Leonard Nimoy who plays Spock, did not enjoy his experience filming the first Star Trek movie, so he actually requested to get killed off in the 2nd movie. But then he enjoyed filming the 2nd movie and began regretting his decision. So they hastily added that little mind meld with Bones at the last minute and wrote the third movie to bring him back - it wasn't planned that way, it's just what ended up happening. Also, Leonard Nimoy actually directed this movie as he does the next one.

Leonard Nimoy is easily my favorite Star Trek film director, no contest.
I could just imagine how he felt not only re-uniting with Mark Leonard, but the two of them getting a chance to delve into and expand Vulcan culture and mythology even more. Oh, if only I could have been a fly on the wall in those creative meetings

my gods, you are watching this. This was my fav star trek of them all as I lived with 2 years of pain when I saw Spock die when i was a kid. I so wanted to go rogue and join this crew. As a nibble of backstory, they never rehearsed when Kirk learns of Davids death, there was just pure shock from the crew when it was announced and Kirk nearly falls over in his chair, and Bones tries to console Kirk but Kirk had a plan to sacrifice the Enterprise in a nearly Viking Valhalla way, in style (reminds me of Battlestar Galactica). As a kid I remember the whole theatre jumping up cheering when Kirk talks Klingon and beams to safety and it was all cheers, claps and head shakes when the movie closes.

Fortunately these hard feelings wouldn't last long, as he would be a co-writer on the next one :P

To each his own, but I was in love with the look of the Enterprise from Day 1. And it was truly a revolutionary design at the time, since pretty much all spaceships in science fiction before it looked like flying saucers or rocket ships. Matt Jefferies, who designed the ship as well as much of the look of TOS, combined the two into a truly unique look. I don't like to use the word "iconic" very often, as I think it's one of the most overused terms on UA-cam, but NCC-1701 is all that and more to me.

"But at what cost? Your ship... your son..."
"If I hadn't done it, the price would have been my soul."
As a child, STIII was actually my favourite. Even now, I like it about as much as II. Something that gets me is that, despite being a direct sequel (set at most only a few weeks after Khans' defeat), and featuring the same cast and crew, it feels very different. It has a much more somber, muted tone to it compared to its more brash, adventurous predecessor. Some critics called it 'operatic' and I get why.
Anyway, as usual, some more info:
    - Spock-Actor Leonard Nimoy directed this movie (and the next). Infact, this was his debut as a director
    - Saavik was recast. As far as I know Kirstey Alley had disagreements with the producers about her salary. Personally, I prefer Robin Curtis in the role.
    - Kruge is often unfavourably compared to Khan but I think he is in his own way an equally good villain. No theatrics, no nonsense, gets shit done and stays focused. Except when he freaks out. And given he's portrayed by Lloyd, when he loses it he LOSES it.
    - Sarek appeared in one episode of the Original Series. He had a strained relationship with his son but they mended it eventually
    - The age of the _Enterprise_ was actually closer to 40 Years. It was already in service for a while when Kirk took command before the events of TOS. His predecessor in the Captains Chair was Christopher Pike.
    - Ah, the Klingon Bird of Prey, one of the coolest spaceships of the entire Franchise and one that would stick with Trek for another 15 Years. In comparsion to the large Battlecruisers seen at the start of TMP, which were capital ships designed to go toe-to-toe with the best the Federation has to offer, a Bird of Prey is more like a raider meant for hit and run attacks. In a fair fight, a ship like the _Enterprise_ would tear a BoP to shreds.
    - All the new Spaceships seen in this movie were designed by Nilo Rodis who also worked on "Return of the Jedi" and designed every new craft seen there. Infact, as far as effects are concerned there was a lot of overlap in terms of crew (as both Series' effects were done by ILM)
    - The scenes on Genesis were filmed on a soundstage and them looking a bit fake acually works selling the point that this is basically an Artificial Planet.
    - Lastly, my favourite Scene of this movie is Sareks mindmeld with Kirk. Some people consider William Shatner a bad actor and these people can bugger off. I know he tends to overact, but when he's rather subdued as in this movie, he's great. "The Search for Spock" is probably his best performance in the role. That soft, pained 'No..' as the meld tore that fresh wound of Spock's death wide open again was just perfect.
Looking forward to the next reaction. Live long and Prosper.

Funny trivia: according to Star Trek timeline, the Enterprise, at the time of these events, is not twenty, but FORTY years old, being launched in 2245 and this and the previous movie are set on 2285/2286 (the first movie is probably set in 2271/2273). Twenty years is the age of the Enterprise in the REAL timeframe: the Star Trek original series is mid-Sixties and this movie is mid-Eighties. However, they did leave the door open for Spock to come back if Nimoy decided to play the role again which he did. And even getting him to come back was not easy, as he only agreed to do it if they let him direct Part III.

The Klingon Bird-of-Prey is probably one of my favorite ship designs as well. I believe this is its first appearance, and has since become the most common design for the Klingons. Ironic since it was initially designed for a different race, the Romulans (basically evil Vulcans). They were originally supposed to be the villains of this movie, but the studio decided Klingons were more marketable to general audiences.

    • @Trygvar13

The Bird-of-Prey was not supposed to be a Klingon ship at all. It was later changed to be a Klingon ship but the wing pattern was not changed and is obviously Romulan.

Having seen your Star Trek II, Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit reactions, I realised that Star Trek III would come soon. When you said that you liked Christopher Lloyd in the last two, I commented that you should look out for him in ST III. Yes, he played the Klingon, Kruge. 😂
The director of ST II, Nicholas Meyer himself, didn't know that they'd decided to bring Spock back. The scene with Bones was added at the last minute without his involvement, and he was surprised to see it in the finished film. Then, of course, Leonard Nimoy said that if he was going to be back, he wanted to direct, and the producers said okay.
Anyway, even though it wasn't planned that way from the beginning, II, III and IV do very much form a trilogy. IV is definitely worth a watch.

Then, in Star Trek 6 they changed actress again to Kim Kattrall as they wanted the character back, but they wrote her as the character 'Valeris'.
They wanted Kim Kattrall for Star Trek 2, 3 and 4, but she was unavailable so that was why they went with Kirstie Alley, and then Robin Kurtis.

I’m really excited to find your channel. As a lifelong Trekkie, I can’t wait to see you watch the next one.
They didn’t kill Spock off in order to make a sequel. They thought that Star Trek 2 would be the last movie and Leonard Nimoy wanted the character to go out in a blaze of glory. But they all began to have so much fun making 2 and the studio realized it was such a good film that they immediately green-lit a sequel.
And the producer of Treks 2-5 said that he would bring Spock back but it had to be at a huge price. Basically, we got back Spock, but we lost the Enterprise and Kirk lost his son. And they all lost their careers. There was a huge price to pay to get him back so the original death didn’t look like a gimmick.

Nimoy didn't want to come back for the first film, so they started to recast with a character named Xon - who's actually in the first part of ST: The Motion Picture - but the director, Robert Wise, had a daughter who LOVED Star Trek, and she told him point blank, "Dad, you can't make Star Trek without Spock." And she was right. Spock was the heart of this thing. Every series that followed the original has a "Spock-like" character (some have more than one), and when they tried to avoid it - like with Voyager - they had to invent a Spock-like character to save the show. Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine character saved the last few seasons of Voyager, imo (AND she was smokin hot). But Nimoy was a God, lol.
