I love the picture your are painting - reminds me of the countryside where I grew up. I also enjoy your personality - is soft and soothing - some other folk's voices are harsh and annoying. Keep up the great work!
Hi Thanks for commenting, I do use a liquid white medium before I begin remember to start while it is still wet. remember this rule a thin paint will stick to thick paint, make sure your highlights are thinner than the paint underneath. And do not over work an area use light to medium tapping pressure creating foliage. I hope this helps.
Oh my... you are very talented...and absolutely adorable... i love the way you love what you are doing... great SoH too!... good on you for sharing your talents and knowledge so freely... we all have our own way of making the world a better place...thanks for showing us your way :) kindest regards
Thank you for the kind comment, I usually always put a medium on first like liquid white, or magic white then start painting before it dries. these are different than gesso's these are oil based, gesso is water based. regards, Michael
@MSbratz007 My Basic tools are 2 Inch brush, 1 inch brush, #3 and #6 fan brush, #2 script liner, #10 palette knife, and #8 filbert. colors are Lukas Studio Oil Colors. Regards, Michael
your videos are so helpful i was having such a hard time trying to oil paint.you really helped me.im in a wheelchair now and needed something to do.im watching all your videos and im getting your brushes off your web sight to.once again thank you so mkuch and hope we can be friends...morey
i just bought all your brushes.i hope i can paint like you some day..god bless you and your family..and thak you so much.im getting ready to try one of your painting right now..morey swanger
@Conker303 ok when you thin paint it makes it flow better, with this type of technique wet on wet you start with a firm oil paint then paint wet layers of paint on top of each other. as you do this the paint needs to be thinned so it will stick on top of the firm paint without make a muddy mess, also thinning can make opaque colors become transparent. and thinning paint lets you do a lot of detail work with the liner brush. I am sure there are more that I have not listed here this is just some
@rainuke1998 if you are using oil paints when I used a acrylic palette I would where gloves then use a paper towel dipped into paint thinner "turpenoid" etc.. to cut the paint lose then wash with warm soap and water. But most of the time now I use plastic coated butcher paper from Walmart. waxpaper works also, these can be disposed of when you get finished painting. easy cleanup..:-} Regards, Michael
alot of people use a smooth surface canvas for portraits. you can buy them smooth or add more coats of jesso to make it smooth. sand in between coats. regards, Michael
I did this painting in about a hour depends on the paint you use for the drying time. I use Lukas Studio Oils It takes about two days to dry. regards,Michael
@darc26100 linseed oil is a oil medium, Gamsol is a brand of thinner made by Gamblin, you can use both to thin oil paint. I currently use Turpenoid. you use them when you need to thin your paint to do say ..detail work and applying highlights to objects in your painting when you paint in wet layers. Fat' oil paint is paint straight from the tube. Mixing oil paint with an oil makes it even 'fatter'. 'Lean' oil paint is paint mixed with more turpentine than oil. continued below next reply...
@MsAsumness sure you can use a brush but there is a big difference in the effect you are going to get by using the knife, lots of texture but if you really would like to use the brush or something load allot of paint if you want that texture. if not load less paint and blend till it looks softly practice on a scrap piece of canvas or something. hope this helps, Michael
@PrinceOF9Imagination here is a quick tutorial I use natural hair brushes, pre-stretched canvas, Oil paints, when I say the name of the paint I am using I am just telling someone painting along with me what colour I am using at that moment. I use turpenoid thinner to clean my painting tools. this is very basic description, visit tvpainterDOTcom for pictures of my brushes etc... regards, Michael
Just a couple of questions.. What tools do you use eg.. what is that kniife thing you are using? and what size brushes did you use throughout this painting?
Questions! I'm so new to this and you make it look so easy- do you use a "liquid white" before you begin? And I can get to the stems on the trees- after that it always looks like mud and a mess and just... yuck! What am I doing wrong?
@darc26100 'Lean' oil paint dries faster than 'fat' oil paint. A layer in an oil painting should therefore not be 'leaner' than the previous layer. If 'lean' is painted over 'fat', it will dry first, making that layer of paint vulnerable to contraction and cracking when the 'fat' layer dries. Hence the principle in oil painting of working 'fat-over-lean'. Regards, Michael
hi, Im also a begnner... when you explained the fat over lean...and mixing the linseed.. and turp. Would turp and linseed give the same result to thin the paint? - - and you mean if using oil paint straight out from tube , paint will be fatter... so then for the very first layer you should thin paint out to make it "leaner" with linseed and then lesser (for above layers) with linseed or can do top layer straight out from tube? to make it all fat over lean.? confusing you?lol -- :) correct me!
You can paint fat over lean in old or just kkep it thin as he does. With oils my preference is fat over lean. It gives the texture and depth that other mediums can't achieve.
@smithitt remember be brave if you feel like you mess up just scrape it off and start over it is just a canvas but it's your canvas nobody else's. :-} trust me you will do fine let me know if you give it a try? regards, Michael
darc26100 Hey Michael, I've been trying to learn oils on my own. Whats the difference between linseed oil and gamsol? When do I use each? I also heard that you should always paint fat over thin, what does that really mean? Thanks for the help
Thanks for sharing your videos, it is useful and would like very much to learn why I need to thin the paint and how to preserve the paint after it is done, how long it takes to dry and how you choose your signature, what other info you think is relevant to add to the paint, care to answer? Also, I am glad you cover the base on the lining trunk in the center, I am a landscaper and I was about to bring my chainsaw to take care of it... ;-)
Richard Bajana Hi, thinning your paint allows you to paint layers on top of other layers easily, and lets you paint detail work sometimes you need the paint thinned so it will spread easier. the oil paint I use usually dries to touch in 2-4 days. But some oil paints may take weeks to dry. The signature can be chosen from anything some people use symbols or their first or last name or both. I sign mine with first initial then spell out my last name all in caps. and i use different colors on different paintings I am not confined to using just one color on every signature, but this is just my personal preference experiment you will find something you like. I add linseed oil to my paint to thin it, research what different mediums will do I could go on and on, about different medium use there are alot of possibilities.

For an oil painting like this, you start with a wet background. To get colors to stand out on top of it they need to be thin. "Thin paint sticks to thick paint"
@rainuke1998 scrape the unwanted paint off your pallett , poor a little baby oil on it , baby oil works great when removing oil paint . take a paper towel and wipe it clean .
I see the influence of Bob Ross.........that's fine. I wanted to learn to paint once, and asked an art teacher about her classes. She said, "Oh no....you're not another one of those 'Bob Ross' wanna be's are you?"

I see your point but I'll disagree with you. For this sort of thing it is often a good thing to go slowly and explain everything. Plus, there's no reason to rush anything.

What tools do you use eg.. what is that kniife thing you are using? and what size brushes did you use throughout this painting?
I like landscapes the best
hi, amazing video but I have a question!! do you add any medium or liquid to the colors!! if yes, what is the medium?! and thank you :)

sir you are great artist
how long did this take him/you to complete this painting? and how long will be it take to dry?
Where could I get a palette knife? Would a Michaels arts and crafts store have one?
my best artist
Questions! I'm so new to this and you make it look so easy- do you use a "liquid white" before you begin? And I can get to the stems on the trees- after that it always looks like mud and a mess and just... yuck! What am I doing wrong?
what kind of troubles?

I think of shapes, different sizes of shapes for perspective.
@ramyrfh what kind of paper? you could use a heavy weight paper.

I can tell by your painting-style that you'd enjoy the music of singer/songwriter, Bon Iver....You should give him a listen.
My problom, I can never do the whole painting in one session, should I do bac kground first, then let that dry before painting the foreground?

How do you create a painting without a real view there? I just wanna learn to be creative...
Omg your the first youtuber
It would seem that Bob Ross's and William Bill Alexander's painting styles influenced quite a few people, which is nice....

Abstract oil Painting
For an oil painting like this, you start with a wet background. To get colors to stand out on top of it they need to be thin.
"Thin paint sticks to thick paint"
no I just love to paint
@rainuke1998 scrape the unwanted paint off your pallett , poor a little baby oil on it , baby oil works great when removing oil paint . take a paper towel and wipe it clean .
I find this helpful because I never oil painted before.

Hahahah I tried painting with oil paints and he makes it look soooo easy..trust me, it’s NOT easy..AT ALL😹😹
Luis Carranza it is easy :/
ur painting is cute like you..no joke!!
Use your imagination! It's part of painting: )
Wow I am a rookie. Fat lean can someone explain :)?
"look at that...fits right in there" ha southern accent at its finest.
linseed oil makes it "fat" turpentine makes it "lean"
Not my style of painting tho this painting is so 😞 dreary. He sounds like Jack Ross, poor imitation.
the accent is annoying.
Stooop you're ruining the whole painting!!!.....oh o.O..
