So I see some thumbs down and comments on the video about the pike being alive when I started to clean it. As soon as I caught this pike I brought it over to the cleaning board. I hit it on the head with my ice scoop and thought it was dead, Then about 15 seconds in I noticed it was still breathing. Then I hit it again to make absolutely sure it was in fact dead this time as you see it's now covered in snow. I didn't notice it was breathing sorry. Normally I make sure they are absolutely dead before cleaning them or you would have seen me keep cleaning the fish right? I appreciate everyone views and support! To many people are to quick to judge before watching and thinking about the fact I did make sure it was dead before continuing. Any further negative comments will be deleted.
330 MaNiaC I’ve heard fish don’t have big enough brain to receptors to feel pain.. idk if that’s true or not so I try till kill them before I cut them up so I bleed them and let em die or hit em really hard on the head.. punching works lol but I’m sure the fish was knocked out and if not you’re good buddy, I’ve seen all sorts of people do it on purpose so at least you try and that’s good enough for me! Congrats on the pike! Keep on fishing!
It was probably just nerves mate but you did what Ci ld when you realised so good work and nice video 👍👍
Is it even legal to clean fish on the ice?
@@wyattsclassics7831 Yes and eat them
@@330Maniac thanks man
I have seen 100s of videos on how to fillet a pike and your method is the best
Burbot is poor mans lobster but great vid dude
Nah I think pike is? Well I think
Pike is referred to as poor man's lobster as well. They use a handful of different fish to make it.
@@330Maniac what’s the biggest pike you caught? Mine was 3 feet long
44.5 inches. Almost ft long. Caught it in ND. I have the video up on my channel
@@330Maniac what is the video called?
That looked really good. I'm excited to try that out. Thanks for sharing!
winter survival and shore lunch! oh ya! can't wait for this weekend now. thanks for making me slobber all over the place.
I’ve heard so much about this way of cooking northern. I will definitely have to cook my northern the next time I have a fish fry
Looks great! Thanks for the tip on how to fillet the y-bone out. I'll have to try.
Great video. My family eats Pike 12 months out of the year. It's our favorite fish to fish for and eat. We'll be trying this way of cooking it next time.
good video. i love informational videos on how, when, where ect.
Really like watching your videos. When I was young our Mom would make poor man's lobster and poor man's Salmon with small Pike. Both were very tasty.
It was excellent can't wait to do it again
You're making me hungry watching this video! Great job!
Does look good. That will be my next pike. Thanks for sharing
I would have to agree. This looks great. Now I'm looking forward to get a 27 incher
Thanks for all the great videos! Your the best. You have helped encourage me and my friend to create a UA-cam channel and it’s going great! Thanks again 330 MaNiaC.
Thanks for watching guys and good luck!
lol Sorry I'm watching and typing but dang it you made that look so much easier then anyone has ever explained it and I love pickled pike but I really want to try this now! Thanks for the GOOD "HOW TO"
I use the same recipe but add half of a sliced white or yellow onion! Great video!
Good vid! Pike is a very good eating fish. I use pickle northern recipe you had on a vid and pike patties recipe look forward to trying this
1 person doesn't like poor mans lobster..... and they're wrong for it
Great video Scott! I've always wanted to do a catch and cook like this!
Thanks! It's usually people that don't agree with me on something in a social media page lol
I’m gonna try that, cheers man thanks !
I made some pickeled pike with your recipe, and it turned out fantastic.even better than my grandmas recipe, and she was from minnisota also.
I love cooking on the ice. I'm pretty sure it adds 10 tastiness points.
You have all these lakes to yourself, I'm jealous. Fish looked awsome. I do the same with whitefish and lawyers
Looks great!!!!!!
Nice. We should probably do a *burbot* catch and cook late ice.
Yes we should!
The one thing that amazes me about you is that you are always out there doing you stuff and reaching into ice cold water without any gloves. If I did that, my fingers would turn black and fall off in 10 minutes, but you do it all day. Of course...I'm a Florida Boy from the panhandle. South Florida folks can't take under 60°, but it gets down to the mid 20°s several times a year, and I wont touch the water until late spring here.
Bare hands in ice water...my hat goes off to you.
Thanks!! I think ive just gotten used to it!
Very nice love it 😉🤘🎣🎣🎣
Solid vid. Keep on catching and eating
Awesome vid! nothing like fresh pike on the lake
I dig your style!
Great video. Way to show the versatility of cooking pike. I'll keep this in mind for this weekend. Everyone saying Burbot is the only poor mans lobster are crazy. Tip ups will be out this weekend! You the man!
Would smash. Nice work man! Enjoy the videos tremendously..
Pout and Pike are both great done in a very similar way. Chunked, boiled in Sprite and dipped in clarified butter. The original poor man's lobster
Ryan Highberg we cook lake trout with sprite also very tasty
Sweet!
Good job 330maniac I could Definately Mau on some of dat.
Next time you are gonna do it put your butter right in your boil and as you Scoup it out them chunks of lobster will be coated wit yer butta.
Good fishin and Tight lines
great video! will give this a try
Been trying to get out this last month but its been. -45+ the wind..probably wont worm up until the end of march where I live in northern Canada
Nice job my man
I often check my bobber depth with the vex and usually have to adjust it throughout the day. Stops to slip a bit
Dont let the haters get to you man!!! All us fisherman have our ways.... I also fish dl but mostly summer this was my first year ice and i still dont know much! You know your way around man dont let anyone tell u different!
Oops, you forgot to garnish it with Parsley like you use to get it when ordering at a restaurant or bar/grill. Lol, looks yummy though. Will have to make sum up soon.
Good video! Thanks
Our NY regulations are 5 fish at 18 inches or bigger. No slots. Would hate to try to remember all of that. Good video.
Thanks! They had no slot up until this year. Except 1 over 30 inches
Pike is also incredible scales & skin on (on the half shell), & faced down on a bbq grill with read wood for fuel. Baste with lemon juice, black pepper & butter mixture, then bbq sauce if you like & I do,also cocktail sauce or ketchup works & some love tarter sauce. Any fish cooks & eats well this way, especially huge carp filets. Just leave the skin & scales on the plate, cooked covered (roasted) this way,the meat lifts right off the skin & scales perfectly with your fork while you eat.
nice!
Hmm... kinda like your version of filet. I've been doing the five cuts. Gonna give yours a go next time I catch a decent one.
Thanks! I enjoy this method
Never tried that with snakes (Northern Pike). I’ve heard eelpout is good like this too. That’s different to have a pike slot. Shovel lid... True Minnesotan. :)
Sweet
I thought he caught lobsters thought, the ice! Any ways great video
...bleeding out a walleye makes a difference in taste, also especially if you cut out the dark lateral line on the fillet ...the small hammer-handles that are impossible to de-bone, are just great when they're pickled in jars, which softens up all the bones...
Poor man's lobster is eelpout
Pike and eel pout are both used. Traditionally it's Atlantic cod or halibut
Ok, so you DO eat em out there! Whew!
I was your 24,000th subscriber
Thanks for watching!!
Excellent video try boiling in 7 - up that is really good too
Thanks! I have boiled it in 7up and sprite before and they are all very tasty.
Do you put one can in the water or use a two liter bottle and use that in place of suger water?
You forgot the best part of the pike! The cheek scallops!
Nooo.... that's walleyes lol
@@330Maniac LOL oh that's one fish on the list !
Ova in The Lower Peninsula you start wit da big pot...oh yah da tall one. Ya add yer layer of potatoes. Den ya chop up some a dem onions too and then the carrots on top and ya cover all dat wit yer water and ya get all that ta boiling hard there for oh a good 10 to 15 minutes. Don't forget ta add some salt pepper and garlic. Now when dat timer goes off...well dats when we dump in dat der chinookski chunks and it's about time to get yer butter meltin cause it's almost time fer yer poor man's lobster right der yeppers.
On a side note what kind of filet knife do you have?
I was wondering the same thing!
Jared Polzine looks like it works good!
I have 2 of these knives now. They are very cheap but very sharp to be quite honest. They just say angler tools down the side
330 MaNiaC looks like a good knife to me Trapper!
Use a Rapala
What’s up pal it’s t wild from ny when u Gona come out are way
Hey T wild!!!!! Man I'd sure love to but won't be making it over this year =(
You should try boiling it in 7up yummy 😋
Never seen pike cooked that way. Gotta try it now!
Don't worry about the snowflakes man.... The vid was awesome recipe looked great. Good fishing to ya bud!👍
I just caught about 15 pike the other day and was thinking the whole time how I haven't tried them this way yet! I will defiantly have to give it a try!
I'm just betting that...seeing that jar...that you do pickle some pike too! Ehhh hoser?
Bill Walker 😂
You do great videos. You might want to make sure that catching an cooking them on the lake you are on is legal. Some lakes you can't do that. Good luck
Thanks! It is legal here. the fish counts towards my limit
Are you from Easter Ohio bud? Just came across your channel today. Just curious because of the 330
No I'm from central Minnesota. 330 is the largest size of beaver trap you can use
Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. Good vid
Poor man's lobster is a burbot
No it's not. Pike is also used right along with eelpout. Actually atlantic cod and halibut are what were traditionally used
Poor man's lobster (the fish) is one of many nicknames for the burbot. Poor man's lobster (the dish) is made with pike, halibut, cod, etc. Odd confusion, great food and fun fish all around!
Fishing tips and cooking tips together make for good UA-cam! Thanks.
I'm eating pike tonight!
Whats is an inexpensive 36 inch rod setup?
HT Makes some decent cheaper rods in that length.
I would not consider pike poor man's lobster. It is a fantastic tasting fish whether its baked, fried, or ground into patties. Probably more-so that walleye, but people just don't know how to remove the y-bones which is why they are so underrated as an eating fish.
They are definitely underrated. But as a guy that eats a ton of fish finding new ways to eat them like this is great. Having them like this they taste absolutely fantastic and id reccomend it to anyone
you mean catch and cook something that has way better flavour than wall eye: mmmmm pike
I always thought it was ling cod
Watch all your videos, but on this one I have to say you would be beaten with a stick if you boiled good pike around here, that's what we do with burbot. Pike is deboned and fried either in batter or just seasoned and fried. Most people think walleye is the best fried fish, but most of them never tried a fried pike fillet!
Pike is awesome to eat! I deep fry it as well but boiling is just as good!
@@330Maniac you got me there, i have never tried it boiled..one thing we do though is can the off pieces like salmon, that is good.
I tend to keep a lot of pike and eat. Trying a few new ways paid off really good. It's definitely an easy way to catch and cook on the lake with a group.
I have no idea why so many people hate pike but go batshit over bland old walleye.
@@10175978 because they don't know how to clean a pike properly and choke on bones.
I thought this was going to be a burbot video.
What kind of fillet knife ya got there?
Its a plain knock off i traded for a deer hide. Can't remember the brand
Looks like an older crkt one....have the same. Nice vid!
Can use lots of different kinds of fish
Hold up!
Are those orange things it’s roe?! Or fish eggs?! @7:55
What are the spices and measurements I couldn’t under stand the one sorry
1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup seasoning salt. 1/2 tbsp celery salt and 1/2 tbsp lemon pepper
What reels do you use
Okuma 20b bait feeder reels
@@330Maniac I wonder if the old Shimano bait runners are still around on the internet?
@@billwalker4836 I'm not sure
WTF are you talking about??? Northern Pike has NEVER been called "poor man's lobster". Don't get me wrong I love eating northern(most people don't because of how bony they are), but Pike isn't even close to the same flavor. Its has the same taste profile as yellow perch and walleye. BURBOT, on the other hand... also known in the north as "Ling" or "Ling Cod" are commonly called "poor man's lobster". They have a very sweet taste and fluffy texture. Great video brother, but coming from a Montanan this is not "poor man's lobster" that's boiled pike w/ butter. ..
It's been used in poor mans lobster for DECADES. Do you live under a rock or something to not know this? Simple use of google will show you.
I just did... And it doesnt say anything about northern pike. First results are Monkfish, Cod, then Burbot(eelpout).
Good luck w/ the channel.
- From under the rock...
@@coynerooski Well you must not have googled the right thing Lol. Traditionally from google even it's halibut and Atlantic cod. Substitutes are northern pike and eel pout. Thanks for watching! Glad you learned something from my vids!
Pike is not poor mans lobster in Michigan either, it's burbot. Total waste of a nice fish anyway.
@@4589scott So tell me exactly how it's a waste? I absolutely love it prepared this way and so did the other guy I was with. Isn't it about cooking fish the way you like it? Too many rude fishermen on UA-cam. Almost as bad as the Facebook groups. Good part is i get 1 negative comment to each 10 positive ones where people actually know what there talking about
Good video. As far as the comments... when subjects such as fishing, hunting, atv's, snowmobiles, cars, trucks, football, baseball, women, alcohol and spatulas are discussed, 50% of men lose 50% of their IQ. So in some instances, not much.
You can cook poor mans lobster out of any fish really, white flake works better & northern pike & pickerel work best. Can even use carp. I'm an ice off northern pike fisher. Any thing with gold on it works, spinners, spoons & flat fish & repelas ect, gold is your best open water northern pike color for lures. Talking my game now!
swap the water out with 7-up next time
Ive used 7up but prefer water instead
Do it with pout
Poor man's lobster is Burbot, not pike!
It's pike also!!!!! Halibut and Atlantic cod are traditionally used!!!! Not pike or burbot!!!!!!!!! Look it up!!!
Pike is expensive at the grocery store..
That is the easiest way of deboning a pike.
Very informative, very cool, sub your way, have a great season from Forrest Outdoors. Check us out when you have time.
Make a fish soup next time
Kinda sad you actually think poor man's lobster is pike... It's burbot lol good video tho.
Thanks man! Actually it's sad you don't Lol. Halibut and Atlantic cod are what are traditionally used. Pike and Burbot which is also a member of the cod family are the real substitutes. Look it up sometime. Ive had a lot of comments like this and when i tell them i usually get "of yeah I just checked and you're right" lol
My bad man.. good videos
So it’s poor man’s lobster with basically salt and garlic for seasoning? No sugar to sweeten it taste like lobster and no butter to once again mimic lobster? This may be good, but it’s boiled pike.
หนาว
What if poor men eat lobster too?
You didnt kill the fish nor bleed it out. Fish was still moving when you cut its fins and started cutting. 6:34
I never ever bleed fish out. I like mine alive as long as possible to keep its fresh taste. I thought it was dead when i started cleaning it but it wasn't so I made sure it was. I can't please all my viewers sorry but either you watch or don't. I'm not gonna walk on eggshells around everyone.
Haa. You were the only one that liked your own COMMENT. Like if your (thumbs up/liked) comment actually means anything.
@@clozeeyt7414 Sorry Boban but I don't like my own comments. I stand by my decisions. Don't like it find your way off my channel
@@330Maniac Boban whos that?... How old are you? Meet me somewhere where i can show you how to actually fish and kill it properly. You need Grammer work as well.
@@clozeeyt7414 What's gammar??? 🤣🤣🤣
No humane dispatch, number one rule unless it’s a matter of survival...shame because otherwise an okvideo
No shame here. I thought it was dead but after it moved I made sure. Thanks for watching
Hey Rick, Go pound some sand
watch it because some states do not allow you to clean and cook on the ice...120.00 fine... Gary
This state it's perfectly legal. It just counts towards your daily limit
I here ya... wi is a no, no as I understand it... looks like a good lake...what town are you by? we have a cabin in Akeley...Gary
pike tastes nothing like shellfish
Of course it does. You just gotta learn how to cook it properly to get the desired flavor
you are doing your filleting wrong my native friends boneless fillet full fillet not pieces
I'm doing it right. There's no wrong way to do this. When you do the single fillet method there are still bones left by the tail. They are small bones but I don't want any at all in my fillets
you are incorrect the fish can be filleted with no bones in the tail you need to watch some other peoples video on that process
@@guycotterhill1822 ive watched countless ones. I am correct. There's bones in the tail that can't be removed with that method
Poor mans lobster is bluegill not pike...lol
Actually you couldn't be more wrong Lol. Traditionally its halibut or Atlantic cod. Substitutes are eelpout or northern pike. Google it.
I heard it apply to monkfish
@@330Maniac I've always heard Burbot called poor mans lobster. Maybe a Canadian thing.
I've heard about 7 different replies now on various media posts claiming poor mans lobster is made from about any fish there is.
Pike and lobster are nothing alike. Nothing.
Ah then you've never tried these recipes. You'd be surprised because I love lobster and love pike this way
Poor mans lobster is burbot not pike
Google it. Its lingcod, pike or burbot. It's been used for decades
Pike is not the same as lingcod and burbot. Lingcod and burbot are the same fish pike is not
It’s easily distinguishable
@@dylansundberg6629 No it's not but like I said it's also used to make pours mans lobster. Simply googling it will show you
330 MaNiaC you smell like eggs
Hate to state the obvious but step number 1 after you catch the fish and before you clean it is to kill it.
If someone tries to say that the latest research shows fish don't feel pain. Any opportunity we give to the general public to view hunting and fishing as cruel and unethical they will run with.
Great info!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Honestly i keep them alive as long as possible and kill them right before I clean them. I prefer them fresh and not laying dead for hours if possible.
Me too in the warmer weather. But I have noticed that the fish that get bled and instantly on ice have a firmer texture and better taste.
My comment was just that it looked like you were cleaning a live fish before you killed it. If it was dead - mybad
