As a Data Scientist, this video is highly accurate and well-detailed. Most people have no understanding just how much corporations and the government know about you.
I see a lot of short sighted "I have nothing to hide" arguments, implying that if you are trying to avoid surveillance as much as possible, you must have 'something' to hide. One thing that is also not well considered is how secure is the information gathered ? Is it exclusive to intel agencies, or could it be accessed by criminals and/or criminal organisations with nefarious intent ?
This is the same case in London and UK. It is wild how citizens of Western countries believe the notion about China engaging in such mass surveillance but ignoring their own government doing the same.
When the Patriot Act went into force I worked at company that sold leads to insurance agents. May not seem like much but the info at our disposal was astronomical. When woman became pregnant we'd sell parents Life Insurance. The data that this country has on us is unfathomable
Don't worry! There's no way the government would ever purposely harm it's own citizens for disagreeing with it, right? Anyways, time to go do my mandatory reading of how America is super free and good and liberty.
Do not bring your phones to protests, do not bring anything that can have tracking software in it, including smart vehicles with their own operating system and wear masks
I assume airplane mode is fine, as long as you're an Android, preferably on debug mode, because you can directly tell what the radios are doing. IIRC iOS used to only temporarily disable radios. Bluetooth can also be used to do rudimentary location tracking. I know this because when I was in college a year ago I would use an app to contribute to open cell and wifi coverage maps because well I myself wanted a good coverage map. EDIT: never used the bluetooth scanning functions, as I was only worried about mapping wifi on my uni's campus, and cell tower coverage.
@alext3811 airplane mode should disable the surveillance from Google's apps, but still not safe, the airplane mode doesn't affect all functions on the kernel level of the operating system, and since Google turned most of the android's Linux into proprietary software we would need to do a jailbreaking into the cellphone first before entering a debug mode because you would need root privileges to use it, unless you bought a open framework cellphone with Android or Linux phone, or bought a phone brand that allows you to do it, which are pretty rare these days, idk about iphones tho
@@alext3811Buying a Faraday bag is also an option. However, it's better to just leave your phone at home completely. Get a burner with 2 emergency contacts for the day of.
My parents are retiring to Mexico in less than 5 years. They were born over there and had high hopes when they came to live here and make a living but they have slowly realized that this country isn’t what it is with all the craziness going on at the federal and state levels
I mean, America has its own atmosphere, beautiful nature and also some really nice people, you can live well there, if you have a decent amount of money and there is a huge consumer industry, but there are so many negative points, everything I have listed has its downsides and the longer you are there, the more you become aware of that. I am happy to be in Europe in a socially liberal state with healthcare-system, even if we also have problems, it is not as bad as in America and above all the value system is different.
@@ReapingTheHarvestEurope is big, not every country is the same, as are the various US states. I have lived in the USA and two European countries for many years. Have you even lived in Europe to have an fair and educated opinion? Or is it just the American patriotic spirit, that was indoctrinated into you from childhood without being open to new things, while the media gives you the opinion. The difference between independent, objective media is also important. As I said, America has its advantages and disadvantages, it can be a great, interesting and beautiful country, where you can live well with a decent amount of money, but I would prefer Europe over the last few years, apart from traveling. If my parents or siblings got sick, I would always prefer Europe, also in terms of quality of life and security. Also check satisfaction-studies and income ratios in the cross-section of society, including labor-rights, including purchasing power and justice. I understand everyone, who loves America, it has its own vibe and advantages, I'm still an enthusiast, but not to live there permanently, the negative aspects weigh too much for that. You should also allow other opinions.

@@Support_Ad_Blocker Dude I feel your pain. Before it was updated in like 2022, for YEARS my childhood home on google earth had a picture of my brother, my dog and I on our front porch. I was probably only around 9 years old at the time and my brother was 12. We were children who did NOT consent to be photographed or have our faces on the internet for anyone to easily come across, and were only outside because we were curious what the weird car driving through our neighborhood was. Ironically we googled it later to find out lol but yeah none of this is okay. I never felt comfortable knowing people could just zoom in on a map to a random place and see where I live and me as a child. It feels like a target on my back.
I was disgusted when I opened the iNaturalist app a while back and got a pop-up saying that if I wanted to continue using the app I would have to agree to the US government tracking and storing my data. I'm not even American.
Well now I understand what Google is fucking useless nowadays. Literally cannot find just things that are old or niche that I'm trying to look up, because it's just mountains of ads for what they think I mean, instead of the actual niche thing that I'm looking for even when I put it in quotes.
I never had problems with using quotes in a search engine until this summer, it blew my mind. Technology isn't getting better, it's just flashier so people think it's better.
I had to create a new account so I could look up info for my uni project since it would show me random crap vaguely related to my past searches instead of what I was looking for. For projects now I just go to the library.
Google has been totally useless for years. But now, it's not only Google. Bing, Yahoo, Duck Duck Go (believe it or not) and others are the exact same way. It's very difficult to find a search engine that not only gives you what you're looking for but also doesn't collect your data (at least as much as Google does). Also, quotation marks seem to mean nothing now, though search engines still recommend them to find what you want.
The US government has masterfully convinced its citizens to trade their freedom for security, and all the heinous acts they've committed in the name of national security is somehow justified.
stop calling it freedom. You are still "free". Your freedom doesn't extend to you doing illegal acts. I am tired of the criminals trying to go against this
@@jonathandpg6115 what illegal acts were protestors against genocide (which the USA is bankrolling) doing when the US rolled out police to brutalize and beat them up? And even for some “illegal” acts… I mean, Julian Assange’s actions were “illegal” but he exposed the American regime for what it truly is. And he’s been hunted by the American government for it.
I'm under the impression the National Security is just a cover for corporations without consent milking the population for big data for profit. Big data has a huge potential for the betterment of society and research, but I guess that would be Socialism.

As someone who went to school for cybersecurity, thank you for making this video. The thing nobody talks about in security is the fact every tech entity is collecting way too much data on us all, all data that can be hacked/sold to/shared with to god knows who. Even worse now that so many devices are smart and services cloud connected. Data that was never collected or doesnt exist on a server somewhere doesnt need to be secured and is what every person who cares about cybersecurity should strive for.
A threat angle few things about is that of "social engineering" ... the ability to impersonate a person, via having access to private information of an individual. Already big scams pulled off via phone/e-mail.

Thanks for your work. I am finally a proud member and also support you on Patreon. I wish I could support you and your research with more money but I'm currently unemployed due to mental issues that the State doesn't consider serious enough (so they're just gonna wait until I get better to go back to work or until I die).

Why would this be taken down? It’s common knowledge.
@@piperjaycie It might remind more people of this screwed up country, perhaps reminding them for the rest of their lives.
This was uniquely informative. Thank you.
This is such an important corner of the discussions we need to have to survive the next few years, and I'll be further acting on this with seriousness. Step one, attempt to find the most secure way to be able to research, best search engine, most ethical VPN etc. I've already had almost 5 years of experience slowly restructuring my life about serious advances for fairtrade, anticapitalist action that can be realistically sustained without draining all my energy.
I'm not in the US, but my country is in proximity, and the US didn't deserve this either. Even if we've had a pretty big database of our data already taken by the companies, it's never too late to cut them off.

I'm just gonna mention Shotspotter here. It is audio surveillance deployed in US cities to "supposedly" record gunshots, but like Alexa it's always listening, also Naomi Brockwell is a great starting pint for anyone wanting to bolster their online privacy
The powers that be seem to be far more interested in preventing the flow of ideas, particularly in regards to critical thinking, than preventing the loss of life.

I got a new card in July and haven't paid my membership since July. I lived in and walked right in. Apparently, they were busy and didn't stop me.
15 minutes later, they walked up to me to talk to me about my membership. I asked how they found me, and she said that the cameras knew where I was.
So it's happening everywhere.

I gotta say Google sucks at using the info it thinks if collects on me, especially if an occasional search for something in spanish or japanese changes all their ads to those languages even on Spotify. Also love the feminine hygiene ads as someone who doesnt have that setup down there, and the gaming/ED pill ads because it cant decide how old I am or what I like.
Keep pushing Amazon ads, I'll never sign up so its a waste of their money.
Yeah, ad personalization is completely ineffective. A thinly veiled junk "product" meant to legitimize consumer surveillance.
Now imagine what it accidentally might have done to your credit rating /s

I'm currently more worried about the razors edge of nuclear apocalypse we're walking on. And I wish more people was worried, but no. At tops we have some bitching about the environment and CO2, nothing about not having a climate at all.

Yes, very sobering thoughts!
We live in surveillance capitalism, and its getting worse, and people most worried about getting surveilled, dont realize their internet activity is doing exactly that
Well, when you get to the bottom of it, the alternative is to waste your time chit chatting on-line or sitting 24/7/365 freezing in a cave. If you venture outside, there are electronic eyes in the sky :)
I live in the second most surveiled city in the UK, I'm not doing anything criminal, but I suddenly feel the need to become more anonymous
I'm doing anything criminal and same.

Without privacy:
- The asymetry/insecurity is created between the one who is watching and the other one which is being watched.
- You are not making any actions freely because you know you are being watched.
- You can't make up your mind (i.e. your home) when you know that you are being watched.
We've become observed particles 😳

the scary part is one day they might come after everyone that watches anything online. Call it a post -tax or face prison time. You think HBO/Apple wouldn't train their AI to buy up data showing who watched what and then building a personalized claim using their AI lawyers to sue people?

"Without privacy freedom is absolutely impossible." - Herbis R. Green. "As long as you give them your mind, your time, and your money, they have no reason or incentive to stop monitoring/recording your entire life, no reason to stop manipulating you, and no reason to stop exploiting you.
What’s becoming so obvious to people now is that colonialism has never ended just rebranded with different terms. From Natives indigenous people being called “savages” in the old days to now being called “terrorist” by neocolonialists who are neoliberals, neoconservatives, and zionist.
1) Savages is now “terrorist”
2) Civilizing them is now “bringing them democracy”
3) Colonies is now “territories”
We can all see Israel is a colonial project being supported by former and current colonials such as U.S, UK, and others who also control territories of indigenous natives in Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, and many more.
The liberation of Palestine will definitely give RISE to many indigenous natives around the world to free themselves from western domination. This is the underlying ripple effect that the U.S government and its puppet allies don’t want to happen
As someone who watched a ton of videos man made here in the U.S criticizing china for doing this exact same thing. I’m starting to wonder if the US was just pointing fingers as they were trying to replicate the same thing.

I'm glad that many commenters have discussed protest safety, but I do want to bring up an additional point: as socialists, we're gonna need to get comfortable getting arrested for protest. This is something that I am still very much working on and afraid of, but we have to recognize that as the state increases its capacities to target us, some of us will be captured, and we have to fight just as hard to free those who are captured in this manner
Exactly. Millions of USSR soldiers didn't die for nothing after all, or the thousands in the Haymarket.

The NSA is the one collecting all the information. They route it to the agency who wants the info, which is basically any of them. Secret service, FBI, CIA, etc.

One of my acquaintances had a Ring camera. He installed it after being robbed a few weeks prior to me visiting. I told him the privacy implications, & the fact the police could access the camera without his consent & that he was violating the privacy of all his guests. He heard me out with skepticism and I told him I wouldn't be visiting or hanging out with guests as long as he had the camera. He kept the Ring and we parted ways. Fifteen years of friendship eliminated b/c he doesn't understand people's basic right to privacy or how he could be incriminating himself with warrantless footage.
