  • "How could you fall for that?" "But you chose to give them your money." These are statements that people who have been scammed hear much too often. They are damaging. They are victim-blaming. And we all need to be careful to not add more harm when a person has been a victim of a crime. If you are a supporter, I hope this helps you choose a different approach with someone you care about and want to help. If you are the person who was scammed, I hope this helps you to notice these kind of words when they happen, so you can more easily dismiss them because you know how manipulative the scammer was.
For supporters, I have courses that give you a lot of information on how to help the person who was scammed. One of them is for family and friends; another for advocates, bank personnel, law enforcement or other professional supportive roles; and a third one is for mental health providers.
The thing I am most proud of in these courses is the section on the wide variety of psychological tricks that scammers use. Partly because it helps you really see how a person's free will is taken from them. And partly because it helps the listener to protect themselves in the future!
    Here's a link to those courses: lifepaths-scho...

Thank you for this. It's not just friends and family but law enforcement need to be educated on this as well. When my friend's mother was scammed, she was told the same thing by both the local police, then the DA's office she contacted when the police would not even take a crime report from her.

I completely agree, and yes frequently a crime report is not taken when a person is scammed. She can report at ic3.gov, though. Every report people make there helps to gain information about the magnitude of this problem, and the FBI uses the information to match up cases in their investigations. Thanks for commenting!
