into that form factor. Of course Nvidia kept all the good dies for themselves as they usually do for FE cards. Cheeky bastards.

i swear i remember years ago, a case maker did a left side panel , with pin to pad panel fan support. to avoid that ugly left side panel fan wire connecting the panel to the motherboard. i have a vague memory of it, but im not sure if it actually saw it, or if i thought it up. i remember doing a function at microcenter in the early 2000's, & talking about a contact 'wire free' pin to pad left panel power option in some case brand that i no longer recall. back then we were doing a lot of case modding, & we used a friend who had a autobody paint shop in his garage. we did a kick ass Antec Lan boy with after market contact to pin fan power, it was sweet. but that wasnt a mass produced thing, just some guys testing ideas. that was back when zotac was still cool, & LAN was still an option in many games as a play mode.
Magnets only affect hard disk drives, cd/dvd/blu-ray drives and floppy drives. I ruined a DVD drive over ten years ago by putting a desk fan right in front of my computer. It was a hot summer and my dorm had no AC so I used the desk fan to cool my computer with the side panel open. After that, the DVD drive stopped reading reliably. Electric motors use electromagnetism to spin the rotor.
That’s where your wrong. Apple has begun designing completely new screw heads every few models. Just to screw with people trying to repair by themselves.
Redsurprise I don’t think they’ve introduced a new screw in awhile but if you get the appropriate driver and it’s pretty simple to open up and disassemble.

Love the shout out for the Lock Picking Lawyer! And I bet you are right with the red bull can!
16:47 lol holy shit, my dad works for Delta Electronics!
Hey my buddy my pal🤗....Can your dad hook me up with some fans😅
And do you maybe know someone who's dad works at AVC?🤔
I suppose the problem with GPUs is long term maintenance. You have shown us again how annoying it is to replace dried out thermal paste and the collateral replacement of thermal pads after a period of use to maintain thermals and performance.
Thanks for the long hours and hard work guys.
I'm a simple man: I see Gamer's nexus upload, I watch.
So just fyi, those aren't ribbon cables, those are FFC's (flat flexible cable). Ribbon cable is what connects IDE drives.
If you need to replace something searching "FFC cable (I know, it's redundant)" will get you way more love
This card looks like it would rip the slot right off the motherboard.
yep, it needs some nice structural support there, or you have to use a PCI-E cable and a big case for proper cooling
I really should be asleep...but theres no way I can resist a gamernexus video anymore
nvidia be like: nobody has duck tape at home, just take a stick with glue.
Thanks alot for all the information. Will replace the delta fan as it sounds done.
5:15 "Tweezers" that's an odd way of saying cable ties.
And he never even used an Allen wrench, what an amateur 😤😤😤
Instructions unclear. My swiss army knife doesn't have a T5 torx bit
Anxiety level just shot up to 100 seeing that poor calliper being used like that.
Guessing that Steve was equally anxious though :)
Dave: "Don't turn it on, take it apart!"
Whatever happens to you should always change you but never allow it to reduce yourself. I wish you all the best in all what you’re doing.
* "cloth" tape ,the stuff is stronger than Arnold Schwarzenegger!
Liked because of effort you put writing the whole name
I used some of that same tape to fix a hole in a puffer jacket years ago.
It's survived a lot and still not showing any signs of letting go.
Wonder why the thermal paste is so dry on a brand new card 😯 I thought it would get dry like that after long extensive use and not right outta the box!
yeah, really weird
Could it be they put it through testing beforehand?
Could it be they just used crappy paste?
@@wesw9586 and for an expensive card like that it should be really good stuff...

TIP: Magnetize your screwdriver and it will help when removing the 4 small screws for the fan. It will also help tremendously when re-installing them since you will need to vertically insert them.
@Violence Jack any number of things, but likely an aluminum alloy or titanium
I hate the assembly of the reference cards, it's like taking apart an smartphone. I don't have any problem in doing it but just imagine doing a quick repaste that you could do in 5 min with only a philips screwdriver. With this card it could take solid 20 mins for someone knowing what's going on.
At least AMD's Blowers can be taken apart with only a Philips Screwdriver. For all their other faults, hard disassembly isn't one of them.
@@Azraleee *isn't yet one of them ;)
@@Azraleee True, I was referring to Nvidia reference models.
I can't wait for watercooled cards to launch preferable the EVGA FTW3 Hybrid. Such a small PCB to work with, gotta love it
I wanna ask. Isn't the "dryness" of the TIM part of avoiding pumpout?
The paste for these things is dispensed in measured amounts with tooling, if the paste is that dry now it will probably dry out and crack quickly. Oem paste is very often pretty cheap.
Pretty sure the main consideration re: TIM viscosity is making sure it stays put during manufacturing, shipping, and sitting on store warehouse/store shelves.

Thank you for the hard work and information. Making it easy to make an informed decision for these card. Much appreciated.
I love the looks of the cooler, to me all the partner cards look like shitty in comparson.
Yeah the only decent looking AIB cards is the Asus Strix ROG and Asus Tuf.
The MSI Gaming X Trio looks pretty damn good too
The only partner designs I've really liked have mostly been from EVGA, since you'll mostly ever just see the side anyway.

Alcohol will help lubricate and loosen the glue while the non-stick tape will shim the ribbon loose.
would it be possible to put a 3090 cooler on a 3080?
Edit: Nevermind looks like the 3090 pcb is too wide
Jerry rig it baby
15:10 yes, that plastic screw grabber is a much better invention than the card you're pulling that screw out of
Picked up the Tuf gaming 3090 from MicroCenter this morning and if I didn't get it basically for free I would be disappointed. Got a 3080 on launch day from MicroCenter and wound up selling the same day for 2 grand. Since I made my money back plus enough extra to pay for a 3090 I said f it why not. Picked up another Got the Tuf gaming 3090 and the thing is a damn brick. barely fits in my case.
It looks gigantic. We're gonna need bigger cases

It seems like a 12-pin FE card will STILL be a true single-slot watercooling solution! The 12-pin connector has a height of 19mm and the spacing between PCIe slots is 20mm.
15:30 Never seen a tool like that yellow pen thing before. It would really come in handy for me, does anybody know what it's called or where to get one?
search amazon for IC pickup tool
Staples carries a computer toolkit that includes one.
Many Thanks guys. Found it and ordered it. Too bad it's only available on Ali Express because Amazon won't ship it to Egypt. It will prove Insanely useful when building and repairing PCs
Diligenc3 ... Right on! I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve had to use it to pick up screws I’ve dropped down in cases and onto motherboards... :)
Why are these videos so relaxing/comforting to watch? I have this playing in the background while I’m eating tator tots
This is why i listen to Steve, he's not afraid to be honest when needed. He speaks for all of us peasants
He is a man of the people. Understands the plight of the common man.
My god, the 3090 is massive. It's dwarfs the 3080 easily. We knew this before they came out but seeing him handle them both side by side.
Those FE PCBs is a SFF dream come true.😍

@@tylerdurden3722 I am awaiting the 3070 reviews, 3080 is a bit steep for me but the 3070 would fit nicely in my ITX system. My poor zotac GTX1070 mini is a trooper but since I made the jump to 1440p it's been running out of puff
i swear i remember years ago, a case maker did a left side panel , with pin to pad panel fan support. to avoid that ugly left side panel fan wire connecting the panel to the motherboard. i have a vague memory of it, but im not sure if it actually saw it, or if i thought it up. i remember doing a function at microcenter in the early 2000's, & talking about a contact 'wire free' pin to pad left panel power option in some case brand that i no longer recall. back then we were doing a lot of case modding, & we used a friend who had a autobody paint shop in his garage. we did a kick ass Antec Lan boy with after market contact to pin fan power, it was sweet. but that wasnt a mass produced thing, just some guys testing ideas. that was back when zotac was still cool, & LAN was still an option in many games as a play mode.
My question is there any negative effect of the magnet (from the frame) to the gpu itself? Or just minor?
No, no impact.
5:30 easiest solution is a strip of dark card or similar held over the LEDs with duck tape (which happens to be as wide as the 3090 is tall lol)
I feel like most Apple products are easier to disassemble than this.
Using the back of the caliper as a pry tool--- I like your style ;)
"Massiver" is not proper English. The correct term is "biggerest".
