- Hye, motorheads! In this video, we show you how we changed the Front Differential fluid on this 2012 Ram 1500. This is a full, detailed how-to guide for a front differential fluid service!
---
What is a differential on a car?
"The differential (or transaxle in the case of many front-wheel-drive vehicles) is a key part of your car that sends power from the engine and transmission to the individual wheels. Rather than both wheels turning at exactly the same rate, a differential allows for more precise control of the vehicle."

I can hardly believe how simple this front and rear diff replacement was! I''m embarrassed to tell you what I just paid to have my truck done. Never again!! Thank you Sir.

Does the mopar fluid need to state that it’s G5 or as long as it’s 75w-85 it’s all good? They change the labels so much I just want to make sure before doing mine? Great video and thanks
I don't really know much about fluid dynamics. I just ran the Mopar fluid, however, you can go and look at the website for that fluid and it will have all of its compatibilities listed!
I noticed that on the front dif, you didn't use the sealant like you did in the rear dif. I'd like to know if it isn't necessary for the front?
My owners manual says to use 75w90 or GL5 9763....dealer says 75w85??? What am I missing?
Do you need to add friction modifier or does mopar add it to the gear oil?
Additive u mean are for rear
Do you use RTV on the front like you do on the rear? Another great video
Front plugs have rubber o rings
@@joshd2689 Thanks!
You're welcome!
Really should have filled the front diff on a level surface. Being up on the ramps you certainly over filled it.
I run mine up on 4 ramps then I'm covered.
I just changed mine using this video. Thanks, it really helped with the first time doing the front diff on my 2015 Ram. I got about a quart and 1/2 in maybe just a hair more or less. It ran out just like yours did, I didn't have a pump I just stuck the hose directly in and used a funnel. do you think that was enough oil?
What gear oil did you use ?
جمليل😍👍🏻
Thank you!
جمليل؟ او جميل ! هههههههه
Why RTV on the rear plugs but not the front?
Is this the same for the 2007 ram 1500?
Do you know if the 2019 ram 1500 would be the same process?
I have a 2014 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 8sp transmission it's pretty much the same you can do this yourself. Check with your local Ram dealer to make sure you get the right differential lube and follow the instructions in the video you'll be fine.
2010 ram 1500 front differential does not have a drain plug. You either have to remove the diff cover or use a siphon pump. I believe they didn't use a drain plug until 2012. The rest of the video is still helpful though, mostly just commenting for other viewers who may have 2010 or 2011 trucks.
This video is timely, I did my rear already now to do the front......you dont need the anti slip additive in the front?
I ran the OEM stuff they gave me straight out of the bottle! Dont think the front does but I will double check!
As long as your front isn’t a limited slip ( and I don’t believe any OEM’s are ) you won’t need a additive friend
I'm not sure which truck you're driving but if you go to your service department give them your VIN number they'll be able to help you with any of the new synthetic axle lubricants you may need. Which eliminates the guesswork. My 2014 uses 2 quarts of SAE 75W-140 in the rear and 1 quart of 75W-85 in front. Be safe and check.
I got no skid plates on my 2017 Ram. Whassup wit that?
Thank for the info :
Do we use the same size allen as in the rear diff ?
Hey We have a video on servicing the transfer case and the rear diff! And the Transmission!
I just did the service on my 2014 and yes the Allen key is a 14 . I have more confidence in you then
you do. You can do this.
@@DMACHOLMAN 👍🏽.
@@dimensionexo.
I'll be checking that video out I also need to do the transfer case service I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks
@@DMACHOLMAN Kool and thank you.
The dad joke got me as I am a father
Haha! I am just an uncle! But i fear for the day I have a child! Happy Motoring, glad that made you laugh!
My 2010 ram 1500 front diff looks different than this I’m not sure if I have any drain plugs
Then you need to remove the cover and drain it, I did it to my rear differential

Add some Lucas in conventional oil I won’t use that synthetic lube it rust right through metal at least put a blend of some conventional oil in there like Lucas, my rear end plate rusted through and took out my rear pinion bearing
My 2009 Ram diff cover has no fill or drain plugs! Now what??
where can I but the tools in canada
I would check a local auto parts store! They typically have auto tools you can rent too!
Mines leaking and cv axle are moving
Could you always warm up the fluid first by driving around first?
It doesnt get real hot compared to motor oil.
The practice of running and warming oil isn't practically beneficial unless the ambient temps are truly frigid
Should I use different lube on the front in comparison to the back? (2012 Ram 1500)
Refer to your owners manual. I know the 2013 states to use 75w90 in the front and 75w140 in the rear. Make sure to pick up the limited differential additive from the dealership if you have the limited slip diff in the rear.
Nailed it Kael Thanks! Refer to your service manual and get your fluids from the dealer if you are concerned! Thats what we did
Do Ur research bud I'm doing my 2009 1500 and I have a diff cover to remove if I recall 2009 to 2011 is different from 2012 to 18 in many ways plus wife's is a 2012 so I am 100 percent sure that 09 and 12 are in fact different
Still very informative for the correct years
Thanks Chris, what engine and transmission do you have? This truck is a early model 2012 Hemi with the 6 speed auto trans and 4wd.
So two quarts of 75w-85?
Yea just 2 quarts? The rear of mine took almost 3.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm thinking my 13 is the same as yours.
Thank you a lot. What if your vehicle is at angle how do you know when you've put enough in? Or can you even over do it?
If you over do it it will just push out of the seals, but if you are concerned go find a gas station after you filled it to the max that you can and check it there. Always a free flat surface there!
@@Revitauto thank you.
How often or not to change front and rear diff fluids?
I follow the factory maintenance or sooner depending on how hard the truck is used!
You can find the fluid change intervals for the front and rear differential in your owners manual. And if you're unsure about a step pressure back to this video.
I hope this was helpful.
Dealership says 75 140 gear oil for front and back differential
Interesting, I have two different fluids from the dealership, and then I had to go back and add friction modifier.
Was that a torx or Allen? Looks more Allen
This was an allen key for this!
@@Revitauto you said torx in the video. Was confused
You know! I think you are correct that it was a Torx!
A Torx bit can be used in place of a hex key.
Good how to video. But dude .. wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
I do sometimes, promise. Wearing computer reading safety glasses right now!
Did you just pick a random parking lot to do this?
Not Random! We are a fleet service company and we service vehicles on job sites so that companies don’t have to pay their employees to go to a service center! So we help the companies make more revenue and give time back to the employees .
My front plate on my diff has no fill or drain holes how the fuck do I fill it
My 09 has no drain plug either but the fill plug is on rear right side of the differential cover
ITS A HEX BIT NOT TORX
